A new feeding robot could return people's independence at mealtimes A group of friends is enjoying lunch together, however one of the friends is unable to use their arms so rely on a carer help them eat. Now a new robot – called FIDI – could return their independence at mealtimes. A robotic arm positioned on the table automatically delivers food to their mouth, using AI and cameras to adapt to the user's movements and behaviours, ensuring that the food reaches its intended destination—the person's mouth. Ania saw FIDI in action at Web Summit where she met Krzysztof Stelmach, the CEO of Semi Robotics and FIDI's creator. AI and its influence on history and religion Imagine the possibility of immersing yourself in a biblical scene or engaging in a direct conversation with a deity from another religious tradition. Alternatively, consider visiting an ancient landmark, such as the Colosseum in Rome, and experiencing life as the Romans did while interacting with a chatbot. Many of us see children arriving in the morning without having had a proper breakfast, often due to the rush of their parents' busy schedules. This can lead to children missing out on those vital connection times at home, and that's where we, as educators, have a significant role to play. I talk about how we can transform mealtimes from a rushed, stressful activity into a special time for connection and bonding. I share some of my experiences of how these moments, when done with care and intention, can become the heart of our day—an opportunity for the children to relax, laugh, and build stronger relationships with each other. It's also about setting the right atmosphere. Whether it's turning off the screens, eating with the children, or creating small rituals like setting the table together, these actions can have a powerful impact. I discuss the importance of role modelling during mealtimes, not just in terms of manners but in showing the children how to enjoy a variety of foods and the pleasure of sharing a meal with others. Key Points: Togetherness at Mealtimes: Mealtimes in family daycare can be a time for creating connections that children might be missing at home. The Power of Rituals: Small, meaningful rituals around mealtime can turn it into a calm, enjoyable part of the day. Role Modelling: As educators, eating with the children and demonstrating good manners and healthy eating habits is essential. Overcoming Daily Challenges: I also touch on how to manage those inevitable busy or stressful moments, turning them into opportunities for learning and connection. Reflection Questions: How do you structure mealtimes in your family daycare? Could they be more relaxed and enjoyable? What small rituals could you introduce to make these moments more meaningful? Send us a Text Message.If you're a bit confused about how much you should be wading in on your young adolescent's screen time then you're not alone. The truth is, there's been very little clear data to prove what we should and shouldn't be doing. Jonathan Haidt's book Anxiety Generation has turned the dial up on the whole subject and he's pushing hard for a ban on social media for younger teens because of the impact he says it has on them. Meanwhile, Natasha Devon is more keen on getting us parents to engage positively with our kids and teach them how to be their best selves online.So who's right? A new study from the University of California, published in the journal Paediatric Research, looked at the behaviour of ten thousand 12-13 year olds, and it's given parents a clearer understanding of what we should be doing. The most positive impact: is if we parents place limits on our own screen use, especially in front of our kids. The most negative thing to do is using screen time as a reward or a punishment - because they found it tends to increase the desire to be on their screens. “I wish someone would just tell me what to eat!” If you've ever thought this to yourself, then chances are you can relate to this… Mealtimes honestly used to feel like a chore to me. I would stress out over choosing what to eat. And if I was on any type of restrictive diet, it was often difficult figuring out which foods I could eat that would allow me to stick to my diet and not trigger gut discomfort. After a while, I ended up developing orthorexia, which is a fear of food that stems from being scared to eat. This actually made my gut issues worse! So imagine if mealtimes didn't have to be a chore and if choosing what to eat didn't stress you out… Most of us are misled into thinking that food itself is the cause of our gut issues or various symptoms, and if only we could find the “perfect” diet, we'd be healed. But think about how many diets are out there – if there actually was a perfect diet, why are we witnessing rising numbers of illnesses, obesity, and mysterious symptoms? Let's talk about why food is not our enemy and how we can shift our relationship with food so that it no longer has to be a source of stress in our lives. One particular challenge with mealtime stress arises in the context of family settings, where there may be different preferences and dislikes among family members. This not only makes mealtime less enjoyable but can also contribute to long-term anxiety issues. Additionally, mealtime can act as a trigger for disordered eating behaviors, as individuals may resort to controlling their food intake to cope with stress. To counter mealtime stress, we emphasize the importance of fostering a calm and happy environment during mealtimes. Arguments and power struggles should be avoided, as they can create negative atmospheres that persist beyond the dinner table. We suggest incorporating stress-relieving behaviors or practices, such as expressing gratitude before the meal, to promote relaxation and enjoyment. It's essential, however, to tailor these suggestions to what works best for each family. We recognize that everyone has different nervous systems, and some individuals may require a peaceful and quiet environment to feel at ease while eating. Parents, in particular, play a crucial role in creating a calm atmosphere during mealtimes. They should offer well-balanced meals and engage in conversations with their children about new foods. In this episode, my guest is Satchin Panda, PhD, professor and the director of the Regulatory Biology Laboratories at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. We discuss his lab's discovery that “time-restricted eating” (TRE) aka intermittent fasting, is beneficial effects for metabolic health and longevity.
