Turkish military forces are carrying out an air assault on US-backed Kurdish forces in Syria, and Ankara has warned that a land operation may follow. The crackdown comes amid reports that Washington may pull its forces out of Syria and Iraq. Turkey's government accuses Kurdish forces in north-eastern Syria of being linked to attacks on its army. Turkish drone strikes are bombarding oil refineries and electricity production in the Syrian border region controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of ethnic militias and rebel groups."The targets are energy infrastructure and that sort of stuff. Obviously, the goal is to make that area not sustainable, as a sustainable haven for the SDF," says Aydin Selcen, a former senior Turkish diplomat and now regional analyst for the Medyascope news portal. The SDF's ranks include the Kurdish People's Defence Units (YPG) and Women's Protection Units (YPJ), which Ankara accuses of being affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. The armed movement is considered a terrorist organisation by both Ankara and Washington."The end game as defined by the Turkish authorities is to prevent a terrorist statelet [being created] beyond Turkish borders," explains Selcen."This means allowing the PKK or its Syrian affiliates, the YPG and YPJ, to establish a local administration in that area. War on terror is perhaps the number one priority for this government." Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last month threatened a new land invasion into Syria.Turkish forces already control a large swathe of Syrian territory from previous operations against Syrian Kurdish forces.Possible US withdrawalThe SDF is backed by a US military force of around 900 soldiers in the war against the so-called Islamic State group, raising the possibility of a conflict between NATO and its allies.Ankara's ongoing assault comes amid reports that Washington is considering pulling its forces out of Syria and Iraq."Washington may be preparing to hand off SDF as a partner to the Syrian regime and saying: 'you guys sort yourselves out, we are actually going to leave'," said Turkey analyst Sinan Ciddi of the US-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies."The administration is apparently toying with the idea that it's no longer worth keeping US troops there because they are in harm's way," he said.At least some in the US administration want to explore, if they pulled their troops from northern Syria, "the extent to which Turkey could sort out its problems with the Kurds via engaging with the Syrian regime", Ciddi added.US-Turkey resetA US withdrawal from Syria would relieve years of tension between NATO allies Turkey and the United States."Unfortunately, this relationship with the United States and YPG creates a barrier between Turkey and the United States," said Bilgehan Alagoz, a professor of international relations at Istanbul's Marmara University. "A NATO ally should not act against other allies' national concerns," she said. "That's the main reason why Turkey perceives US policy in Syria as a national security concern." Sweden deal unlikely to resolve bitter dispute between NATO and TurkeyWith Ankara last month lifting its veto on Sweden's NATO membership and the White House reciprocating by green-lighting the sale of military jets to Turkey, the NATO allies appear to be seeking to reset ties. Analyst Selcen warns time may be running out for the SDF."If the Americans leave, it will be very difficult for the SDF to survive unless they cut a deal with Damascus," Selcen said. "But the timing is of the essence, of course – they cannot get the same terms that they will get once the Americans leave."Damascus compromiseBut Selcen suggests if the SDF moves quickly, it could secure a deal with Damascus that ensures its survival – at least in the short term, given the weakness of the Syrian security forces."At the end of the day, they will have to come up with some kind of modus vivendi with [Syrian President Bashar Al] Assad. It does not mean that Assad will come to control this region again as he did. But they will have to come up with some sort of a solution with Damascus."There could equally be advantages for the Turkish government, he believes. Turkey lays the ground for a smoothing of relations with Syria"It will also be, in the end, a kind of a safe face-saving formula for Ankara, which can now take Damascus as the main interlocutor to deal with this [Kurdish problem]," Selcen said."All these sides will be very happy to see the American presence leave the region – with the exception of, of course, the Iraqi Kurds and the Syrian Kurds."Opposition to the US military presence in Syria is rare common ground between Ankara and Damascus. If Damascus was to retake control of the predominantly Kurdish region, analysts say, it could be enough for Erdogan to claim victory over the SDF, end Turkey's assault, and remove the main point of tension between Ankara and Washington.
With her incredible new book, THE FURIES: Women, Vengeance, & Justice (Harper), journalist Elizabeth Flock explores the lives of three women who responded to violence with violence, and how they run up against the social institutions that seem designed to grind them down. We get into how the book grew from her interest in female vigilantes and her own experience of sexual violence, how she wound up reporting on the YPJ all-women army in Syria (but didn't tell her mom until a few days before flying out there), how we try to reconcile revenge and a just world, and how cultures of honor wreak havoc on women and men. We talk about how she balanced reporting with the near-mythic characters of some of her subjects, what she's learned over 15+ years in journalism (including how not to re-traumatize her subjects as they tell her their stories), the mind-body connection & how wrecked her body got by the time she finished writing this book, and how she went into this book starry-eyed and came away with a muddied picture. And we discuss how flexible podcasts are for journalistic storytelling, how women and men have responded to The Furies, what it was like reporting during the pandemic, guns & gun culture (& my embarrassing gun story), that time her dad took her to a murder scene when she was a kid (tbf, he was a journalist), having her first child a few months ago, whether things are getting a little better for women, and a lot more.
When you were 16 years old, what was your biggest fear? Not passing your drivers test, not having a date for the school dance, or maybe it was just getting through that damn chemistry class. Well, what if you were born in Syria, and at 16 yrs old, your daily routine was war, and your biggest fear was watching your friends die. And what if your reality was so dire, that you would choose to end your own life, rather than be captured and forced to experience a death most people cannot comprehend, at the hands of an evil most people can't even imagine. This is the life of the YPJ, the Women's Protection Units of Syria and their fight against ISIS. On today's episode I welcome back Ret. AF CCT MSgt Eric Ballester, who served with a team of US Army Delta Force operators as advisors to the YPJ and witnessed first hand the dedication, sacrifice, and ferocity that is manifested when a group of young Syrian girls fight for their home. Recommend you buckle up for this one.

Journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon is on a mission to tell the story of the Kurdish women who fought to protect their communities from ISIS. And then, the Pope’s historic trip to Iraq–a conversation with reporter Colm Flynn.
Since 2014, the civil war in Syria has involved an incredibly diverse and complex array of actors representing all manner of ideology and sectarian identity. But one group has captured the public imagination more than perhaps any other: the all-female Women's Protective Units, or YPJ, that have played a central role in the fight against the Islamic State and are continuing to fight for political communities, premised, in part, on gender equality. In her new book, "The Daughters of Kobani," journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon details the journey of several of the young Kurdish women involved in the YPJ and the role they have played thus far in the broader Syrian civil war. Scott R. Anderson sat down with her to talk about the origins of the YPJ, how they have weathered the end of the counter Islamic State campaign and what role they may play in a future Syria.
Book Clubbed tackles The Daughters of Kobani, a nonfiction account of the YPJ, the Kurdish, female battalion of soldiers fighting against ISIS. We review why some movies are better than books and what Millennial men really crave.

On January 15, in Tallahassee, FL, the FBI arrested Daniel Baker, a local leftist, veteran, and a former combat medic with the YPG, on trumped-up charges meant to silence dissent and criminalize community armed defense. FBI agents bullrushed Dan's apartment, guns drawn, broken open the front door, and threw a flash bang grenade before making the arrest. Dan, who has been described by various news outlets as being involved in some insidious "Florida Cspitol plot" and having connections with a "Marxist guerilla organization" has been charged by the federal government, denied bail on the grounds that he's a flight risk, and held in solitary confinement in a segretated housing unit because authorities fear he will "radicalize" other prisoners. Allegations surrounding Dan's arrest stem from flimsy, circumstantial evidence, derived almost entirely from social media posts Dan allegedly made, some fliers Dan allegedly printed off and distributed in the community calling for folks to arm themselves against a possible white supremacist coup, and a few pithy memes he allegedly reposted on the internet. Should Dan be convicted, he could face up to 5 years in prison and over $250,000 in fines. But who is Dan Baker, really? Today, we set the record straight. In this edition of Coffee with Comrades, I am joined by Eric, Dan's friend and former roommate, and our mutual comrade, Jack, to discuss the allegations, the anti-repression work surrounding Dan's case, the DeSantis administration's anti-protest bill, and a whole lot more. I want to preface by saying I think this is an immensely vital case of vindictive, opportunistic repression against the left, the opening salvo of the repression that is sure to come from Biden's neoliberal administration which has made no pretense of being friendly with the left. But this moment can prove instructive to folks interested in doing the hard work of defending their communities from the horrors of white supremacist and fascist violence by understanding how the state will crackdown on those of us who choose to stand up for our neighbors and take proactive measures to ensure our communities can continue to survive in spite of the crises engendered by capitalism and the state.

Faye and Austin collect eyewitness accounts of the revolution in Rojava — the remote corner of northeastern Syria where Kurds and other peoples organized to defend themselves from ISIS, and constructed an experimental new society in the midst of the Syrian Civil War. Based on the political theory of Abdullah Ocalan, synthesizing socialism, feminism, and the writings of American anarchist Murray Bookchin, northeast Syria's Democratic Confederalist system has been an inspiration to socialists and anarchists the world over. Today the Rojavan Revolution is in a dire and uncertain position, betrayed by the Trump administration, caught between a genocidal invasion by Turkey from the north, and the authoritarian Syrian state to the south. To document what has transpired in the region, we've interviewed journalist Robert Evans who visited Rojava in August 2019, as well as Josh and Charlie, two members of the International Brigades of the Syrian Democratic Forces, who fought in the liberation of Raqqa from ISIS in 2016-2017. We hope that their first-hand perspectives can help shed light on the situation in the region, and inspire western socialists and anarchists to learn from Rojava and apply lessons from their revolution to their own activism and organizing.Guests:Robert EvansTwitter: @IwriteOKBehind the Bastards: https://www.behindthebastards.com/It Could Happen Here: https://www.itcouldhappenherepod.com/Worst Year Ever: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-worst-year-ever-49377032/Charlie & JoshTwitter: @SabCharlieSocialist Rifle AssociationWebsite: https://socialistra.org/Twitter: @SocialistRAInstagram: @SocialistRAFacebook: @SocialistRifleFaye's Twitter: @FayeEcklar
About Women Defend Rojava, in their own words from their homepage:“We, the women of Kongra Star, began the campaign Women Defend Rojava to co-ordinate international resistance in solidarity with the women of Northern and Eastern Syria and the Rojava revolution against the occupation war of the Turkish state. For over a year, the Turkish army has illegally occupied the city and region of Afrin. This has particularly impacted the women of the region, with rape, kidnapping and gendered violence systematically used as weapons. The Turkish army and the jihadist militias they fund and support work together in these aims, and have forcibly imposed Sharia law on women of all different beliefs. The Turkish state is now threatening to make a direct invasion along the whole of the border with Syria that is currently self governed by the peole of the region under the Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria. This region, commonly known as Rojava, was liberated by the revolutionary forces from Daesh fascists, bringing peace and freedom. Erdogan and his government have made their intentions plain: to wipe out the revolution. The Rojava revolution is a revolution of all women of the world. Kurdish, Arabic, Assyrian, Ezidi, and other women of the region have inspired and given hope to thousands of women globally who are fighting for and imagining a better world. The revolution positions anti-patriarchal struggle as the most important battle, and thousands of people have been able to connect the revolution with common struggles in their own surroundings. Many women from all over the world have from the beginning participated in the revolution, some travelling to Rojava to join the struggle on the ground. The fighters of the women’s defence forces YPJ took a central role in the military defeat of Daesh, and more widely the women of the Rojava revolution have devoted their whole lives to their freedom and the freedom of their communities. This is also the freedom of all women and all men who want to create a better world, based on true gender liberation, ecological principles, and socialist values. Our freedoms are linked because of what the revolution represents, because of principles of internationalism, and because of the international links that have already been built up.This means that when the Turkish state attacks Rojava, it attacks us all. Women Defend Rojava aims to connect women who stand up, stand together, and speak out against the Turkish attacks. We publish voices of women’s resistance from Rojava, and messages of solidarity from around the world. Only the force of organised women can defend Rojava, and we will show that the women of the region are not alone. With your voices our voice will get stronger. We co ordinate solidarity actions so we can have a united international presence. We call on groups and individuals to take action and share the results with us. We will spread the word of marches, demonstrations, occupations, statements and letters, messages of solidarity and any steps taken in the fight against occupation and fascism. In all our different colours but together in our aims, we will stop the Turkish state’s war on women, democracy, and freedom. We will unite, resist and defend!Jin Jiyan Azadî!”Homepage and social media:www.womendefendrojava.netTwitter: @starrcongressFacebook: Kongra Star DiplomacyInstagram: @WomenDefendContact:womendefendrojava@protonmail.com

The Justice Warriors interview Hannah Bohman, a soldier from the all womens army known as the YPJ, about her experience hunting Isis.

This episode we, and special guest voice Producer Cath, make ourselves feel bad by forcing fights onto two impressive as hell groups of women: The Night Witches vs. The YPJ. Sure, we're horrible monsters but at least we haven't tried to buy Greenland while being racist! Contact: wemakethingsfight@gmail.com
This week, Mel & Pearson sit down with Aaron Ellis from the Center for Participant Education to talk about community skill-sharing and radical pedagogy. But, first, some current events: The Russiagate conspiracy turned out to be complete hogwash, surprising no one with at least two brain cells to spark together. Protesters in Gaza marked the one year anniversary of the Great March of Return. Christian fundamentalists are pouring millions of dollars into far-right groups in Europe. The YPJ and YPG celebrate driving ISIS out of Afrin and mourn for the fallen. But the social ecologist feminist project of Rojava has only just begun. We spend the hour speaking with Aaron about anti-hierarchical classrooms, emancipatory pedagogy, (re)imagining the ways we teach and learn, building radical spaces for sharing tools, tactics, and strategies, and holding space in the academy for everyone in the community to learn.

In the last 4th episode of Vedenga Rojava we had a close look on internationalism and its history. We shared some of the actions which were carried after the appeal coming from Rojava. Small interview with Barbara a long term international revolutionary about actions, strategy and future and with queeranarchists Rêvan and Anna who participated in Women for Afrîn in Stockholm, Sweden with prior experiences from YPJ about inter-sectionalism, real practical solidarity and revolutionary long term perspective. In Dîroka Şehîd - Memories of Fallen comrades, Serhildan presented a story of YPJ kurdish fighter Ş. Barîn Kobane and talked about systematical implication of patriarchy in the most disgrace way by Turkish state and its jihadist alies and the courage of women facing these brutal attacks. We summarized some of the criticisms we received and included even more music than usually (sometimes sang along) and in the end we prepared a little surprise for you. As always we welcome your feedback on vedengarojava (A) riseup (dot) net

This episode features an interview with Spanish filmmaker and documentarian Alba Sotorra. Alba's latest film, Commander Arian, follows the title character and her journey alongside the Women's Protection Unit in Syria (the YPJ)—an all-female militia fighting to liberate the city of Kobane from ISIS. Alba chats with Mica about how these women are fighting for their right to exist, how they earn freedom on the frontlines, and why it's so important to solidarize with Syrian women. As Alba says, their fight is our fight, too.
Alba Sotorra and David Peck talk about her new film Commander Arian, liberation, gender disparity, equal rights, real democracy, implementing a feminist state and women, war and freedom. Synopsis Filmmaker Alba Sotorra embeds with this group of Kurdish resistance fighters gaining unprecedented access to the Commander and her troops, when Commander Arian is hit by 5 bullets, Sotorra helps nurse her back from the brink of death. On the front line of the Syrian war, 30-year-old Commander Arian guides a female battalion towards the city of Kobane to release its people from the grip of ISIS in Alba Sotorra's empowering tale of emancipation and freedom. When the war in Syria broke, a group of women from the Kurdish resistance assembled the YPJ—Women's Protection Unit. Arian, who witnessed at a young age the nefarious treatment of sexual assault victims, leads the unit and dedicates her life to battling ISIS. As the YPJ inches closer to their target, she implores her comrades to discover the true meaning of their fight: freedom for the next generation of women. With unquestioned access to the commander and her troops, including delicate scenes of her recovering from multiple bullet wounds, Sotorra brilliantly crafts an enthralling portrait of a woman on a mission. A song of the Partisans who fought fascism in Italy. As they recruited people to fight against the despotism of Mussolini, they would sing this hymn to rally the people. This song emphasises the universal human longing for freedom and equality. Today, the torch is carried by those who wish to overthrow the oligarchy and its evils. Dedicated to the brave warriors of the YPG and YPJ in Rojava, who are fighting fascism in the form of DAESH, to all anti-fascists wherever they fight, and to Stjepan Filipović, martyred by the Croatian Ustaše, whose immortal last words ring out through history: 'Death to fascism! Freedom to the people!' • English lyrics: It is one morning that I awakened— oh bella ciao! bella ciao! bella ciao! ciao! ciao! It is one morning that I awakened and I found the invader. Oh my dear partisan, take me far— oh bella ciao! bella ciao! bella ciao! ciao! ciao! Oh my dear partisan, take me far, for I know that death has me. And if I die as a partisan— oh bella ciao! bella ciao! bella ciao! ciao! ciao! And if I die as a partisan, I want you to bury me. So bury me upon the mountain— oh bella ciao! bella ciao! bella ciao! ciao! ciao! So bury me upon the mountain under the flower of beauty. And all the people who pass my grave— oh bella ciao! bella ciao! bella ciao! ciao! ciao! And all the people who pass my grave will tell me, 'What a lovely sight!' 'This is the flower that guards the fighter— (oh bella ciao! bella ciao! bella ciao! ciao! ciao!) This is the flower that guards the fighter who died for all our liberty!' 'Oh yes, the flower that guards the fighter— who died for all our liberty!' • Credits: • Evangeline Sutherland ——vocals, production, guitar, translation • Anonymous ——lyrics, composition

In this episode of Radical People Eamon talks with Hanna, who served two tours as an international volunteer in Rojava with the all woman fighting force, the YPJ. Hanna is featured in the film "Fear Us Women" viewable here: https://fearuswomen.com/ This is an article about how Turkish forces seized the Kurdish region of Afrin: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/18/world/middleeast/afrin-turkey-syria.html
Interview with a member of the Youth Movement of Rojava This week, Bursts spoke with Şoreş Ronahi of the Youth Movement of Rojava (Yekîtiya Ciwanên Rojava), an autonomous movement within Tev-Dem, the movement for Democratic Confederalism in Rojava (located within Northern Syria). Mr Ronahi speaks about the Turkish assaults, aided by ISIS/DAESH forces now flying the so-called Free Syrian Army flag, to attack defense forces and civilians in the Efrînê Canton (also spelled Afrin or Efrin elsewhere). We talk about the political stance of the Turkish government as relates to Kurdish people within and without the borders of Turkey, with the Social Revolution in Rojava, the shifting U.S. relationship to the YPG & YPJ militias under the control of the PYD administration in Rojava, the Revolution's approaches to engaging and fighting patriarchy and ethnic hatred in Syria and the region and more. As a side note, although Rojava is not an explicitly anarchist project, it is an anti-nationalist, anti-state movement that holds as its pillars ecology, anti-capitalism & feminism and is in part inspired by American former Anarchist turned Communalist, Murray Bookchin. Beyond Bookchin's impact, Bursts personally feels that Rojava adds an IRL experiment in combat and revolutionary organizing that many anarchists have engaged in in the form of the International Revolutionary People's Guerrilla Forces, The Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army, within other elements of the International Freedom Batallions as well as in the PYD administered YPG & YPJ militias on the front lines fighting DAESH. The YPJ soldier that Şoreş mentioned at the end is Avesta Xabûr. For past episodes on #Rojava on this show, check out our conversations with Kurdish feminist Dilar Dirik (pt 1 & pt 2), our conversation with American anarchist Guy McGowan Steel Steward fighting with the YPG (pt 1 & pt 2) and our discussions with anarchist and writer, Paul Z. Simons after his study and visit to Rojava (pt 1, pt 2 & pt 3) The track finish with is Euphonik with the song Y.P.J. from their album, Inconnu Mais Reconnu II. Playlist

anarchy (1)......... jesus CW: Bodyshame, violence Notes 11/20: -I usually interview activists, but this week I spoke to my co-worker who was not politically active. Listening to it now a few years later, there's definitely some problematic things in here, but I decided it still has value to sort of show us struggling to learn. Adam returns to the show to discuss the upcoming offensive in Raqqa, Chemical Weapons in Syria and Bashar Al-Assad. Also, I chastise the left for developing a poor analysis of Syria based on our own projections, and proceed to do the very thing I criticize. Also, dick jokes.

Welcome to Tick Talk, formerly known as Talk Time! Tick Talk is CiTR's weekly spoken word check-in. This week, we have excerpts from a lecture about women who fight in the guerilla militia's of Kurdistan, as well as a poetry reading by a CiTR volunteer. David Usher has been a volunteer with CiTR for over one year. He is one of our most senior volunteers, and wants to share stories from his life through his passion for poetry. His experience is rich and varied, exploring themes of familial love, self-exploration, patriarchy, and pain. He writes and selects the poems he would like to share, and then we record them together and I edit them for air. The poems we heard today were: My Friend David - By Toni McGregor Tyra at two, already an artist Thirteen, a birthday poem for Ella Eric Two Hours Domineer On Sunday September 13th, Simon Fraser University’s Institute for the Humanities hosted A panel discussion about the power of female fighters in Kurdistan from both the Canadian and Kurdish perspective. Female fighters in Kurdistan are called the YPJ, which is a branch of the leftist People’s Protection Unit militia. This group is quite controversial, but they have been one of the most effective units actively fighting ISIS on the ground in the MIddle East for the last few years. The presentation centered around the story of the Kurdish people, and a photo and video presentation done by Hanna Böhman, a Vancouverite who volunteered and fought for the YPJ militia this year. In this piece, you will hear excerpts from the panel discussion. Hanna Bohman and Nissy Koye, a Kurdish activist, discuss Hanna’s experiences in Rojava, and the way women are treated in the militia. Following this is a short interview by Eleanor Wearing with Nissy Koye.
