Another Parry with USA Fencing’s Phil Andrews: Bonus Replay

I'm heading off to the Sports Business Journal's 25th annual celebration tonight (11/22), toasting "40 Under 40" in Sports Marketing, which includes the CEO of USA Fencing, Phil Andrews. So, in homage, and since his triumphant return from the Olympics and Paralympics which took place after this recording, I'm sharing a replay of our Insider Interviews episode, ICYMI! And, if you were living under a rock, know that history was made. I asked Phil for his recap and he said: "We made history at Paris 2024 on and off the piste, sharing the gold medal lead for the first time and an historic all-American final. Back home we had 35,000 people try Fencing over the Games, moved from 12th to 6th in our media share and have seen 12.7% growth in the business post-Games; while we've signed 4 new partners, including a record breaking deal with Italian brand Macron who are seeing the benefits from our expanded presence.” -- Phil Andrews Wow. So, to better understand how niche sports like fencing can not only stay relevant but grow their fanbase, here's Phil Andrews, who I called the British Ted Lasso for bringing a Midas touch to the world of parries and ripostes as CEO. I also encourage you to visit the team News site to really see why Phil is being honored: from promoting the sport to a diverse community to growing sponsorships to innovating ways to increase awareness through sweepstakes and experiential marketing. He is, himself, gold. In advance of the Paris Olympic Games, Phil and I explored how he's applying creative strategies to boost awareness, revenue, and membership in a sport that still takes some explaining. Which he does beautifully. For this audience, he also shares his data-driven approach to attracting sponsors, revealing, "We have to, to be candid, fight dirty a little bit. We don't have the brand of a New York Yankees or even a USA Gymnastics where you're buying brand and eyeballs. But we have data, we have people, and we have a direct road to them." This innovative thinking has led to partnerships with brands like Naked Wines, Avis, and Hilton. Phil even teases an upcoming sponsorship that's perfectly on-point: the "Official Fence of Fencers." Talk about targeted marketing! But it's not all about the money. Phil is passionate about making fencing accessible to all. He discusses USA Fencing's award-winning diversity and inclusion initiatives, including the "Fencing the Gap" program. "The idea of Fencing the Gap is very simple. It's grant funding that we can put towards fencers who otherwise can't afford to play the sport," Phil explains. Get ready for some Olympic-sized insights as Phil breaks down: - The complexities of Olympic sponsorships (it's not as simple as you might think!) vs sponsorships of the NGBs (National Governing Bodies). - How USA Fencing is bringing the Olympic experience to communities across America allowing locals to fence with some greats in 10 cities this summer.  - The surprising connection between fencing and the NCAA (hint: it's not just about the sport) - Why listing women first in team announcements is a small but powerful change. Olympic-bound Team USA Fencing As a bonus, listeners get a glimpse into Phil's personal life, including his connection to me (spoiler: we met last year when I discovered we were related by marriage!). Phil even shares why he told Sports Business Journal in his interview as a "40 Under 40" that Insider Interviews is his go-to podcast!: "A lot of what I've done over my career is taking other people's ideas and applying them into Olympic and Paralympic sport. That's how we've done things differently. And so I find it a great way to listen to, as the title suggests, an insider and apply their ideas to what we do." This "40 under 40" picked Insider Interviews as #1! Whether you're a marketing pro looking for fresh ideas, a sports enthusiast curious about the business behind the games, or just someone who appreciates a good underdog stor...

Phil Andrews: The Future of USA Fencing Events

Phil Andrews is credited with making multiple changes for the better over a decade of service at USA Weightlifting, including the past six years as CEO, and overseeing an elite team that at the Tokyo Olympics took home its first Olympic silver in women's weightlifting. Among his challenges at the governing body was a deep debate internationally over the future of the sport, one that very well may see weightlifting removed from the Olympic program in future years over concerns about their approach, or lack thereof, to doping at the international level. Andrews was a fighter for the anti-doping cause, an effort that he pushed as he also fought to expand the sport of weightlifting to the widest audience possible in the United States. In July, he was named CEO of USA Fencing, an organization that has had its own challenges in recent years, especially in areas surrounding SafeSport. But it's an organization with an even larger membership than weightlifting — around 40,000 members compared to about 30,000 — and one that produces some sizable events, including its Summer Nationals, which were most recently held at the convention center in Minneapolis. Andrews will spend the next few months on a listening tour among his new constituents, but before he does, he sat down with SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz to discuss his own history in the sport, the future of the NGB's events, its desires to partner more with potential host cities and how in the world light sabers may fit into the equation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We discuss the best ARK portfolio holdings to buy during drawdowns and why Phil believes $ARKG is the ETF most well situated to thrive as ARK AUM grows. I ask Phil about the bull case for $TDOC, $BLI and a number of other names. Phil reviews new and upcoming features for the Cathie's Ark website (filters, timelines and plans for upcoming FDA release data). I get Phil's reactions to ARK's new positions in $DKNG and $TWTR.  We close with some questions from Twitter and Cathie's Ark's Trading Floor, including Phil's takes on $NNDM, $BNGO, $PACB and dollar-cost averaging. Cathie's Ark (https://cathiesark.com/) has been an indispensable resource for me as an investor in $ARKK and I highly recommend checking out the website, joining the Trading Floor community and signing up for email notifications (https://cathiesark.com/daily-trade-email).

Welcome to this week's The New P&L TO THE POINT- a weekly podcast series where, in around 10 minutes each Friday, we break down the key elements of our weekly The New P&L conversations with industry leaders and entrepreneurs. We offer an opinion on the key points from the conversations and tips on how our listeners may practically apply them in their businesses. In today's episode of The New P&L TO THE POINT analyses this week's The New P&L conversation with Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Weightlifting. We consider the subtleties required when attempting to positively change the culture of a business or organisation, including the need to start by listening with intent and with empathy; the importance of ensuring you don't strip out the best element of an incumbent culture in your ardent desire for change, those components that are positively holding that culture together; the multiple benefits of building a winning mindset; that leaders need to remember ‘they lead humans not robots', and the power of margin gains when it is adapted and applied to the needs of the individual. Changing an organisation's culture takes time, commitment and most of all, nuanced understanding. Leaders that come into businesses and organisations and take a wrecking ball to the culture, however underperforming it might be, so often inadvertently strip away the good things that still exist and are fighting to breathe within that culture. In doing this, these new leaders risk alienating the very people and processes they need to build the foundations of a new, stronger culture for the future. This week, we speak to Phil Andrews, the dynamic young CEO of USA Weightlifting. Phil's leadership philosophy is built around listening with empathy and understanding first - before taking action; and it is this philosophy that he applied with vigour when he started his tenure at USA Weightlifting. We discuss with Phil the role of empathy in leadership and its impact on relationships, productivity, and culture; how to change a business's strategy to recreate winning mindset; the benefits of the theory of ‘margins gains' when you put individual needs at the centre of it; and how the magic happens in business when you ‘treat people as humans not robots'. My guest today is Phil Andrews, the creator of Cathie's Ark (cathiesark.com). I use Cathie's Ark almost daily to source investing ideas by looking at trade data from the ARK Invest ETFs. Phil has done an amazing job making this data understandable and actionable. Phil gives the backstory behind Cathie's Ark and the underlying sources of data for the website. He explains the many reasons for changing fund compositions in ARKK, ARKW, ARKG, ARKF, including forced buying and selling of equities due to buys and sells of the ETF shares, potential limits around how much of public companies Cathie Wood and team are willing to own and risk limits ARK observes. Phil overviews the hidden risk in how buying or selling of ARK ETF shares can compound up moves or drawdowns. I ask Phil about recent trends in the ARK ETFs and he reviews increases in TDOC across the funds (250%+ increase in ARKK in 2 months), selling out of ILMN after a questionable acquisition and more. Phil dives deep on genomics and the implications of AlphaFold on Google, which is now an ARKG holding. We review the top holdings in his PA (TSLA, OPEN, Bitcoin) and how it has been influenced by ARK. Phil walks through some of the many features on Cathie's Ark, including how to review portfolio trends, contributions over specific time periods to ETF returns, tracing a stock's growth or decline in ARK ETFs, the Trading Floor and more. Importantly, Phil highlights why it's important to him that Cathie's Ark will always be free and the benefits of knowledge and transparency being spread on the internet. This conversation was awesome and I'm excited to dig into many of the names Phil talked about. I strongly recommend checking out https://cathiesark.com, the trading floor at http://tradingfloor.cathiesark.com and the Cathie's Ark Twitter feed at https://twitter.com/cathiesark for more insights on the ARK Investing ETFs.
