MacKinnon Inks Deal That Makes Him Highest Paid Player in NHL

Nathan MacKinnon himself said he thought a deal between him and the Colorado Avalanche was close. He was right. MacKinnon and the Avalanche agreed on an 8 year, $12.6 million AAV deal which will make him the highest paid player in the league. Surpassing Edmonton superstar Connor McDavid by $100,000. The deal doesn't kick in until next season as MacKinnon plays the final year of his steal contract this coming season. It's a massive contract for one of the league's best players. But will it hamstring the Avs next season as they will need money to sign RFA's Alex Newhook and Bowen Byram. The Avs might have to lay low for a season, but can get right back into the game the following year when the salary cap is expected to go up significantly. A lot to break down here! Big 1st Period Carries Avalanche to 4-1 Win Over the Calgary Flames. Makar Misses Game With Injury

That losing streak is looking more and more like a thing of the past. The Colorado Avalanche used three 1st period goals to jump on the Calgary Flames early as they went on to their third straight victory with a 4-1 win in Alberta. Mikko Rantanen scored twice, the first one setting a franchise record in getting to 30 goals in the fewest games, beating out Joe Sakic by one game. Artturi Lehkonen added the other two goals as Alexandar Georgiev and solid defense kept Calgary from getting back in the game. Now the Avalanche take a day off and can hopefully get Cale Makar back as he was a late scratch and is listed as day-to-day. Tune in and subscribe! Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Should the Colorado Avalanche Exploit the LTIR Loophole with Gabriel Landeskog?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2023 40:39

The more we hear about Gabriel Landeskog, the more we think the further and further into the season he will return. Because of that, should the Colorado Avalanche exploit the NHL LTIR loophole where they can leave Landeskog and not have his salary cap number count against their cap number, make some trades to bring in some help, then bring him back for the playoffs (assuming they make the playoffs) where the salary cap goes away? It might be difficult to answer that now, but if Landeskog is not ready to go by the trade deadline, it could be a very real possibility for Colorado. We also talk about the under 23 list from Corey Pronman at The Athletic. On Pronman's last list in August of 2022, he included three Avalanche players (Ollausson, Newhook, and Byram). The list looks a little different on the updated version. We discuss. All that plus preparing for tonight's matchup against the Calgary Flames! Avalanche Come Back From 4-1 Deficit in 3rd. Lose on Late Power Play Goal to Panthers, 5-4

Once again, it was the tale of two teams. The Colorado Avalanche started their Tuesday night matchup against the Florida Panthers in pretty good form. But the wheels fell off pretty quickly as the Panthers scored 3 first period goals. This caused the Avs to look like they were just going through the motions and at the start of the 3rd period, down 4-1, I don't think we expected much. But that isn't how an Avalanche team opperates. One by one, the Avs started scoring and before you knew it, they had tied it up 4-4. But a missed high stick to J.T. Compher followed by a questionable no call for embellishment on Nick Cousins gave the Panthers a late game power play, which they connected on. A few minutes later, the game was over, and the Avs suffered yet another loss. A lot to break down here. Cale Makar was called "arrogant" by a New York Post reporter last week. But this is hardly the actions of an arrogant man. Why is what Makar did being talked about so much? Especially behind the fact that the Avs continue to play with a decimated roster, but are getting the most out of what they are putting out on the ice. And Alexandar Georgiev is a top goalie in the league. It's time everyone else recognizes that. Tune in and subscribe! Another year, another NHL season for the Colorado Avalanche already filled with injuries. Once again, the Avalanche are holding their own and near the top of the division standings despite these injuries. However, once again it seems like head coach Jared Bednar is getting shown little love by the hockey media for the job he is doing navigating these injuries and making his team relevant. Will this ever end? We also look at a fun article in The Athletic that takes user suggestions for rule changes in the NHL. Some make a whole lot of sense, some don't, and some are flat our hilarious and should be implemented immediately. All that plus looking at tonight's game against the Vancouver Canucks! Makar Continues to Add to His Legacy. Avs Top Stars in Shootout, 3-2

Add "fewest games for a defenseman to get 200 points" to Cale Makar's list of accomplishments in his early career. Makar reached the milestone in his 195th game on a power play slapshot against the Dallas Stars Monday night and the Avs needed the shootout to get the extra point against the division leaders. It was a playoff atmosphere in Dallas in a game that had it all. Good offensive opportunities, fantastic goaltending, and a fight between Josh Manson and Jamie Benn that ended with Benn flat on his back after a knuckle sandwich to the face. These two teams will do it again at the end of the week, but for the Avs, it ended their 3-game road trip with all 6 points going the way of the Avs. Tune in and subscribe! The Colorado Avalanche played two games since our last recording. One against the Carolina Hurricanes (which Chris was in attendance for) and the other against the Washington Capitals. In Carolina, the Avalanche couldn't get anything going against the Hurricanes but somehow, someway pulled out a victory in OT, 3-2. In Washington, the Avalanche played their most complete game of the season, which also happened to be their first shutout of the season, in defeating the Capitals 4-0. We look at both games and discuss how this is similar to last year's Avs team who just found ways to win. Plus, the Avalanche play four games this week, two against the division leading Dallas Stars. How this week of games is a very important week for the Avs. Also, we discuss if Nathan MacKinnon should keep taking face-offs. Because...he hasn't been very good at them. Tune in and subscribe! Avs Throw Kitchen Sink at Blues, But Come Up Short, 3-2

Like Vincent Gambini in My Cousin Vinny, you win some you lose some. For the Colorado Avalanche, last night was the latter. The Avs threw 47 shots at St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington but could only find the back of the net twice, while St. Louis had two "excuse me" goals, then another by Jordan Kyrou to leave Denver with a much needed win for the Blues. Colorado found themselves with the very rare 6-on-3 power play at the end of the game, but overpassing and missed chances prevented the game from going into extra minutes. It's a frustrating loss, no doubt. But while the Avs missed a chance to put more distance between them and St. Louis there is still a decent amount of good to be found in the loss. The Colorado Avalanche made a couple roster moves in terms of their injured players and their salary cap. Placing Gabriel Landeskog and Darren Helm on LTIR does free up space for now with their salary cap, and if the Avs wanted to go out and bring in a player or two they could. But the Avs will have to be creative if they want to go that route with Gabe and Helm's caps numbers waiting there once they are able to return. It will be interesting to watch over the next couple of days or weeks. Even with all the injuries the Avs have been suffering, they went out and beat a very good Carolina Hurricanes team last weekend 4-1, with great performances from their top guys like Mikko Rantanen, Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon. Can the Avs continue the good play tonight against a struggling St. Louis team? We break it all down! Tune in and subscribe! The Colorado Avalanche paid tribute to long time commentator, Peter McNab Thursday night in an emotional pre-game ceremony. Ball Arena filled with applause instead of silence for all he has meant to the Avalanche franchise. The Avs decided not to fill his role, at least for this game, and announcer Mark Mosher pulled double duty in calling the action for the first time without his trusty sidekick. On the ice, the Avalanche looked great despite missing several key players whole bringing up some fresh faces from the Colorado Eagles team. In the end, it was a 5-3 win for the good guys. Nathan MacKinnon nabbed the 2nd Star of the Week in the NHL for his performance in the Global Series against the Columbus Blue Jackets. MacKinnon didn't score a goal but dished out seven apples in those two games. Which was enough for the league award. Apparently, getting a hat trick in your home country wasn't enough for Mikko Rantanen. We also take a look at the Central as it stands now. The Colorado Avalanche won two games in Finland but lost a legend back home in Denver. Peter McNab, the legendary Boston Bruin and Avalanche play-by-play announcer since the Avs moved to Colorado, passed away Sunday night. No matter how long you have been an Avs fan, all you have heard call Avs games in Peter McNab. It will be strange not to hear his excitement for calling hockey games, but the stories people will tell about their interactions with Peter will live on forever. On the ice, the Avalanche took both games against the Columbus Blue Jackets in Finland. In front of his home country, Mikko Rantanen stole the show with a game 1 hat trick, while depth players contributed more in these two games than at any other point in the season so far. Is this what the Avalanche needed to get on a more consistent path of play? We break it all down. Subscribe and enjoy! If it seems like it's been a while since the Colorado Avalanche have played, it's because it has been. The long break comes to an end as the Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets will play two in Finland. But are these games worth it? Sure, it's great to bring the game around the globe so some players can play in front of their home country, and fans can see their favorite players both from their home country and in general. But if the league wants to make this a big deal, why aren't they promoting it more? And why isn't it on one of the major sports channels instead of the NHL Network? We discuss. Finally, we didn't get to the mailbag questions yesterday, so we take care of that today. Tune in and subscribe! Say it ain't so! The president of the Pavel Francouz, our very own Shaggy, posed a question to a Twitter Space he was running in asking if Alexander Georgiev continues to play well, could that lead the Avs to put up Frankie in a trade? Now, Kyle is not suggesting the Avalanche will do so, and was just throwing the question out to stir up debate and conversation, but it does beg the question if the Avs are going to be buyers at the deadline like we expect them to be, could they have to part ways with Frankie if they want to fill any holes in the roster? We discuss. We also take a look at the Avalanche November schedule, which should have them pretty rested before heading into a full December schedule. The flight to Finland got a little longer thanks to a rough couple of games on the east coast for the Colorado Avalanche. First, it was a 1-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Pavel Francouz got the performance he was in need of, but the Avs couldn't help out their backup goalie with any offensive production in getting shutout for the first time this year. Then it was on to Long Island where the Avs built up a nice 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd period, only to see the Islanders net five straight goals to beat the Avs 5-4. As far as the outlook of the season, there is no reason to panic. But that doesn't mean the way the Avs and in particular, the depth, are playing isn't fair game to criticize.
