Taking a true look at where your business is taking you and working hard to give customers what they want. Bill Rosenberg, way to go. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Colair Cooling & Heating Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders podcast. Dave Young here, along with Stephen Semple, talking empires. And what better way to get an empire started in the morning than to have a donut? Stephen Semple: There you go. Dave Young: And a cup of coffee. Stephen Semple: That's it. Dave Young: So today's topic is Dunkin Donuts. Stephen Semple: Dunkin Donuts. There we are. America runs on Dunkin, right? Dave Young: I don't know a lot of history about them. I have childhood memories of Dunkin Donuts and then no memories for a long time, and then sort of rediscovered them when my daughter was going to school in Boston. I think they're a Boston or Massachusetts origin story. Stephen Semple: They are. Very good. Dave Young: But I feel like they've had some ups and downs maybe. Stephen Semple: Oh, they've had a bunch of ups and downs. There's no question. But they are. They're from Quincy, Mass, just outside of Boston. Dave Young: Okay. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So they were started by Bill Rosenberg in 1950, and today they have close to 13,000 stores. They're the second-largest restaurant chain in the US, they're worth about $9 billion. And if you're in New York City, they have an unbelievable concentration in New York. There's one every five blocks. And I'll tell you, it was weird when I was in New York last summer, and you're walking around, it felt like there was one every two blocks. It's more how it felt. But there's literally one every five blocks in New York City. Dave Young: Including the airports, right? They're everywhere. Stephen Semple: They really are. So the origin of Dunkin really goes back to the late 1930s because the US economy at that point had been struggling for close to a decade. With the Great Depression, unemployment peaked at 20% in an era where there was little in the way of safety nets. And this actually had a big impact on the food business because at this time, snacks have started to be reinvented as lunch. So we're seeing this movement towards these smaller packaged foods. People wanted something small that was a fun to eat item, that was not expensive, that really started to dominate the food market. And we've seen that in other podcasts that we've done with other foods. So Bill Rosenberg is from Boston, and he has a successful food truck business. And by 1946, he's starting to make enough to start a brick-and-mortar location. So when he launches the business, here's something Bill notices, is that in his food truck business, 40% of the sales were coffee and donuts. Dave Young: Wow. Okay. Stephen Semple: That was 40% of the sales from the food truck. So when he launches the business, he realizes that he wants to create a new idea centered around coffee and donuts. And you know what, it's interesting. When we go back to companies like Toys R Us and things like that, or even a Dollar Store, it's this observation of, "Hey, here's this thing that's selling." Or in Toys R Us cases, they looked at it and said, boy, toys are a big part of a department store. Maybe we should just do something along that lines. So this is similar to what he saw. He saw, look, coffee and donuts is a big part of the sales. Why don't I create something around that?

What's Good Dimah Fam! You know, life is incredibly complex and messy. It's filled with moments where we falter, stumble, and outright fall. And in these moments, the concept of second chances becomes a beacon of hope. But, man, it's not always easy. Like, when you give someone another shot, and they let you down again, it kinda stings, doesn't it? You start wondering if it's worth it, especially when your heart's been on the line a few times. It's tough because you want to be kind and understanding, but you also have to protect your own feelings. Then there's the tricky part about people who might see your kindness as something to take advantage of. You know, those who think, "Oh, they'll forgive me anyway, so I can just do whatever." It's a bummer when that happens because it feels like they're not really valuing your big heart. And in relationships? Oh boy, it gets even more complicated. Sometimes, giving too many chances starts to feel less like kindness and more like you're being played. It's hard to tell if they're genuinely trying to change or just using your willingness to forgive to their advantage. But here's the cool thing about giving second chances: it reminds us that nobody's perfect, not even us. We've all needed a do-over at some point, right? When someone's got your back, giving you that chance to make things right, it feels pretty amazing. It's about knowing we're all in this together, making mistakes and learning from them. So yeah, giving second chances is a bit of a gamble. It means being brave enough to get hurt but also believing in the goodness of people. It's about hoping that this time, things will be different. And when it works out, when someone really takes that second chance and makes the best of it, it's like, "Wow, this is what it's all about." It's not easy, but it's part of what makes us all human, but you always have to remember are you ready to give that person another chance despite what it's doing to you? We love you all so much! Thanks for listening!

Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12   https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 “Intention means every decision, from the most obviously significant to the seemingly mundane, matters.” “My dad says “The best way to learn is to teach.” He taught me to study for tests as if I were going in to deliver a presentation. At EMP, I made teaching part of our culture.” "Public speaking is a leadership skill." Excellence is about small details — A couple of examples of that were lighting and music. “Maybe people don't notice every single individual detail, but in aggregate, they're powerful. In any great business, most of the details you closely attend to are ones that only a tiny, tiny percentage of people will notice.” "Some of the best advice I ever got about starting in a new organization is; Don't cannonball. Ease into the pool." Magic: “Too many people approach creative brainstorming by taking what's practical into consideration way too early in the process. Start with what you want to achieve, instead of limiting yourself to what's realistic or sustainable.” “Sometimes magic is just someone spending more time on something than anyone else might reasonably expect.” – Penn and Teller "Often, the perfect moment to give someone more responsibility is before they're ready." The daily 30-minute meeting: “A daily 30-minute meeting is where a collection of individuals becomes a team.” Find hidden treasures: Will's dad had his own platoon in Vietnam. It wasn't a great platoon. On it was a guy nicknamed Kentucky, Kentucky was lazy and wasn't in great shape. He wasn't that smart, but he was skilled directionally and had a great feel for being in the woods.  “A leader's responsibility is to identify the strengths of the people on their team, no matter how buried those strengths might be.” “Business like life is all about how you make people feel. It's that simple and that hard.” - Danny Meyer "In restaurants, our reason for being is to make people feel, seen, it's to make them feel welcome, it's to give them a sense of belonging. The food, the service, the design, they are simply ingredients in the recipe of human connection" “The One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson. I still give The One Minute Manager to every person I promote. It's an amazing resource, in particular on how to give feedback. My biggest takeaways were: Criticize the behavior, not the person. Praise in public; criticize in private. Praise with emotion, criticize without emotion.” “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” “What criticism offers you, then, is an invitation to have your perspective challenged—or at least to grow by truly considering it. You might stick with a choice you've been criticized for or end up somewhere completely different. The endgame isn't the point as much as the process: you grow when you engage with another perspective and decide to decide again.” “The aggregation of marginal gains,” or a small improvement in a lot of areas. In his words: “The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improve it by 1 percent, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together.”

We saw during the pandemic that giving people cash is good for individuals and the economy as a whole. It makes sense: When people have more money, they spend it in their communities and stimulate the local economy. So why don't we give people money all the time? Our guest today started a charity that combats poverty by giving people cash, with no strings attached, to use how they wish. The results have been really encouraging. Paul Niehaus, co-founder of GiveDirectly, explains how his program works—and more importantly, why it works. Paul Niehaus is an economist at UCSD and an entrepreneur working to accelerate the end of extreme poverty. He is co-founder, former president, and current director at GiveDirectly, the leading international NGO specialized in digital cash transfers and consistently rated one of the most impactful ways to give.
