Focusing On What Really Matters When you don't have enough time, what's the first thing that gets cut from your schedule? Now, of course, the answer is “it depends.” But I asked this question recently on LinkedIn and got a flood of responses. The most common category was self-care: exercising, sleeping, even eating. Two other big categories were time with others and time to think. Maybe you can relate to these. Left to my own devices, I sure can. But when you think about it, you would never design your life that way, right? Each of those represents areas that are critical to our success. And I'm not just talking about success with our projects or at work. If we're not taking care of ourselves, taking time to think and reflect, and investing in others, it impacts nearly every dimension of life. And it can lead us to hitting a birthday and wondering, how did I get here? If that sounds like a depressing start to this episode, I have good news. I'm joined today by the author of one of my favorite new books. Cassie Holmes joins us to discuss her book Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most. What I expected to be just another time management guide turns out to be a book on happiness that I consider a must-read. Learn more about Cassie and her book at CassieMHolmes.com/. For more episodes related to focusing on what matters most, check out these episodes: Episode 174, with Amy Blankson about her book The Future of Happiness. Episode 136, with Michele Geilen about her book Broadcasting Happiness. Episode 309, with Ashley Whillans about her book Time Smart. Did you know that heintz the ketchup once came out with purple ketchup? Or that Bic actually tried to market a pen for women only . . .the big difference was that it was pink. Neither of these products worked – purple ketchup looks like a monster barfed on your fries and well, never in the history of writing has a woman run around the house screaming, I can't possibly write that letter – I can't find my lady pen. These are examples from the Museum of Failure, and this week we're talking about how to recover from mistakes, and while companies may be able to move on from their mistakes by tossing a little money at them, it's a little harder for us. My tip today is to change your Flash Memory about the mistake. In her book Broadcasting Happiness, Michele Gielen says flash memories are those feeling we have when we walk into a similar situation. So if for example, if I have a bad show in a bar, then the next time I walk into a bar for a show, I'll feel bad about it. She says there are 3 things you have to do to change those memories. I'm paraphrasing here, but the 3 things are – focus on the times you did well in that situation, create a feeling of succeeding in that situation so that you really feel it, and do this many times, not just once. She says then you'll re-write your flash memory about the experience. Try it! And Yes, there really is a traveling exhibit titled the museum of failure – check to see if it's coming to your town. And check out my website www.TheWorkLady.com – I probably have some mistakes on there. . see if you can find 'em. That's it for today. Take care and enjoy your journey.

David covers the first full chapter of Broadcasting Happiness. While he finds a lot of the chapter to be almost a second introduction, there are some interesting scientific, psychological studies that spark introspective thought. David relates some concepts to fictional examples like Of Mice and Men and draws a parallel to The Concession Counter's review of The Conjuring. Ultimately, he finds that the book is likely going to press his thoughts on perception as reality. Some of the skepticism has dropped, and we're ready to dive in deep after this episode of The People vs Happiness.Oh, and don't forget, do what makes you happy.Submit your comments and topic ideas to become a part of the show!Follow us on Facebook to get show updates: http://www.facebook.com/thepeoplevshappinessDo the same on Instagram @thepeoplevshappinessReach out to us on Twitter: @TPvHpodcastEmail us at thepeoplevshappiness@gmail.comThe People vs Happiness Theme by Steve Ganoung Music: “Something Elated“ by Broke for FreeFrom the Free Music ArchiveCC BY SA

These days, when we open the news, all we see are the negative things happening around. We are exposed to these things every single minute that it becomes harder to find happiness. Will there be a way to look at these challenges in our lives that leaves us feeling empowered, ready to take action, and overcome them? Bestselling author and founder of the Institute for Applied Positive Research, Michelle Gielan, knows the answer. Through her book, Broadcasting Happiness, she talks about how we can continually transmit information that influences other people, highlighting the importance on our part to be a positive influence on others. Michelle also defines rational optimism while stating some great research on how we can harness the feel-good hormones in our body. Chris Majer, CEO of the Human Potential Project, shares the beauty of consistency and resilience to continue to persevere in life. When the world seems like a repetition of the same failures and disappointments, it takes that desire to start again that will eventually lead us to winning on top of finding our true potential. Chris gets down into the type of learning we should aim for with the understanding that competence is produced not in mere motivation alone, but in practice. He sheds some light into what we can learn from athletes as well as how we can carry ourselves throughout the entire process of being learners. Love the show? In this episode of FEAR NOT author of Broadcasting Happiness, Michelle Gielan discusses her research into the psychology into happiness.
Michelle Gielan, a national CBS News anchor turned UPenn positive psychology researcher, is the bestselling author of Broadcasting Happiness. She is partnered with Arianna Huffington to research how transformative stories fuel success.
Former TV personality of KUSI in San Diego, Brad Perry, tosses in the towel and begins a new chapter in his journey to happiness. He discusses the power of living in the present, not in the past and not in the future, and what opened his eyes to walk away from a successful career. Being a well-known broadcaster was not all that it seemed for Brad Perry. He explains how easy it became for him to dwell on the past and stress about the future. Brad believes that the biggest problem for most people is looking too much at what those around us have and stressing when we lack it. Brad Perry believes that the power of living in the now is a significant key to happiness. Brad believed that working hard, going to church, being nice to others, and eating healthy were the right things to do and that by doing them, he was serving as a good role model to his children. After reading a book that his daughter gifted him his journey was set in motion. Then when his son pointed out some of Brad's personal actions, he decided to do better for his kids, and do some real soul searching. According to Brad, people often struggle with focusing on the past and not living in the present. He states that people walk through many doors in life and that, “when they're bad doors, we blame it on somebody else, and when they're good doors, we say it's, ‘oh I'm lucky'… these doors are meant to be open for you.” He speaks about the life and career he had successfully chosen, but how it was taking him to become a bitter Brad. The negative news he was reporting in his profession began to take a toll on his soul until he decided enough was enough. Brad made a decision to take responsibility for his life, and not knowing what lie ahead, he walked through a new door to a new journey. Brad quit KUSI and decided to focus on the power of the present. He did not have another career lined up or savings tucked away, but in doing so, he began to do things that made him happy. Brad now dedicates his days to working out, staying healthy, and he continues to read. He discusses three books that were significant in this transition and how they taught him to live in the present, and stop being his own worst enemy. The books Brad owes his new knowledge to are: “The Power of Now,” “The Voice of Knowledge,” and “Broadcasting Happiness.” In this new journey, Brad Perry hopes to inspire other men to focus on the power of the present. He believes that men need more positivity in their lives, and that it is crucial they learn to take responsibility for themselves. Brad's biggest emotional impact from this journey has been taking responsibility for his own actions. He now wakes up every day being thankful, being a better person, and having love for himself. Michelle Gielan is a researcher and bestselling author of Broadcasting Happiness. With experience as a TV national news anchor at CBS, Michelle believes that by helping to make others happier and more successful, we feel happier too. She says, we’ve all been told countless times "You can't change other people." But this societal belief is not only dis-empowering, it is, perhaps surprisingly, scientifically false. Michelle and her husband Shawn Achor are partnering with PBS for an 'Inspire Happiness' television special to be aired this December and continuing in 2017. Contact Info Website: www.BroadcastingHappiness.com Go to www.BroadcastingHappiness.com to find a 30 Question Assessment called the Success Scale Most Influential Person My husband, Shawn Achor Effect on Emotions The biggest thing I've learned over the last decade is how to be mindful about an emotion I'm experiencing, not judge it and just let it pass through me, especially if it's negative, as opposed to fighting it or fleeing it in the moment and exacerbating the response to it. Thoughts on Breathing When it comes to meditating, that is my mindfulness meditation practice. I've tried to develop an awareness when I am holding my breath in tighter and my body is responding that way. Sometimes all it takes to relax is two breaths and everything changes. Suggested Resources Book: Broadcasting Happiness by Michelle Gielan Book: Ripples Effect by Shawn Achor & Amy Blankson (A Children's Book about bullying and how to overcome it with a positive mindset and a smile. App: Muse (Goes along with Headband) TV Special: Inspire Happiness (currently airing on PBS Mindfulness Meets Bullying Story For a long time I was working with an organization called 'Living Values' and what they try to do is bring into a school community, the values the students and teachers have identified are important to them and bring it into the curriculum in many different ways so that it is top of mind. Values like passion, kindness and open expressivity. Values that, when they're fully expressed and the community is fully living them, it decreases the incidence of bullying. The story from my time doing this work was originally there was this one school and the kids were getting in fights on the playground and it was a little bit rough and tumble and there was definitely bullying going on there. They decided to empower some of the older children with armbands and the ability to get kids of all ages to sit down and talk through the challenges. They gave them the communication tools and the power to do that. It was remarkable. If two third graders were fighter over a ball and being mean about it, they could go and sit with the older student and they could talk it through. Not only did incidents of bullying significantly decrease, but also the kids got along so much better outside of the playground, in the other moments, in the classroom that social coercion went up. We sometimes find that it's the small changes that have the biggest effect. More Mindfulness Nuggets The 'Inspire Happiness' TV Special Includes: Three Ways We Can Positively Influence Others:1/ Broadcast an optimist mindset! In the face of challenges, do you expect good things to happen & do you believe that your behaviour matters? 2/ How do you view a stressful event? Is it stress, where your brain goes into fight or flight or is it a challenge where you think, we can overcome this challenge? 3/ How much value do we put on supporting the people around us? Are we there to be linked up with them and to support them through challenges? We find that when managers start to follow the above three guidelines, they are able to increase productive energy of their entire team by 31% in just three weeks. It’s amazing to see that these small changes can have significant impacts. Three minutes of negative news in the morning can lead to a 27% higher likelihood of reporting your day as unhappy, as reported six to eight hours later. (Study done with Ariana Huffington and Shawn Achor)
