On Wednesday afternoon, I blew in later than expected to get ready for our Community Group to arrive at our home. It was pouring down rain, buckets of rain. (My weather app said to expect flash flood warnings.) I was thinking about the three large packs of chicken thighs I was planning to grill and staring at the quart of heavy cream, chicken stock, white wine, a stack of sage leaves from my garden and shallots, all on the counter by my stove, that would make up the quasi-French sauce (a sage cream sauce). Also, the patio still needed work before it would be ready for guests. Ben Weir was coming to help cook, and yet I could feel anger and self-pity threatening my joy. I love to host, but let's face it, hospitality is hard work. Then, looking at the rain, Teri commented, “If we were not hosting, I don't know if I would get out in this rain." “Great," I thought. "And God, you are no help. I am sort of doing this for you, and you are raining on your own parade!" Then I recalled a story, a story I will share with you Sunday, that lifted me out of my despair and into the realm of love and joy. Just recalling it made me look around and see things with new eyes—to really see! After all, I had a good friend showing up to help prepare a delicious feast, a beautifully cleaned house because of my bride, and, on top of that, a German Chocolate cake she had worked on in the wee hours of the morning, just to bless me. And I saw a grander vision of, not just this endeavor, but all the mundane endeavors we do that make up a life. I can't wait to talk about it with you on Sunday. Another thing I can't wait for is this: Sunday is when we bring our gifts, our investment—our pledge—to further the work of God's kingdom in Our Big Backyard. We have talked, dreamed, and challenged ourselves for a few months, and now we have the privilege to invest in future glory. I can see kids playing on this playground—my own child, some of my grandchildren, and yours, as well. I can see parents idling close by in the pavilion to make sure no one gets hurt too badly. I can easily imagine that one day the children on the playground are now the ones in the pavilion, watching their own children play and telling stories of grace, wonder, and joy—and giving thanks that their parents and others had invested well.
Cocoa beans, which are used to make chocolate, are mostly grown in a few places making them susceptible to the effects of extreme weather events, driven by climate change. We hear about a team in Germany that is developing a chocolate made without cocoa.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

#040 - Today we visit with Chef Daphani Hightower, the owner and operator of The Cake & Sugar Company. Chef Daphani has an incredible story and continues to persevere in the face of adversity. She lost her son's father to COVID and was diagnosed with stage 3 stomach cancer in 2022. The cancer diagnosis has inspired her to forge ahead to create a legacy for her children. She started cooking for her then husband, an ex football player, to help him lose 300 pounds over 10 months. While cooking one day, she decided to try to make her own candy and cupcakes. She found a love for baking and decided to go to culinary school. She found that most Bay Area bakers were making the same tired desserts. Dissatisfied with the status quo, she decided to experiment with flavors and that is where she found her niche.“Everybody's making a banana pudding, but we here at the Cake and Sugar Company, we have 30 flavors of banana pudding. So you're not running up on us with just a regular flavor. We have Red Velvet, Carrot Cake, German Chocolate, Peach Cobbler, Banana Pudding. You know, we have so many different flavors. I just want it to be different. And so we've made, cinnamon roll peach cobbler”.Peach Cobbler cupcakes are her top seller so she includes them in her $50 box, which includes a half dozen cupcakes and a host of cookies she sells via social media. She posts and within an hour - she's sold out. It's not a subscription so you have to be ready when she posts.Chef Daphani started in Oakland, then moved to Hayward for lower rent. She recently found a larger space in Oakland so she is coming back to expand her business. Being an Oakland based business is very important to her:“...you can't be in Oakland without being about community. You will fail. You have to be here, you have to show up. Whether it's you showing up for Oakland kids, whether you showing up for your school, your kids' school, after school program. However it looks, if you live here, you work here, you're here, you need to participate . So that is what is definitely important to me”.Be sure to listen to the whole interview to hear how he delivered cupcakes to Damon Wayans backstage after one of his shows.

Google what you know or go to YouTube and search for it and then learn a little, the task or repair or remediation might be easier than you think. Try asking the question with more and less details will sometimes help get you to an answer. So when your dryer is making noise, or your refrigerator is not working or your mower is not starting or your faucet is dripping, you may find the remedy is simpler then you thought. Feasting in HopeI had a couple of huge feasts recently. Both were for my birthday. One was thrown by my wife and had most of the begats and extended family. It was glorious and the food was amazing. My son-in-law cooked a prime rib over open flame for 4 hours and served it with a center of 125—perfection. My favorite cake—German Chocolate—graciously adorned the center piece as the hallowed birthday song was sung. The other was thrown by my staff as they took me to a glorious restaurant I hadn't been to before. My Community Group also made me a German Chocolate cake, as well. (You might have guessed, it is my favorite!) What was true of all these events was that food was more than food. It was nourishment, of course, but who thinks about that on such occasions? It was love, family, belonging… and, of course, delicious! Some would think this extravagant or maybe even unspiritual and yet, as Tim Chester says in his book, A Meal with Jesus: “Jesus is known through his catering”. Chester says this because, as he points out in Luke's gospel, Jesus is always either going to a feast, coming from a feast, or throwing a feast. We are now starting the Christian new year with the season of Advent which culminates in the Feast of the Nativity on Christmas Day. So, what are we to make of it? How do we keep our scattered feasts well? Make no mistake, feast we will, if we are human. The question is, will our feast look like what God has in mind or what our culture is prescribing? To help train our sensibilities, we will be looking at 5 feasts during this season of Advent. (We have an extra one because Christmas is on Saturday and the elven magic will still be upon us that Sunday!) This Sunday we start by looking at the whole idea that our future is a feast and considering how that idea is unique to Christianity and, as such, shapes both our present and our future. Don't believe me? Join us on Sunday and we will talk about it! Also, as of this morning we have completed our first 3 year cycle in the Soul Room. Which means if you started with us from the beginning, you have now prayed through the whole Bible! The new cycle will begin on Monday. If you haven't done this before, this is a good time to join us as we pray scripture back to God in a community. Blessings, Jim

Thirty years ago, the world was a much different place and journalists used to be brave. Back then, Tucker Carlson built an impressive career writing for some of the biggest names in American journalism. But now, it would take a miracle for any of these politicized papers to feature his work again. The acclaimed Fox News host joins Glenn to discuss just how much has changed — as he's documented in his new book, “The Long Slide: Thirty Years in American Journalism.” Tucker sets the record straight on his true opinions about the latest topics the corporate media is trying to skewer him with: Afghanistan, Hungary, fascism, and more. And he and Glenn break down how our leaders' newfound love for conformity has played out in the COVID-19 era as the government has fueled division and, Tucker believes, even spied on people like him who don't fear being bullied for disagreeing. Today, we celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Never in my life did I think I would say those words. I actually never thought I would get married until I met the man that is my husband. It was truly by God’s intervention that we met. We had a small wedding, western themed. My daughter was my maid of honor. His brother was the best man. We had his brother perform the ceremony. It was a nice and small wedding. We were surrounded by family and friends. We had three cakes. Grooms cake with peanut butter icing, the wedding cake with three different flavor layers and as a side note, a maid of honor cake. My daughter always referred to herself as the princess, so we did a German Chocolate with a Cinderella carriage on it. It was a special day for her as well. Our wedding was at a small country church where my husband’s mother was a member. The reception was in the family life building/gym. Our wedding wasn’t fancy but it was perfect for us. We tried to involve our kids. His sons were part of the wedding party and my daughter was my maid of honor. My niece played the piano. We didn’t do formal attire as I stated, it was western themed and clothes were reusable – so money wasn’t wasted on a dress that I would never wear again. Not that a wedding dress is wasteful, but money wise it was not within the budget and it just wasn’t me.We also had a short travel by car, honeymoon. We both had jobs to get back to and things that needed to be done. Honey I love you with all my heart, body and soul. I have no regrets other than I wish we had met earlier in our lives. Here’s to the next 35 years – to make it to 50 years of wedded bliss.Love you Honey! Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lsfarnsworth29)Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! When I was growing up, one time my grandmother baked a fantastic German Chocolate cake. I can see it now -- that moist chocolate cake and rich icing. It was great and everyone in the family let her know how great it was. We devoured the cake. But from that time on, we could count on a German Chocolate cake as THE dessert every time we would visit. It became a little boring. Needless to say, I never told her that. Everyone wants and needs change. But on the other hand, we enjoy doing what we do well that has reinforced by others expressing their appreciation. We all have experienced applauding a small child's, or in my case grandchildren’s, performance -- perhaps a somersault or a dance -- only to have the child repeat it over and over again until we could jump up and run out of the room screaming. We as adults are no different. We tend to limit ourselves to the things we learn to do well. It’s easier for one thing, and it beats the risk of trying something new. When it comes to innovation, this plays out in spades. When a new innovation team achieves some level of success -- such as the creation of a new product or service -- they jump to the assumption that it was the process that enabled them to achieve success. Or maybe it was the way that one brainstorm session was run and therefore all future brainstorming should be done the exact same way. Or maybe it was the evaluation and idea selection process that was key for its success so all future idea evaluations should be done in the exact same way. Just as the enthusiastic applause for a child puts the child on auto-repeat, success to an innovation team does the same. We create a habit of repeating the exact same steps in what we believe is the perfect innovation process. When that happens, its the first indication that an innovation team is on the glide path to mediocrity. It was NOT the process that enabled success. It was the idea. And building rigid repetitive processes are NOT conducive to creating a stimulating environment for generating new and exciting ideas. It’s easy to fall into uninteresting grooves of habit. And the only way to avoid it, to keep change and creativity in our lives, is to do it deliberately. To achieve sustained innovation success, it is a good idea to break up the patterns from time to time. It will stimulate you and the team resulting in a new, fresh outlook on things. Remember -- no habit has any real hold on you other than the hold you have on it. Habits and routines have a way of sneaking up on us. It starts off with us finding a way of doing things that become easily repeatable -- comfortable. Soon it becomes the way “we innovate”. Samuel Johnson, in 1784, put habit in its right context, “The chains of habit are too weak to be noticed until they are too strong to be broken.” Be on guard to avoid the habit trap. Innovation is about being disruptive. So disrupt how you do everything -- including how you innovate. If you can apply innovation to products, services, sales, marketing, HR, finance -- why not innovate the way you innovate? Turn the habit mirror on yourself. We are quick to criticize the expense report process as being too rigid and in need of innovation. Could others say the same about your innovation frameworks and processes? Does this mean you change your innovation frameworks and processes after each project? No. What it does mean is to be deliberate in trying new things. Do not allow the feeling of the safe to hold you back from taking risks. There are things you would like to leave as is. But German Chocolate cake -- or anything else -- gets old and boring fast. We need a change in our lives. It’s a basic human need. If we don’t get it, the concrete starts to harden. We need to be willing to change ourselves first and through it, influence others that change is what is needed if we are to keep moving forward. Most people who drive cars to work leave at the same time and follow the same route, after having the same thing for breakfast. Arriving on the job, they continue the routine. So start tomorrow. Have something different for breakfast. Leave earlier and take a different route to work. You might see something that could spark a great idea and also see some interesting parts of the town or the countryside. We all can do things to get us out of our ruts .. and avoid the habit trap. I’m Phil McKinney and thanks for listening

Here we are with Episode 424, Q&A #17! If you want to see the video for this podcast, be sure to check out our YouTube channel. Show Notes: 1. [1:43] Lake vs Chlorinated Pool? Jocie says: Hope you and Nicki do another Q&A soon, those are my favorites! Heading towards summer- I'm wondering what your opinion is on lake vs typical chlorinated pool for summer fun? Our family opted for the lake last summer, and it was beautiful but between the dead fish and the posted high fecal count, I was more than a little grossed out. There is a lot of talk about kids growing up healthier when they are exposed to more dirt and germs, but what about things that can mess you over like parasites and giardia? The chlorinated pool is looking better this year! 2. [4:12] Keto & Endurance (specifically running) Rick says: Hey Robb and Nicki, Thanks for the Q&A episodes - they've been super fun. I'm writing to ask you a question about running when I'm on Keto. I'm 45 y/o, male, 6'0", 235lbs, roughly 30% BF. I'm trying to lose some weight as the primary goal, but I love running too. My ideal workout regimen is to lift 2x per week, full body barbell-type stuff, and run 3-4 times, with runs anywhere from 4-10 miles. I've never been fast, but I've got pretty decent endurance. Keto seems to be the absolute best way to lose weight, but I find that my runs really tank. I use a HR meter, and I go about a minute per mile slower and my HR is 10-20 beats per minute higher. The longest I've been able to maintain keto is about 5 weeks, and the main reason I fall off the wagon is this. While I'm not weighing and measuring, I am more or less following the suggestions from the Masterclass and Ketogains, and I'm focusing on getting enough electrolytes. So what do you think is going on? Do I just have to keep plugging? Is it possible I'm not meant to run while keto? How can I speed adaptation? Lots of short slow runs? Fast runs? Slog it out for long and slow? Any advice you have would be fantastic. Thanks. Rick 3. [8:26] Carbs for Endurance Once Fat Adapted? Brian says: Robb love your insight, 47 year old cyclist typically the last guy on Earth touting low carb eating regiment, but ive been Keto over a year and have seen performance increase against my age. I presume my body has undergone a metabolic shift in fuel source, its working for me! my question is should us endurance guys still carb load to have glucose present in long events or should calorie consumption prior to long events stay parallel to our every day eating regimnet? In others words once this metabolic shift occurs in the macro perspective of ones nutrition is it assumed that the best fuel choice during ultra events should be the same? Would re-introducing glucose be a safety net or waste of calories in your opinion? 4. [14:01] High Fasting Blood Glucose on Low Carb/Keto Diet Heather says: HI Robb & Nikki! I'm a HUGE fan and appreciate all of the knowledge and insight you share on the podcast and everywhere else you show up. :) I have eaten low-carb/keto/paleo-ish for several years now, and have done really well. I probably get less than 100g carbs/day (more like 50g), and eat an average of 100g protein/day (grassfed meat, bone broth protein, whey protein smoothies, nuts/seeds, pastured eggs, mackerel/sardines, and occasionally chicken). My fat intake is probably 90-100g/day. I am 43 yrs old, 5'4 at 118lbs with less than 20% body fat. I go on long walks daily, weight train 3/week, and throw some HITT training along with boxing in the mix. I used to be a spinning instructor and spent hours and hours on the bike each week, but haven't taught in 4 yrs and now only power walk for "cardio" outside of interval training at the gym. I have two kids, ages 4 & 8, so they keep me busy as well! I recently (as in 2 weeks ago) bought a blood glucose meter after giving in to my curiosity as to just what my fasting BG is, along with post-prandial, post exercise, etc. I was shocked and so upset when I took my first reading one morning and it was 106!!! Since then I've been rather obsessed and am pricking my finger all day long! LOL! But really no matter if i'm fasted, just went on a long walk or weight training session, or even 2 hrs after a meal, my blood glucose is always somewhere btwn 90-110--I never get a big swing upward after a meal, even after I indulged in gf German Chocolate cake the other night! :) It has only gone as low as 83 or 87 on two, random occasions, which is making me wonder, "What the heck?!" I've read different things online about this, but I really don't know who to trust other than you. Could it be cortisol? Could that be my norm? I was expecting my FBG to be around 70-80 based on my diet and activity level. Please advise! I'm so confused!! Thank you SO MUCH for all you do!!!!! :) :) :) 5. [18:21] Reliability of Glucose Meters Pedro says: Dear Robb My name is Pedro Escudeiro and I am portuguese. I have been following your work through interviews and your online publications and books. I take many notes from your teachings and have been applying them in my own life, which I deeply thank. However, a few issues have arised especially concerning the use of glucometers to measure blood glucose, for metabolic control (fortunately I have no diseases). I would like to ask you a few questions. For a year now that I use regularly a Freestyle Precision Neo device and the readings are not reliable at all. I have made many experiments, such as trying to prick my fingers 5 times in a row to observe the results. The readings are always different, sometimes 15 or more points (mg/dL). I have done the carb test as well, reproducing the same conditions and the readings also change if I test a few times and in different days. I have tried different devices too. I contacted the company to expose this issue and they told me that it is acceptable a variation of 20 points. Being so, it basically means we can't rely on this method to inform us on how the body is reacting to foods or to check glucose stability, for example, because it is always changing within the same conditions. I wonder if you have noticed this same issue and if you found a method to overcome this unreliability. I have used also a Freestyle Libre device, which measures continually the glucose (interstitial fluid) I know there is a delay between the readings and the actual glucose level and there is also less precision than a blood glucometer. However, the same issue of unreliability is happening. The profile of the Libre does not have any match with the blood glucometer or even any correlation, one might be going up and the other down and later one changes and the other doesn't. Since glucose levels are so important for health and performance, if the best method to check it is not reliable and trustworthy at all, it makes all the assumptions and decisions about our health, not just worthless but somehow dangerous. I wonder if you have any thoughts on this. I hope I am not taking too much of your time and I thank you in advance. Episode 5: Happy Birthday! A special episode about cake! Happy Birthday, Betsy! (and almost her whole family) We’ll celebrate her birthday with a special episode all about our favorite family birthday cakes. Our dad’s favorite, German Chocolate, makes an appearance and Betsy shares her new family tradition of a very pink strawberry cake. Kate talks about her childhood cake- the ice cream cake. We hope you saved room for dessert! Our birthday cakes... German Chocolate Cake Frosting A rich, buttery frosting that our dad requests every year isn’t a hard task. This combo of butter, coconut and pecans is a decadent topping for a mild chocolate cake. Our mom used a boxed mix for this cake - which is delicious. If you’d like to bake from scratch, see below for a link. Tips: Our mom's German Chocolate Cake Frosting This frosting is tricky to spread on the sides of a cake- best bet is to go “naked cake” style. The Original German Chocolate Cake (from Baker’s Chocolate) Strawberry Cake : Taste of Lizzy T This is a delicious and not-too-complicated birthday cake perfect for a spring birthday. The bright pink hue is festive and the taste is all about the strawberries. Tips: Have the birthday kid help decorate the top with sliced fresh strawberries. The strawberry jam in the frosting helps set and stabilize the frosting, making for a cake that can stand up to a long birthday party and go long on flavor. Swiss Roll Ice Cream Cake: Taste of Home Frozen Chocolate Oreo Cake: The Kitchn Kate’s Birthday Cake Kate nearly always had an ice cream cake for her birthday. Here are two that would be great for anyone’s birthday- summer or not. The third is our mom’s classic ice cream cake, as best as we can transcribe. Tips: Ice cream cake is all about assembly. Make sure the ice cream is soft enough to spread for the layers. Freeze HARD for sharp definition between layers. Make sure you have enough time for the last freeze for the entire cake. Overnight is ideal. Give the cake some time to thaw on the counter before slicing. Time can vary- from an hour in a cool room in winter to 15 minutes in a hot July kitchen.
