Lauren Goodwin, creator of Career Contessa, loves helping women navigate their careers. After having done all the “right” things, her first job after college left her wanting something more. After a long job search, Lauren became a recruiter. Now on the other side of the hiring process, she finally understood what employers were looking for. And from that, Career Contessa was born! There are more women in the career world now than ever before! Lauren tells us that job flexibility and pay are the two main things we should be mindful of in our current careers. If you're feeling burnt out, present your boss with a list of solutions to your desires that would give you more flexibility in your current role. Pay is always something we should be evaluating too, even if we are happy at our current jobs. Researching the open market for salaries of your same position at other employers can help you know your value and worth. Lauren goes over how to have a salary negotiation if you find you are being undervalued at a job that you love.Networking is everything! We know you've been told to network externally, but don't forget to be relationally-minded within your current company. Lauren suggests keeping your Linkedin profile up to date even if you are taking a career break. It's also never too late to pivot into a new career field if your priorities have shifted. And don't forget, sometimes the “good enough” job allows us a better work/life balance than the “dream job”. Lauren McGoodwin challenges the notion of the “dream job” and makes the case for pursuing the “good-enough” job. — YOU'LL LEARN — 1) Why the dream job actually doesn't exist 2) The true drivers of happiness at work 3) Why to become invaluable–not indispensable Subscribe or visit AwesomeAtYourJob.com/ep940 for clickable versions of the links below. — ABOUT LAUREN — Lauren founded Career Contessa in 2013 after experiencing a gap in career development resources for women who might be job searching, soul searching, leading and managing, or trying to find new ways to advance within their careers. With women accounting for more than 50% of the workforce and the workforce being less defined than ever before, it seemed crazy (and outdated) that a resource for us didn't exist. Fast-forward to today, Career Contessa is now the largest online career site built inclusively for women. Lauren is also author of Power Moves: How Women Can Pivot, Reboot, and Build a Career of Purpose (2020), co-host of The Career Contessa podcast, and an educator/speaker on a variety of career topics. Formerly, Lauren was a University Recruiter for Hulu focused on hiring, employer branding, and program management. Lauren has a Bachelors in Education from the University of Oregon and a Masters in Communication Management from the University of Southern California where she wrote her thesis on millennials and career resources. Lauren from Career Contessa joins me this week for a revelatory conversation about the myth of the elusive “dream job.” Ironically, it took getting my dream job to realize it's…still a job. Wait a second, why does this still feel like work sometimes? So why does acknowledging this myth and moving past it matter? Because the illusion that there's a “dream job” out there for you (the career version of a soulmate) leads to both expectation hangovers and disappointment when—surprise!—even a job you really like comes with downsides. This episode is an exploration of the idea that maybe the grass isn't always greener, and the things that make a job “good” are often overlooked in our misguided pursuit of a job that elicits “passion.” That said, we also discuss the importance of liking what you do (to a healthy extent) and the positive financial outcomes that enjoying your work can bring.

In this week's episode, I speak with Danielle who eventually went from accounting to corporate communications. But her message is less about the career change and more about the steps she took to get there. First moving out of accounting, when she realized it was impacting her health, to recruiting accountants. And then writing on the side, sharing her story and writing for others, then to social media marketing and finally corporate communications. But she kept taking small steps to get her closer to her goal (and honestly, learning more about what she wanted that goal to be along the way)!As always, please consider subscribing, leaving a rating and review and sharing this podcast and the whole series with others.
