Periodical cicadas are amazing animals - they spend nearly 13 or 17 years underground, and all decide, together, to come out and party in your trees at the same time. They are loud, and perhaps you think they are annoying. But they are one of the most accessible demonstrations of nature's abundance that still occurs. But cicadas are super important to our ecosystems and the food webs that support life. Their story is full of history, drama, and even optimism. And right now, as this is being released in 2024, a rare "double emergence" is occurring. So now is the time to give cicadas a second look, and see just how magical the "magicicada" genus is. Host Griff Griffith, with the help of renowned cicada researchers Dr. Chris Simon, Dr. Gene Kritsky, and Dr. Matt Kasson, as well as All Bugs Go to Kevin founder Kevin Wiener, takes a fun, and sometimes disturbing look at cicadas, why they matter, and how they reflect biodiversity in general.See the Full Show Notes and photos on Jumpstart Nature's web page.Beyond a podcast, Jumpstart Nature is a movement fueled by volunteers, igniting a fresh approach to reconnecting people with the natural world. 2024 is going to be another year of the cicada, with the emergence of two periodical cicada groups, or broods (Brood XIII and Brood XIX), at the same time, roughly in late April to early May.Now, throughout much of the world, cicadas serenade us in summer afternoons - you might be familiar with that, and wonder “what's the big deal”.But in a few special locations, periodical cicadas emerge on a specific cycle, every 13 or 17 years. These emergences are like clockwork - somehow these insects know exactly when to emerge from the ground, in synchrony with each other, across a vast geography. But it gets better still. Multiple species of cicada emerge together, sometimes in massive numbers approaching 1.5 million per acre of land. And weirder still, these same species might emerge on a totally different schedule, offset by years, in areas a few hundred miles away. What's going on here? Well, this is just the start when it comes to the amazing aspects of cicadas. And today's guest, Dr. Chris Simon, is perhaps the world's expert on Cicadas. She joined me for an incredible wide-ranging discussion all the way from New Zealand.Dr. Simon has been studying cicadas for decades. She is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and has a list of accolades so long that I could spend several minutes reading them.So get ready to learn why these broods of cicadas emerge as they do, how glaciation influenced their locations, why 13 year cicadas tend to occur further south than 17 year cicadas, and of course, how you can see them too. You can find more about Dr. Simon at cicadas.uconn.edu. And if you are interested in helping contribute to research on cicadas, download the cicada safari app from Apple or Google. Photo Courtesy of Media Matters for America On today's show, Media Matters for America‘s climate and energy senior researcher Evlondo Cooper is back to discuss more of his findings from the 2023 climate coverage by corporate media or lack thereof. A new analysis from Media Matters' Climate and Energy Program found that coverage of environmental justice stories on morning and nightly news shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC suffered a decrease in the total number of segments in 2023, airing just 9 segments about environmental impacts, regulations, or health hazards that included a mention of a socially marginalized community. This is down from 12 segments in 2022 and 19 segments in 2021. We'll switch gears and get an education on the double hatching of cicadas from University of Connecticut professor Dr. Chris Simon. Of all the creatures that are a marker for healthy biodiversity, one of the best examples is the cicada.  This spring, two large broods of periodical cicadas—one in the Midwest that emerges every 13 years and one in the Southeast that emerges every 17 years—will come out at the same time. There's plenty of sports Madness to unpack and then some, as the latest episode comes your way. On deck: (3:45) The Madness has arrived that is the NCAA Tournament. I'll break down the four brackets. Who has it rough? (UCONN) Who does not? (Purdue) What bracket is wide open? (South) Which teams could be sleepers? (Grand Canyon & James Madison, anyone?) But in the end, who do I think will be part of the Final Four in Phoenix two weeks from Saturday. I'll share a brief thought on the women's tournament as I would think that ESPN would want to see an LSU-South Carolina championship game, with LSU & Iowa (and Caitlin Clark) to play in the regional final. (26:43) As for the pros, it's been a low key week, despite the Celtics hanging on to beat the Bucks without Giannis last night. I'll look at what the schedule has over the next few days as the NBA will get swallowed by college basketball over the next couple of weeks. (29:40) Sadly, there were two tragedies in the NHL this week. Konstantin Koltsov, who played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the mid 2000's and was dating #2 women's tennis player in the world Aryna Sabalenka, died on Monday at the age of 42. Then there was Chris Simon, who won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996 and one of the toughest players in the history of the league, died later shortly after Koltsov at the age of 52. Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews is not only gunning for an MVP, but also a 70 goal season as he netted two vs. Washington last night and currently has 56. In the same game, Alexander Ovechkin scored a pair and needs just 50 goals to surpass Wayne Gretzky as the all time leader in goals scored throughout a career. There's a big matchup on Saturday night as the Florida Panthers will visit the NY Rangers as both teams jockey for positioning in the Eastern Conference. (44:25) Don't look now, but the MLB season has begun. Not here in the States, but in Korea as you had the Dodgers-Padres play a two game series. The bigger story is the firing of star Shohei Ohtani's interpreter, based on gambling debts that he owes and Ohtani having money stolen from his account to pay those wagers. Was Ohtani involved? Did he have a clue that his interpreter was gambling and that money was transferred out of his account? This will generate more buzz as the Dodgers arrive back to US soil. I'll suggest what Ohtani and the Dodgers should do to avoid a complete firestorm with the media which will surely inquire as to how much Ohtani was involved in this situation. (52:21) There are a couple of NFL signings to unwrap (WR Mike Williams to the Jets. Chase Young to the Saints) And another retirement to report as Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch had to step down because his body wouldn't cooperate as he was dealing with a serious neck injury. (55:43) Before you can experience a 12 team playoff in college football, all nine conferences have agreed to approve a 14 team playoff starting in 2026. ESPN just inked a seven year deal until 2031-32 season for $7.8 billion dollars, so we know what this all boils down to! The GREEN! I'm honored to welcome in a new partnership to the podcast. Frank is back from covering the NHL GM Meetings in Florida and today on the pod, he and Gregor kicked things off by recapping what the league decided to change within the game. That led to a big conversation about what the league's General Managers didn't discuss over the last few days and that sparked a big rant from Gregor about what's wrong with the NHL's playoff format. They also hit on the future of emergency goalies and the idea of making it easier for teams to carry a third goalie so we don't get another ‘E-Bug' situation. Frank outlined why this is an important issue and he explained a few potential solutions to the problem. The status of the Arizona Coyotes was also brought up. The league had a chance to come out and confirm that the Coyotes would be staying at Mullett Arena and they didn't do that. Frank explained that point a little bit and explained the timeline that the Coyotes are currently facing.Frank and Jason also talked about the league's vague comments about CTE in the days following Chris Simon's passing.Tyler swung by with a fresh edition of Fill in the Blank where he got the guys take on Flyers Head Coach John Tortorella healthy scratching Captain Sean Couturier, the state of the Montreal Canadiens, and a potential first-round playoff matchup in the Western Conference.0:55 - GM Meetings recap & Gregor's rant11:10 - The future of the E-Bug20:10 - Will the Coyotes stay?29:40 - Chris Simon's passing43:40 - Fill in the Blank Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Join me for the last episode of the 2023 interview series where I sat down with Chris Simon, Founder and CEO of BTST and Co-Owner of Blk Swan. We discuss his journey as an entrepreneur, his love for golf, and the importance of going to grad school for his development as a leader. Don't miss out on this insightful conversation. In 2008 Chris Simon started BTST Mentoring Services. His enthusiasm for service was palpable. It was not long before he was awarded his first contract with a level 5 school, Florence Bertell, now known as New Visions Academy. BTST continued to grow beyond Baltimore City and began providing services to several counties throughout the state of Maryland. Now called BTST Services, the company has expanded to include 5 facilities in several different counties in Maryland including Baltimore City, PG County, Frederick County, Washington County, and Cecil County providing services such as outpatient mental health clinics, psychiatric rehabilitation programs, and substance abuse. In recent years, Chris has continued to grow as an entrepreneur. Presently, Chris Simon is CEO of Simon Enterprises, which encompasses several companies such as Xtra-Ordinary Creative Consulting Company, Simon Development, Cornerstone Health Management, and Lorraine's Cleaning. He has received numerous awards such as the Small Business Administration Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and KEYS Development Award for being a leader in the field of mental health and most notably was recently awarded and recognized at the Light Health and Wellness Gala alongside Congressman Elijah Cummings and Dr. Galo who invented the term and treatment for HIV. Chris has been featured in the Baltimore Sun, Afro Newspaper, as well as the Black Business Review and is a Mental Health Contributor for local radio shows, news networks, and vlogs. He continues to support and give back to his alma mater Morgan State University where he is the President of the National Alumni Association of the School of Social Work at Morgan State University. Continuing his philanthropic pursuits, he launched a non-profit organization, BTST Cares that has helped the community by sponsoring yearly back-to-school book bag giveaways, turkey drives, Christmas big giveback, as well as help for Haiti, and providing clean water for Flint Michigan.
