When it comes to the murder case of United Healthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, what was the real motive? What actually caused murder suspect Luigi Mangione to carry out this murder? Was it denied insurance claims for a suspected back condition? Was it a mental health condition or a combination of both? We discussed what the real motive could have been with Dr. Robert Bransfield and Dr. Al Miller.Ask Alexa to play WBZ NewsRadio on #iHeartRadio and listen to NightSide with Dan Rea Weeknights From 8PM-12AM!
The word hokum originated in vaudeville to mean a risqué performance laced with wordplay, euphemisms and double entendre. When it appeared on the label of a 1928 hit for Vocalion Records by a new group called Tampa Red's Hokum Jug Band, the term rapidly entered the jazzy lexicon of The Roarin' Twenties. When the group moved on to Paramount Records as The Famous Hokum Boys, it quickly picked up imitators at other studios, often using variations on the same word in their own names. Eventually “hokum” came to describe an entire species of novelty tunes, all those sexy, silly blues of the 1920s and '30s.About Tampa RedHokum's first star, Tampa Red, was one of the most prolific blues artists of his era, recording some 335 songs, 75 percent between 1928 and 1942. Tampa Red was born Hudson Woodbridge in Smithville, Georgia, near Albany in the first decade of the 20th century. When their parents died, he and his older brother Eddie moved to Tampa, Florida, to be reared by their aunt and their grandmother. There he also adopted their surname, Whittaker.Emulating Eddie, Hudson Whittaker played guitar around the Tampa area, especially inspired by an old street musician called Piccolo Pete, who taught the youngster his first blues licks. After perfecting a slide guitar technique, he moved to Chicago in 1925 and began working as a street musician himself. He took the name "Tampa Red" to celebrate to his childhood home.Enter TomRed's big break came when he was hired to accompany established blues star Ma Rainey. There he also met pianist/composer Thomas A. Dorsey, who as working as “Georgia Tom.” Red and Tom became fast friends and music partners.Tom introduced Red to records exec J. Mayo Williams, who arranged a studio session in 1928. Their first effort was a dud, but their next song — the cheeky “It's Tight Like That” — became a national sensation, selling a million copies. Red later recalled seeing people standing outside of record stores just waiting to buy the disc. Since the song was composed by both Red and Tom, they shared $4,000 in royalties from that single song. (That would be about $75,000 today.)While his partnership with Dorsey ended in 1932, Red remained much in demand in recording studios throughout the ‘30s and ‘40s. He was later "rediscovered" in the blues revival of the late 1950s, along with other early blues artists, like Son House and Skip James. Red made his last recordings in 1960.About the SongTampa Red recorded “Somebody's Been Using That Thing” in 1934, but unlike so many of the tunes he waxxed, he didn't write this one.Instead, the song was composed and recorded five years earlier by a curious genre-blending mandolinist named Al Miller.Starting in 1927, Miller played and sang in a style that combined elements of country, blues and jazz on sides for Black Patti records. His eclectic mix of sounds and material gave way to a heavy concentration on bawdry once he arrived at Brunswick for a series of recordings with his Market Street Boys. Miller recorded his “Somebody's Been Using That Thing” on March 8, 1929. It was his big seller. Five years later, after Tampa Red also scored with it, the song even started attracting the attention of artists in the fledgling country and western genre. In 1937, for instance, Milton Brown, called by some “the father of Western swing,” did a rendition for Decca. The following year, The Callahan Brothers (Walter and Homer) of Madison County, Ky., recorded it on the Conqueror label. Our Take on the TuneIf there's such a thing as a "standard" in jug band music, ”Somebody's Been Using That Thing” is certainly one of them. While The Flood's heroes recorded it 90 years ago, the band didn't get around to doing it until back in 2009 when Joe Dobbs recommended it. That was right after he received a recording of it by our old buddy, Ed Light, and his DC-area band with one great name: The All New Genetically Altered Jug Band. We've been Floodifying the tune ever since, as this track from a recent rehearsal demonstrates. This is a public episode. Al Miller, NFL LEGENDARY STRENGTH COACH, joined Coach C to talk Strength and Conditioning, LIFE & FAITH!
Why does God allow us to suffer? The Bible teaches that God is sovereign. He is Lord. He has all authority, total control, and is completely aware of everything that happens in the universe. Furthermore, He is good, and He loves us. If you're a Christian you believe all these truths about God. But if you're like me, you have also experienced great suffering in your life. And this isn't just true about you and me. It's true of every person who has ever lived. That means if we are suffering, God knows about it. And He is powerful enough to stop it. So, God is sovereign. God is good. And God allows us to suffer. Often, excruciatingly. How do we fit these truths together? That's what we're talking about in this episode. Questions we'll answer today include: What diagnosis did Al receive? And who started making funeral arrangements after receiving it? What was it like getting a lifesaving transplant? How Al's attitude toward suffering—and God— radically changed. What advice Al has for other Christian fathers, and the four lessons his suffering has taught him. –--

Producer's Pick is a bonus episode. In it we dissect the line of a movie, song, quote, social media post, Scripture, or topic you suggest. However for today's episode my producer and I chose the topic. Episode Summary Today's episode is Part 2 of a 2 part episode. I speak with Al Miller, my Pastor, Spiritual Authority and Mentor. He continues the discussion on 'What It Really Means To Be Single', explaining that singleness is not about being in a relationship but about character, personality, attitude. He gives us tips on how to achieve our singleness. He explains that someone who is single is upright, balanced internally and demonstrates that their mind, will and emotions are consistent with their Spirit. Key Takeaways Singleness means being separate and distinguishable from someone else and being able to function separately (5:58) Singleness is not about being independent and not needing anyone (11:44) Singleness, after childhood, is the next period of your life that is the most important and significant (27:33) When choosing a mate, choose one that is single, alone and recognizes he needs support for the bigger vision (17:07) Determine what common goals you will have before coming together (19:53) Singleness is the most important time in life that must be maximized (28:43) To truly become single know your identity, draw close to God, deal with your flaws and wounds, and get a vision for your life (30:05) Top Quotes These are what you have to bring in balance to become single...a good attitude, have got character, integrity...and a personality that can relate and win some people (3:15) In a world of relational beings, we need each other to fulfill the common goal of life (13:34) You want to make sure that the man is single and alone but he no longer desires to be alone...because if he doesn't recognize that and you come alongside such a person, you are going to be abused (17:14) So that even when the two of us decide to come together, we are coming together for a purpose (22:05) You certainly need to discover yourself to really know who you are (30:06) You need a connection with your Creator (31:02) Resources Checklist: 7 Signs You May Be Stifling Your Singleness Worksheet: Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself Worksheet: Figuring Out Your Purpose Blog post: Shift Your Focus Stay Connected Thanks for listening to this episode. Producer's Pick is a bonus episode. In it we dissect the line of a movie, song, quote, social media post, Scripture, or topic you suggest. However for today's episode my producer and I chose the topic. Episode Summary After a whole week of interviews on the topic "Singleness: Blessing or Curse" it occurred to us that some women may not even know what it means to be single. So in today's episode I speak with Al Miller, my Pastor, Spiritual Authority and Mentor. Pastor Al is Senior Pastor of Fellowship Tabernacle. He is also founder and president of Whole Life College. As I sat in his class ‘Choosing a Mate' (we'll do that episode soon!), I came to realize how gravely misguided I was about what it meant to be single. So I decided to invite Pastor Al to shed some light on the topic and explain why it has nothing to do with whether we are in a relationship or not. This is Part 1 of the discussion. Key Takeaways The wisdom and counsel of God intends to help us to succeed at life (2:25) Being successful is really knowing the principles that make for success and consistently doing them (3:39) The only evidence that we believe something is when we obey and follow it (4:18) The quality of life is going to be dependent on the quality of our relationships and therefore the individual ability to relate effectively to other persons (9:07) When someone is single, he/she is able to stand on his/her own two feet (22:47) Singleness is about maturity (23:24) Top Quotes We were all created to be married (6:46) Being unmarried does not mean that you are single (11:04) Begin to see...the importance of being single in order to maintain a fruitful and satisfying relationship with someone else (17:11) When you are mature, in full control of you, of your behavior of your mind, you will have self control and discipline. Then you begin to talk about a person who is single (25:05) So a person who says boy, I can't live without a man, I can't live without a woman. They're not single yet...because they have not matured (31:05) Resources Checklist: 7 Signs You May Be Stifling Your Singleness Worksheet: Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself Worksheet: Figuring Out Your Purpose Blog post: Shift Your Focus Stay Connected Thanks for listening to this episode. Well before weight training was common in sports, he spent 10 years coaching at the collegiate level, where at Indiana University he became the first strength and conditioning coach in the Big 10. From 1984 until his retirement in 2008, he spent 21 years as an NFL strength coach, beginning with nine years in the New York Giants organization. Under Coach Bill Parcells, he helped them win Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990. Playing against the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV, the Giants set an all-time Super Bowl record for ball-control possession at 40 minutes and 33 seconds. Parker’s role as a strength and conditioning coach certainly contributed to the Giants’ tradition of excellence. He then went on to spend seven seasons with the New England Patriots, followed by helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win the first Super Bowl in team history in 2003. In 2005, Johnny went to the San Francisco 49ers before retiring in 2008. All told, his coaching practices, many of which are outlined in this book, helped to establish winning records with nine teams, including four Super Bowl appearances. In addition to his Super Bowl triumphs, he received the President’s Award from the Professional Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society, presented annually to the NFL’s top strength and conditioning coach and was named to the USA Strength and Conditioning Hall of Fame’s inaugural class, along with his co-authors Al Miller and Rob Panariello and mentors Alvin Roy, Clyde Emrich, and Lou Riecke. We conclude our conversation with National Soccer Hall of Fame coach Al Miller, who shares a wide array of additional recollections, anecdotes, musings, and insights from a legendary career across US outdoor and indoor soccer, including: An historic February 11, 1974 indoor game at Philadelphia’s Spectrum between Miller’s NASL champion Atoms and Moscow’s Red Army – generally acknowledged as the true genesis of the Major Indoor Soccer league four years later; The positives and the negatives of the New York Cosmos “superteam” that dominated the NASL in the late 1970s/early 1980s; Trading the Dallas Tornado’s cozy downtown confines of SMU’s Ownby Stadium for the major league bigtime of Irving’s Texas Stadium; The only-in-the-NASL saga of the one-year Calgary Boomers; Reuniting with Lamar Hunt via the 1983 Tampa Bay Rowdies; AND Helping the city of Cleveland end a 30-year pro sports championship drought with the 1993-94 NPSL season-winning Cleveland Crunch. In February 1973, the suddenly ascendant North American Soccer League hurriedly awarded a new franchise to Philadelphia construction magnate Thomas McCloskey, despite the league’s fast-approaching season start date of May 1st. The result of some Super Bowl VII arm-twisting by Kansas City Chiefs (and NASL Dallas Tornado) owner Lamar Hunt after helping McCloskey secure last-minute tickets, the team that would soon become the Philadelphia Atoms had only three months to move from birth to first game. In desperate need of a head coach, McCloskey and GM/soccer novice Bob Ehlinger turned to a bright young Hartwick College coach named Al Miller to hastily assemble a roster and a playing style, which Miller quickly achieved with a handful of English lower-division journeymen married with a bevy of hungry, underappreciated American players from the college ranks – rapidly gelling into an NASL championship team that stunned the pro soccer pundits (including the editors of Sports Illustrated), and became a Philly fan sensation. The immediate success of the Atoms and its decidedly American-style approach to the world’s game quickly thrust Miller into the US soccer coaching spotlight and set in motion a standout pro career that traversed the NASL, MISL and indoor NPSL (not to mention a brief stint helming the 1975 US Men’s National Team), and, ultimately a red jacket into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2008. In the first of a two-part interview, Miller joins host Tim Hanlon to reveal some never-before-heard stories from the front lines of his pioneering coaching career, including the Atoms, the Dallas Tornado, the one-year Calgary Boomers, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the MISL Cleveland Force, and the three-time NPSL champion Cleveland Crunch. Our World Cup fever has yet to break, and we spend this week reveling in some of the heretofore unexplored (at least on this podcast) nooks and crannies of modern-day American pro soccer history with one of its most unsung front office heroes. In a career spanning over four decades, sports PR and event management executive Thom Meredith has proverbially “seen it all” across some of US sports’ most remarkable leagues, franchises and governing bodies – including remarkable (and sometimes dubious) assignments like: handling press for the woeful NFL expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers of 1976-77; managing communications for Lamar Hunt’s World Championship Tennis circuit of the early 1980s; and directing a litany of events for the fast-growing (and World Cup USA-fueled) US Soccer Federation of the 1990s. But it’s Meredith’s work across some of the most exciting (and exasperating) teams of the late 1970s/early 1980s North American Soccer League – the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Washington Diplomats, Philadelphia Fury, and Dallas Tornado – as well as the enormously well-funded, but ultimately ill-fated Women’s United Soccer Association of the early 2000s, that really piques our obsessive interests. In this episode, we journey back with Meredith – the consummate professional soccer management insider – as he recounts priceless moments shared in the trenches with a veritable Who’s Who of the modern American game’s most indelible personalities, including: Shep Messing, Francisco Marcos, Al Miller, Phil Woosnam, Jim Karvellas, Seamus Malin, Alec Papadakis, John Hendricks, Timo Liekoski, Dick Berg, Tony DiCicco, Pele – and, of course, the incomparable investor-patron Hunt. We thank Podfly, SportsHistoryCollectibles.com, and Audible for their support of this week’s show!

It's pretty easy to fall into the pile of blues and get lost in another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 471st Roadhouse.
