Eavesdrop on conversations with successful African American business owners, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and leading management experts on how your business can stay ahead of the curve. Navigating between the margins of business and black culture with effective decisions.
2020 has presented a big list of challenges to all Americans, most especially African Americans. Since the small business is the lifeblood of any economy, we discuss how the black entrepreneur can tap into the amazing opportunities that have presented themselves during these turbulent times. The Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce’s Phil Andrews believes fundamentally in the economic empowerment of entrepreneurs across the country, with minimal government interference. His leadership and the integrity of the Chamber was tested throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Phil proudly shared that they were able to help small companies ride the wave of the pandemic thanks to their partnerships with the Small Business Administration and other private organizations. He also praises their ability to embrace digital resources while continuing to stay high touch. When asked what continues to be a challenge for the Chamber, Phil speaks about the need for greater representation across different business sectors and net worth so as to provide an atmosphere of mentorship and learning between business owners of all sizes. Speaking further on COVID-19, Phil looks at the crisis as containing the seed of opportunity for small business owners. Every business, he says, lives in a cycle: There will be ups and there will be downs in varying degrees. He believes that the people who make up America are resilient enough to be able to bounce back even from such an unprecedented global crisis; but the ones who end up thriving are those entrepreneurs who are proactive, adaptive, and innovative in the midst of seemingly endless uncertainty. After all, 2020 is just another chapter in your business’s story. Black women are human and deserve time to process the trauma and the complexities in our communities and daily lives. How can these women embrace, embody, and express their perfect, authentic self? Every single one of us has the power to create and pass on a legacy. But how does one go about building their net worth and ensuring that their assets are protected for future generations? “Digital estate planning is all about leveraging online, self-serve technology to help families put their affairs in order, because we recognize that over 58% have not conducted any form of estate planning.” Cheri Williams-Franklin says that, usually, it’s assumed that going about it is too complicated or expensive. Life Snapshot’s purpose is to simplify digital estate planning to make this timely and relevant process accessible to everyone. Jayne Ellegard takes us through what she calls the six pillars of financial empowerment. The first pillar covers your money values and beliefs, a fundamental (but often overlooked) phase that creates context for all the other pillars. The second pillar asks: “What’s your destination?” This step is concerned with establishing your individual, personal financial goals. Pillar three, which she calls “planes, trains, and automobiles”, defines your starting point: your net worth, which you can find by subtracting your liabilities from your assets. The fourth pillar is all about spending thoughtfully, with purpose. Pillar five goes into the world of investments. Finally, pillar six is called “giving the best gifts”, referring to insurance and estate planning. Tune in to hear how you can discuss and put together an end-of-life care plan for your family and what sets Life Snapshot apart in helping you along this process, as well as dissecting your current financial situation in order to increase your net worth and create a legacy. So many of us like to stay behind the scenes. Although we desire to be at the forefront of our business, so many of us stay small out of fear. We fear being seen. We fear how we’re going to be perceived. We fear uncertainty. But guess what? You can have the best business in the world, but without visibility, you won’t succeed. You can’t sit around waiting for someone to achieve your goals because nobody has the same desire, motivation, and belief that you have in your dreams. There’s no shortcut to success. You simply have to start. You’ll stumble a lot; but no individual has ever gotten away with success without a ton of failure. Nikki makes a case against the myth of perfectionism. She says that the majority of your plans will fall short of your ideal. But there’s no getting away from this reality. Instead of striving for perfection, Nikki encourages people to simply carry out their task and, once it’s all said and done, go through three steps: reflect, address, and accept. Look at what went wrong, what went right, and what you could do differently next time; take action based on those reflections; then move on once it’s all done. Rinse and repeat. Tune in to hear how you can eliminate all your excuses and unlock your full potential, from creating an unshakable sense of self, the importance of staying grounded, increasing productivity through self-care, and the seven habits that keep people from success.
