#222: What happens when an NFL team decides to fuel its players with real organic food? Houston Texans wellness coach Ladd Harris shares how he's building a performance-driven nutrition program based on soil-grown, nutrient-dense ingredients - including Hugh and Lisa Kent's blueberries. Ladd explains how organic food for athletes goes beyond macros — it's about integrity, flavor, knowing your farmer and rejecting synthetic, lifeless alternatives.https://realorganicproject.org/feeding-nfl-athletes-real-organic-food-222Ladd Harris serves as the Director of Team Wellness for the Houston Texans and was previously the Director of Performance Nutrition for the Oakland Raiders from February 2017 to February 2018. He has a Master of Science in Sports Nutrition from the University of Utah and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Sciences at Utah State University. The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/directoryWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Dear Glanbia board of directors…don't be afraid to give up what's good for what's great! Glanbia Plc (LON:GLB) is a multibillion-dollar global nutrition company that's currently comprised of three divisions that span across the B2B supply chain (i.e. Health & Nutrition and Dairy Nutrition) and branded products (Performance Nutrition). “Health & Nutrition” is a leading global ingredients solutions business, providing value added ingredient and flavor solutions to a range of attractive, high-growth end markets. In the first quarter of 2025, revenue increased by 24.9% YoY. “Dairy Nutrition” is the number one producer of American-style cheddar cheese in the U.S. market, but more importantly (for my audience) the number one producer of whey protein isolate…and provides a wide range of dairy and functional protein solutions. In the first quarter of 2025, revenue increased by 18.9%. The brands in the Glanbia Performance Nutrition portfolio include; Optimum Nutrition, BSN, think!, Isopure, Amazing Grass, and SlimFast. Glanbia Performance Nutrition had first quarter 2025 revenue that declined by 6.6% YoY, driven by a volume decrease of 5.8% and a price decrease of 0.8%. Additionally, I'll dive deeper into Glanbia Performance Nutrition geographical, sales channel, product format, and categorial performance. Optimum Nutrition, which was the initial M&A transaction in 2008 that created the GPN division, now represents 66% of the total revenue. In the last year, Optimum Nutrition generated revenue of approximately $1.2 billion. Moreover, Optimum Nutrition is the number one sports nutrition brand in the world and also the top sports nutrition brand in close to 20 different countries. As part of its group-wide transformation program announced last November, that seeks to generate annual cost savings of at least $50m by 2027, leadership noted that a GPN portfolio review to ensure focus can be placed on high-growth opportunities had determined the divesture decision on its Netherlands-based direct-to-consumer ecommerce business, Body & Fit (that was acquired in 2017), and its weight management brand SlimFast (that was acquired for $350 million in 2018). Also, if you don't follow the Irish financial news cycle, you might have missed that the activist investor Clearway Capital is back again! But this time…Clearway Capital is hoping to get support from Tirlán Co-op, which is Ireland's largest, farmer-owned agri-food and nutrition business. Also, Tirlán is the largest shareholder in Glanbia. But while I couldn't get access to the exact letter sent to Tirlán, urging it to support a plan to split up Glanbia…Clearway Capital did recently address the Glanbia board of directors at its annual general meeting, requesting the global nutrition company initiate a strategic review into potential disassembly. And just like three years ago, I'm still largely aligned with those Clearway Capital statements. But the major difference surrounds our motivation as to why we've been urging Glanbia to be split up into two (or three different businesses).

Want to get in touch? Send Claire a message! In episode 114 of The Eat for Endurance Podcast, Sports Dietitian Stevie Smith, MS RD CSSD joins me for the first in a two-part series on how various factors impact how you should fuel during endurance activities. In Part 1, we discuss how exercise intensity affects fueling needs. More specifically, we tackle a question that we often hear from mid and especially back-of-the-pack athletes:“Do I really need to eat that many carbs during exercise if I'm not very fast?”Here's what we cover to answer this question:Why higher intensity exercise, even at a slower pace, demands more carbsHow to adjust fueling based on YOUR effort level, not just pace or durationThe risks of underfueling, including fatigue, poor performance, increased injury risk, and mental burnoutHigh carb fueling and who may (and may not) benefitPractical guidelines for pre-, during-, and post-workout fueling and for a variety of sports (e.g. road running, trail/ultra, triathlon)How to adjust your fueling strategy when unexpected challenges occur and throw you off paceIt doesn't matter if you're chasing a PR or just trying to finish strong. Whether you're an elite or back-of-the-pack athlete, your body needs fuel that matches your effort.
In today's episode, I'm building on concepts from the last episode on pre-workout nutrition. You can listen to that episode here, where you'll hear the three fundamental factors for optimal workout results. But in this episode, I'm sharing the three R's of post-workout recovery: rehydrate (water and electrolytes), replenish (muscle glycogen), and rebuild (protein). I focus on protein synthesis and debunking previous myths about protein consumption and absorption. I also share post-workout nutrition strategies, including protein shakes and balanced meals, emphasizing that timing is flexible and should fit individual schedules and needs. Episode Summary In this episode of the Empowered Nutrition Podcast, Erin is joined by Dr. Rachele Pojednic, a renowned expert in nutrition, supplementation, and muscle physiology. Dr. Pojednic is the CEO and Founder of Strong Process Education, the Director of Scientific Research at Restore Hyperwellness, and a Lecturer at Stanford University. With a PhD in nutritional biochemistry, she has conducted extensive research on the impact of nutrition and exercise on muscle health, performance, and recovery. During this conversation, Dr. Pojednic and Erin discuss the growing body of evidence around creatine supplementation for women, the importance of muscle maintenance for longevity, and how to sift through wellness trends to find what truly works. The episode also explores common wellness myths, the science behind GLP-1 medications, and why focusing on the long-term approach to health is key to living your best life. Episode Highlights Creatine for Women: Dr. Pojednic discusses how creatine supplementation (3-5 grams per day) is showing promising results for women's cognitive health and physical performance, with no need for a loading phase. The benefits accumulate in muscles and other tissues, including the brain. Debunking Wellness Myths: The conversation dives into common wellness trends and myths, with Dr. Pojednic pointing out that supplements should be viewed as tools for marginal gains, not miracle solutions. Foundational nutrition—getting enough protein, fiber, and healthy fats—remains crucial. The Truth About GLP-1 Supplements: Dr. Pojednic explains the difference between prescription GLP-1 medications (like Ozempic and Wegovy) and the herbal supplements that claim to mimic them. While some herbs may mildly stimulate GLP-1 production, they cannot match the potency of the prescription versions, which are GLP-1 receptor agonists. Why Muscle Maintenance Matters: Dr. Pojednic emphasizes the importance of maintaining lean muscle mass, particularly for women, to ensure long-term health and vitality. Strength training is key to improving performance and supporting longevity, especially as muscle loss accelerates starting in your 30s. Long-Term Health and Longevity: Rather than focusing on achieving a specific body image or trying to extend life by a few years, Dr. Pojednic talks about the importance of increasing healthspan—living a strong, active life well into old age. Avoiding Shiny Object Syndrome in Wellness: Dr. Pojednic shares her perspective on how wellness trends and quick fixes can be distracting. She encourages focusing on long-term goals and taking an evidence-based approach to supplements, exercise, and overall health. Did a recent human capital move finally signal that Glanbia Performance Nutrition intends to transform into a “functional beverage powerhouse” long-term that I've been talking about for the last few years? Glanbia Performance Nutrition is one of two divisions of Glanbia plc (LON:GLB), a multibillion-dollar global nutrition company. The brands in the Glanbia Performance Nutrition portfolio include; Optimum Nutrition, BSN, think!, Isopure, Amazing Grass, and SlimFast. I'll use the recent earnings report, earnings call, and associated news to update you on how Glanbia Nutritionals and Glanbia Performance Nutrition is performing against the complex operating environment. Glanbia Performance Nutrition had 2024 first nine month of 2024 revenue growth of 1.7% YoY. The brand portfolio had volume growth of 3.2%, but that was more than offset by price decline of 4% YoY. Additionally, I'll dive deeper into Glanbia Performance Nutrition geographical and product categorial performance (performance nutrition, healthy lifestyle, and weight management). BTW I'm thinking about the creation of a change.org petition for the Glanbia Performance Nutrition division name to be amended to The Optimum Nutrition Company. This one brand alone now accounts for 65% of the total GPN revenue. In first nine months of 2024, Optimum Nutrition had 6.4% YoY growth coming from strong volume gains, but U.S. market retail consumption growth in tracked channels was up 1.1% over the recent 13-week period. Additionally, Optimum Nutrition generated over $1.1 billion in revenue last year...which makes it the number one sports nutrition brand in the world and also the top sports nutrition brand in 18 different countries. Finally, I talk through why I think the recent hiring of GPN Americas President and an announced Glanbia group transformation program sounds like the perfect opportunity to strategically align around GPN becoming a “functional beverage powerhouse” long-term. The RTD beverage format accounts for about 8% of the total GPN revenue…and that basically $150 million in 2024 revenue comes from four main products (across three different GPN brands). Yet, all of the focus will likely be placed on the Optimum Nutrition and ISOPURE protein beverages that have underperformed compared to market leaders like Premier Protein. Want to get in touch? Send Claire a message! In Episode 99 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, I'm doing a deeper dive into low energy availability and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, aka REDs, with sports dietitian, eating disorder specialist, and REDs expert, Rebecca McConville, MS RD LD CSSD CEDRD. Rebecca wrote the book “Finding Your Sweet Spot - How to Avoid REDs,” and offers a REDs informed provider certification program, which I took and loved earlier this year. I was eager to get her on the podcast because she does an amazing job of translating the science into digestible information that everyone can relate to and understand.Even if you're familiar with low energy availability and REDs, you will want to listen to this episode. Rebecca uses a variety of helpful analogies to explain the often complex ways that the body responds to chronic underfueling over time. Also, we dig into many different health and performance consequences of REDs, including some that may not be on your radar. For example, did you know that high cholesterol can result from chronic underfueling and may be a sign that your body is in survival mode?If you think REDs doesn't apply to you because you don't play sports, think again. REDs applies to anyone who is active, and is very common among recreational athletes. There's SO MUCH more to this topic that we didn't have time to cover, so I'll just have to get Rebecca back on the show when she is done with her next book to continue our awesome conversation. I've said this about many interviews, but this was honestly one of my favorite episodes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Support the showThanks for listening! Want to get in touch? Send Claire a message! In Episode 94 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, sports dietitian Holley Samuel (MS RD CSSD) joins me to talk about body image among athletes. Holley and I explore how you can improve or at least neutralize your mindset when experiencing negative body image so that you can embrace fueling yourself adequately and withstand the physical demands of training and of life. We also discuss specific strategies we use when we've helped an athlete eat, feel and perform better, but they still struggle with poor body image. Prioritizing health over physical appearance is crucial, especially if you hope to have longevity in your sport and other life activities. Please know that I understand how hard this can be. Body image struggles are very common, and I certainly am not immune to this! Our bodies are meant to change dramatically throughout our life, but this does not mean it's easy to accept these changes. Improving mindset is a skill that takes ongoing work to develop, and there are no quick fixes. I hope this episode helps you get started! One last thing - Holley and I are not therapists. We frequently work on body image and mindset with our clients, but respect our scope of expertise. Please consider seeking mental health support if you are really struggling.
