Recorded on 10 July 2025 for ICMDA Webinars.Howard Lyons chairs a webinar with Prof Annelies Wilder-SmithThe COVID-19 pandemic taught us that global health is interconnected, and delayed action costs lives. Strong public health systems, early response, and equitable access to vaccines are critical. The rapid development of mRNA vaccines showed the power of well-funded, coordinated science. However, science must remain apolitical - when politicized, it erodes public trust and fuels misinformation. Clear communication, preparedness, and protecting vulnerable populations are essential. The pandemic revealed the fragility of health systems and the urgent need for resilience. As Scripture reminds us, pestilences are part of a broken world (Luke 21:11) - COVID-19 was not the first and will not be the last.Dr. Annelies Wilder-Smith has devoted her career to emerging infectious diseases, particularly those impacting low- and middle-income countries. Her path was shaped during two decades in Asia, where she was at the forefront of the SARS outbreak, and investigated the H5N1, dengue and Zika virus outbreaks. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as an external advisor to the World Health Organization, where she developed COVID-19 vaccine policies for the global use.Annelies is Honorary Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Past President of the International Society of Travel Medicine, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Travel Medicine. Her academic career resulted in 380 publications and many research grants. She leads the Lancet Commission on Dengue and was Principal Investigator of EU-funded research consortia. Her awards include the Myron Levine Vaccinology Prize and the CDC Honor Group Award. Annelies is also the author of Travel Medicine: Tales Behind the Science and Grasping Heaven, a biography of Dr. Tami Fisk. If you ordered a steak at a restaurant are you essentially ordering a heart attack or a nutrient-rich whole food?Few foods spark more debate than red meat. It's been blamed for heart disease, cancer and diabetes, but some people praise it for being high in iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and quality protein. So, if you add red meat to your plate is it helpful or harmful?Whether you eat meat or avoid it, I think you'll find today's conversation cuts through the noise of social media and clears up a lot of confusion in the nutrition space. I wanted to disentangle the obvious issues surrounding environmental concerns of eating animal products from today's discussion, and simply talk through the data as we have it. It's given me a lot to think about when it comes to recommendations for people, as well as how concerned I would be about red meat consumption overall.Today we're chatting with researcher and academic Dr. Kevin Maki, PhD, who specialises in clinical studies on nutrition, metabolism, and chronic disease risk factors. He's also an Adjunct Professor at Indiana University School of Public Health, a Master and Past President of the National Lipid Association, and a Fellow of the American Heart Association and The Obesity Society. Dr. Maki has participated in over 300 clinical trials and published more than 250 scientific papers, books and book chapters. You're going to learn about:Whether red meat is actually unhealthier than poultryWhat red meat really does to your cholesterol, your blood pressure and your long-term health riskWhether red meat is a source of unhealthy fatsTypes of red meat and which ones are less healthy than othersHow much red meat you can safely consumeWe also talk about seed oils, plus high protein diets and their relationship to kidney disease, longevity and diabetes risk. The 4 big takeaways I got from this episode were:Moderate amounts (50g per day) of unprocessed lean red meat in the diet is fineDiet quality and the addition of whole unprocessed foods is more importantHigh Protein is very important in middle aged and older adultsBeware of the 4 white poisons: Sugar, Salt, Saturated Fat and refined Starches

The current social, political and historical context offers many difficult challenges. We have experienced up close and from a distance awareness of a remarkable number of challenges including the wars, political unrest, growing socioeconomic inequities, climate catastrophe, and human and animal suffering.Ā These times are also marked by polarized thinking, including among analysts, candidates and in our communities.Ā An application of a psychoanalytically-informed method that rests on psychoanalytic clinical theory but focuses on group experiences of psycho-historical conflict as it continues in the present is offered as a means to facilitate deep and moving change when there is toxic polarization.Ā Ā In this episode, Dr. Harriet Wolfe presents a unique application of psychoanalytic thinking.Ā She describes an interdisciplinary group that is international, intergenerational and diverse that meets periodically to apply analytic thinking to intractable large scale historical group traumas.Ā This method, called the International Dialogue Initiative includes psychoanalysts but also others (e.g. economists, lawyers, diplomats, historians) who share stories and deeply listen with the purpose of gaining perspective on unmanageable feelings through exploring cases of traumatic residues. While others, including Freud have theorized application of psychoanalysis to groups, this particular use is novel and important in today's times and speaks to how psychoanalysis can be truly psychoanalytic and at the same time be applied to political and social issues. Harriet Wolfe, M.D., is President of the International Psychoanalytical Association, Past President of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California San Francisco, and Training and Supervising Analyst at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. Her scholarly interests include clinical applications of psychoanalytic research, organizational processes, female development, and therapeutic action. She has co-authored a number of psychoanalytically informed guided activity workbooks for children, parents and teachers to help children cope with natural and manmade disasters. She has a private practice of psychoanalysis, and individual and couple's psychoanalytic psychotherapy in San Francisco. When High School Musical 2 premiered on Disney Channel in August 2007, it shattered records with over 17 million viewers tuning in on its first night ā making it the most-watched cable movie at the time. Trading school hallways for summer jobs at a posh country club, the film dives deeper into the personal growth of its characters, especially Troy Bolton. As he's tempted by opportunities that could shape his future, he starts to drift from his friends and Gabriella, leading to heartfelt moments like āGotta Go My Own Wayā and the now-iconic (and meme-worthy) āBet On It.ā With a vibrant setting, high-energy choreography, and a soundtrack that defined a generation, the movie balances summer fun with themes of loyalty, ambition, and staying true to yourself. What sets High School Musical 2 apart from the original is its emotional depth and visual glow-up. From Sharpay's hilariously over-the-top āFabulousā to the sun-soaked golf course showdowns, the movie feels bigger and bolder while still holding onto the sincerity that made the first film a hit. For many fans, it remains the best in the trilogy - not just for the catchy songs, but for how it captures the confusing transition between teenage fun and adult choices. At its core, it's a feel-good reminder that success means little if you lose yourself along the way. Ā Takeaways: Unlike the first movie, High School Musical 2Ā explores personal ambition and integrity. Troy's internal conflict between chasing opportunity and staying loyal to his friends adds emotional depth that resonates with viewers growing up alongside the characters. The entire movie takes place in a wealthy country club, with Troy and his friends working as staff while Sharpay enjoys every luxury. This creates a visible tension between socioeconomic classes - particularly when Troy is offered elite opportunities at the expense of his peer group. The summer setting shows that learning and personal growth don't pause when school is out. How we support students in extended learning environments (internships, summer programs, real-world exposure) can have lasting impact. Gabriella choosing to walk away from what doesn't align with her values is a powerful example of student agency. When schools give students meaningful choices in their learning and extracurriculars, they're more likely to take ownership of their growth. The Central government recently proposed starting an integrated course ā MBBS and Ayurveda medicine, at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry. This proposed move has evoked a strong response from the Indian Medical Association who has said this unscientific mixing of various systems of medicine will benefit neither doctors, nor patients. This is not the first move to mix traditional and modern systems of medicine in India ā other such measures for instance, have included proposals to allow traditional medical practitioners to prescribe modern medicine after a short course. What are the risks of mixing alternative systems of medicine with the MBBS course? Is there a benefit to integrated systems and if so, how should these be brought in? Has any other country managed to successfully combine alternative systems with modern, evidence based medicine? While āStudebakerā is rarely the first name one thinks of when discussing motorsports, the company had a strong yet brief presence at the Indianapolis 500 in the early 1930s. Studebaker laid the groundwork with the introduction of the President's inline eight-cylinder engine in early 1928. The advent of the Indianapolis 500's 1930 rule changes opened the door for production-based entries, and the President's rugged eight powered a pair of private entries. These Studebaker-engined specials showed promise and led to the development of Studebaker's corporate team. This program will detail the origins and evolution of Studebaker-powered racers beginning in 1930 with a special emphasis on the company's factory-backed campaigns in 1932 and 1933. Additional focus will also be placed on the technical development of the Studebaker racers as well as the post-Studebaker disposition of the team cars and their present-day status. Sources include Studebaker's corporate archives and image collection at the Studebaker National Museum plus period publications and race accounts. Additional data is drawn from secondary sources profiling the Studebaker team plus owner research compiled during their stewardship of the cars. Andrew Beckman has been with the Studebaker National Museum since 1999 and currently serves as Archivist. He previously worked at the Sheboygan County Historical Society in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and the Wade House State Historic Site in Greenbush, Wisconsin. Mr. Beckman hails from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and holds a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay.
