About A Whisper in the Dark Sarah Parker thinks she has found the perfect place for a fresh start when she moves her family from the Midwest to a sleepy suburban neighborhood in an idyllic southern town. Leaving a position as a serious journalist to write fluff pieces for a local paper is a compromise she is willing to make to escape the past and rebuild her family. Ten years earlier, Ben and Mary moved to the same neighborhood in search of their own fresh start, leaving a trail of death and disfigurement in their wake. Now that cancer has taken Mary, a blossoming friendship with the Parker family offers Ben a glimpse of the things he missed out on and the child he and Mary were denied. As he questions the sacrifices he made to be with Mary and the evil he harbored to protect her, that evil has set its sights on Sarah's eleven-year-old son, Sam, putting the entire town in danger. About Elizabeth Devecchi Elizabeth Devecchi spent most of her formative years in the tiny state of Rhode Island, striking out after high school to gather degrees while exploring the world. This has resulted in an undergraduate degree in French from Wittenberg University, polished during a year abroad in Montpelier, France; an Italian Law Degree from the Università di Torino, Italy; an L.LM in International Law bestowed by The University of Iowa; and formal Mediation training. When she started her hobby blog, The Moon, The Sun, and Little Man (since incorporated into her author website), Elizabeth knew she wanted to get back to one of her earliest passions: writing. She officially began her career as an author in her in her early 50s with a short story titled “The Hunt,” which can still be found floating around the internet as part of the December 2021 issue of international literary journal, Ariel Chart. Rundown -   Intro - 00:35   Beth McCann in the Inner Sanctum of Craig's Lawyers' Lounge - 08:07   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:25:32   "Some Days" by Dave Gunders - 01:28:04   Outro - 01:33:35   Denver District Attorney Beth McCann makes a historic trip into the Inner Sanctum of Craig's Lawyers' Lounge. She's about to conclude two terms and will be stepping off the public stage, but not without some public expressions, as you will hear.   Beth McCann is a trailblazing figure in Denver's legal landscape. She was sworn in as the city's first female District Attorney on January 10, 2017. Her journey to this historic position reflects groundbreaking achievements and a commitment to public service.   McCann spent her childhood moving frequently due to her father's career as an Army colonel, including stints in Japan and Taiwan. Inspired by feminist role models, she pursued higher education to establish a career. McCann graduated magna cum laude from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.   Former President Trump is now stirring up hate against lawful Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, and he's telling lies about Aurora, Colorado. McCann assures us that Denver law enforcement will be ready if Trump comes to our neighboring city of Aurora.   Like California AG-Elect Kamala Harris, who was also elected on the first Tuesday of November 2016, Denver DA-Elect Beth McCann felt queasy about our country despite achieving her lifetime pinnacle job. Eight years later, Beth McCann voluntarily surrendered power to her successor, John Walsh (Ep 193), whom she endorsed.    McCann's legal journey began at Georgetown University Law School in 1971, where she was one of only a handful of women in her class. After graduating in 1974, she moved to Denver, becoming only the second female law clerk for Colorado's U.S. District Court Judge Sherman G. Finesilver.   McCann served as a deputy and then Chief Deputy District Attorney in Denver from 1975 to 1982, prosecuting hundreds of cases. In the early 1990s, McCann became Denver's first female Manager of Safety under Mayor Wellington Webb.   For eight years, McCann served as Deputy Attorney General for Civil Litigation and Employment Law for the Colorado Attorney General's Office. McCann was also a four-term elected state representative for HD 8 in Denver, focusing on criminal justice matters and health care reform.   McCann has long been a strong advocate for women in the legal profession. She is a founding member and former president of the Colorado Women's Bar Association, and she explains why most of her new hires are female prosecutors.   Kamala Harris's virtues as a fellow big-city prosecutor are extolled. Beth and Kamala have inevitably faced specific difficult everyday top prosecutor experiences. We agree that Tim Walz is a fine man and educator. We talk with Denver DA McCann about character and leadership.   McCann explains her recent decision no charges will be filed in connection with a deadly shooting in July at an apartment near the University of Denver. https://www.9news.com/article/news/local/du-apartment-intruder-shot-killed/73-a62f1a45-d7ce-49ed-a055-907d65887ed5   According to Denver Police, a resident returned to their apartment inside One Observatory Park around 1 a.m. on  July 21 and was startled by an intruder. The apartment building is on East Evans Avenue, just east of South University Boulevard.   We discuss how Kamala Harris said she'd shoot any intruder into her family home. Beth McCann explains the burden of proof on prosecutors and how she's made thousands of such decisions. https://people.com/kamala-harris-tells-oprah-intruder-getting-shot-if-try-to-break-in-8716045   Show Troubadour Dave Gunders plays hurt, coming off the recovery table from knee replacement surgery and offering his toe-tapping song "Some Days." Some days this week started off bad for NC Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who had nasty laundry exposed. It could not happen in a better swing state.   The host starts the show by decrying Trump's blaming of the Jews in case he does not get elected. Is he talking to Craig? It appears so. What's he going to do about it? Have friends extract retribution? WTF. Kamala continues to be calm and bright. This episode is hopeful.

In the week since the presidential debate, former President Donald Trump's lies about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, have sown chaos in the small city. Members of the Proud Boys, a right-wing extremist group, started showing up. Republican Gov. Mike DeWine said more than 30 fake bomb threats have been called in, forcing schools, government buildings and stores to close temporarily. Dr. Robert Baker, a political science professor at Springfield's Wittenberg University, talks about how Trump's debate comment is disrupting life in the city. Later, Miami Herald Caribbean correspondent Jacqueline Charles talks about how the situation on the ground in Haiti is driving people out of the country. And in headlines: House Speaker Mike Johnson failed to rally his conference to pass a spending bill to avoid a government shutdown, the U.S. Justice Department filed a $100 million legal claim against the owner and operator of the cargo ship that destroyed the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, and Kentucky Democratic Gov. In his latest IngenioUs Blog--University Design article, David J. Staley discusses the trend in higher education of prioritizing programs over faculty-student relationships. Highlighting the case of Wittenberg University, which plans to rely more on online course sharing and outside partners for student instruction, Staley questions the effectiveness of this approach and argues for the importance of faculty-student relationships in learning, belonging, and persistence. He explores the investment in sports infrastructure at Wittenberg and the potential transformation of liberal arts colleges into sports clubs. and concludes by emphasizing the need to elevate human relationships and social capital in enrollment management strategies. Keywords: higher education, faculty-student relationships, programs, online learning, liberal arts colleges, sports infrastructure, enrollment management Takeaways: The trend in higher education of prioritizing programs over faculty-student relationships may have negative consequences for learning and student success. Investing in faculty-student relationships and social capital can be a more effective enrollment management strategy than focusing solely on programs. The transformation of liberal arts colleges into sports clubs raises questions about the core mission of higher education institutions. Highlighting the stories of faculty and staff and their relationships with students can be a powerful tool in enrollment management. Sound Bites: "Imagine a college website where faculty were foregrounded ahead of programs." "We are moving from a student-faculty relationship to an athlete-coach relationship." In May of 1983, the world of synthesizers and electronic music as we knew it would change forever with the launch of the Yamaha DX7. To celebrate 40 years since its launch, Rob Puricelli spoke to Dr John Chowning, the developer of FM synthesis, Dave Bristow and Gary Leuenberger, sound designers for the original DX7 and Manny Fernandez, who has worked on all Yamaha's FM projects from the Mk.II DX7 through to today's Montage M series.See the Show Notes for further details.Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:55 - First Experiences Of The DX712:49 - Did The DX7 Meet Expectations?16:57 - The Feedback Loop17:51 - Creating And Sharing Sounds22:47 - A Career From Creating Patches27:55 - Sound Design Using FM31:36 - Hearing Your Own Sounds34:26 - Working With Don Lewis44:26 - Demonstrating The DX757:00 - FM Synthesis 40 Years On01:07:12 - Formant Shaping And The Future Of FMDr John Chowning BiogBorn in Salem, New Jersey in 1934, John Chowning spent his school years in Wilmington, Delaware. Following military service and four years at Wittenberg University in Ohio, he studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He received a doctorate in composition (DMA) from Stanford University in 1966, where he studied with Leland Smith. Chowning discovered the frequency modulation synthesis (FM) algorithm in 1967. This breakthrough in the synthesis of timbres allowed a very simple yet elegant way of creating and controlling time-varying spectra. In 1973 Stanford University licensed the FM synthesis patent to Yamaha in Japan, leading to the most successful synthesis engine in the history of electronic musical instruments. He taught computer sound synthesis and composition at Stanford University's Department of Music. In 1974, with John Grey, James (Andy) Moorer, Loren Rush and Leland Smith, he founded the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), which remains one of the leading centres for computer music and related research. Although he retired in 1996, he has remained in contact with CCRMA activities.Chowning was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988 and awarded the Honorary Doctor of Music by Wittenberg University in 1990. The French Ministre de la Culture awarded him the Diplôme d'Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1995. He was given the Doctorat Honoris Causa in 2002 by the Université de la Méditerranée, by Queen's University in 2010, Hamburg University in 2016, and Laureate of the Giga-Hertz-Award in 2013.Dave Bristow BiogDave was born in London and worked as a professional keyboard player recording and touring internationally with a variety of artists including Polyphony, Slender Loris, June Tabor, Tallis and 2nd Vision. Active in synthesizer development, he played a central role in voicing the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and is internationally recognized as one of the important contributors to the development and voicing of FM synthesis, co-authoring a textbook on the subject with Dr John Chowning. He spent three years at IRCAM in Paris, running a MIDI and synthesis studio working with contemporary music composers and artists, then moving to the United States in the 1990's to work for Emu Systems, Inc. on sampling and filter-based synthesizers. In 2002, he began working again with Yamaha developing ringtones and system alert sounds for the SMAF audio chip series used in cell phones and mobile devices. He has been an instructor at Shoreline Community College teaching electronic music production and synthesis for ten years, but still finds plenty of time for composing and playing piano with RedShift jazz quartet and developing his interest in computer arts.Gary Leuenberger BiogGary started in music at a young age and, in 1975, founded G. Leuenberger & Co. in San Francisco. It soon became one of the world's largest retailers of pianos, synthesizers and electronic keyboards. In 1980 he started working with Yamaha as part of their product development team. It was through this that he was recruited, along with the likes of Dave Bristow and Don Lewis, to create the factory presets for the DX7. Gary's most famous, or infamous, patch was the legendary E.Piano 1 which became equally one of the most popular and despised sounds ever! Nevertheless, his association with Yamaha continued until 2000, at which point Gary went back into education, gaining his Bachelors of Music and Masters in Classical Piano Performance from San Francisco State University in 2007.Since then, he has taught electronic music at SFSU and gives private tutoring to budding musicians of all ages. Manny Fernandez BiogDr. Manny Fernandez has been involved in synthesizer programming and development with many manufacturers for over 35 years. Initially self-taught prior to traditional university study of analogue synthesis, in the late 1970's - early 1980's the emerging digital synthesis techniques caught his attention with their expanded timbral possibilities. He acquired a DX7 in the fall of 1983 and using Dr. Chowning's original academic articles as a guide began exploring FM synthesis in depth. In 1987 he began his relationship with Yamaha, programming for a wide range of their synthesizers through the years to the current Montage M. Acknowledged as one of the world's foremost FM synthesists and having extensive experience with physical modelling synthesis as well, his programming approach is to create unique and dynamic timbres with interesting yet useful real-time controller implementations.Rob Puricelli BiogRob Puricelli is a Music Technologist and Instructional Designer who has a healthy obsession with classic synthesizers and their history. In conjunction with former Fairlight Studio Manager, Peter Wielk, he fixes and restores Fairlight CMI's so that they can enjoy prolonged and productive lives with new owners. He also writes reviews and articles for Sound On Sound, his website Failed Muso, and other music-related publications, as well as hosting a weekly livestream on YouTube for the Pro Synth Network and guesting on numerous music technology podcasts and shows. He also works alongside a number of manufacturers, demonstrating their products and lecturing at various educational and vocational establishments about music technology.www.failedmuso.comTwitter: @failedmusoInstagram: @failedmusoFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/failedmuso/

Like most urban communities around the United States, Gary, IN is rich in culture and diversity.  According to a recent count, Gary's population consists of nearly 76,000 citizens, with African Americans representing the highest ethnicity at 78%.  Having such a decisive edge compared to other races, the Black experience in Gary is defined by hard work, resilience, and durability.  Like most urban communities, Gary has seen its share of crime and violence, and during the 1990s, it was once labeled as one of Indiana's most dangerous places to live.  Fast forward to 2022, that stigma has faded away, and Gary's identity is being rebuilt by those who believe that its greatest days are within distance.  That is the story of Michael and Shelice Tolbert of Tolbert & Tolbert Attorneys at Law.  True to their roots, they are building one of Indiana's top law firms in the heart of Gary.  Having their practice based in Gary, Indiana, is critically important to this power couple.   Michael and Shelice have enjoyed 15 years of marriage.  Their union appears to be almost purposeful.  They both pursued careers to practice law.  Michael received his formal education in the Gary, IN, public school system.  He later attended and graduated from Valparaiso University as an undergraduate and Valparaiso University School of Law.  He is a believer and faith-based individual and professes that nothing in his life would be possible without God. Shelice was also formally educated in the Gary public school system and later attended Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH.  After graduating from there, she came back to Gary and “followed” Michael to Valparaiso School of Law.  She describes herself as a family-oriented, homebody, down-to-earth type of person who desires to help others.    Tolbert & Tolbert Attorneys at Law opened their doors to the public on January 26, 2015.  However, Shelice says the idea to open the firm was conceptualized many years before that.  Michael says they like to describe themselves as a litigation boutique, meaning they do complex litigation for individuals, cities, towns, municipalities, and higher exposure litigation matters, involving millions of dollars hanging in the balance.  Often, companies engaged in complex litigation matters will hire them to help guide them through the process.  However, they do not do any family law or criminal cases.  Additionally, Michael is a certified mediator, a resource their firm utilizes for Alternative Dispute Resolutions.   Michael and Shelice are proud to share that Tolbert & Tolbert is a Christian-based firm.  “We openly pray in our office.  We have scripture everywhere,” he says.  Their mission statement is Christian-based as well.  “Our mission is to honor God by rendering compassionate litigation services to businesses, organizations, and individuals”.  Michael says their mission statement is placed in two strategic places in their office; one at the front of the office and the other at the back door.  “It's the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see before you leave.  It's a constant reminder of who your source is, which is God and not man.  That inspires me, knowing that I have a God who has blessed me enough to have a wife and family who cares about me and be able to have a successful business and help people in our community.  We are doing what we love in a community that we love and loves us back. For those who may follow in their footsteps, the Tolberts offer some advice.  “Always believe in something.  Pray to God for what you want and speak what you want.  Be positive and stay encouraged.  Just because there is a bump in the road, or things are not happening the way you would like for them to, “it doesn't mean that it's not meant for you.  Stay the course and persevere.  Things will get hard sometimes, but if they weren't hard, everyone would be doing it,” they shared.   To learn more about Tolbert & Tolbert Attorneys At Law, please visit their website at www.tolbertlegal.com To learn more about Huami Magazine, you may follow us on Facebook and Instagram by putting Huami Magazine in your search box.  You may also visit our website at www.huamimagazine.com You may follow This Is Who I Am Podcast on Facebook and Instagram by putting This Is Who I Am in your search box,.

Coach Drew is in year one with Coach Heath at EMU. Coach Denisco knew that he would coach the game of basketball at the age of ten. After one season of playing at Wittenberg University, Coach Drew started his college coaching journey as a student assistant coach at the age of nineteen. As you soon will find out this is a podcast about finding your niche and working so hard in your niche that the people around you - ultimately go to bat for you. After a graduate year at Cleveland State, it is at the University of Akron for Coach Keith Dambrot where Drew became enamored with his niche: video. After his tenure with Akron, Drew went to the Cleveland Cavaliers to work in their video department. For three seasons, Drew's basketball mind expanded learning under three NBA coaches. In addition, with the Cavs, Coach Denisco rolled up his sleeves and worked. Sleeping four nights a week in the Cavs practice facility became the norm for Drew. Quite simply, his goal was to make sure the Cavs staff had all the necessary video breakdowns on the desk, as soon as they entered the building in the morning. In addition, Drew never left the court until the last Cavs player was finished - getting the extra shots they needed. Oh, by the way, Coach Drew shares an incredible LeBron James story in the podcast. How Coach Denisco got to Michigan State and Coach Tom Izzo's program is a complete must-listen for young coaches looking to make the climb in this profession. You are going to learn the power of the recommendation and Coach Drew shares some examples from his past interviews. Finally, as much as Coach Drew carved his way in this profession, this is a conversation about a young coach who was ready to be a coach when he received his shot at EMU. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Jue Liang about her beginnings as a scholar of Tibetan Buddhism, the life of the Tibetan saint Yeshe Tsogyal, and the broader topic of women in Buddhism. How should we think about the place of women in Buddhist philosophy, narrative, and practice? How do scholars attempt to recover the lives of women who are often forgotten in Buddhist history? And how does thinking with and about gender help us—whatever our gender—understand Buddhism? We also preview her upcoming online course, BSO 105 | Women and Buddhism, which will explore these issues in more depth! Speaker BioDr. Jue Liang is a scholar of Tibetan Buddhist literature, history, and culture, and is Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Denison University  and incoming Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Wittenberg University in Fall 2022. She received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia. Her dissertation, Conceiving the Mother of Tibet: The Life, Lives, and Afterlife of the Buddhist Saint Yeshe Tsogyel, examines the literary tradition surrounding the matron saint of Tibet, Yeshe Tsogyel, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It also presents the blossoming of this literary tradition in tandem with the efforts to trace their religious pedigree and define what counts as authentic Buddhism by Nyingma Tibetan Buddhists. She is currently working on a second book project titled Who Is a Buddhist Feminist: Theorizing Gender and Religion in Contemporary Tibet. It is a study on the history, discourse, and social effects of the khenmo program, a gender-equality initiative that has been taking place at Tibetan Buddhist institutions in China for the past three decades. From a very young age, Ellen Boeder had big questions about our collective connectivity and she wanted to fully understand the relationship with herself and with others. At the age of 14, in her first week of high school, she was introduced to a therapist who visited her health class, and it was then that she knew psychology (and personal growth) was the path for her.Fast forward to her first 'real' experience in the field, as a volunteer at a women's prison, Ellen taught creative writing to inmates as a form of therapy and healing. This was the very first time that she had experienced a group of people who were trying to piece their lives back together after immense traumas and hardship. The writing was an exercise in putting all the pieces back together. She recounts what an honor and privilege it was to be trusted and "let in" by these women to help transform their lives. And found a powerful life force watching these women pursue and accomplish amazing things from the darkest of places.Today, after nearly 20 years as a psychotherapist, Ellen is focused on helping women and couples via relationship therapy and couples coaching.
