What's going on family!?! A quick Change the Channel today to remember the senseless murder of 17 year old Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman. It was on July 13, 2013 that Zimmerman was acquitted and we all were reminded that walking home while black was STILL a crime in America. So today on the 5 year anniversary of this event, I just wanted to briefly touch on the life and times of Zimmerman since. And remember, that at the time of his murder, many referred to young Trayvon as a thug. Geraldo Rivera was famously quoted as saying, "If you dress like a thug, you'll be treated like a thug." My Pops was born March 23, 1960 and we lost him to that bitch named cancer on November 3, 2014. My father would have been 58 today. And ever since losing Pops, every birthday, every Father's Day and every anniversary of his passing, I make sure to have a steak dinner, a shot and a movie with the old man. So this time I decided to take a moment to celebrate his life and talk about a couple of issues regarding this. First and foremost, I wanted to highlight the importance of growing up with your father. There is nothing that can replace the love of a father growing up as a young man in the city. I am so thankful to have a father in an era and a time where it was unpopular to be a father and be in your child's life. Another subject that I wanted to touch on is dealing with the mental health aspects of losing a loved one. Often we lose someone close to us and just try to deal with it on our own and without any help. Not realizing that we could be a lot more affected than we know.
