Sam and Emma host Milton Allimadi, publisher of The Black Star News and the author of Manufacturing Hate: How Africa Was Demonized In Western Media, to discuss the exploitative and racist depiction of African people and governments in US media coverage, before moving on to exploring the current conflict in Ethiopia in the Tigray region. They begin with Allimadi's work on the African narrative created by US Journalists at the New York Times during decolonization that helped build a violent, impoverished, and chaotic image of Africa, emphasizing Africans as brutal and tribal, and establishing this image of the continent for the century moving forwards. Milton, Sam, and Emma look into how NYT clout dominated this discourse so heavily that Allimadi struggled for years coming out of Columbia to get his work published, before they begin to unpack the historical context for the current conflict between Ethiopia and Tigray. They discuss the history of military leadership following the fall of Haile Selassie, and the antagonistic relationship between the Ethiopian government and regions of Tigray and Eritrea, igniting a three-way conflict that would only begin to shift as the Eritrean-Ethiopian War came to a close, and began to center the Tigray region as Ethiopian and Eritrean forces invaded from either side. They discuss the land and independence-based rationale for the war, the devastating famine created by the Ethiopian blockade, and the role of the war on the greater continental and international levels, with PM Abiy Ahmed recently turning to China for infrastructural aid. Emma and Sam round out the first half by covering the continued rampant spread of the Delta variant as the US tries to get its act together to push back, and look into what this week might mean for the Infrastructure bill. And in the Fun Half: Emma, Sam, and the MR crew cover the developments in the Colonial Pipeline spill, with the gas company, stunningly, incredibly underestimating the actual devastation caused by the leak, Matt discusses the role of Jury nullification in helping prohibit legal action against protesters or for minor drug offenses, and they watch Maria Bartiromo take Senator Cramer to task on the lack of racism in the infrastructure bill, until he finally fights her off by reminding her of the big bad shadow coming in from the East – China. Riley from ND calls in to show appreciation for the Cramer coverage and look into the GOP's attempt to capitalize on their misinformation about Critical Race Theory in school board elections, Gorfalax and Sam dive into the role of Trump's (still standing) tariffs and how they bolster monopoly, and the crew covers Joe Rogan's reiteration of the age-old fear mongering behind public health provisions, plus, your calls and IMs! To discuss how the south has been overwhelmed by COVID-19, we are joined by our special guest, Dr. Mana Lumumba-Kasongo. Dr. Kasongo is a board-certified emergency physician at the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia, as well as a nationally published writer. She has spent much of her adult life in the pursuit of both of her passions - medicine and journalism. After graduating and receiving a Master’s degree from the Columbia School of Journalism, Dr. Kasongo worked as a freelance reporter for many news venues and co-founded the Black Star News, a weekly investigative newspaper in New York City. She later went on to receive her medical degree from Rush Medical School and completed her residency in emergency medicine from New York University. Dr. Jack Rasmus, professor in the Economics and Political Science Departments at St. Mary's College of California, joins us to discuss what’s not happening in terms of another stimulus bill. And later in the segment, we'll take a closer look at the $8 billion settlement Purdue Pharma agreed to Wednesday, pleading guilty to several criminal charges. However, the settlement means no member of the Sackler family will serve prison time.Ann Garrison, journalist and contributor to a number of outlets such as Black Agenda Report, Black Star News, MintPress and CounterPunch; and Dan Kovalik, lawyer, professor and author of “No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using ‘Humanitarian Intervention’ to Advance Economic and Strategic Interests," join us to discuss how Paul Rusesabagina, the hero whose story is the basis of the movie “Hotel Rwanda,” was kidnapped in Dubai and illegally rendered to Rwanda in late August. He now awaits trial on terrorism charges. We'll learn more about the arrest and what he now stands accused of.Kim Iversen, independent journalist and host of the "Kim Iversen Show" on YouTube; and Nicolas Davies, peace activist and author of "Blood on Our Hands: The American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq," joins us to discuss Israel and Bahrain officially signing a communique on establishing diplomatic relations and stories about how Israel has actually had a secret mission in Bahrain for a decade, promoting deals between Israeli and Bahraini businesses and providing a communication channel to the Israeli government. It seems pretty obvious that the Abraham Accords only made public what had been going on in secret. We’ll also discuss a Wednesday Politico story - based on the word of an anonymous congressional aide and an anonymous former State Department official - that the State Department is preparing to accuse a number of prominent international NGOs of anti-Semitism.

2020 has presented a big list of challenges to all Americans, most especially African Americans. Since the small business is the lifeblood of any economy, we discuss how the black entrepreneur can tap into the amazing opportunities that have presented themselves during these turbulent times. The Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce’s Phil Andrews believes fundamentally in the economic empowerment of entrepreneurs across the country, with minimal government interference. His leadership and the integrity of the Chamber was tested throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Phil proudly shared that they were able to help small companies ride the wave of the pandemic thanks to their partnerships with the Small Business Administration and other private organizations. He also praises their ability to embrace digital resources while continuing to stay high touch. When asked what continues to be a challenge for the Chamber, Phil speaks about the need for greater representation across different business sectors and net worth so as to provide an atmosphere of mentorship and learning between business owners of all sizes. Speaking further on COVID-19, Phil looks at the crisis as containing the seed of opportunity for small business owners. Every business, he says, lives in a cycle: There will be ups and there will be downs in varying degrees. He believes that the people who make up America are resilient enough to be able to bounce back even from such an unprecedented global crisis; but the ones who end up thriving are those entrepreneurs who are proactive, adaptive, and innovative in the midst of seemingly endless uncertainty. After all, 2020 is just another chapter in your business’s story. Memorable Moments: ●    How the LIAACC plans to increase its membership in 2021 ●    How the Chamber is helping to rebuild black-owned businesses in New York ●    LIAACC top priorities for the Chamber ●    Why small business owners should be a part of the Chamber of Commerce ●    Chamber of Commerce benefits which members do not utilize enough ●    Creating more black-owned businesses and putting more African Americans in top executive positions ●    The importance of increasing the quality of professionalism and service of black-owned businesses ●    How the Chamber will move forward amid the current climate Guest Profile: Phil Andrews is the President of the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. and the Past President of the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. He is the Founder of P.A. Public Relations Co.; Phil serves as Public Relations Director. Prior to beginning his career in Public Relations, Phil was the Vice President of the Haircut Hut franchise. He currently holds a leadership position in the Black Public Relations Society-New York, Inc. which is New York’s Premier organization for Image Makers and Strategists in Public Relations. Phil has received many proclamations from notable political officials including former Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gullotta, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Assembly-woman Earlene Hooper Hill, 18th Assembly District of New York. In 2010, Phil was honored for 50 or So Around 50 by Long Island Business News. In 2011, Phil was honored by the Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY) with the “Good Neighbor Award”. Phil's work has been featured in multi-platform publications including Black Star News, The New York Beacon, Amsterdam News, Minority Business Review, The Network Journal and more.   He’s also featured in “15 Years of Minority Business Development” a book published by Mr. Robert Adams. Phil is listed in Who’s Who in Black America and the International Who’s Who. Trump Backs First Step Act, Bipartisan Bill on Criminal Justice Reform

The Critical Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2018 56:08

Today, President Donald Trump endorsed the First Step Act, placing the burden on Congress to pass the landmark criminal justice reform bill. This has been languishing in Congress in some form or fashion for a few years. The House version, passed in May with a “back end” focus on those who have been incarcerated, via such methods as improving prison conditions and easing inmates' re-entry into society. A crucial feature of the current Senate plan, called the First Step Act, is the inclusion of so-called "front-end" reforms with the goal of a more rational sentencing process. Is it a coincidence that a new criminal justice reform proposal has emerged in the Senate less than a week after the departure of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions? On the sentencing side of the equation, the proposed reforms in the First Step Act apply the law as it was intended, refocus lengthy sentences on serious offenders, allow judges to exercise some discretion in sentencing offenders with limited and lower level criminal history and offer relief to thousands of inmates at no cost to public safety. Although they are the lowest hanging fruit of sentencing changes included in bills that have been discussed for years, including the Smarter Sentencing Act and the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, these reforms effectively tackle some of the most egregious and obvious wrongs of our sentencing laws. In contrast to the 2015 proposal, the elimination of the “stacking” provision and the reduction of mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenders would not apply retroactively — a concession by Democrats that greatly narrows the impact of the changes for the current prison population. If Mr. Trump supports the package, senators will still be up against a rapidly closing legislative window — Congress is set to break in mid-December — and certain opposition from conservative Republicans in both the Senate and the House. What does this mean for substantive criminal justice reform? The fate of the Georgia race for governor remained uncertain today as Democrat Stacey Abrams and Republican Brian Kemp clashed bitterly over pending lawsuits that seek to count more ballots that were rejected by local officials. What went on in GA during this election? People wonder about the significance of the Section 5 preclearance requirement of the Voting Rights Act. Would we be having this problem if Section 5 were still enforced? The requirement prohibits certain jurisdictions from implementing any change affecting voting without receiving preapproval from the US Attorney General or the US District Court for DC that the change does not discriminate against protected minorities. A lot of people are looking at the results of the midterm elections and looking at the increased diversity that is on its way to Congress: more than 40 women, including two Muslim women, Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib, daughter of Palestinian immigrants; and Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's nominee, Ilhan Omar, a Somali-AmericanIs time running out for Julian Assange? In a recent MintPress article, journalist Ann Garrison writes, " ... in ten years' time, WikiLeaks has published more classified information than all other media combined. It exposed human rights abuses, government spying, torture and war crimes on an unprecedented scale. Assange has been an asylee in Ecuador's London Embassy for more than six years—since August 2012. With that being understood, why do you believe now that WikiLeaks founder and publisher Julian Assange will wind up in the clutches of the US government?" What is it that the FBI and CIA want to know? They want to know about security files for example. They want to know about the inner processes and workings of Wikileaks. They want access to the knowledge that's inside Julian's brain. And they will torture him. And they will interrogate him in order to attempt to get that knowledge.GUESTS:Glen Ivey - Twice elected state's attorney in Prince George's County, Maryland, and former assistant US attorney in Washington, DC. Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: A new book makes the connection between mass Black incarceration, the growing police state apparatus besieging non-white immigrants, and the legacy of slavery in the United States: and, Ajamu Baraka says it’s time for a revival – of the Black American peace movement. Bobi Wine, the wildly popular Ugandan entertainer and national legislator who was hospitalized in the United States after being viciously beaten by President Yoweri Museveni’s police, plans to hold a giant concert in the central African nation’s capital city, Kampala. Wine says Museveni is “drunk on power” after more than three decades in office, and is worse than former dictator Idi Amin. In Brooklyn, New York, Ugandan native Milton Allimadi, publisher of Black Star News, agrees with Bobi Wine’s assessment. Four decades ago, Black politicians and grassroots activists could be counted on to at least pay lip-service to the cause of international peace. But nowadays, most Black elected officials behave much like other Democrats on foreign policy issues, and the Black peace movement is in disrepair. Veteran human rights activist Ajamu Baraka, who was the Green Party’s vice presidential candidate in 2016, is trying to revive the Black movement against imperialist wars. Baraka is director of the Black Alliance for Peace.   In the Black Radical Tradition, there is no fine line between foreign and domestic policy. Much the same can be said of the politics of Latin American  immigrant activists. Martha Escobar is an associate professor of Chicano Studies at California State University, at Northridge.” She’s author of the new book, “Captivity Beyond Prisons: Criminalization Experiences of Latina Immigrants.” Escobar says the U.S. mass incarceration system can only be understood as an extension of slavery.
