Are you ready for a new perspective on relationships? Join me in this thought-provoking episode as I explore the impact of saying "my other half" or "my better half." If you're someone who has become accustomed to using these phrases in your relationship, it's time to rethink your choices. In this episode, we'll cover:
Outward love isn't always readily available - you won't always have people giving you the reassurance you crave or the nurturance you need during times of stress. So, what then?! The truth is...only YOU can take care of yourself and give yourself the love that you truly desire anytime.anywhere. But it's hard for many people to do because people don't actively learn how to love themselves and there are very few role models out there showing us what to do, or how to do it. In this episode I speak with Nardia who is the founder of NardiaJoy - a transformational leadership company that teaches founders and leaders in start-ups how to lead authentically, in a way that brings out the best in them and their teams. She transforms the way that leaders think and feel and supports them to gain a deep understanding of why they do what they do and assists them to become self-aware and how to take ownership of their impact. Nardia is also radicalising self-love through her community Love Queens, as she believes that self-love is the single most important lesson that we need to learn. When we know how to truly love ourselves, just as we are, then we can live the life we desire. Love is always the answer. Tune in to hear about Nardia's journey talking all about domestic violence, motherhood, narcissism and finding love within! Healthy relationships are built on safety, acceptance and trust. So, what do you do when you find out your partner has been watching porn? And how much is "too much"? Moreover, what should you do if you feel like it has been affecting your sex life? In this episode I speak with Dimitri Douchin, PhD who is a psychotherapist specialised in recovery from sexual addictions and trauma reprocessing. Dimitri's training was first in science. After obtaining his PhD, he left academia and started working as a psychosexual therapist. Meanwhile Dimitri battled his addictions until, after 17 years, he overcame his own addictions to sex and pornography. Focusing on releasing trauma and repressed emotions with inner child work, Dimitri has been helping thousands of men working on their sexuality and emotional wounds - a mission that he embodies today in his new platform dedicated to a holistic psychological treatment of pornography addiction, www.unhooked.care . Organised religion isn't for everyone and that's okay but what about other forms of spirituality? Everyone needs some sort of spiritual practice. Something that enables them to feel whole, balanced, and connected to their inner self or inner energy. In this episode, I speak with Nick ( Instagram @malakhim_tarot ) about all things related to Tarot Cards, Psychology and the Sufi Healing Order. Nick combines his knowledge on psychology with the symbolism of the Tarot to help clients find clarity and awareness. He has been interested in Tarot for close to 20 years and draws on work he has done with elemental energies, Sufism, studies of Kabbalah and in depth work with the I Ching. For close to a decade, he has also been on the Sufi path and is an ordained healing conductor in the Sufi Healing Order. Listen now to hear more about this alternative healing journey today! There's a lot of talk about "Toxic exes", "Toxic bosses", or "Toxic people" in general these days but can we really say people are toxic? Or is it just that they have toxic patterns of relating deeply ingrained within them? Toxic patterns that have been passed down from one generation to the next... In this episode, I talk about 6 of the most toxic patterns that people can have within them. Toxic patterns that create dysfunctional, disconnected and sometimes, dangerous relationships. How many times have you told someone "I'm okay" when your reality has been the opposite? How many times have you told others that "Things are going great" when really, your life was falling apart? Maybe...you've done neither? Maybe, you're someone who minimises? Maybe, you're someone who tells yourself "Things aren't that bad! I need to grow up and get over it"?! Everyone has lied at some point in their life - to themselves, or to other people. But why do we do it? And what is the cost when we choose not to be honest? In this episode, I walk you through the different lies we tend to fall into and how to start flexing your honesty muscle today with some key steps so grab a journal and pen - this one is a juicy one! In this episode I talk about my personal resistances to doing the work and what my journey looked like at the start, reasons as to why you may self-sabotage on your journey and becoming aware of some unhelpful patterns that will keep you stuck, plus things to be mindful of when seeking out a practitioner be it a counsellor, a coach, a psychologist or other. *Please note this episode contains a trigger warning. We all make assumptions in our relationships. We naturally fill in the gaps where we are missing pieces of information so we can make sense of our world - and of our relationship. But whenever we make an assumption, we have an impact on our experience and on someone else's. And the trouble truly arises when our assumptions are predominantly negative, creating conflict and disconnection, fuelling blame and doubt. In this episode, I'm talking about assumptions - what they are, how they may show up, what they teach you about yourself and how to start taking some key steps to stop assumption making in your relationship today! Sometimes, all people want is for someone to finally "choose them". In other words, they want someone to stick around and be with them instead of what they fear: being abandoned, or forgotten about. Many people want to feel lovable, desirable and like they're "worth" being with...yet, the reality is that people can feel the opposite when, at times, they are left ghosted, in silence, alone, or simply not chosen by their love interest (and in some cases, their life long partner when things like an infidelity or relationship breakdown occurs). In this final part of a three part series, I'm talking about the desire to be chosen and what it truly means - and why waiting for someone to choose you is detrimental to your happiness, and to your sense of self. *Insights from work refers to a mix of sources such as personal experience, research & studies primarily - experiences talked about in any of the episodes are usually generalised & likely to be a common experience for the many, rather than one individuals experience. Unresolved abandonment wounds can be the underlying cause for many of your relationship issues: insecurities, challenges around saying "good-bye" or being separated for too long, anxiety, obsessive behaviours, low energy levels, feeling like you are unlovable, unwanted and simply "not good enough". And yet, many people who have this wound cannot verbalise what it is that they are going through - my past self included. Many people who have this wound have grown up in homes where caregivers were absent or neglectful of the child's needs, where the caregiver was addicted or dependent on some sort of substance, or where they went through some sort of impactful moment in school just as their sense of self was developing. Without awareness of why you feel the way you do and how it connects back to your childhood, this wound will continue to hum around in the background affecting the way you relate in your relationships in adulthood - especially your romantic ones. Part One dives into The Abandonment Wound and Manifestations of Survival Strategies. In this episode you'll get some journaling prompts to help you uncover your own insights into why you relate in the way that you do as an adult. Part Two will build on this and teach you how this fear could cause you to self-sabotage in your love life so be sure to hit the "follow" or "subscribe" button. When it comes to individuals feeling their full range of feelings - we must refuse to let others feel our feelings for us and refuse to let us feel others feelings for them too. We must stop being over-functioning and take responsibility for our own inner world and acknowledge that others have that same responsibility too without expecting someone to make us happy or blame them for making us sad in any given moment. Society needs to stop expecting women to do all of the emotional labour too, there needs to be a balance between ALL humans when it comes to the management of emotions. Moreover, it's time to stop labelling people as “sensitive”, “dramatic”, “crazy”, “bossy”, “moody” and so on for expressing an emotion that isn't yet fully normalised in the eyes of society and regardless of one's identity or sex - we are all human beings, living a human experience and our emotions are there to teach us and guide us along the way. At one point in time there may have been a primary caregiver who reacted to you in ways that caused you to change, to minimise or even hide parts of yourself. The reaction causes you to develop certain survival strategies that ultimately meant in your mind that being yourself and expressing individuality was “dangerous" or "unsafe”. Your authentic self - your needs, values and desires - were perhaps, at times, seen as a threat and a form of betrayal in some ways. You may have carried this learnt behaviour and harmful beliefs that developed as a result into your adulthood life where you feel the need to change or hide who you are in order to survive - to receive love, to be accepted and to ensure that you would not be left on your own. She is a deeply feminine creator who uses her Pussy Power to heal sexual trauma, integrate her shadow self and find deep connection to her body. As a young child, you depended on your caregivers to teach you about things like boundaries, love, and individuality. You were vulnerable, dependent, and open - always learning new ways to survive and to ensure that you would not be abandoned, or rejected. You would have learned certain survival mechanisms and to some degree, you would have experienced trauma. Trauma being an emotional response to an event or person like an argument, a breakup, a form of abuse, or accident perhaps. And this is completely unavoidable - you are living a human experience where things won't always run smoothly. In this episode, I discuss how trauma can provide you with life lessons and the importance of exploring your trauma when it comes to unlearning survival mechanisms that are no longer serving you in your adulthood life as they would have in childhood. This is about getting back to the real you - beneath the trauma and roles that were so successfully forced upon you. To dive deeper, you can find a supporting blog post on the following link: https://katieodonoghue.com/theself/healing-trauma
Did you ever feel like you were expected to be the adult in situations as a child? Did you feel like you absorbed a lot of responsibilities? Did you feel like you had to raise a younger sibling? Do you feel like you matured quite quickly and missed out on the childlike things through the years? If you're similar to me in terms of background, you likely had to grow up fast and take on more responsibilities - you lost your chance to be a child and do the things that children do. Perhaps you were expected to be the emotional caretaker of your primary caregiver (mother or father) too? All of which sets you up for low self-worth, feeling like a failure, co-dependent relationships, little to no boundaries and a lost sense of self. If you want to read a little more on this topic, you can find the blog post to support this episode on the following link: https://katieodonoghue.com/theself/theparentifieddaughter
On today's episode I have special guest Fiona Lennon (Instagram @this_is_fi) who hails from Mullingar and commonly goes by Fí, her artist name and project she has been developing over the last few years. Coming from a musical town, she began writing music at 18 and has since accumulated hundreds of songs and many great experiences (working with Grammy nominated songwriters, being played on national radio, and playing big stages like Electric Picnic, Whelans, and Cyprus Avenue) As well as this, Fiona worked as a primary school teacher for four years. She went on a solo trip to Los Angeles which made her realise that she wanted to go into something different when she returned home and in this episode we discuss her journey - her experience with anorexia from a young age, pivoting in her career, dealing with friendship groups, trusting your gut feeling and so much more! Her life has been coloured by many different experiences which have taught her to go with the ebbs and flow of life, to relax on expectations, and to trust her instinct to guide her on her own path of self-discovery.
Do you remember being rewarded or praised for being a “good girl” when you were younger? Our primary caregivers would not have been aware of the meaning that we would have added to this simple phrase but the covert message that is conveyed through it? You don't deserve to be yourself, you are expected to be good all the time, to not express the full range of your emotions and to not do as you please but to be compliant, to give or help out when asked, and do not say no because that's rude and impolite…Do as you're told, fit into the mould of being a “good girl” and don't cause any trouble. You'll carry this way of being into your adulthood life if you leave it unexplored and the knock-on effect? Catastrophic if you're anything like me... If you want to learn more about this dilemma, you can check out the blog post to accompany this episode on the following link: https://katieodonoghue.com/theself/thegoodgirldilemma
There is so much to say about having boundaries but are we ever really taught how to set them or what they truly mean in terms of protecting your sense of self? Who remembers having conversations about boundaries in detail? In this episode I explore boundaries but if you'd like to dive a little deeper you can check out the supporting blog post on the following link: https://katieodonoghue.com/theself/setting-boundaries

As far back as he can remember he has had a deep interest in understanding how people work and why they do what they do. Thus, leading him down the path of psychology. After years of studying and broadening his knowledge within the areas of Organisational Psychology, Coaching/Positive Psychology and Sports Psychology he realised that his core driver was 'Human Performance and Growth'. Whether that be at an individual, team or group level, he has an intricate way of understanding how to help guide others to achieve and grow in whatever area they need. Done so through a mixed methodology of various psychological areas and experience using these skills in various life settings such as business, academics and currently in a sports setting. Helping individuals and teams develop by focusing on values, culture, goal attainment, self management, self regulation, mental skills, positive psychology and regulation strategies/interventions. With a strong ethos centred around the growth mindset coupled with his experience, knowledge and abilities within the psychology codes, Sana will definitely be able to help you better understand yourself, the way you work, the way you think and how to improve the quality of your life in those areas.
Let's face it we've all been there at some point in time... Excluded from group chats? Rejected from someone you were dating? Missed out on a job promotion? Didn't get accepted into a college course? Welcome to episode 8! There is a lot to say about starting your inward journey but at times, it means shedding old versions of yourself and with that can come some relationship breakdowns - familial, platonic or romantic - as you step into your power and connect with your true self. In this episode, it's more of a casual chat about my journey and accepting the loss of people in your life but how your journey can also create space for existing relationships and new relationships to become that bit more meaningful and connected on a deeper level, even if it is only you doing "the work" at times.
Doing "the work" will be key to having healthy relationships, including having a healthy relationship with yourself but it will also be key to ensuring that you don't project onto others your own inner struggles. Accepting what is, is the first step in your healing journey. www.katieodonoghue.com for 1:1 coaching - limited spaces are now available and open for the month of June.
We've all watched fairytales and rom coms growing up but how helpful have they been when it comes to our love life and relationships? If you're someone who is caught up on "the one"... Are you someone who blames other's for the way you are in life? Do you blame your moods on other people? Do you blame other's for your performance, or lack of, in a match, work, or exam perhaps? Do you avoid taking responsibility in your life because it's easier to do than to hold your hands up and say "this is actually my fault, these are the choices I have made and I need to live with them"? Maybe you're someone who has been blamed for other people's actions, moods or ways of being? Maybe you're someone who accepts blame for things that are actually not your fault but you've lost your voice and have forgotten how to stand up for what you believe in? Maybe you're someone who is living in fear and that's why you accept blame because it's easier than choosing to challenge someone and speak up? Whatever it is for you, this is an episode that everyone needs to hear!
