In this insightful solo episode of Thriving in Intersectionality, host Lola Adeyemo challenges the traditional one-to-one mentorship model and introduces a powerful alternative: creating your personal board of directors. Drawing from her experience serving on multiple nonprofit boards and navigating her own career as an immigrant woman of color in STEM, Lola shares a strategic approach to assembling mentors who can address different aspects of your professional development and intersectional identity. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why traditional mentorship models often set both mentors and mentees up for disappointment How to identify gaps in your current mentorship circle Strategies for assembling your personal board of directors across various industries and hierarchy levels Practical approaches to maintaining meaningful relationships with multiple mentors Setting appropriate boundaries and knowing when to evolve or end mentoring relationships Ways to create mutual value in mentoring relationships The Limitations of Traditional Mentorship Lola explains how the conventional one-to-one mentorship model places unrealistic expectations on individual mentors, especially those from underrepresented groups who already face significant pressure in leadership positions. For professionals with multiple intersectional identities, finding a single mentor who understands all aspects of their experience is nearly impossible. This creates a gap between expectations and reality that can leave both parties frustrated. The Board of Directors Approach Drawing from her experience serving on nonprofit boards, Lola introduces a more effective alternative: creating a personal board of directors. This approach distributes the mentorship responsibility across several individuals with complementary skills, experiences, and perspectives. Just as organizations intentionally select board members to fill specific needs, professionals should strategically identify mentors who can address different aspects of their development. Key Steps to Building Your Personal Board: 1. Assemble Your Board Strategically Take inventory of your identity and career aspirations (e.g., woman in STEM, parent, aspiring leader) Identify gaps in your current support network Look for mentors across different experience levels, not just executives Be specific about what you need from each potential board member 2. Maintain Relationships Effectively Create value for your board members (mentorship should be mutually beneficial) Structure different formats for interactions (15-minute check-ins, co-attending events) Establish clear boundaries for each relationship Regularly assess if the relationship is still providing value for both parties Document feedback and keep doors open for future reconnection Final Thoughts Lola emphasizes that distributing mentorship across a "board" of individuals allows professionals to receive more targeted guidance while respecting everyone's time and expertise. This approach recognizes that no single person can fulfill all mentorship needs, especially for those with multiple intersectional identities navigating complex professional environments. "Have people that you can trust to receive their honest opinion and advice, while keeping space for you to make your own decisions, without them trying to micromanage or direct you" A personal board of directors can transform careers and lives. Like many, I hadn't been deliberate in setting up my own personal board. Yet, I unknowingly have a network of trusted advisors shaping my path. Katie compared it to the eclectic cast of the show The Big Bang Theory, where each person brings their unique flair and insights to the table. A personal board is not just about having people you trust or people that are from similar professions. A well balanced board has a dynamic mix of diverse perspectives to guide and even challenge you. This board isn't about holding meetings with agendas though. It is about leaning on the people you trust for professional or even personal guidance. As you think about your own board, be aware of how you may play a key role on someone else's board. Think of it as a dance of advice and encouragement. Setting up a personal board can provide that critical support and validation. Those are the people that can help you through changes in your organization or give you the nudge to continue pursuing your dream job even when the path gets rocky. Offer value to your mentors, as they do for you. Recognize their guidance, implement their advice, and maintain a reciprocal relationship. In the world of career growth, the mutual respect with your personal board of directors has a way of turning advice into inspiration. Have you ever attended a keynote that truly wowed you—one that stood out, engaged the audience, and provided an unforgettable experience? Let's face it, most keynotes do the job, but very few deliver that multidimensional magic. In today's episode, I sit down with Julia Korn, the founder and CEO of The Authenticity Guide and a recent client. We worked closely together to create her new keynote, from the content to the magic touches that made it a 10 out of 10. How did she do it? That's what we're diving into! We explore: The step-by-step process Julia used to land her keynote slot a year in advance (hint: proactive pitching matters!). Why the concept of a Personal Board of Directors became the winning topic that resonated with her audience. How Julia and I worked together to create a keynote that went beyond content to deliver an experience, including interactive elements like a creative game show featuring Oprah, Yoda, and even Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg! The importance of storytelling and vulnerability, including how Julia captivated her audience with her personal story of a career demotion—and even laid flat on the stage to drive her point home. We also discuss the work that goes into crafting a stellar keynote: Balancing humor, audience engagement, and actionable takeaways. Collaborating with AV teams to nail the technical elements. Hiring a videographer to capture powerful moments for future sizzle reels. Julia shares the audience's reactions, from laughter to tears, and how her keynote set a transformative tone for the rest of the conference. She also provides valuable tips for speakers who want to make a lasting impact, whether they're on a keynote stage or pitching their next big speaking opportunity. Welcome to the Capacity Conversations Podcast. This is what I like to call a “sister-friend” community, which is the safe space to talk openly and honestly about the challenges we face while managing the competing priorities between our personal and professional lives. Many of us are either in corporate, an entrepreneur of a combination of the two, on top of being moms, wives, caregivers, big sister's or just the go-to person in our circles of friends and families. Having all that responsibility can leave you overwhelmed and depleted if you don't take inventory of where you're at on a regular basis. In this episode, I sit down with Nakisha Hicks. She is the visionary founder of ElevateHer, LLC, , which is dedicated to empowering organizations and leaders, especially mid to senior-level Black women in HR. With nearly two decades of strategic HR experience, Nakisha provides consulting services for nonprofits and organizations serving vulnerable populations, executive coaching, and professional development programs. She is a dynamic speaker on topics such as imposter syndrome, emotional intelligence, and overcoming self-doubt, offering valuable strategies to enhance confidence and leadership. Nakisha's impactful approach has increased retention, improved compliance, and fostered inclusive workplaces. She's been featured in multiple publications such as SHRM, Lattice, and EBONY magazine, and has been a speaker at events including our very own Inaugural Capacity Conference, Transform and NAAAHRs national conference. Nakisha's influence is widely recognized as transformative within the HR landscape. We talk about what it looks and feels like to have a personal board of directors, and why it's essential for your capacity. Kisha mentioned that your board is made up of people you pay, those who are your mentors, and of course your family friends. Here's how she broke it down: The People You Pay: Doctors, therapists, coaches, financial planners, massage therapist, etc. These are the folks you invest into make sure you're healthy in every since of the word, across every pillar of capacity. On this episode of OneHaas, hear from alumna Sahar Kleinman – a global strategy and operational excellence executive at Amazon Advertising. Sahar, a first generation American, grew up in New York after her parents emigrated from Iran to further their education. The time she spent watching her mom work in finance on Wall Street and help run her uncle's photo business had a significant impact on Sahar's career path. She and host Sean Li chat about Sahar's experience moving from brick and mortar to the e-commerce world, the importance of taking risks, and how Haas provided her with her own personal board of directors. *OneHaas Alumni Podcast is a production of Haas School of Business and is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:How her family's photo business shaped her early on“That was the first of my hard lessons to be learned as a child, to really learn what it takes to drive a business. And I'm talking about all the tasks that you can think of and having to earn my way to that spot where I could actually start working on developing photos for customers…and it started with grabbing that Windex bottle and wiping the windows outside of the studio. And really learning really early on that it takes hard work to get to where you want to go.”Why it feels like she gained a personal board of directors from Haas“There's something about putting yourself in a room with a bunch of strangers who all of a sudden over time become family… And you get to know people and you share your stories, and you have this unbiased group of people who are just looking to help you unblock yourself oftentimes. And so maybe during the program things would come up that were work related and then you find yourself just having these go-to individuals that really help you think things through and hold you accountable to the things that you think of doing for yourself and the things that you haven't even thought of doing for yourself and for others.”What keeps her engaged and motivated to stay connected to the Haas network“I want to be able to create that same feeling of being in school and back in the program, even though we're not in the program anymore. I always want to feel that optimism that I felt in the classroom, that not only can I do anything and lead through anything and be anything, but I want others to feel the same thing. And so I want to create these opportunities in the forum for people to stay connected and be able to share what they've been thinking about that's inspiring to them and, you know, have a sandbox of network members to collaborate with to nurture and debate those kinds of thoughts.”On what's next for Sahar“I'm just always out there thirsting for the next big challenge. Ideally, I want to share my knowledge and help lead the next generation to solve big problems and make a big impact. And even better if those next generation leaders come from Haas.”Show Links:LinkedIn ProfileSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations

Everyone's heard the phrase, your network is your net worth. Then why do so few mid-career women have the robust network that will get them into senior management? According to McKinsey, even female CEOs have networks that are several times smaller than their male colleagues and the numbers get even worse the farther down the ladder you go. So if men have this all figured out, why is this still something that women shy away from? In this episode, Jill explores the misconceptions that women have about networking and why a personal board of directors can accelerate the path for every woman who wants to rise up into senior management. She shares about the essential mindset shifts that you need to take to be able to go from nay to yay when it comes to this important work and she will help you design your own personal board of directors to save you from going to networking events and having to talk to a room full of strangers or tooting your horn around the company. 02:39 — Your "good work" isn't enough to secure a promotion into senior management05:12 — How to design your personal advisory board so you know what seats you'd like to fill06:57 — The types of people you can consider having on your personal board of directorsBook Your Free Growth Accelerator Call: https://calendly.com/sistersmart/leader— —

They highlighted significant shifts in the workplace over the past four years, including the entry of Gen Z into the workforce, the trend towards remote work, the evolution of sales strategies, and the increased need for emotional intelligence in leadership. Michael D. Levitt agreed with Bramson's points, noting the growing emphasis on emotional intelligence. Bramson emphasized the importance of emotional intelligence and communication, which he felt had been overlooked even after the financial crisis. Work Culture Evolution: Balancing Work-Life Harmony Michael and Paul Bramson discussed the evolution of work culture over the years, specifically the shift from a strict separation of work and personal life to a focus on work-life harmony. They emphasized the importance of understanding and accommodating employees' personal circumstances that might affect their work. They also touched upon the role of information and how it can be utilized to allocate resources and ensure project success. The conversation concluded with the agreement that having more information does not necessarily mean success, but rather how that information is used is crucial. Burnout and Communication in the Workplace Paul Bramson and Michael D. Levitt discussed the importance of effective communication and the impact of burnout in the workplace. They emphasized that employees feel unheard and disconnected, leading to burnout. They also highlighted the complexity of leaving an organization due to the same issues that may be present elsewhere. Michael suggested that individuals should debrief themselves when leaving an organization to understand their role in the situation. Personal Board of Advisors for Decision Making Paul Bramson and Michael D. Levitt discussed the value of having a personal board of advisors for decision making and accountability. They emphasized the importance of having older or more experienced individuals who can provide constructive feedback and help maintain focus. The discussion also highlighted the significance of running new ideas by this board for careful analysis and scrutiny. Michael D. Levitt stressed the importance of setting priorities, reflecting on feedback, and being open to constructive criticism. He also emphasized the need for patience, the benefits of being present in communication, and the link between these principles and effective leadership. Personal Accountability and Emotional Intelligence Michael and Bramson discussed the importance of personal accountability and the need to avoid a victim mentality. Michael shared his own experiences with burnout and how he took responsibility for his actions instead of blaming others. He emphasized the importance of curiosity and learning new things. Bramson noted the emergence of a new element of emotional intelligence, the social quotient, and predicted it would gain significant traction in the future. Workplace Dynamics: Loss of Personal Connections Michael D. Levitt and Paul Bramson reflected on the changes in workplace dynamics, emphasizing the loss of personal connections and conversations that happened outside of work. They contrasted this with the early days of their careers when workplaces fostered deeper relationships and socialization. They observed that in today's workplaces, where remote work is increasingly common, employees often do not know each other's personal lives, even after working together for years. Paul Bramson shared that some companies they work with require younger employees to work on-site for the first two years to foster connections and build a sense of community. Workplace Happiness and Remote Work Shared Spaces Michael D. Levitt and Paul Bramson discussed the importance of workplace happiness and the benefits of remote work. They talked about the concept of shared spaces for remote work, where people from different companies rent rooms or desks, creating a sense of community. They also touched on the popularity of in-person events and conferences despite the availability of virtual options. Bramson mentioned his active presence on LinkedIn and his website, PaulBramson.com. They also discussed the impact of technology on interviews and meetings, noting that while virtual interactions aren't the same as in-person ones, they are still effective. Experience is a great teacher, but without reflection, guidance and support we can learn negative lessons. IQ doesn't predict how well we will learn, but we can accelerate our ability to learn. I describe the problem of passive learning and how we can engage with new ideas so we internalize them.Experiment: Learning how to learn using the four stage learning cycle: • Activists like to jump in to new experiences • Reflectors step back and review events • Theorists make mental models and predictions • Pragmatists like to plan how to apply ideasExperiment: Journaling to make reflection a habit using six-way reflection • Backward (what worked in the past) • Forward (where am I going?) • Inward (values and attitudes) • Outward (intention vs. impact) • Downward (the view from the balcony) • Upward (using your imagination) Experiment: Forming a Personal Board of Directors with key advisors: • Thinking partners you value for their objectivity • Allies who will support you when you need it • Advocates who have a seat at the table • Mentors and coaches who will give new perspectives Hosted on Acast.
