Named one of the 11 Influential Black Women in Travel You Should Know by Travel Noire, Rachel Hill is a trailblazing Travelpreneur, Speaker, and Published Author. With a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Marketing, she has merged her Tech and Digital Marketing expertise and passion for travel into a global brand. Her engaged audience of over 30,000 sees her as a leader in both the travel and tourism space and the Digital Marketing industry. Utilizing her marketing and Influencer expertise, Rachel coaches new and aspiring Travel Brand Business creators and on how to build successful online brands, how to create valuable content, and how to monetize their brands. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Rachel Hill about how travel influencers can help brands reach niche markets. She shares her insights on demystifying travel in the Black community and gives an example of a successful creative influencer campaign she worked on to flip the narrative on cold-weather destinations. Rachel also breaks down the KPIs that she thinks are most important for influencer marketing and why it's much more valuable to focus on the impact of a campaign rather than how many likes you get. What You Will Learn: The best ways for destinations to approach influencers Why it's critical to have a coherent strategy when working with travel influencers How to measure interest and conversion rates from campaigns with influencers Best practices for influencer marketing to niche audiences How destinations can ensure they are open, authentic, and diverse in their marketing materials Why Rachel believes this is the perfect time for organizations and travel brands to be innovative and creative to attract visitors Engaging Your Audience When travel destinations approach influencers, it is important that they really understand whether that influencer's values and content align with theirs. There is no point in pursuing influencers with huge follower numbers if their audience doesn't connect to your purpose. A recent shift in destination marketing has seen a move towards micro-influencers who have engaged audiences who trust their opinion and direction. Don't focus on the numbers — focus on the impact. Niche Audiences If a destination wants to tap into a new niche audience, it's essential to be authentic by working with someone who can represent that niche audience well. You can shift the narrative and open up your region to travelers who had not previously considered it a place to visit by asking for the feedback of an influencer in that niche group. Rachel Hill gives her perspective on approaching influencers in a specific niche and outlines the best practices for influencer marketing to niche audiences. In this Just Go Play podcast episode, Daryl Devonish speaks with Kim Davis, Senior Executive Vice President, Social Impact, Growth & Legislative Affairs at the National Hockey League, the premier professional ice hockey league in the world on: Hockey is indeed for everyone - NHL's vision for youth hockey. In this capacity, Kim leads a role reporting to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to attract, develop and retain fans – with a specific focus on multi-cultural audiences – through culture, youth participation, and social impact initiatives. “Kim’s professional experience uniquely qualifies her to ensure that our League is growing the game of hockey by demonstrating the leadership principles and values in communities and with all stakeholders that can ultimately lead to new and increased fandom,” said Commissioner Bettman.Ms. Davis has been recognized by Hockey News’ “2020 Top 100 Most Influential Leaders in the sport,” Essence Magazine’s “Woke” - 2019 Change Agents, Adweek’s “30 Most Powerful Women in Sports,” Sports Business Journal’s “GameChangers,” and Savoy Magazine’s “Most Influential Women in Corporate America.” She has received other notable recognitions including Savoy Magazine’s “Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America” and showcased in Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business.” In 2012, she was profiled with First Lady Michelle Obama in Essence magazine’s “28 Most Influential Black Women in America.”Hear Kim's journey to the NHL through, what may seem, as an unconventional pathway to become a change agent in making hockey appealing to a more diverse audience to both players and fans. Kim discussed how events this year connected to Black Lives Matter became an acceleration point for the NHL to build deeper awareness and education in the hockey community to deal with human rights issues top down and bottom up. The players and leadership team have been key in making a stance on being allies and ensuring no one is denied opportunity or treated lesser than because of the colour of their skin.To increase diversity and inclusion in hockey, the NHL dug into where they needed to focus and increase cultural availability within communities. While many may think the decline in participation is due to access to the game or the equipment required, the driving issue is that people don't feel a cultural connection to hockey. To ensure more voices are part of the decision making and change required, the NHL has set up committees to have a full 360 understanding of what the ecosystem wants from sport in the future including committees for:PlayersYouth SportFansBe inspired by the change Kim is supporting the NHL in creating for minorities and females to build a stronger ecosystem for years to come.If you are a parent or coach who wants to learn more about courses or resources to help you build a quality environment for your child and athletes, reach out to us at www.justgoplay.ca.Follow Just Go Play on Instagram @qualitycoaching to receive coaching insights and information. This 300+ professional member network consists of senior-level, African-American corporate executives and entrepreneurs representing EVERY industry in America. Nicole Walker's Interview Commentary I really enjoyed this interview with Chinyere and I hope you did as well! I agree with Chinyere notion of how everything comes together in “perfect timing” if we faint not and keep pushing. It is so easy to get caught up in wanting immediate gratification, yet if the timing is not right it’s not going to happen. Learning to wait for our time is a priceless jewel that helps us to persevere. Learning to be comfortable where you are and show up fully in your current situation will lead you to where you need to be. Life isn’t a race, and when we try to rush the process we are actually making it harder to reach the next level. If something is meant to be, it will be easy, if it’s not easy then it’s not time. A quote by Rachel Corrie reads “follow your dreams, believe in yourself and don’t give up” I admire Chinyere’s ability to have such vivid dreams, her memory to recall her dreams so accurately, and her awareness to understand the messages that these dreams brought to her. Our dreams can give us visions for and understanding of our lives if we are at a certain level of consciousness. One tip I have learned is to keep a notebook near my bed to write down my dreams when I wake up, as my memory is not as good as Chinyere. I often use the website Dream Moods to interpret my dreams for a deeper understanding. When we are sleeping we are more open to receive insight and information from our subconscious, which can reveal amazing things. A quote by Kevin Michel reads “The subconscious mind is the guiding force for your entire life” I can relate to Chinyere’s courage to relocate from Utah to NYC, on the quest of making a better life for herself as I did the same. In September of 2017 I relocated from NJ to FL and told myself I would pursue entrepreneurship for a fourth time, but take it more seriously this time around. Moving from the known to the unknown is a great risk, and although it takes time to adjust it has been well worth it for me. Relocating is a huge decision that surprisingly does not require a huge amount of money as Chinyere has shown by moving with only $235 to her name. We often place many barriers in our way, which stop us from moving forward. Chinyere and countless others have proved that the lack of money does not stop progress unless we let it. A quote by John D. Rockefeller reads “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” Takeaway Chinyere mentioned the importance of being calm as a way to be productive. This really stuck out to me, as mastering the art of remaining calm is one of my goals for this year. I actually have a picture on my vision board that says “calm is a superpower”. Being calm is having an inner peace that lessens the grip of anxiety, worry, excitement, and troubles. Ways to remain calm include slowing down, taking deep breathes, staying positive, I will make it my business to remain calm personally and professionally by developing coping strategies to use when needed. Being at peace is extremely important to me, which makes remaining calm essential for my success. A quote by Brian Tracy reads “Set peace of mind as your highest goal, and organize your life around it.” Leadership Challenge My leadership challenge for you would be to think about the one thing you can take away from this episode and adopt into your life. I know it’s hard to absorb too much information at one time and it’s even harder to try and implement too many changes at once. When I attend a training or listen to podcasts I aim to walk away with a least one thing that stuck out to me and one way that I can change as a result. I challenge you to do the same! If you decide to take me up on my challenge I would love to know about your key take way.
