What is your superpower? This is the question Gabi Angelini often asks when speaking to audiences. After Gabi faced repeated job rejections, she and her mom, Mary channeled their frustration into purpose, by launching their own business, Gabi's, Powered by Special Abilities. Their venture employs people with unique strengths and celebrates their talents, proving that everyone has a superpower waiting to be unleashed. Through their work, they've created a supportive environment where employees can showcase their capabilities, gain valuable work experience, and develop greater independence. This heartfelt story highlights the incredible bond between a mother and daughter and is a powerful testament to how embracing diverse abilities can lead to both business success and personal empowerment.   Bios:   Gabi Angelini   Advocate Extraordinaire: Empowering Inclusion, Entrepreneurship, and Equality"   Gabi is the co-founder of Gabi's, Powered by Special Abilities, a nonprofit that provides workforce training, education, and other support programs to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to help them secure employment, contribute to society, and live a purposeful, rewarding life.  She is a champion for the Special Abilities workforce and the impact that diversity and inclusion has on the world. After high school graduation, Gabi searched and applied for many positions but no employer would hire her. Not one. Gabi came to learn that 82% of individuals with special needs are unemployed.  Gabi and her mom knew this needed to change.    As a result of this personal experience, together with her mom, Mary Angelini, Gabi co-founded her nonprofit, Gabi's Powered by Special Abilities to help create opportunities for people with Special Abilities. She wanted to help them join the workforce and live a fulfilling and purposeful life.    Today, Gabi's employs 40+ people with Special Abilities and partners with more than 25 companies. Gabi's develops partnerships with logistics companies to fulfill orders through Gabi's PALS (packing, assembling, labeling and shipping). Also, the nonprofit maintains an e-commerce and packaged coffee and products division that features a range of coffee flavors and related products through Gabi's Grounds.    Moreover, Gabi Angelini is an award-winning entrepreneur and has received the following awards and recognitions:   2024:  “Community Champion”: Gabi's Pals, NC Down Syndrome Association   2023: “Women in Business Awards; “Entrepreneur of the Year,” Triangle Business Journal; and “Women Shaping Raleigh,” featured in Raleigh Magazine; NC Women in Business Hall of Fame  2022: “Employer of the Year,” Raleigh Mayor Maryann Baldwin's Committee for Persons with Disabilities  2021: “Founders Award,” Doing Good at Work 2019: “Self-Advocate of the Year,” NC Down Syndrome Association  Gabi maintains strong relationships with the community, her Gabi's PALS team of employees, and her corporate partner clients. She is also co-author of the children's book, “Gabi the Puppy.” In addition, Gabi serves as a champion for people with special abilities and speaks at conferences. Her favorite topic is the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workforce and helping everyone find their own superpower, like she did.   Mary Angelini Co-founder, Gabi's Powered by Special Abilities   Mary is co-founder of Gabi's Powered by Special Abilities, a nonprofit that provides workforce training, education, and other support programs to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to help them secure employment, contribute to society, and live a purposeful, rewarding life.  A personal experience led her to form Gabi's Powered by Special Abilities with her co-founder and daughter, Gabi. After high school graduation, Gabi was unable to secure employment. Literally no one would hire her. Not one person could see her special abilities, just her Down syndrome.   Mary and Gabi were determined to help shift the conversation from disabilities to special abilities, neuro-diversity, and the power of inclusion to help create employment opportunities for people in the IDD community.    What began in 2017 as a small coffee company (Gabi's Grounds) has now grown to include a full-scale packaging, assembling, labeling, and shipping company (Gabi's PALS), as a business solution for mid-to-large manufacturing and logistics companies. In addition, there is a drop-shipping solution for local, smaller companies.    Today, Gabi's Powered by Special Abilities is an award-winning nonprofit organization and has a team of more than 45 people with special abilities including blindness, autism, Down syndrome, and more. Gabi's Grounds continues to provide pop-up shops at local businesses and markets, and offers Gabi's Coffee Club, a subscription membership to businesses and coffee lovers everywhere.    Mary is dedicated to the empowerment of the special abilities community and to help educate the world about the power of diversity and inclusion. She travels with Gabi to speak at corporate events and conferences and help inspire people to see the superpowers in all of us.    Prior to founding Gabi's with her daughter, Mary held positions with IBM and Our Lady of Lourdes church. She enjoys kickboxing and spending time with her husband, six children and their families.

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 199 Navigating as a Rare Mom - Expert Insights into Special Needs Financial Planning with Mary McDirmid from Special Abilities Network Mary McDirmid is a rare mom and Chief Inclusion Officer at Special Abilities Network. She has a passion for advocating for families like ours— families with children who have disabilities and rare diseases. She's here to talk us through the uncomfortable topic of financial and future planning for our rare families.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS How do parents approach planning for their children's future when things feel so uncertain? If you don't have the capacity to think about it, the first thing to do is to figure out what you can do to create space and capacity. Triage anything that's causing a lot of stress so you can move from caregiver mode to parent mode.  What's the importance of planning when you have a child with disabilities or rare disease? The importance is that if a child is on any type of state or federal benefit, we want to ensure they keep those benefits. When they turn 18, they're legally an adult and they can only have a certain amount of assets in their name. There's only a couple places we can put money to help them save and not have funds count against their asset limits. It's important to also be able to supplement financial care when you're no longer around. The importance is keeping your child benefit-eligible and to ensure your child is cared for.  What is your advice for parents who don't have the financial resources to save for their child's future? Apply for state benefits and leverage those resources to find funds. Think about other resources such as family members who can contribute. Examine how your family is spending money  and reflect on your personal spending habits to see if there's somewhere to save.   How can families advocate for change around policy and providing better care for our kids? If you're up for the fight, you have the time, and you have the capacity, think about what you want to achieve, be clear in your ask and be prepared to follow up. If you're considering taking something on, ask yourself if the project benefits from your special skill or expertise, if it serves the community you represent, and what / who you want to be held accountable to.  LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED Dante Labs https://us.dantelabs.com/ Special Abilities Network https://specialabilitiesnetwork.com/ TSC Alliance https://www.tscalliance.org/ State Disability Resource Guides https://truenorthdisabilityplanning.com/idd-roadmaps TUNE INTO THE ONCE UPON A GENE PODCAST Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/5Htr9lt5vXGG3ac6enxLQ7 Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/once-upon-a-gene/id1485249347 Stitcher https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/once-upon-a-gene Overcast https://overcast.fm/itunes1485249347/once-upon-a-gene CONNECT WITH EFFIE PARKS Website https://effieparks.com/ Twitter https://twitter.com/OnceUponAGene Instagram https://www.instagram.com/onceuponagene.podcast/?hl=en Built Ford Tough Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/1877643259173346/ Interested in advertising on Once Upon a Gene? Last fall, a teacher in Minnesota applied for and won a grant for an accessible swing and merry-go-round. The grant fell $35,000 short of the amount the school needed, so she asked her combined fifth- and sixth-grade class to help raise the rest. What the students did was nothing short of remarkable. They raised over $300,000 in weeks and are nearly at $1 million today. While it's natural to celebrate that these kids fought for their unique abilities and friends to join them on the playground, society can highlight the push to get kids to overachieve. When that happens, there can be a natural challenge to kids whose physical abilities are inhibited from being seen or valued. Dr. Kathy speaks to how we can build value in our kids and how to truly celebrate kids, whether they support friends with special abilities or are the special abilities friends being supported.

The founders of SAN prefer the term “special abilities” rather than “special needs.” This is because their own experience with their own children has been that, although they do need more help than typically developing individuals would, their children do have many special abilities. They have unique ways of connecting with others and shining a bright light on the world. Brady Murray is the proud father of 7 children, 2 with Down syndrome: one born into his family, Nash, and the other adopted from China, Cooper. The Murray family loves all things special needs and strongly believes in second chances. This belief fuels their love for foster care, and the two youngest children in the family were adopted through foster care. In this episode, I talk to Kim Nuxhall who created the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League so that everyone with any challenge can play the game of baseball.  Kim is the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League.  He joins the podcast to tell the powerful story and mission behind his father's legacy projects.  Kim's dad,  Joe Nuxhall, was the youngest player to ever pitch in the MLB at the ripe age of 15.  After his professional baseball career, Joe joined Marty Brennaman in the radio broadcast booth for the Cincinnati Reds, forming a dynamic 31-year duo that has gone unmatched to this day.  Joe brought energy, honesty, and an unapologetic joy to the radio that the entire Cincinnati community embraced. After his passing in 2007, Kim continued to follow their hearts and vision by creating the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League in 2012.  The Miracle League aims to revolutionize and set the standard for creating recreational and athletic opportunities for people with disabilities.  With two rubber baseball fields, a unique putt putt course, and more, the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League aims to provide "every individual with every challenge every chance to play the game of baseball."   Kim is living out his dad's legacy and is one of the most compassionate people I know.  Listen to our conversation and see how the Miracle League is so much more than baseball.  Thanks for listening and sharing with a friend.  Hugs, LorriFollow:  https://bit.ly/ImDyingToTellYouInstagram

Devin: Gabi, what is your superpower.Gabi: Being a hugger.Devin: Mary, what’s your superpower?Mary: I’m good at going around and telling people our story. You know, getting the word out there that people with special abilities are worthy and good workers and awesome.Gabi’s Grounds and Gabi’s PALSGabi Angelini, the only girl in a home with five brothers, is different in another way. Her mom, Mary Angelini, says Gabi has special abilities. Over 80 percent of people like Gabi are unemployed. Gabi wanted to work. She also has an entrepreneurial spirit. When finding a job proved impossible, Gabi wanted to start a restaurant.Mary felt running a restaurant might be too big a challenge. After visiting a coffee shop that employed folks like Gabi, Mary suggested that as an alternative. Gabi said, “Let’s do it.”For several years, the pair began raising money, building a nonprofit coffee brand called Gabi’s Grounds, and holding pop-up coffee shops at events. Mary says, “We have a lot of merchandise, lots of shirts and stuff, and we do pop-ups. We’ll do hot coffee, we do...” “Iced coffee,” Gabi interjects. When prompted by her mom, she rattles off flavors, “caramel, vanilla, chocolate.”“Tiramisu and…” Mary adds before Gabi finishes with “Snickers.”Gabi’s Grounds often holds pop-ups at conferences where Gabi speaks. She’s nonchalant about public speaking. “I don’t mind it. It’s just fun.”Then covid. Gabi and Mary put plans for a coffee shop on hold.Another opportunity popped up. The company was offered a small warehouse space on a month-to-month basis where it could do its packaging and shipping. This move got them out of the family’s garage. It also created an opportunity for connecting with people in a new way.Quickly, Gabi and her friends found clients that wanted them to do similar packaging, assembly, labeling and shipping for businesses in their community in North Carolina. Gabi’s PALS, a new nonprofit, grew out of this opportunity.Mary reports on the nonprofit’s impact:“We're having a huge impact. One, we also pack at a warehouse that's about 30 minutes from here. We have 19 people working out there. [A client] said we've increased their productions by 60%. So we have a Raleigh location, we have a Creedmoor location. So our goal is to have many locations. Because I have people every single day emailing me, coming here, calling me, asking if their child can work with us because 82 percent of people of special abilities don't have a job. So we just want to employ as many people as possible.”Hiring people like Gabi can be a delicate matter. Mary says the process begins with a conventional job interview. Mary doesn’t just talk to loved ones. The next step is to have the candidate volunteer for an hour in the warehouse. Mary wants to see that they will enjoy the work, even though it is often difficult. “It’s dirty. Sometimes it’s hot. It’s not a posh environment.”Usually, the candidates are thrilled to have an opportunity to work. “And they work so hard to keep that opportunity because they know the alternative is just sitting at home and doing nothing,” Mary says.“We just need more clients, more work,” Mary says.“And more companies to work with,” Gabi adds.Mary and Gabi have superpowers that help them be effective in their work. Gabi is a hugger, and Mary is a storyteller. To support this vital work, subscribe. How to Develop Hugging As a SuperpowerHugging is, for Gabi, an on-the-field leadership tool. Mary describes for Gabi’s benefit and ours how that works, “You’re a good leader. You’re good. You turn the music on, you get people happy and laughing and dancing. You’re good. You’re inspirational.”Hugging is one aspect of building authentic relationships with teammates. While hugging is not appropriate in every workplace, you can achieve the impact it has on her work with other tactics. By showing optimism and positivity along with genuine moral support, you can learn from Gabi to make teamwork a superpower for good. How to Develop Storytelling As a SuperpowerMary says that telling their story is her superpower. She offers one central tenet for making this your superpower: “You’ve got to find your why.”That passion or reason for doing the difficult things you do is essential for motivating yourself. You’ve got to find yours, Mary says.To demonstrate, Mary recites what she describes as her why. “We do this so that we empower the people with special abilities so they can find fulfillment in everything they do.”If you can find your passion, you can make anything a superpower to enable you to do more good. What is Vampire Litrature? -------- Vampire literature covers the spectrum of literary work concerned principally with the subject of vampires. The literary vampire first appeared in 18th-century poetry, before becoming one of the stock figures of gothic fiction with the publication of Polidori's The Vampyre (1819), which was inspired by the life and legend of Lord Byron. Later influential works include the penny dreadful Varney the Vampire (1847); Sheridan Le Fanu's tale of a lesbian vampire, Carmilla (1872), and the masterpiece of the genre: Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). Some authors created a more "sympathetic vampire", with Varney being the first,[1] and Anne Rice's 1976 novel Interview with the Vampire as a more recent example.[2] --------- Taken from Wikipedia What is Undead? ------- The undead are beings in mythology, legend, or fiction that are deceased but behave as if they were alive. A common example of an undead being is a corpse reanimated by supernatural forces, by the application of either the deceased's own life force or that of another being (such as a demon). The undead may be incorporeal (ghosts) or corporeal (mummies, vampires and zombies). The undead are featured in the belief systems of most cultures, and appear in many works of fantasy and horror fiction. The term is also occasionally used for putative non-supernatural cases of re-animation, from early experiments like Robert E. Cornish's to future sciences such as chemical brain preservation and cryonics. Bram Stoker considered using the title, The Un-Dead, for his novel Dracula (1897), and use of the term in the novel is mostly responsible for the modern sense of the word. The word does appear in English before Stoker but with the more literal sense of "alive" or "not dead", for which citations can be found in the Oxford English Dictionary. In one passage of Dracula, Nosferatu is given as an "Eastern European" synonym for "un-dead".[1] Stoker's use of the term "undead" refers only to vampires; the extension to other types of supernatural beings arose later. Most commonly, it is now taken to refer to supernatural beings which had at one point been alive and continue to display some aspects of life after death, but the usage is highly variable. ------ Taken From Wikipedia Web novel? A web novel or webnovel is a novel published online. Web novels exist in both free-to-read and pay-to-read formats. Many free-to-read novels are indexed at sites such as Webfiction Guide or Muses Success. --------- Web serial? Most web novels are written as serials. Serialized novels have a long history, predating the internet by centuries. ------- Taken from Wikipedia This Video May Contain full audiobook,Character Growth,Monsters,Overpowered Protagonist,Resurrection,Special Abilities,Sword And Magic, web novels, audiobook, adventure, ongoing, light novel, horror, zombie, ghoul, grimdark, horror audiobook, creepy pasta, nightmare fuel, series, spooky, undead, reborn, thriller, vampire audiobook, scary audiobook, new audiobook, web novel audiobook, ghoul audiobook, litrpg,Horror Audiobook, zombie apocalypse , historical, vampires, mages, free audiobook , first 40k #Audiobook #Vampire #Narration

Shine.FM's Ministry Director Brian and his son Jake look this week at our role both as individuals and as a church in ministering to those with special abilities.  In Music Matters, they look at new music from Hillsong United, Phil Wickham and a 1984 oldie but goldie from Kenny Marks who passed away this week. In Culture Shock, Halloween happened this week and we as Christians didn't become satanists. How do we use Halloween as a teachable moment in the discipleship of our kids.

Jennifer and James have a very unique family, they have 10 children! 6 of them have been adopted and 4 or those adopted have disabilities.  They each have brought love and joy into their family.   Internationally Adopted Children with Special Needs The Unexpected Jennifer and James went to Kazakhstan to adopt their daughter.  They were unaware at the time that she has autism and other medical issues as a result of living in an orphanage.  Jennifer recalled “She ended up with Reye syndrome and came home with severe liver problems and cognitive disabilities..they did some testing and told me that she had severe autism” Both Jennifer and James were crushed by the diagnosis. However, she has exceeded expectations and is on the honor roll as a freshman in high school.  “As soon as I think we’re going to hit a ceiling, she breaks through it.” Jennifer added. Adding More After struggling with miscarriages for a few years Jennifer knew it was time to adopt and add another to their family.  Some countries have restrictions on allowing typically developing children to be adopted if there are other children in the home.  This led Jennifer and James to start adopting more children with disabilities. The moment Jennifer saw Jacob, she knew he was supposed to be in their family.  “I recognized him, I knew it was him and he had Trisomy 21, Down syndrome.” Jennifer said. Children with Special Needs have Special Abilities to Love James says children with disabilities have a unique gift to love. The amount of happiness felt not only by his wife and him, but also their other kids, has dramatically increased since they’ve adopted children with disabilities. “The light and joy that they bring us is immense,” James said, “and this is true with each one of our children. They have their own unique traits and their own unique abilities. But with those things that the world would call special needs, they come as a total package, and with those special needs have come special abilities, and that’s not just lip service. Truly special abilities that have blessed our lives more than I can begin to say.” Jennifer said, these children with special needs know what’s most important in life and really understand happiness. They naturally have many talents and capabilities that do not come so easily to others. This family knows to truly love, care for, and raise children with special abilities means to be blessed to be in the presence of angels. The Impact of Having Children with Special Needs Jennifer and James both agree that their children who have special needs have had a profound impact their immediate family as well as their extended family.  Jennifer said “they all have a very special connection with all of our children, but particularly the ones with Down syndrome..my brother was the one who said to me..‘I think that their chromosome (the extra one) is the love chromosome.’  “It’s been fun to see that they’ve not only impacted up in our immediate family but in our extended family and our community.” added Jennifer Questions when Adopting Children with Special Needs Parents who want to adopt but aren’t sure, James encourages them to look deeper. Of course the cost of adoption is high—especially from a foreign country—is expensive, but adopting a child is infinitely more valuable than any material possession anyone would spend the same amount of money on. Jennifer says she knows every child has a forever family whether it’s their own or an adoptive family.
