210 - Turning Lemons into Success In this episode, we dive into the inspiring ideas presented in Zach Friedman's book, The Lemonade Life: How to Create Success, Create Happiness, and Conquer Anything. We explore how self-awareness, resilience, and purposeful action can transform your life. From breaking free of the comparison trap to experimenting with new ideas, Friedman's insights provide a fresh perspective on building a fulfilling life. If you've ever felt stuck or unsure how to achieve your goals, this episode offers practical steps to help you move forward. Escaping the Joneses TrapOne of the first lessons in The Lemonade Life is breaking free from the cycle of comparison. Trying to "keep up with the Joneses" often leads to dissatisfaction, as we rarely see the full picture of others' lives. Instead of chasing external validation, Friedman urges us to focus inward and align our actions with what truly matters to us. The Importance of Self-AwarenessFriedman emphasizes the critical role of self-awareness in achieving happiness and success. By asking ourselves questions like "What makes me happy?" and "What unique talents can I share with the world?" we can create a life that feels authentic and rewarding. This section of the podcast discusses practical steps to cultivate self-awareness and align it with your goals. Life as an ExperimentSuccess rarely follows a straight line. Friedman suggests treating life as an experiment, where failures and missteps are opportunities to learn and grow. We explore how trying new approaches, analyzing results, and adjusting your strategies can pave the way for personal and professional breakthroughs. Navigating Life with a CompassInstead of relying on rigid plans, Friedman advocates for using a compass to guide your direction. This metaphorical compass helps you stay true to your North Star—your values and long-term goals—while adapting to life's inevitable twists and turns. In this segment, we discuss how a compass-based mindset encourages flexibility and resilience. Committing to Plan AOne of Friedman's boldest ideas is abandoning the safety net of Plan B. While this doesn't mean taking reckless risks, it emphasizes the power of fully committing to your primary goal. We discuss how focusing on Plan A allows you to channel your energy and creativity into making your dreams a reality. Key Takeaways: -Stop comparing your life to others and start focusing on your unique path.-Self-awareness is the foundation of success—discover what truly matters to you.-Life is a series of experiments; embrace failure as part of the process.-Use a compass to navigate your journey, focusing on direction rather than a fixed path.-Commit fully to your primary goal and avoid diluting your efforts with fallback plans.Final Thoughts: The Lemonade Life isn't about reaching a perfect destination—it's about enjoying the journey, learning from challenges, and celebrating small wins along the way. Take a moment to reflect on your personal compass. What's ahead of you? What lessons have you learned from your past? What inspires you, and what holds you back? If you're a woman in today's world, chances are you've tried to lose weight. More than once. Or twice, or even three times. And we know what we're supposed to do, right? War has a way of shooting holes in your best-laid plans. Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Stube (Ret.) suffered life-changing wounds during the battle of Operation Medusa in Afghanistan in 2006, but using the Green Beret methods he learned in the Special Forces, Stube knew he could conquer anything. Service in the elite A-Team teaches you to come up with smart, well-researched, and flexible battle plans for completing the mission—every mission. Even when that mission is to spend an arduous year in a hospital recovering from being blown up, badly burned, and shot multiple times. Greg shares the leadership principles and values he learned as a member of an A-Team and teaches us how to apply Special Forces strategies to our personal and business lives. Conquer Anything is a Special Forces book, but even more than that it is a leadership book designed to help each of us achieve the highest goals possible in our professional and private lives.

Retired SFC Greg Stube is a speaker on leadership and character. A serious injury sustained during a mission forced him into medical retirement. This didn’t stop him from serving, though, as he became the spokesperson of the Green Berets after recovery. “The lessons we learn in the service of our country, we owe them back to the country. It reminds me of George Washington. At the end of his service, he took the uniform off and he was asked to be our first president and he reluctantly agreed. But he kept serving.” - Greg Stube Greg Stube - Special Forces Command Greg joined the Army Infantry in 1988. Then a boy with the grandeur of youth, he recalls being under the impression that they were going to turn him to Rambo. What he found was something entirely different with all the supervision that somehow felt suppressive to his freedom and potential. He got the opportunity to join the Special Forces, and wounded up in a special training program. For the next 19 years, he spent his career as part of the Green Berets. The Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit philanthropic organization, was created to serve them by providing high-quality, accessible, and integrated mental health care. Transition by Injury During Operation Medusa in Afghanistan in 2006, Greg sustained several fatal injuries. He spent a year and a half recovering from the life-altering experience, and credits his A-team and faith with his miraculous survival. Refusing to become just another victim of warfare, he rose to the challenge of his commanding general after his hospitalization. He got into public affairs and became the spokesperson of the Green Berets for four years. Building Himself Back The lack of a sense of purpose after early retirement has made it difficult for veterans to move forward. Greg knows this. He laments how young men and women can say right off the bat that they are retired, when it’s not a place they’re supposed to be. “I think that’s a moment of time in your life where if you exit immediately without developing anything or salvaging anything that’s left of your military self, it’s almost like such a big reset button that you may not get back on your feet completely.” - Greg Stube He has therefore made it his mission to continue serving the country in other ways. He owes the nation that much, after all the lessons he’s learned through his military career. Greg has since moved on from active military duty to authoring, public speaking, and charity, with focus on leadership and building one’s A-team.
