I consider myself a goal-oriented person, but that doesn't mean I love setting goals in a work environment. (What is a SMART goal anyway?!) Still, it's a leader's expectation to set goals with your team members, and show them you're invested in their success. Goalsetting should happen for new employees during onboarding and on an annual basis for all other employees. It may make sense to do this for project-based goals, too. This episode provides five steps to get you started in setting goals for your team that actually work. Your One Bold Move: Set meaningful goals with your team members that motivate them to achieve more than they thought possible and remember to celebrate progress along the way. And just like that, schedules are back-to-back with more meetings, emails, and deadlines. You may have also added back in a commute. All of this may make you feel more out of control at work. Without pausing to reflect on where you are and what you value, it would be easy to get caught up in the churn and keep moving forward each day. But you deserve better than working at everyone else's whim, which means it's time to review and reset your boundaries. This episode provides insights on how to create better boundaries in three fairly universal areas at work to preserve your energy, which will set you up for success at work and home. Have you been in a conversation with a friend or colleague who feels the need to be right about everything? Conversations can feel like an argument. They may not even realize they're doing it. Research shows that while working from home makes you more productive, it won't necessarily help you advance your career. It's especially challenging for people working in a hybrid workplace where some may be back in the office and others aren't, or if the days you're there don't line up with the senior leaders of the organization. Now consider that more women, especially working mothers, want to work remotely. If "out of sight, out of mind" is true, then it will be on you to make sure you're visible even while you work from home. Did you ever wish you could be an Olympian? I did (though I didn't do anything to actually get my closer to that childhood dream!). I have been following with interest Simone Biles' return to the Olympics--and her subsequent decision to prioritize her health, wellbeing, and safety over competing in the all around. This moment has given us a pivotal opportunity to reflect on mental health, particularly at work. This episode shares things to keep in mind when considering how to talk about mental health at work, and why it matters--particularly for women who have been taught you have to compromise yourself to meet others' expectations. Also included is what to say when asking for a mental health day, how to approach a recurring therapy appointment, or learning more about mental health resources provided by your employer. For people leaders, you should give thought to how you'll proactively address and reactively handle these conversations. This week, Matt and I will celebrate our 18-year wedding anniversary. We've navigated a lot as a dual career couple. According to Pew Research, in about half of two parent couples, both spouses work full-time. In that same study, 56% of couples said that balancing two careers is hard. When we were starting our lives together, people weren't as open about all the wonderful things and the challenges of being in a dual career couple. Whether you're in this stage of your life now or considering it for the future, this is what I would share with other dual career couples and what I wish had been shared with us. According to multiple recent polls, American workers are considering new job options. Some polls show percentages as high as 40% of all workers planning to leave their jobs this year. While it’s great to see companies (and hiring) open back up again, this new reality is something for every manager to be aware of—and proactively planning for. One of the most influential factors in employees’ work satisfaction is who they work for; meaning that leaders play a significant role in retaining your team members. This episode provides three tips to help you do that in the post-pandemic work environment. All this week we’re continuing the theme of exploring the Great Resignation and how to approach this as employees and team leaders. Your One Bold Move: Understand what motivates your employees and help them make progress in their work so you can create meaningful engagement--and help retain them in the organization. All this week, we’re continuing the theme of exploring the Great Resignation and how to approach this as employees and team leaders. People have been spending a lot of time over the last year considering who they work with and for. Making a career change post-pandemic will require even more intentionality than before. You’re trying to figure out if this is the right time, the right role, and the right organization—and sometimes grass looks greener until you get up close. I’ve shared before what you should be thinking about before taking a new job, and I’ve updated these questions here for the post pandemic environment. This episode shares four things to consider before making a job switch right now. Your One Bold Move: Intentionally consider all aspects of the job change in the post pandemic world, so you can bring your best self to your work and life. All this week, we’re continuing the theme of exploring the Great Resignation and how to approach this as employees and team leaders. It’s hard to know if it’s the pandemic or the job. Maybe you feel like you need to do *something* but you still have more you want to learn or do in your current role. If you’ve decided it’s more likely the circumstances we’re in than the job you have, it doesn’t mean you have to settle for languishing. This episode shares five tips to help you re-energize yourself at work. Your One Bold Move: It’s normal to feel restless, anxious, or even bored at work. Channel your strengths and purpose to motivate yourself and keep you moving forward. According to a recent survey from Microsoft, 40% of workers are considering leaving their job within the next year. That is what is keeping me up at night. How am I as a leader supporting my team members to fulfill their potential and their purpose in our organization? As a thought leader on leadership and career development, how am I giving you the tools you need to make the right choices for yourself? This week we’ll be exploring topics on all things job-related. It will be less about the tactical things related to a job search, interviews, networking (but I’ve got episodes for you on all of those topics!). This week will focus more on the thought process that goes into deciding whether it’s time for a new job or you just need to re-energize yourself at work, the most important questions to consider before taking a new job, and how managers can support team members who are likely going through these career questions for themselves. It’s not always clear when it’s time to leave a job. Sometimes it hits you like a lightning bolt, sometimes it’s little things that add up to become a big thing, and other times you’re just living through a pandemic and it makes everything a lot less clear. This episode will share warning signs when it’s time to think about leaving your job (albeit not an exhaustive list). Your One Bold Move: It’s not always clear when it’s time to leave a job, but look for the warning signs in your work environment and in your heart. In your heart is a song. I like to think of it as your purpose. Throughout your life, the song may sound differently, but it’s always there—if you listen. This episode shares a story of how I reclaimed my voice and worked toward my purpose over time and how I want to help you do this, too. What song does your heart want to sing? Your One Bold Move: Listen to your purpose and work toward it every day. When you’re working on a new project, program, or event, you spend so much time planning and preparing that when it’s finally over you’re exhausted and ready to move on. But there’s a way to leverage the process to carry your learning forward and set you up for success in the future. It’s through reflection on what went well and what to do differently, often called an After Action Review or a Retrospective Review. In today’s episode I’ll walk through why you should consider doing this at work and how to get started. You don't have to be a team leader to facilitate any of this and you can also apply these principles to your own work or personal goals. Your One Bold Move: Before you move on to the next thing at work, spend time as a group reflecting on what you’ve learned and how you will apply this going forward. Today launches HeyMama’s campaign, Motherhood On the Resume. I was so moved when I heard about this campaign, because for much of my career, and for many women before me, motherhood has been considered a penalty. Being a working mother required a dual identity I hadn’t been prepared for. Here's the thing: Motherhood has made me a better employee and, most especially, a better leader. Working has made me a better mother, too. Your One Bold Move: Join me and HeyMama in adding Mother to your LinkedIn profile and/or resume. Together let’s destigmatize motherhood in the workplace. I love WOTD so much, I'm reprising this episode with new thoughts. At work, it's important to celebrate the big and small wins. Things move so quickly, you may not slow down enough to acknowledge what you've done. You may also feel uncomfortable sharing your awesomeness with other people. I developed Win of the Day (WOTD) to bring more celebration to work--and encourage my team to share their own successes. This episode provides tips on how WOTD works, what a win is, and why it matters, so you can bring WOTD to your team or office. Your One Bold Move: Share a WOTD with a colleague or your team. Invite them to share, too. Find more ways to celebrate together at work. Send me a note with your WOTD so I can cheer you on! Your strengths helped get you to where you are today. Doing more of the same thing or doing it better will not, however, lead to sustainable growth. What got you here won't get you where you're going next. (I should mention is a book by the same title and that’s not really what this is about. I had mixed feelings on the book, though it’s clearly celebrated by many.) This episode shares three things you need to do to level up. This will be important in transitioning to the next normal, going from peer to manager, taking on a promotion, leading as your team grows, etc. Your One Bold Move: Reaching the next level will require new learning and adaptability. Believe in yourself and what is possible for where you’re going next. For more from Shanna: Text SHANNA to 66866 to get my leadership and career tips directly to your inbox twice monthly. Do you feel you’re able to innovate at work? Lots of attention is paid to entrepreneurs who start their own companies, but you don’t have to start your own business to build something meaningful. You can be what’s called an intrapreneur—someone who innovates within a larger organization. Organizations rely on innovation for continued growth, but there are benefits for you, too. When you’re more creative at work, you’re contributing to your own learning and job satisfaction. This episode shares five ways you can bring creativity to your work every day. Your One Bold Move: Sharing new ideas and trying out initiatives are how an organization—and you—can grow and evolve.
