We often believe that great leadership comes from being an exceptional speaker, someone who can command a room and deliver compelling presentations. But what if the real superpower lies in the opposite skill? In this episode of the Listening Superpower podcast, join me in conversation with Jonno White, an Australian leadership coach, podcast host, and author with over four years of podcasting experience and 236 episodes under his belt. Jonno shares his fascinating journey from believing speaking was his greatest strength to discovering that listening is the ultimate leadership tool. Jonno shares his perspective on today's leadership challenges, from retaining younger talent to adapting leadership styles for different generations, and why understanding individual strengths might be more powerful than traditional role-based management. Whether you're a seasoned leader looking to enhance your people skills or someone just beginning to explore the power of listening, this episode will challenge your assumptions about what makes great communication. "The number one skill that comes up again and again is the power of listening. I had to unlearn what I learned when I was eight, because speaking was nowhere near as powerful as great listening." -- Jonno White SUPERPOWER Notes: 01:15 -- From Fear to Overconfidence: Jonno recounts his grade three experience giving a speech about ants, where faking confidence led to success and shaped his belief that speaking was his superpower. 05:30 -- The Coaching Revelation: Jonno shares how he discovered that clients weren't transformed by his advice, but by having space to think through their own thoughts and reach their own conclusions. 10:45 -- The Sherlock Holmes Approach: Jonno's technique of being a detective while listening, paying attention to body language, sighs of relief, and moments of weight in conversations. 12:30 -- Understanding vs. Being Understood: The crucial distinction between listening to understand someone and ensuring they know you understand them—and why paraphrasing is so powerful. 15:20 -- The 15-Second Rule: Jonno's disciplined approach to coaching, counting to 15 seconds before responding and how this technique transforms conversations. 18:45 -- The Valentine's Day Disaster: A humorous story about trying out scripted listening techniques on a romantic date and the importance of genuine connection over mechanical methods. 24:15 -- Modern Leadership Challenges: Jonno identifies three key issues leaders face today: adapting to new revenue generation needs, wellbeing challenges, and retaining staff across generations. 28:00 -- Generational Workplace Dynamics: A breakdown of how different generations respond to workplace demands and why leaders need to understand varying motivations. 31:45 -- Learning from Gen Z Boundaries: How younger generations' approach to boundaries might actually be healthier and what leaders can learn from this perspective. 34:30 -- From Arranger to Individualization: The shift from seeing what needs to be done and finding people to do it, versus seeing people and finding what they could do. Key Takeaways "People don't feel heard when the person across from them understands them. They feel heard the moment that they understand that the person across from them understands them." -- Jonno White "I spend most of my time counting in my head because I try to pause for 15 seconds... letting the silence do the heavy lifting." -- Jonno White "How can we get alongside them and say, I'm here. I'm present. What's going on? You're more important than the deadline." -- Jonno White "After all these years, I just keep getting reminded more and more that there really is no more important skill for a leader than to listen well." -- Jonno White Connect with Jonno White: Podcast: Leadership Conversations with Jonno White Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/leadership-conversations-with-jonno-white-podcast/id1593825558 Book: "Step Up or Step Out" https://www.amazon.com/Step-Up-Out-Difficult-Conflict/dp/B097X7B5LD https://www.consultclarity.org/ Email: Jonno@consultclarity.org Connect with Raquel Ark: https://listeningalchemy.com/ Mobile: + 491732340722 listeningsuperpower@gmail.com contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn: Raquel Ark

My focus today is on how to take tiny, manageable steps through our fears, allowing us to turn anxiety into confidence. Recognizing how anxiety can often introduce new fears in our lives, I discuss the common triggers that many of us experience, whether it's the anxiety of flying, public speaking, or even simply being in crowded spaces. These moments can provoke an immediate physical response, leaving us feeling vulnerable and uncomfortable. However, I propose a powerful reframe: these fears, rather than being obstacles, can serve as gateways to deeper confidence and inner peace. By gently facing and befriending our triggers, we begin to cultivate a strength that can ultimately help us tackle more profound anxieties, such as feelings of inadequacy or fear of rejection. The essence of this process lies in taking those initial small steps—steps that foster self-kindness and acknowledge the importance of gentleness in our healing journey.I outline three foundational steps to approach our fears, starting with creating proximity without pressure. Using the example of a fear of flying, I encourage listeners to take small, non-threatening actions, like just driving to the airport or sitting in the parking lot observing planes. This method emphasizes building a safe relationship with our fears, recognizing them without judgment, and allowing ourselves the freedom to retreat if needed. The next step involves gradually increasing our exposure by taking more active roles in confronting our fears, ensuring we're in a space where we can feel comfortable and safe while doing so.#anxiety #fear #confidence #tinysteps #healinganxiety #selfcompassion #courage #innerpeace #mentalhealth #anxietycoach #anxietyrelief #fearfacing #confidencebuilding #smallvictories #nervoussystemsupport #selfkindnessjourney #anxietytips #lovesmotivation #progressnotperfection #mentalhealthjourney #anxietyhelp #phobiasnomore #emotionalresilience #gradualexposuretherapy #mindfulanxiety #innerstrengthbuilding #selfsoothingtechniques #breakthecycle #connectionoverfear #imperfectaction #neurologicalrewiring #emotionalwellbeing #GinaRyan #ACP #Anxietycoachespodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Fear whispers rather than shouts—and that's precisely what makes it so dangerous for faith-based entrepreneurs. In this revealing episode launching the "From Fear to Courage" series, Ken Joslin tackles the number one struggle reported by high-performing business leaders: the paralyzing effect of fear on decision-making and vision.Drawing from Joshua's repeated command to "be strong and courageous," Ken uncovers a profound truth: you can't experience courage without first facing fear. The silent saboteur doesn't yell "STOP!"—it subtly whispers "play it safe," "you're not ready," or "who do you think you are?" These whispers are particularly effective because they mimic the still, small voice through which God often speaks, creating a discernment challenge for purpose-driven leaders.Through compelling stories and practical insights, Ken identifies five ways fear manifests in leadership: overthinking, perfectionism, procrastination, control, and playing small. Each manifestation comes with strategic counteractions, including the powerful reminder that "speed increases focus" and that God-ordained visions should occasionally make you question whether you have what it takes. The episode distinguishes between harmful fear that paralyzes and healthy fear—the reverence for God that positions us for purpose and breakthrough.Ready to move from fear to courage in your business and leadership? Do you set goals or resolutions but never achieve them? This week is a snippet from a recent GOAL SETTING WORKSHOP that Amanda led last week and she breaks down a really powerful process to help you achieve success this year.In order for you to do the work required to reach your goals it's essential to understand your trauma responses, how your nervous system and subconscious mind will try to protect you from risk (therefore tricking you to stay in your comfort zone and do nothing) and how to harness the powers of manifesting energy. So if you're not reaching your goals maybe you're not lazy or unmotivated, maybe your subconscious mind is protecting you and keeping you safe/small to avoid risk.I'll be teaching this inside my Membership ‘The High Vibe Tribe' that is NOW LIVE and I also go deep into this in my 1.5hr coaching offer ‘From Fear to Freedom' - message or comment for details or see my bio.Let's make 2025 the year that you get free from your past fears and habits to truly TRIVE and raise your vibe! We are excited to welcome Heather Hansen O'Neill as our guest for today. She is an internationally recognized speaker and behavior expert who has delivered two TEDx talks and authored three books. Heather thrives on adventure. She joins us today to discuss life and adventures, her program, The Element of Adventure, and dive into what it means to have vision, focus, and discipline. If you enjoy nature, helping others, seeking adventure, and are looking to transform your approach to business, you will love this engaging conversation with Heather Hansen O'Neill. Stay tuned for more! Early Life and Discipline Heather's professional journey began long before she started her business over 25 years ago. She became a professional dancer at the age of 13. She had to juggle her education and passion for dance while also working to help her parents pay for her dance classes. The rigorous lifestyle instilled resilience in her, along with a work ethic that later translated into business success, as it taught her invaluable lessons about discipline, perseverance, and pushing beyond her comfort zone. The Impact of Dance on Business Heather credits much of her business acumen to her background in dance. It required discipline for her to excel as a dancer. She had to endure long hours of practice, handle rejection, and maintain focus, contributing to her success in sales and entrepreneurship. Even after a career-ending injury, she continued to find ways to incorporate her passion for dance into her life, which she believes makes her do a lot better at everything else she does. Transition to Business and Speaking Her transition from dance to business came through sales, a field she entered while putting herself through college. After a client encouraged her to do it, Heather combined her sales experience and love for helping others to start a business. She initially focused on sales and customer service training, later expanding her career into coaching and becoming a keynote speaker. Her journey into speaking was gradual, driven by her desire to connect with and inspire audiences. Embracing Vulnerability in Speaking One of the most valuable lessons Heather learned as a speaker was the importance of vulnerability. Her performance background initially made her strive for perfection in her presentations, which created a barrier between her and her audience. Over time, she realized that being open about her mistakes and failures allowed her to connect more deeply with others, making her a more effective speaker. The Adventure Mindset Heather believes in embracing her adventure mindset, which challenges beliefs, assumptions, and judgments, to help individuals and teams unlock their full potential. She is an adventure junkie, so she incorporates her love for pushing boundaries into her speaking engagements. She uses her experiences of jumping out of airplanes, flying on a trapeze, and swimming with sharks to teach others about expanding their comfort zones. Humanity and Leadership Heather emphasizes the importance of caring for humanity in leadership. She believes that in the modern world, where isolation and polarization are prevalent, leaders have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact by genuinely caring for their people and communities. Her framework, which draws from the elements of nature, helps leaders assess and optimize their teams, ultimately driving both personal and organizational growth. Tips for Entrepreneurs For entrepreneurs, Heather stresses the importance of staying connected to the passion that drove them to start their businesses. She encourages them to focus on transforming their businesses while transforming how they do business by embracing innovation, seeking diverse perspectives, and always keeping humanity at the core of their actions. BIO: Heather Hansen O'Neill is an international keynote speaker, behavioral expert, 3x author, and adventure junkie. She is also a 2x TEDx speaker, host of the popular podcast From Fear to Fire, and creator of L-FOCUS (Leadership For Our Children's Ultimate Success).
