One of the biggest problems we face today is the screen epidemic. It seems like people in our lives are constantly on screens whether they be tablets, phones, or laptops, there seems to be no escape. Have you ever asked yourself why you simply cannot stop checking your phone throughout the course of the day? Well the answer is not a simple one, but it starts with the tech giants engineering teams. You see every companies job is to make money, and for social media companies this comes through new users, and time spent on the app. In order to get you to stay on their platform longer software engineers are manipulating your brain chemistry to keep you coming back for Dopamine hit after Dopamine hit. Social media addiction, like other addictions happens because of our brains reward center. Whenever you check your notifications, or get a like on one of your posts Dopamine the pleasure chemical is released and it tells your brain that every time you check your phone you get rewarded. The word "Trigger" has been in the media a lot lately. Especially when talking about "Trigger Warnings" on TV shows, YouTube and other forms of media. We thought it would be helpful to dive into why we as humans get triggered, so that we can understand why people react the way they do. A trigger is basically a reaction caused by a reminder of someone's past trauma. When you "trigger" someone this means that something you said or did reminded their brain of a traumatic event in their life, no matter how big or small the event was. In this episode of The Mind Melt Podcast I talk about how our world has created a generation of chronically stressed people. It seems like we are always feeling some feelings of stress or anxiety, and that the problems in the world, and in our lives keep piling up. One of the major causes of a lot of stress and anxiety is burnout at our jobs. Since the Pandemic it has been a challenge for all of us to find a work life balance, and to create the best schedules for our mental health. Many of us feel drained, or ready to give up or give into our bad habits caused by stress. Maybe you tend to over eat or binge watch your favorite show when you get stressed, but the truth is these unhealthy coping mechanisms just lead to more stress down the line. Instead if we can focus on doing things in our free time that give us energy and make us feel fulfilled we will be better off. Whether this be spending time with your kids, playing an instrument, working on a business or a passion, or doing self work. In the next episode we will talk about how to deal with stress and eliminate some of the triggers in our lives that are causing the most stress. How to Get Out of Toxic Relationships

In this episode I talk about how toxic and negative relationships impact our life. When we have toxic people in our life they often don't want to support our goals, aspirations, and dreams. They want to keep us right where we are because it feels safer to them. With people who don't support us or our way of life it can be difficult to create and serve others at a high level. When we constantly feel drained of our energy, or have to pretend to be someone we are not it can be difficult to change much of anything. There is a famous quote that says "Show me your three closest friends and I'll show you your future". I think this quote is so true beause we as humans are easily influenced by the people we surround ourselves with. When we surround ourselves with motivated and driven people working towards goals, we will become a better person in the process. This is why for our own personal growth and development we must let go of our toxic relationships, heal from the trauma they caused us, and focus on nurturing and developing healthy relationships that move us forward in life. One of the biggest parts of our lives is our relationships and the people we surround ourselves with. If you want to live the best possible life you can, why would you not want to build the best relationships you can. Many people complain about how they don't like their relationships and how they want to improve them. What they don't realize is in order to build the best possible relationships they can this must be a top priority in their life. The truth is it takes a lot of time and effort to strengthen a relationship and it isn't always a linear path. Like everything else in life there are ups and downs, but if you keep on showing up consistently for the people in your life these relationships are bound to get better. In order to build better relationships it comes down to a couple of simple but difficult things. The first is you have to realize the negative patterns of your relationship. What do I do and what do they do that is painful or hurting us. Once you can determine your patterns through consistent effort you can overcome them. Next you want to focus on being a good listener and truly hearing the other person. We often do selective listening where we listen in order to form our next point in our own head. Another key to developing better relationships is the ability to open up about your feelings and get vulnerable. If you can do this your relationship will become more open and honest, exactly what you want.

Welcome back to the Mind Melt Podcast. Today is our first episode of 2022 and we thought it was appropriate to start our series on developing good habits. We wanted to start out this series by talking about the psychology and mindset that creates our habits in the first place. Our habits are formed by repeating patterns called habit loops which always end in some sort of reward. A habit loop consists of 3 things a cue/trigger, the routine (actual habit), and the reward that follows. What keeps us going back to that Netflix show, those bad foods, smoking, drinking alcohol and many other bad habits is the reward. The reward is what our brain remembers so even if the behavior is not in our best interest our brain believes it is good for us. On the next episodes we will cover how to break yourself out of the habit loop and break some of your bad habits early on in this new year. We will also teach you the importance of good habits and the benefits they provide for your life. As 2021 comes to an end this is a time for us all to reflect on the year behind us and plan for the year ahead of us. If you are someone who wants to get better in your life, each year usually ends with a period of self reflection. Self reflection can be one of the most helpful processes for our growth if it is done in the right way. What I encourage all of us to stay away from is making judgements about ourselves and others for the lives we are leading. Instead we should make observations about our habits, mindsets, and life as a whole and work towards making small changes that can be sustained over time. The truth is there is no better way to fill our heads with negative thoughts, and lowering our self esteem than judging ourselves. Maybe we acted in a way we did not like but this doesn't mean we need to come from a place of judgement. Instead come from a place of love and self compassion where we address the root causes behind why act the ways we do, and work on healing yourself and letting go of the things we are holding onto. Overall lets make 2022 the best year yet by reflecting on 2021, creating a plan and vision for our life, and setting ourselves up for success by developing healthy and beneficial habits. Nowadays Judgement is all around us whether it be about family members, co workers, social media, or mainstream media. Making judgements about the world around us and other people has almost become the new normal. This toxic culture of judgement has created a lot of divide between groups with different ideas and beliefs. This culture has only made us further apart and has created even more hatred. In order to return to a more accepting and understanding society it first begins with the individual. When we start to realize that we judge others because of our own opinions about ourselves, or personal insecurities we take the first step to over coming judgement. Next comes a four step process that we should all use on a daily basis. The Process is called D.U.A.L or Don't pass Judgement, Understand others, Accept others, and finally love other people. With this process we will be more open to our diversity and differences as people and we will be less judgmental. At the end of each year we often judge ourselves when reflecting on the previous year whether it be about out financial, health, relationship or really any other goals we set the previous year. We also judge other people at the end of the year for how they may have treated us, and their personal development. As we reflect on the year we just had and start to come up with new dreams and ideas for the future let's drop the judgements, let's drop that little story we tell ourselves in our head and lets get straight to the facts no matter how brutally honest they may be. End this year with love and compassion for yourself and other people, and make it your 2022 New Year's Resolution to get better at one thing each and every day.

This is part one of my podcast with Ezzell Floranina all about giving disabled people an opportunity to heal and grow from the past through Theatre. We are all born with gifts, but we often lose sight of this especially when talking about people with special abilities or "disabilities". In this episode of The Mind Melt Podcast my guest Ezzell Floranina and I talk about giving people who are often overlooked a chance through theatre, and how it can help build self confidence. We go into a form of theatre called Theatre of the oppressed that is all about reliving traumatic experiences, and seeing the situation from a new perspective and point of view. Ezzell gives us a history lesson on the formation of the disabilities stigma, and tells many heartbreaking stories of abuse and mistreatment in mental institutions across the country, particularly at The Belchertown State School. We hope that this podcast can open your mind to the hardships people labeled as disabled have endured, and inspires you to act differently in the future. The truth is we could all use someone to stand up for us, a friend when times get tough, and someone who understands and accepts us for who we are. When you leave the house today carry the message of kindness and acceptance wherever you go, and don't miss another opportunity to stand up for someone or something you believe in.
