It's 2026. You're the CEO of a global bank or the Head of Surgery at a major hospital. An AI system looks at a complex set of volatile market data, or a patient's decade-long medical history, and gives you a directive. It doesn't just give you a percentage of probability. It tells you exactly what to do. But here is the catch: If that decision fails, "the machine told me so" won't hold up in court, in the boardroom, or at a patient's bedside. For a few years now, we've played a game of ‘black box' roulette, using AI that predicts the future based on the past. But in a world of sudden market shifts and unprecedented global change, the past is no longer a reliable map. We are entering the era of Automated Reasoning. This is the shift from AI that guesses to AI that proves. It's a market for explainable systems that is set to hit nearly ten billion dollars this year, doubling by 2032. Because today, leaders don't just need an answer; they need the logic behind it. They need a ‘glass box' they can trust. Scott Wiltamuth, Director of Software Development for Agentic AI and Automated Reasoning at AWS, alongside Mary Martin, Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG and Varun Chitkara, Senior Vice President of Global Product & Technology at ADP join host Tom Parker. In our second week of learning to Live In Love, Tom Parker brings us a message from Colossians 3 challenging us to examine what we're truly wearing in our spiritual lives. Just as we wouldn't want to wear an orange jumpsuit that represents imprisonment, we're called to strip off the old self and clothe ourselves with something far more beautiful. The text confronts us with uncomfortable truths about behaviors that fragment community: fornication, greed, anger, and dishonesty. These aren't just moral prohibitions, they're warnings like being told not to touch a 220-volt wire. God's warnings aren't judgmental but protective, meant to save us from wreckage. The stunning truth at the heart of this passage is our identity: we are chosen, holy, and beloved. This reality should take a lifetime to absorb into our souls. From this secure identity, we're invited to put on new clothing: compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. These aren't arbitrary virtues but reflections of God's own character, seen perfectly in Jesus Christ. The message culminates in a beautiful vision of Christian community where peace rules our hearts, gratitude overflows, and everything we do in word or deed is done in the name of Jesus. This isn't about external appearances but internal transformation that the Holy Spirit works in us, making us look more and more like our Creator.

This third week of our exploration of Jesus' Last Words, Tom Parker invites us into one of the most intimate metaphors Jesus used - the vine and the branches. At its heart, this passage reveals a stunning truth: we are offered friendship with God himself. Not just servanthood, not just obedience, but actual friendship. The imagery is organic and unavoidable - branches cannot produce grapes apart from the vine, and we cannot bear spiritual fruit apart from Jesus. What makes this message so compelling is its practicality. Abiding is not some mystical concept beyond our reach; it is as simple as talking to a friend, listening to their words, and learning their ways. We discover that prayer is not a technique for relaxation but a conversation with someone who loves us with the same love the Father has for Jesus - a love so vast our minds cannot fully comprehend it. The fruit that grows from this connection is not manufactured through effort but flows naturally: love, joy, kindness, and a sacrificial heart for others. This teaching challenges our American individualism by reminding us that being grafted into Christ means being grafted into His body, the church. We need each other, messy and imperfect as we are. The rhythm of the Christian life becomes like a heartbeat - drawing near to God and then being sent out, only to return again. This is not about religious duty but about life itself, for apart from this connection, we wither.

This week we begin a 9 week exploration of the book of Ecclesiastes as Tom Parker invites us to consider our mortality and the wisdom of humility. As we read Ecclesiastes 1, we're challenged to confront the brevity and cyclical nature of life. The scripture paints a stark picture of existence as 'hevel,' 'vanity,' 'smoke' - fleeting as a breath. Yet, far from being pessimistic, this wisdom literature invites us to embrace reality and find meaning within life's limitations. We're reminded that while generations come and go, the earth remains, highlighting our small place in the grand scheme. This perspective shift can be liberating, freeing us from the illusion of control and opening our hearts to God's eternal presence. As we grapple with life's repetitive nature - from daily chores to life's big questions - we're called to find joy in simple pleasures and trust in God's overarching plan, even when it's not immediately apparent. This message resonates deeply with our modern lives and our cultural moment, encouraging us to live humbly and purposefully in light of our mortality.

This week, Tom Parker invites us into the story of the Israelites in Exodus 17, where we see how God miraculously provides water from a rock in the desert. This narrative challenges us to examine our own reactions when faced with life's difficulties. Are we quick to complain and forget God's past faithfulness, or do we respond with trust and mature faith? The sermon encourages us to cultivate a 'holy memory' - remembering God's goodness in our lives, even amid challenging circumstances. It's a call to move beyond reactivity and develop emotional and spiritual maturity, recognizing that God's grace is abundant, even when we falter. As we reflect on our own 'thirsts' in life, we're reminded of Jesus' invitation to come to Him for living water, addressing both our physical and spiritual needs.

(Again) On the show this week we take a look at the fallout from the Iran Contra Affair. (Spoiler: No one went to jail.) Along the way we discover that Dave has a dubious idea of what “truth” means. (If you are just now learning this, welcome to the show) Then we dive into why Congress has the ability to investigate things. (Campaign advertisements) Then we talk about how a plane crash in Nicaragua and a magazine in Lebanon caused the whole Iran Contra Affair to come apart at the seams. (The magazine was Highlights for Kids) We take a look at how the Reagan Administration reacted to being accused of doing all the crimes they actually did and how Congress “accidentally” made sure no one would suffer any consequences for breaking the laws. Our Sponsor this week is Shreds It All, when you need documents gone fast, call Shreds it All.  We open with the Gipper denying he did anything wrong and close with Lily Kerbey and Tom Parker who want to be clear, it wasn't them. What the Riff?!?
1972 - February: Neil Young "Harvest"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2025 30:19

Neil Young's most successful solo album is also considered his signature album.  Harvest was Young's fourth solo studio album, and it topped the Billboard 200 chart in the US for two weeks while also spawning two top 40 singles.  Young grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, and began playing and songwriting there in several groups.  His first success as a songwriter came for a song he wrote for The Guess Who which made it to the top 40 in Canada.  He was in the Mynah Birds, a Toronto group fronted by a young Rick James.  The Mynah Birds were attempting to get signed by Motown when James was arrested for being AWOL from the Navy reserves. Shortly after this, Neil Young and bassist Bruce Palmer sold the group's equipment, bought a hearse, and used it to move to Los Angeles.  He then worked as a session musician and a member of Buffalo Springfield before striking out on his own solo work while also joining Crosby, Stills & Nash.Harvest was written after an acoustic tour the previous year, a tour prompted by a back injury Young sustained that required him to play sitting down for an extended time.  The album contains significant acoustic elements, as several tracks he played on that tour would appear on the album.  Many of the lyrics are related to Young's growing relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress.  Young was a success before recording this album, and was able to bring in a number of session musicians on several tracks including Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, and the London Symphony Orchestra.Surprisingly, the album met mixed reviews when released, though over time the critics' assessments would turn much more positive.  The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015.Wayne brings us this California country-tinged album for this week's podcast. Heart of GoldOne of the tracks that arose from Neil Young's acoustic tour, this song topped the charts in the United States and Canada, and went to number 10 in the UK.  Despite its success, Young had mixed feelings about the popularity he gained from the song.  Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor provided backing vocals on this track.  The lyrics talk about a man who may be overthinking life, searching for something just beyond his grasp.Old ManThe origin of this song was an encounter that Neil Young had with the caretaker of the Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased in 1970.  The old caretaker was not pleased with the young (literally) hippie-looking Young purchasing the place, and this song's lyrics talk about how the two of them were not that different.AlabamaA continuation of a diatribe from Young's “Southern Man,” this track condemns the racism of the white people in Alabama specifically, and the southern United States in general.  Neil Young would eventually come to see the lyrics as too accusatory, and too easy to misconstrue as a general condemnation of all Southerners. The Needle and the Damage DoneThe inspiration for this song was a number of musicians whom Young had observed as they fell apart due to heroin addiction.  More specifically, Young wrote this song about bandmate Danny Whitten, whom Young had to let go from his tour due to his heroin use. Whitten would die of an overdose shortly thereafter.ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Cabaret by Liza Minnelli (from the motion picture “Cabaret”)Minnelli stars in this period musical drama based on the Broadway show, set in Germany before World War II. STAFF PICKS:Mother and Child Reunion by Paul SimonRob leads off the staff picks with a one of the earlier rock songs with reggae influences.  The song was written in response to a Jimmy Cliff song in which a mother receives a letter that her son had been killed in battle in Vietnam.  It was also inspired by Simon's loss of his dog.  The title was inspired by a menu item in a Chinese restaurant in New York - chicken and eggs - entitled “Mother and Child Reunion.”I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (In Perfect Harmony) by the New SeekersBruce brings us a hit song which originally appeared as a commercial jingle.  Coca-Cola produced an ad called “hilltop” featuring young people of various races coming together over a Coke.  The success prompted a rewrite of the jingle into a full-length song, dropping the product references.  It became a big hit for both the New Seekers who recorded the radio jingle, and the Hillside Singers who recorded the television commercial.Let's Stay Together by Al GreenLynch features the song which hit the top of the US singles charts, and was named number one R&B song on the Billboard Year-end chart for 1972.  It has been covered by a number of artists, with Tina Turner being the most prominent.  It was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Do You Know What I Mean by Lee MichaelsWayne's closes out the staff picks with a song about a girl that a guy lost to his best friend after taking her for granted.  It reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Lee Michaels came out of the San Francisco music scene, originally as a surf band before moving into a more "blue eyed soul" direction.  Van Halen opened for Lee Michaels at the Whiskey a Go Go in 1977. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Joy (feat. Tom Parker) by Apollo 100This jazz instrumental covers the baroque chorale "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by J.S. Bach.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Viva Pod Vegas: The Elvis Presley Film Podcast

Viva Pod Vegas returns with Stay Away, Joe, which is the lowest-rated movie of Elvis's career. Is it as bad as we were led to believe? Yes… and no! After Mike sifts through shoddy taglines to try to find one he approves of, we debate whether watching these movies more quickly would help or hurt us. Mike works his way through a theory about Burgess Meredith as the Penguin and Col. Tom Parker. Speaking of, what would this movie have looked like if Col. Tom Parker was involved? We ask: why isn't there more plot? Also: why is THIS the plot? Joey notes that this feels like a video game — and Mike points out that maybe that's not a bad thing. We talk about why Elvis hates the song “Dominick” (but loves dogs) and whether or not he's running a bull-riding grift at the end of this movie. We break down the Stay Away, Joe wedding that Elvis doesn't want… and then a brawl to end the movie (with sound effects that no one wants!). We set a new record in our end-of-show games and we look ahead to Speedway.
