“We couldn't start inkjet again if we had it in our hands because we're not meeting the rules.” That stark admission from former HP Fellow Will Allen reveals why even the most innovative companies struggle to recreate their own breakthroughs—and what it takes to actually scale disruptive technology. In this episode, Will Allen, holder of 102 US patents and the first HP Fellow promoted within HP's Global Print Business, takes us inside three decades of Silicon Valley innovation from logic analyzers to consumer inkjet printing to his current role as CTO at Kaspix, where he's pioneering ultra-low-power AI inference using analog circuits. We explore why research should be treated as investment portfolio management (not an expense to cut), how “showing beats telling” when getting buy-in for radical ideas, and why getting AI to the “true edge” – directly at sensors and actuators – will fundamentally change computing economics. What You'll Discover:[00:00] Why Research and Development Are Two Different Things→ The fatal mistake of treating R&D as a single expense line when research is actually an investment with portfolio-level returns[06:03] Has Silicon Valley Run Out of Ideas?→ Why scaling success creates the very constraints that prevent future innovation, and whether we're less innovative than decades past[10:12] The Scaling Trap That Kills Success→ Real HP story: how field-fixing problems scaled so badly that engineers couldn't design problems out, and what this means for any growing business[16:23] Getting Past the “$100 Million Question”→ How to navigate corporate demand for predictable returns when developing something the market has never seen before[18:03] “A Functioning Proto Is Worth a Thousand Pictures”→ The clownfish story: how a weekend demo got low-drop-volume printing approved after months of rejection, and the art of communicating on stakeholders' terms[21:16] Signal Spotting and Fundamental vs Killer Apps→ Will's framework for distinguishing noise from transformational trends—and why asking “what's the killer app?” might be the wrong question[24:47] Kaspix and the True Edge→ Why analog circuits for AI inference could be as transformative as the mouse, enabling intelligence directly at transducers without memory-compute bottlenecks[29:56] Where AI Is Actually Heading→ Beyond the hype: specialized AIs, “AI middle management,” and why rapid societal change from deterministic technology creates uncomfortable transitions[36:04] The Advice Will Would Give His Younger Self→ Why leaders who invested years in education suddenly think quarterly, and how to reclaim the long-term thinking that got you thereAbout Will Allen:Will Allen is CTO at Kaspix, pioneering ultra-low-power AI inference through analog circuit design. Previously, he spent 30 years at HP, becoming the first HP Fellow promoted within HP's Global Print Business. He designed the color imaging pipeline used in HP's first 4 million color consumer inkjet printers, led IP production in HP Labs' AI and Emerging Compute Lab, and holds 102 issued US patents across printing, displays, robotics, and digital imaging.Related Links:Will's LinkedIn ProfileWill's Professional HomepageWill's YouTube ChannelKaspixKaspix Founder Pablo Zegers interviewed on The Innovators Podcast by John Biggs
Getting Past the Gatekeeper: The Owner Always Answers Hi everyone, Carl Gould here with your #70secondCEO. So hard to get through the gatekeeper. Who's not there? The employees? Who is there? You are. I said you want to find the owner? Just call off-peak hours. Because the phone probably rings to them anyway. Because no one else will own it and they don't want to miss a sale. I said the owners are easy to find. It's the employees that are harder to find. So we need to get past that. Never was there a better example than when Elon Musk bought Twitter. On the day that Elon Musk bought Twitter, Jack Dorsey was like, I am so sorry about what might happen to you all. You have all been so good to Twitter. Elon Musk shows up with a sink and he's like, hey listen, I'm the guy who slept on the floor for seven years at Tesla. You're not ready to work? Leave. So like, what's with the sink on? I don't know. I just had it in my hands. It needed to be bought in. Is it a metaphor? No, it's a sink. I think this goes in the toilet. Yeah, that goes in there. You got it. And a year later, what is Twitter? It's not even Twitter anymore. That's why it's called work, folks. Come in, work. If you want to come in and work, go find somewhere else. Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. My name is Carl Gould and this has been your #70secondCEO.

Being a great manager doesn't require you to be a hero. But you might slip into that mindset. It can look like perfectionism, and anxiety about how others see you. It leads to overworking, isolating, and being overly responsible. It also creates a lot of pressure, feeling like everything is on your shoulders and it's up to you to keep everything together (no mistakes allowed!). In this episode, you'll learn more about why the hero mindset is easy to slip into, and how it will hold you back from being an effective leader. You'll also learn why seeing yourself as a whole human is the key to managing yourself and your own wellbeing. When we think of a storm at sea in the Bible, we might think of Jonah or even Noah. Toward the end of the Book of Acts, we read a story of a storm and even a shipwreck that almost ended Paul's life on his way to Rome. This week's episode focuses on how God's salvation can sometimes show up later than we like and harder than we think it needs to be.

How many times do we hear or say, “I wish I'd never gone there, or done that, I wish I have stayed in school, I wish I'd gone to college”. We all have experienced things that we wish had never happened. Regrets, Failures, Bad Choices. If we don't get past them, they will effect us and detour us from the great future God has for us and our loved ones.Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT) For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. They also explored the growing issue of outbound calls being flagged as spam, with tips on how to test your number, avoid call blocking, and protect your reputation with the carriers. A standout moment came when a subscriber described how they use ChatGPT and property photos to create rehab estimates and scope of work reports—an efficient way to generate offers and impress sellers. The conversation wrapped with advice for investors on building buyer networks through REI groups and Facebook communities, and a reminder that the most effective lead conversion strategies blend phone, mail, online credibility, and real relationships—executed with consistency and empathy.

God's call on Connie Czepiel's life began as a teenager when the Lord began to break her heart for people suffering in other countries. With a passion for the medical field, Connie joined the Air Force, but God (and the military) had other plans. Connie was educated in finance - something she never anticipated. After a divorce, and as a single mother of three, Connie acquired work as a contracted finance manager, and it took her around the world. She could have chosen to wallow in hurt and bitterness. Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in to the latest episode of the LDS Mission Podcast! Today on episode 194. Getting Past Mental Roadblocks, we're talking about something that I know so many of us struggle with - mental roadblocks and limiting beliefs. As I shared, it's so easy for us to get caught up in this idea that we need to have the "right" thoughts and feelings before we can take action. But the truth is, those mental roadblocks are never going to fully go away. Our brains are wired to seek out problems and want to avoid discomfort. So instead of waiting around for the perfect mindset, I encouraged listeners to just feel the fear or insecurity and do it anyway. We can't let our inner critic, that "Grumpy Grandma" voice, keep us stuck. It's all about having the courage to take small steps forward, even when it feels uncomfortable. Because that's where the real growth and progress happens. I hope this episode helps you break through your own mental blocks and start taking action towards your goals. Let me know if you have any other questions! As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends.
