"How can we collectively increase the quantity and quality of giving to nonprofits, to charities, so that they can raise more awareness, raise more funds, deliver more impact in their communities?"If there's a question that defines Lightful's work, I think Vinay shares it in this.My guest on the Karmic Capitalist podcast this week is Vinay Nair, co-founder and CEO of Lightful. Lightful uses technology to accelerate impact in the social impact sector. He'd just returned from an uplifting conference with the Gates Foundation (took some prodding to get this out - no easy namedrop from Nair!), and he shares with us how that works, and the amplification of good that comes from it.Having a for-profit organisation whose clients are mostly nonprofit can be quite a tightrope to walk, and Vinay shares how Lightful "positively correlate ours income and impact" and the importance of that positive correlation being structural to avoid conflict of interest.Vinay is also Resident Expert at the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at the Saïd Business School (that's some mouthful!), and I probe into what he's seeing in the generation that is coming through Saïd.His shares an uplifting observation. When he's doing a session with students on impact investing or tech for good, they'll pretty much retort "of course, what else - Tech for bad? Non impactful investing?".For them, the default language is "as if it were ever thus or certainly how it must be from today going forward. And I find that powerful inspirational.Vinay is a thoughtful advocate. We run the gamut of business doing good and being profitable, of being a for-profit serving the nonprofit sector, the role of values, and much more. He's an engaging conversationalist. Listen in to this episode of the Karmic Capitalist._______________I host a weekly online workshop with CEOs of SMEs (10 to 100 employees approx) about scaling up, allowing them to step back and do more strategic work, and doing it in line with their values. Max 6 per session so we can have a real conversation. If you'd like to join me, find a date that works for you here. They aren't charged for - you and I will both get value from the conversation.Only CEOs / MDs apply - strictly peer-level conversation.

This week it's a dog's life for George as he plots his long trip north to cover Dundee's revenge mission at Ross County. The future of Jeando Fuchs at Dundee United is up for discussion as our Balon d'Or experts discuss which Dundee or Dundee United is the Lionel Messi of Sandeman Street to win the coveted Jute Jug. Our quartet of Tom Duthie, Graeme Finnan, George Cran and Ewan Smith are reunited as they discuss the issues that matter - including George's hidden Hobnob stash.
It's the end of the international break, well at least for Dundee United. United are ready to welcome North East rivals Aberdeen to Tannadice after unveiling their latest star. Ghanaian under-20 playmaker Mathew Cudjoe is already cashing in on his fame as fans throw money at him, while our resident statto Ewan puts some numbers behind Dundee defender Lee Ashcroft. Ewan has returned from his Scotland travels with six points in the bag but George has packed his bags as Dundee enjoy an extended break. With George Cran on holiday, Tam Duthie is joined by Graeme Finnan and Ewan Smith to talk over domestic struggles and international doubles in this week's Twa Teams, One Street podcast.

This was a fun interview, Rebels. I felt John was a really interesting guest, and I'm glad you get to hear this interview. I, too, had aspirations of becoming a pro wrestler, but I kept putting the mask on backwards. Which made walking to the ring quite a challenge. But John, nonetheless, made a career in the wrestling biz, being the voice of various wrestling organizations. Now he's got not only a podcast about stuff he likes, but he and (spoiler alert:future guest) Jason Taylor host the popular "Mat Talk." Which isn't about wrestling, but about Matlock. Talk about extremes, huh? Wait, there might have been that one episode where Andy Griffith leapt off the top rope to prove someone's innocence. No? We’re back with our second season! We’ve talked to Beth Kanter, nonprofit expert, master trainer and Lightful’s Senior Advisor, to hear her thoughts on the evolution of social networks and what it means for nonprofits. Beth is a pioneer in the nonprofit sector and she has followed closely all the big trends ever since Twitter was still a small community of people trying a new shiny toy. We’ve asked her about the future of social media, the impact of AI in our lives and also the things we need to focus on when building our digital skills. You don’t want to miss it if you are passionate about the charity sector and what’s coming next! PS. This episode was recorded before COVID-19 came into our lives, which means you get to enjoy an episode that is…COVID-free!

In episode 41 we chat to Vinay Nair, co-founder and CEO of social good tech startup Lightful about how charities can use technology to tell their stories more effectively, and some of the key opportunities and challenges. Topics covere: Why is storytelling important for charities? Has social media changed the game for charities in terms of how they communicate? Have some of these tools levelled the playing field between big and small (or well-known and obscure) organisations? Is there sometimes a tension between focusing on individual stories/emotions and focusing on objective metrics/measures of success? Or can the two be successfully combined? How well-equipped are charities to take advantage of the potential of digital? If some organisations are struggling, what are the key barriers? Is there a danger that social media and online discourse create perverse incentives to sensationalise or simplify issues, because everyone is competing for scarce attention? Does this present a particular challenge for charities? Social media and other new communications technology is enabling people to form communities of interest/purpose much more easily than before. Can charities harness this potential, or is there a threat that it will make them less relevant as people look to networked models of social change?
