There's a moment in this conversation with 4x Olympic Champion Michael Johnson that stopped me in my tracks. He said, “Success doesn't care what you believe you deserve.”That line sums up what this episode is really about, the difference between wishing for results and doing the work required to earn them.Michael didn't become one of the most dominant athletes in history by chasing comfort. He became great by facing the hard truth. By asking himself the questions most of us avoid. And then doing something about it.In this episode, I unpack the habits Michael used throughout his life, from championship seasons to career-ending injuries to the day he was told he might never walk properly again. It's about discipline, honesty, and doing what it takes, not what feels easy.We explore:Why the best avoid shortcutsThe mindset Michael used to break recordsHow to handle setbacks without denialThe power of asking better questionsWhy doing the uncomfortable thing often leads to growthThis episode is a reminder that high performance doesn't come from believing you're ready. It comes from acting like it, even when no one's watching. Here is more information on the studies referenced: Self-Regulation and Performance in Elite Athletes (Joanne Hudson & Dave Day 2016, Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology)What Self-Awareness Really Is (and How to Cultivate It), (Dr. Tasha Eurich, Harvard Business Review)Emotion Regulation Choice (Gal Sheppes et al. 2012)Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (Carol Dweck)Self-Control and Grit (Angela Duckworth et al. What happens when a child spills leftovers on the kitchen floor and immediately labels himself "stupid"? For author Brenda Do, this heartbreaking moment sparked the creation of It's Okay Not to Know, a children's book challenging our perfection-obsessed culture.Growing up Chinese in 1970s America, Brenda never saw herself represented in children's literature; every book featured white children. This experience shaped her determination to create characters that every child could identify with, regardless of appearance or background. So she created a world of colorful monsters with the gender-neutral protagonist leading readers through lessons of self-compassion and curiosity.Brenda draws fascinating connections between childhood messaging and adult behavior, noting how our early experiences with "failure" shape our willingness to take risks later in life. She references Stanford professor Carol Dweck's groundbreaking research on growth mindset, explaining how praising effort rather than results can dramatically expand children's potential. With just 230 words and playful rhyming text, Brenda describes it as "Dr. Seuss meets Brené Brown" - simple language conveying profound emotional intelligence.Have a comment? My Business On Purpose
From Frustration to Flow: Building a System-Driven, Growth-Minded Business (for less than 50 employees)

My Business On Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2025 5:47

Most of the businesses we work with have less than 100 employees. In fact, if you were to do a bell curve, you'd see that most of our clients fall somewhere between five and 50 employees in that sweet spot. So we tend to give a lot of examples. The majority of our clients are in the contracting space or the AEC space—architecture, engineering, contracting—or industries that support those. It's a privilege to work with them. Within that, what we typically run into is not a lack of ideas or concepts, but a mindset barrier—that tends to be the rub—that keeps them from being liberated from chaos and making time for what matters most. Hey, it's Scott Beebe with Business On Purpose. Always a delight to bring you a few nuggets that can be helpful as you own a business you're trying not to be owned by. That leads to our mission: to liberate you from chaos and make time for what matters most. Make sure to visit our website, businessonpurpose.com, where you'll find all sorts of free resources. If you go to businessonpurpose.com/healthy, you can take a five-to-seven-minute assessment to evaluate the backend health of your business. Recently, I shared examples from American Paving Designs, clients of ours for years. I told you about how they had that systems mindset—whatever task they do, they document it, capture it, and record it like it's the last time they'll ever do it. Their approach to training and information management showcases the power of a growth mindset in action. By creating training videos their team can access and rewind as needed, they've implemented a system that saves time, reduces frustration, and empowers their team. That is the ultimate task and indication of a good leader: equipping the team. This method benefits both new employees seeking information for the first time and experienced staff who would otherwise answer the same questions repeatedly. How many times have we heard clients say, "How do I get people to stop knocking on my door asking to pick my brain?" One of the biggest barriers isn't ideas or opportunities—it's mindset. Their commitment to systematizing knowledge reflects a mindset shift crucial to growing businesses. What holds people back from systematizing isn't usually skill—it's mindset. Carol Dweck explains in her great book Mindset that a fixed mindset—locked up and padlocked—can hold you back and trap your business in chaos. A growth mindset, on the other hand, opens up continuous improvement, or what we call RPM: repetition, predictability, meaning—and also efficiency. With a growth mindset, you can begin to intentionally and systematically map out your business processes. Why? Not because you're a robot or obsessed, but because you want to equip others. This isn't just about process—it's about creating an environment of equipment where continuous, relentless learning (one of our five core values) and improvement are prioritized. You might be thinking, “But I'm not a systems person—that's not who I am.” Well, if that's the case, you have two options: push yourself to learn and develop the skills, or find people who excel in that area to help you. Either way, you must shift your mindset to understand the power of systematizing so that you can equip others. What's the purpose? To equip others. Why? So you and they can be liberated from chaos and make time for what matters most—not just leisure time, but meaningful work time, too. As a leader, your role is to provide the vision, mission, values, culture, resources, and support necessary to build and refine systems over time. Isn't it interesting how quickly I rattled those off—vision, mission, values, culture, resources, support? That takes a lot of time. I recently mapped out every element that needs to be trained in our business—not including the coaching task—and I'm already at 150. Creating effective systems isn't a one-time or one-module task. It's an ongoing effort to build, manage, and sharpen your tools. Continuous improvement is what separates businesses that thrive from those that merely survive—or worse, leave you stuck with a business run by a boss you hate and a job you don't like. By embracing a growth mindset and committing to systematization, you're setting your business up for long-term success—not just financially, but in solving today's problems and building a framework for tomorrow's challenges. It's both/and: learning from the past, acting in the present, and shaping the future. So what stops you? Again—it's the mindset. Visit mybusinessonpurpose.com/healthy, take the five-to-seven-minute assessment, and get a clear picture of where your business stands process-wise. Welcome to Citizen Church and Week 4 of our series, Hidden Gems — where we're uncovering powerful truths from Proverbs that impact everyday life. In today's message, Pastor Dustin brings a timely and convicting word on the power of our words — and how what we say reveals, reflects, and shapes the world around us. Key Scriptures: Proverbs 10:11 | Luke 6:45 | Proverbs 13:3 | Proverbs 17:28 | Proverbs 10:19 | Proverbs 12:18 | Genesis 2:19 In this message, you'll discover 3 reasons our words shouldn't be taken lightly: 1 Words reveal what's in the heart.   “For a man's words will always express what has been treasured in his heart.” (Luke 6:45) 2 Words require restraint and reflect wisdom.   Holding your tongue isn't weakness — it's wisdom. 3 Words carry the power of life and death.   They can build identity, heal wounds, and align us with God's truth — or tear down, destroy, and divide. “Don't just change your words; let God change your heart.” “Every thought has a voice, but not every thought deserves a microphone.” Our words are more than communication — they are spiritual instruments. God invites us into partnership to shape, encourage, and steward the world around us through what we say. Featuring a powerful quote from Dr. Carol Dweck: "What you praise shapes what a child values, how they see themselves, how they respond to challenges, and ultimately, who they become.” This message is for anyone who's ever struggled with what to say, when to speak, or how to bring healing through your words. If you're ready to walk in wisdom, speak life, and reflect the heart of God — don't miss this sermon.

Instead, it can be the opening note to your most authentic chapter yet. In this transformative episode, we explore how major life changes—like empty nesting, career shifts, or personal reinvention—are rooted in who we want to become, not just how we'll do it. Through relatable stories like Lisa, who questioned if binge-watching Netflix was her new purpose, and John, who believed he was “too old to start over,” we see how the stories we tell ourselves shape our experiences during these shifts. What makes this approach different? It's all about doing the inner work first. Before rushing into activities or projects, we examine the beliefs, fears, and identities that might be keeping us stuck. Guided by Carol Dweck's research on mindset, we learn to shift from a fixed mindset (“I'm only a parent”) to a growth mindset (“Who can I become now?”).You'll get practical prompts to uncover limiting beliefs, embrace vulnerability as your strength, and celebrate small wins that propel you forward. Rediscover passions you shelved, and open the door to unexpected joy and purpose.Remember George Eliot's words: "It's never too late to be what you might have been." Are you stuck in the cycle of starting and stopping recovery? Always "trying" but never fully committing? In this game-changing episode, Lindsey reveals how one simple phrase is sabotaging your progress and keeping you trapped in what she calls "decision defaulting." Learn the neuroscience behind why "I'm trying" programs your brain for failure, and discover the powerful mindset shift that transforms chronic restarters into recovery success stories. If you're tired of living in the "maybe someday" space and ready to make decisions that stick, this episode will revolutionize your approach to healing. What You'll Learn in This Episode The psychology behind "decision defaulting" and why your brain prefers it How the phrase "I'm trying" creates neural pathways for partial commitment The difference between illusion of control vs. real personal power Specific language shifts that activate "implementation intention" Why your eating disorder wants you to stay in "trying" mode A concrete challenge to break the decision defaulting cycle this week How to know when you're ready for professional support vs. continued self-help Key Moments & Timestamps Opening CTA for Consultation (0:30-2:00) Lindsey speaks directly to chronic restarters and those hesitant to start recovery What is Decision Defaulting? (2:00-5:00) "'Trying' is just a socially acceptable way of avoiding responsibility for your choices." Client Story: Emma's 3-Year Trying Cycle (3:30-4:30) How one client's language shift changed everything in recovery The Neuroscience of Decision Defaulting (5:00-8:30) Why undernourished brains default to tentative language and how trauma responses play a role From Trying to Deciding: The Power Shift (8:30-12:00) Specific examples of language that creates commitment vs. escape routes Your Decision-Making Challenge (12:00-14:00) Two concrete options to practice decisive action this week Powerful Quotes from This Episode On Decision Defaulting: "Decision defaulting is when you avoid making definitive choices because not deciding feels safer than deciding 'wrong.'" On the Trying Trap: "When you say 'I'm trying,' you're leaving yourself an escape route. You're keeping one foot out the door. You're protecting yourself from the vulnerability of full commitment." On Neural Pathways: "Every time you make a definitive choice and follow through, you strengthen the neural pathways associated with self-efficacy and personal agency. Every time you default on a decision, you reinforce the pathways associated with helplessness." On Eating Disorder Strategy: "Your eating disorder wants you to keep 'trying.' It wants you to stay in that wishy-washy space where you're sort of committed but not really. Because as long as you're just trying, you're not a real threat to its control over your life." On Real Power: "The power isn't in making perfect decisions. The power is in making decisions and sticking with them long enough to see what happens." Language Shifts That Change Everything Instead of: "I'm trying to eat regular meals" Decide: "I'm deciding to eat breakfast at 8am, lunch at 1pm, and dinner at 6pm, regardless of how I feel about it" Instead of: "I'm trying to be less active" Decide: "I'm deciding to take three complete rest days this week and limit exercise to 30 minutes on active days" Instead of: "I'm trying to stop weighing myself" Decide: "I'm deciding to remove the scale from my house and ask my roommate to hide it" Instead of: "I'm thinking about getting help" Decide: "I'm deciding to schedule consultation calls with three recovery coaches this week" This Week's Decision Challenge Option 1: The Immediate Action Decision Choose ONE thing you've been "trying" to do in recovery and make a definitive decision about it today. Write it down: "I am deciding to _______." Take one concrete action within 24 hours. Option 2: The Support Decision If you've been "thinking about" getting help, either decide you're going to take action and schedule consultations or decide you're not ready and stop the maybe-someday torture. Scientific Research Referenced Dr. Carol Dweck's studies on language and behavior creating neural pathways Dr. Peter Gollwitzer's research on implementation intentions (2-3x more likely to follow through) Dr. Kristin Neff's research on self-compassion and decision-making fear Ready to Stop Decision Defaulting? Listen to those three questions again - Can I Succeed? Do I Belong? Am I Loved? I'm tempted to feel those questions address the root issue of every human on earth. As I continue to research personal identity and how we as a culture seem to be more fragile and threatened than ever, I feel these questions are primary. So I had a conversation with Dr Gregory Walton. Greg is the co-director of the Dweck-Walton Labs. Dweck as in Carol Dweck, the legend of mindset. Greg is also a professor of psychology at Stanford. Much of Greg's research investigates psychological processes that contribute to major social problems. His research is supported by many foundations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As weighty as all this sounds, Greg's quest is to discover simple psychological shifts that build trust, belonging, and confidence. He's culminated his findings in a new book, titled Ordinary Magic: The Science of How We Can Achieve Big Change with Small Acts. So can addressing these huge questions be so simple? What I came to as we talked, was, yes, the answers can be simple, because they cut to the root cause issues of ourselves. But. I don't call them easy. Not at all. At the top of the show I pull this quote out from Greg, “An hour-long surgery can change your life forever. Is there any reason a precise psychological exercise can't do the same?” But going under the knife is a big decision. So is choosing to believe differently than you have. E219: Transition Rule #2 – Develop an Investment Mindset

Develop an Investment Mindset: Why This Tip Matters As a Junior Military Officer, your military experience has shaped how you think, lead, and solve problems. But when it comes to your next step, developing an investment mindset for a military transition can be just as important as your skill set. That's why Transition Tip #2 is: Develop an Investment Mindset. At Cameron-Brooks, we've seen this mindset make all the difference. It's about shifting your focus from the short-term to the long-term, from immediate comfort to future growth. In our recent episode, I sat down with Joel Junker and Tim Kirchner to dig into this idea and explain why it's so valuable. What Is an Investment Mindset? Joel explains that an investment mindset means viewing your career the same way you'd approach a financial investment. You wouldn't expect instant results from your retirement savings. Instead, you plan, stay patient, and make steady progress toward long-term returns. The same thinking applies to your career. You may need to pass on the “perfect” location or initial title if it means taking a role with greater development potential. It's about trusting the process, being intentional, and playing the long game. Why Delayed Gratification Pays Off During our conversation, Tim emphasized the importance of delayed gratification. It's tempting to focus on what feels good right now, like a higher starting salary or a shorter commute. But these short-term wins don't always lead to long-term success. Instead, think about where you want to be in five or ten years. What roles and experiences will help you get there? An investment mindset encourages you to choose a path that stretches you and helps you grow. Facing the Challenges of Transition We also discussed how the transition from the military to business can feel uncertain. The military offers structure, clarity, and control. Civilian careers often feel more open-ended. That uncertainty can trigger a need for control. Some JMOs rush into decisions simply to regain a sense of stability. However, these emotional decisions can work against your long-term goals. Joel pointed out that the key is preparation. When you understand your options, you can make confident, well-informed decisions. That lowers stress and leads to better outcomes. How to Build an Investment Mindset To help you develop this mindset, we've outlined a few practical steps: Create a long-term career plan with goals that guide your short-term decisions. Prioritize growth opportunities over short-term comforts like location or salary. Educate yourself by reading books like Mindset by Carol Dweck and The 5 Patterns of Extraordinary Careers. Work on your communication skills, including how you share your story and goals. Be open to multiple career paths, and evaluate each one objectively. Talk to mentors who can guide you through the process and offer honest advice. Reframing the Transition as an Adventure As we wrapped up, Tim encouraged JMOs to look at the transition as an adventure. This mindset adds a sense of curiosity and energy to the process. Instead of seeing the unknown as something to fear, view it as a chance to explore, grow, and discover your next chapter. Joel added that growth takes time. With a strong plan and consistent effort, the results will come. Every challenge is a step forward when you're building toward something greater. Let's Take the Next Step Together Are you ready to think long-term and approach your transition with confidence? Developing an investment mindset for your military transition is a great place to start. To learn more, check out our podcast, Cameron-Brooks: PCS to Corporate America. What are the ramifications of holding a fixed mindset over a growth mindset? How does it alter the mechanics of the people within a company and what can be done to shift an entrenched culture mindset?Mary C. Murphy is a Professor of Psychology and Brain Science at the University of Indiana, and the author of the book Cultures of Growth: How the New Science of Mindset Can Transform Individuals, Teams, and Organizations.Greg and Mary discuss the differences between growth and fixed mindsets, the significant impact of environmental factors on a given mindset, and the concept of mindset culture. Mary shares insights from her research and personal experiences, including her collaboration with Carol Dweck on the external factors influencing mindset. Their conversation covers the practical applications of growth mindset principles in education and corporate settings, how to implement effective learning systems, the role of leadership in fostering a culture of growth, and the importance of reframing effort in relation to ability. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Carol DweckJoseph AddisonVitality CurveKathleen HoganSatya NadellaGrowth Mindset vs. Fixed MindsetJean TwengeSara BlakelyYerkes–Dodson LawGuest Profile:MaryCMurphy.comFaculty Profile at the University of Indiana BloomingtonSocial Profile on InstagramSocial Profile on XHer Work:Cultures of Growth: How the New Science of Mindset Can Transform Individuals, Teams, and OrganizationsGoogle Scholar PageEpisode Quotes:Reframing effort and ability through growth mindset41:55: So, what the growth mindset culture does—and what we do when we are creating growth mindset learning environments or working environments in companies—is that we're really trying to reframe that relationship between effort and ability. Pointing out, telling stories, showing people, having them do self-reflection on where they made the most progress, right? Where do you actually see the best outcomes coming? Is it always effortless, or have there been challenges that have been overcome, strategies that had to be pivoted, and teams that had to come together, right? So, illuminating the process of success helps people understand whether or not effort is what's required for ability, required for high success, right? And strong success and excellence. Why growth cultures are more diverse and inclusive49:36: In a culture of growth, it's much more diverse naturally. Why? Because it's not about matching to some narrow prototype of success that looks or feels a certain way. Instead, it's about who can grow the most, who can develop the most, who can pivot, who's overcome challenges. And when we look at our society and look at who has overcome challenges, who has actually had to pivot, try new things, and overcome these structural barriers, we see that that's a much more diverse group of people. And it's not just focused on any one identity. And so, we see that in these cultures of growth, they attract, retain, promote, and positively evaluate a much wider variety of people. How do we mirror growth to inspire workplace success?34:50: As adults in the workplace setting, if we can create relationships where we actually show employees and our direct reports—individual contributors—where we have seen their growth and development, appreciate that, and mirror it for them, it puts them in that growth mindset. This makes them willing to try something new, to continue to push, and to continue to develop either in that area or in a new area that's required in the moment. And so, I think that's one thing that we can do pretty easily—to just be that mirror for process, growth, and development for people and help them reflect on that for themselves.

Have you ever thought, "I've tried recovery before and failed—why try again?" or "This is just who I am"? These beliefs might be the biggest barrier to lasting recovery.  In this solo episode, licensed therapist Duane Osterlind shares how a growth mindset can transform your recovery journey. Drawing from Dr. Carol Dweck's research, Duane explains how viewing your abilities and capacity for recovery as things that can grow and change (rather than fixed traits) makes all the difference.  Recovery is rarely a straight path. For many, it's a series of hopeful starts followed by setbacks. Each relapse can make doubt grow louder: "Maybe I'm not strong enough," or "Maybe I'll always be this way." These thoughts aren't just discouraging—they actively harm recovery.  When we believe change isn't possible, we avoid challenges, give up easily, and see effort as pointless. This mindset isn't just psychological—it impacts physical health, increases stress, and perpetuates addiction.  But there is another way. A growth mindset recognizes that your brain is neuroplastic—able to form new pathways throughout life. The same neuroplasticity that allowed addiction to take hold can help you build healthier habits. Through this lens, relapse becomes valuable data, not failure, offering insights about triggers and strategies for meaningful change.  Duane shares practical steps to build this mindset, like becoming aware of your self-talk, reframing challenges, embracing "the power of yet," and celebrating effort over outcomes. Miranda Barnhart Domenico, a mom of two, came to the Hoffman Process wanting to heal from a recent, painful breakup. Even before arriving at the retreat site, Miranda realized that she was coming for so much more. With two difficult relationships behind her, Miranda discovered that blaming her ex-partners wasn't helping. Instead, she found that by looking back to her childhood she could heal what was driving the difficulties in her relationships. As she joyfully recounts, Miranda was reunited with her young self at the Process. Her story gives us deep insight into the nature of negative patterns and the Negative Love Syndrome. Miranda can now talk about her painful childhood story without being nearly as triggered. From the time she was young, Miranda had lived her life disconnected from both her emotional self and her Spiritual Self. Learning about the Quadrinity reconnected Miranda back to her Spirit and her emotions. Now, one of the most important things she wants to impart to her daughters is the understanding that feeling, and talking about, their emotions is vital to healthy relating. We hope you enjoy this powerful Love's Everyday Raidus conversation with Miranda and Drew. More about Miranda Barnhart Domenico: Miranda Barnhart Domenico, a mom of two, moved to Colorado, on her own, directly after high school, balancing college and work while building a tech career. She embraced travel, outdoor adventures, and her career until building a family shifted her focus in her 30s.   Though Miranda stepped back from some of the outdoor pursuits she loved, her dedication to being an athlete, an exceptional mom, and a driven professional never wavered.  She hadn't realized that she wasn't doing any of those three things wholly as she had fallen prey to trying to master all three without emotion and a deeper purpose. It wasn't until Miranda's divorce and other personal challenges led her to the Hoffman Process in 2019, that she rediscovered her authentic self.  Now, she leads with vulnerability, inspiring others through connection. Once ultra-independent, Miranda channels that strength into leadership, mentoring at work, coaching young athletes, and finding purpose in empowering others.  Her mission is clear: to show up authentically and create spaces where others feel inspired to do the same. Quarterly realignment stands as the defining difference between simply getting by and strategically maximizing your potential. This powerful practice — a deliberate pause to reflect, recalibrate, and refine your approach — creates clarity that fuels remarkable results in your business and leadership journey.Have you ever found yourself thinking, "It worked so well, why did I stop doing it"? This common pattern affects even the most disciplined professionals. Perhaps you were consistently asking for referrals with great success until, somewhere along the way, you simply stopped. Or, maybe your productive morning routine gradually disappeared when things got busy. Realignment ensures you recognize what's working and intentionally continue these success-driving behaviors instead of letting them silently slip away.Beyond maintaining effective habits, quarterly realignment sharpens your ability to spot inefficiencies and proactively address challenges before they derail your progress. It provides the space to analyze where your efforts yield the greatest results, allowing you to work smarter rather than harder. For those feeling behind or discouraged, realignment offers something even more valuable — the chance to identify what's truly holding you back, whether it's mindset, process, or skillset barriers. The mindset component proves particularly critical. Carol Dweck's research on fixed versus growth mindset reminds us that how we view challenges directly impacts our success and resilience. When facing setbacks, do you tell yourself "I'm too far behind" or rather reframe this with "What's one small step I can take today?" Your narrative either creates roadblocks or pathways to achievement.Ready to make your next quarter your strongest yet? Schedule your quarterly review now and remember, you're not behind — you're exactly where you need to be to create the results you want.
