Kirk shares his personal experiences and insights on how to approach parenting with compassion and understanding. Leslie and Kirk will explore practical strategies for calming children, the importance of validating their emotions, and the role of parents in managing their own responses. Meet the Guest: CelebrateCalm.com Founder and Calm Parenting Podcast host Kirk Martin has shown almost 1,000,000 parents how to stop the yelling, defiance, and power struggles with the most strong-willed children. Kirk is known for very practical strategies and scripts delivered with humor and compassion. Learn how to get your kids to listen the first time while building a close, trusting relationship. Key Takeaways:Kids with big emotions are often strong-willed and challenging. Parents should focus on changing their own responses rather than trying to change their children. It's normal for children to have big emotions; it's part of their development. Giving children a sense of control can help calm them down during meltdowns. Movement can be an effective tool for emotional regulation in children. Validating a child's feelings with intensity can help them feel understood. Creating space for children to process their emotions is important. Building a relationship with children encourages them to come to parents for support. Parents should not feel guilty for their children's emotional struggles. Discipline should be approached with a mindset of teaching rather than punishment. Five Exact Steps for a Strong-Emotional Child: 1) Give the child something he or she is in control of. 2) Control yourself first as the parent (tone of voice, body posture) 3) Motion changes emotion. 4) Use positive intensity. 5) Give kids space to process and don't look them in the eyes! https://youtu.be/QxsWpOTuPVIAdditional Resources:Celebrate Calm WebsiteCalm Parenting Podcast IG PageSecure a ticket to the 2025 TTD Convention in either Dayton OH, Pigeon Forge TN, or Branson MO!Podcast Sponsors: From DreamWorks Animation comes a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown's beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot. On this episode of The Fresh Start Family Show, Wendy chats with the funny and insightful Kirk Martin, founder of Celebrate Calm and host of the Calm Parenting podcast. They explore 3 tools we can use to help de-escalate situations with our strong-willed kids when they're upset that are effective and actually create closeness when parenting a strong-willed kiddo: Self-Regulation: We must control our own emotions first before we address the child. The quickest way to change your child's behavior is to first control your own. Movement: Motion changes emotion. Sometimes talking makes kids more upset. Use movement to help calm an upset child. Connection: Relationships change behavior. Staying connected, especially during discipline creates trust & safety, which kids NEED in order to learn effective self-regulation. Strong-willed kids are incredible, AND they can often be misunderstood. This episode gives us a fresh and empowered perspective on these kiddos and how to support their big feelings. I love Kirk's realistic approach to parenting. He understands what your home dynamics are like. And gives practical tips. After listening to today's episode you will have at least three different “tricks” to apply. Most of all, I'm thankful for the new perspective he has given me. Kirk helped me recognize how emotionally invested I was in my boys' behavior and freed me from the need to regulate their behavior for them. The last couple days I've enjoyed the boys more. I'm also less tense and frustrated when we are out in public. In fact, I may need to go back and listen to this episode more than once, so it sticks! This episode originally aired in May of 2015 Kirk came back on the show multiple times. Check out additional episodes here. What we chat about: Kirk's realization that he needed to focus on his own behavior and stop trying to fix his son's strong-willed behavior. The switch he made from training 1500 kids in his home to training parents to calm themselves. The one thing you can do today to de-escalate a tense situation in your home. How to calmly handle your child's meltdown I can only control one person in life, and that's me. How motion changes emotion–helping little ones calm down b/c they don't know how to “think” their way out. What to do in the middle of Target aisle 3 when your child freaks out Handling a tantruming child when his siblings are fighting and another needs help with homework and dinner is cooking (Heather's daily 5 pm reality). If you don't care enough about yourself, to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, spiritually. . .why would anyone else care? How sometimes parents want good behavior so badly, they are too invested in it and give children too much control. How to be an impartial giver of wisdom. Write down your emotional triggers & do the opposite of what you normally do. Whether it's a teammate at work or a child at home, helping others to improve can be frustrating, especially when they don't respond to consequences...and maybe push your buttons.Today's guest has spent decades working with thousands of families with strong-willed children. Kirk Martin is the founder of Celebrate Calm and host of the Calm Parenting Podcast. On this episode of The Clarity Advisors Show, he and host Ken Trupke look at the overlap between good parenting principles and good leadership principles and share practical tips to help you be a better parent...and a better leader.Timestamps:(01:26): Origins of Celebrate Calm.(04:52): Turning it into a business.(07:41): Evolution of the product and the team.(10:47): Misconceptions about strong-willed kids(16:55): Escalating our own problems.(23:35): Importance of validation.(25:08): Giving space to respond rather than react.(26:20): Body posture.(28:57): Performing under pressure.(36:30): How strong-willed kids are like adults.(38:31): Ways to learn more and contact Kirk Martin.Episode quotes:“I loved my son, but I just spent all my time trying to change him. I thought he was the issue because he's so difficult...until I realized he was just like me. I was the issue.”“The quickest way to change your child's behavior is to first control your own because we trigger each other all the time.”“ADHD is pretty much a predictor of a really good entrepreneur.”“With parenting strong-willed kids, so much of it is tone of voice. I wanted to do recordings because mom could listen, dad could listen, and they could get down the tone of voice to use with a strong-willed child.”“It's not like consequences keep us from making bad choices. Jails aren't filled because people didn't know the consequence of stealing or murder. They knew the consequence, but there's usually something deeper going on.”“This isn't permissive parenting, where we'll just let them do whatever they want. Not at all. It's teaching because discipline literally means to teach.”“There's something about sitting that changes my tone of voice. Instead of standing in a cubicle over the employee or my colleague, if I come in and just sit, it changes something. It creates a different dynamic and you talk a little bit differently.”“You don't have to (react) in the moment. You're the leader. If somebody's in your office or on the phone and they bring something up, you can say, ‘Hey, I really want to give that the attention it deserves and I can't do that right now. Let me consider it and give you a call back,” to buy yourself some time (to respond).” (Ken)“Strong-willed kids aren't great at childhood, but they're really good at the adult world.”Recommended reading and listening:Calm Parenting Podcast with Kirk MartinForbes magazine interview with Kirk Martin Connect with Kirk Martin:CelebrateCalm.comCalm Parenting on Facebook
