In this episode our guest is A'magine. A'magine is an author, educator, speaker and filmmaker. She came to the cafe to discuss her documentary called At Your Cervix. A new film exposing the little-known unethical practice of conducting non-consensual pelvic exams on unconscious patients. Grab your warm drink and tune in for a great conversation! Some key takeaways:Consent is non-negotiable: Patients have the right to set clear boundaries and be fully informed about all medical procedures involving their bodies.Advocacy matters: Being proactive, asking questions, and educating oneself before medical appointments can help protect against unethical practices. Support is crucial: We must work together to enact legislation, address systemic issues, and provide resources to empower patients and hold institutions accountable. The lack of consent is a critical issue that affects patients and medical students alike. Gynecological teaching associates (GTAs) are an excellent way for medical students to learn how to do pelvic exams with feedback.Watch the film, At Your Cervix!About A'magineA'magine earned her Master's degree in Human Sexuality Education at New York University and has been teaching and speaking about feminism and sexuality for over two decades. Formerly known as Amy Jo Goddard, she is author of Woman on Fire: Nine Elements to Wake up Your Erotic Energy, Personal Power and Sexual Intelligence and co-author of the best-selling classic Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men, both published by Penguin Random House. A coastal transplant to New Mexico, she currently thrives in the desert of the southwest, residing with her wild feline friends, who, she claims are evolved teachers about empowered sexuality and healthy boundaries.A'magine was named one of Go Magazine's “100 Women We Love” and Kinkly's “100 Sex Blogging Superheroes.” She works with women and couples on their sexual and relationship lives and she is a corporate and media consultant. She helps companies, media outlets, health care institutions and universities improve workplaces and the lives of women and elevate media representations of women and LGBTQ people. A'magine's award winning documentary film, At Your Cervix, aims to improve pelvic exams for all patients and to end unethical medical practices that harm women and transgender people. A'magine has begun to advocate for state laws banning the use of anesthetized patients without consent. I like to think we're living in a more consent-aware world than we used to be. We speak about the sexual ideal of enthusiastic consent required before engaging in sexual acts. And yet, recent research demonstrates that in the medical community, what happens with our bodies is often far outside that consent, with almost 90% of medical students being asked to perform pelvic examinations on patients under anesthesia. Our guest this week, A'magine Goddard, is a filmmaker whose new documentary “At Your Cervix” examines how this happens and the effects of these exams. And listeners, be aware that this episode contains frank discussions of these non-consensual examinations. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message
Did you know that you can go in for any kind of surgery at a teaching hospital, and while under anesthesia receive pelvic exams, from multiple students, (yes this happens to men with anal or prostate exams) without your consent? Most people are shocked to discover that they could go in for a knee surgery and be given an anal or pelvic exam they did not consent to. However, let's call it what it is, medical rape and 85% of medical students currently report having done this. On today's episode I speak with activist, author, educator, speaker and filmmaker A'magine about her award winning documentary film that tackles this topic, At Your Cervix. These pervasive exams are still very much legal in 27 states in the US and continues to occur where it is illegal despite laws meant to prevent this practice. Together A'magine and Charna talk about when pelvic exams happen when you're unconscious, medical rape, sexual assualt in Western medicine, and unlearning the dehumanization that causes sexual assault in the medical filed and society at large. The conversation is capped with an embodied mindfulness practice led by @Amagine.

It’s legal in the majority of the US for medical students to perform educational pelvic exams on anesthetized patients without their knowledge. Amy Jo Goddard has been working for years to put a stop to this practice and is producing a documentary on the issue called At Your Cervix. In this conversation, she tells us how unbelievably prevalent this practice is. She also gives accounts from women this has happened to and from medical students uncomfortable with this requirement but afraid to jeopardize their grades by refusing. We also learn about the dark history of gynecology, the work Amy Jo has done to help make these exams illegal in certain parts of the US, how Gynecological Teaching Assistants can give better training to students, plus she gives tips on how we can protect ourselves when we’re in the care of medical professionals. (Content note: If you’re a survivor of sexual assault-- especially in a medical context or someone who has had prior medical procedures under anesthesia, some of what we discuss may be difficult to hear. I want you to know that before listening and reassure you that even if you’re a die-hard American Sex fan & never miss an episode, it’s fine to sit this one out.
