Sharon McMahon, America's favorite government teacher and bestselling author of "The Small and the Mighty." shares how she went from a classroom government teacher to a social media success with over a million followers on Instagram. Once you hear this episode you will understand why Shaon's nonpartisan videos on the electoral college and other political processes captured the hearts and attention of her followers and mass media. You may not know that there is currently a lack of standardized civic education across the United States. Each state decides how much time to allocate within their schools to teach about US Government and Civics. Yes, read that again and stop for a minute to consider the consequences of inconsistent and insufficient government education for American students. If students are not taught how to make change locally, statewide or nationally, or that their vote and participation matters, perhaps that explains a lot including why so many of us complain that the system is not representing us? We talk about Sharon's brilliant book, "The Small and the Mighty," which profiles twelve unsung American heroes who made extraordinary impacts on history. One of the heroes is Clara Brown, an enslaved woman who became a pioneer in Colorado, through sacrifice, faith and decades of hard work. We also discuss the current election and why the majority of Americans feel they are not represented by either candidate. Sharon offers suggestions for electoral reforms and a multi-party system that would drastically change election outcomes. Sharon recommends FairVote, an organization working to improve election systems at the state level. From piloting planes to landing on podiums at the Paralympics, Clara Brown is no stranger to flying high :airplane_departure: Yet that wasn't always the case. When Clara was 12, she suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed from the neck down. Tune into the latest episode of Breakfast with Boz to hear from Clara about discovering cycling, competing in Paris, and what it's like training on the East Coast.
At first glance, Riverside Cemetery's parched plots might appear to be abandoned — but a closer look reveals the graveyard is actually ahead of the curve when it comes to water conservation. The dusty burial ground is also the city's oldest-operating cemetery, home to headstones for some of the Mile High's earliest and most important figures — including Clara Brown and Silas Soule, and the most Civil War veterans of any graveyard in the state. As Memorial Day approaches, Skyler McKinley went digging around to find out more about the long lost history of important Denverites and what the future could look like if more cemeteries embraced an environmentally-conscious approach. Read Skyler's cover story on Riverside Cemetery for Westword this week. Bree and Skyler also talked about the Tabor Grand Opera House, which once stood at 16th and Curtis Streets. Clara Brown (1800-1885) was known as the “Angel of the Rockies”. As one of the first Black women to settle in Colorado, she helped create a sense of family for a whole community – even after she'd lost her own.Food has been a unifier for millennia, not just gathering people together to share a meal, but acting as a warm introduction to new histories and traditions. This February on Womanica, we're celebrating Tastemakers - the Black chefs, cooks, and food historians who created new foodways and preserved important culinary stories of the past. The impact of chefs like Pig Foot Mary, Mama Dip, and Georgia Gilmore stretch far beyond the culinary scene - uplifting their local communities and inspiring those who came after them. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should.Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. Womanica was created by Liz Kaplan and Jenny Kaplan, executive produced by Jenny Kaplan, and produced by Liz Smith, Grace Lynch, Maddy Foley, Brittany Martinez, Edie Allard, Lindsey Kratochwill, Adesuwa Agbonile, Carmen Borca-Carrillo, Taylor Williamson, Ale Tejeda, Sara Schleede, Abbey Delk, and Alex Jhamb Burns. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Everyone remembers this class activity and you may even remember what your answer was throughout the years. But what's crazy, is that about 60% of teenagers are interested in someday starting their own business. Sixty Percent. If over half of our kids want to be entrepreneurs, why don't more of our schools help support them? Well, that's what a new school out in Aurora, Colorado has set out to do. Laura Burke is a 23-year veteran of the K-12 system and has served as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, special education district administrator, and principal on special assignments working in leadership development. She is now the founding principal of the Clara Brown Entrepreneurial Academy, a new magnet school in Aurora, CO, and the first and only K-8 public school in the state focused on entrepreneurial education in Colorado. Clara Brown is an inclusive community where everyone is empowered to be innovative risk-takers and creators of their own futures. Here, children learn how to develop and act on their ideas to become tomorrow's entrepreneurs and inventors. This is a fun one! We get to hear a great story from the first PH intern herself, the one and only Clara Brown. Emily Harman, the host of Onward Podcast, interviews world champion para-cyclist Clara Brown. Clara, was an avid athlete as a competitive gymnast, runner, and skier before sustaining an incomplete spinal cord injury at the C5/C6 level at age 12. Clara moved to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, where they specialize in spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation, and it was there that she began to get some feeling and function back. She started walking on the treadmill and made great progress. A few months later, however, Clara began experiencing excruciating pain in her left leg and was diagnosed with avascular necrosis, which was cutting off the blood supply and causing bone to die. Listen to this episode and learn about Clara’s amazing journey and how she is racing towards the Paralympics in Tokyo.
