And we're back - with the summer coming up we have a bunch of gym events on deck. In this episode, Mikey and I sit down to catch up on what's currently planned as well as chat about a couple of events that haven't been set yet that we're looking to try and do. We squeezed in the recording in between classes so it's a bit of a shorter episode for us. I hope you all enjoy. And we're back - this week's episode is a sit-down conversation with Heidi Ball + Heather Dever. Heidi and Heather both volunteer their time to help the Flander's Nature Center. They are involved in the organizing and planning the Flander's Field + Forest 5k which is happening Friday, June 3rd. This is a race that we have participated in and sponsored every year since its inception in 2015 and we're looking forward to another successful year. The race is not your average 5k and it's one of two fundraisers that Flander's puts on each year. All of the proceeds will benefit the Flanders Nature center & Land Trust. It's a family-friendly event and after the race, there's live music, food trucks, and it's just a great time all around. I need to thank Heidi and Heather for being willing to sit down and talk about things and hope you all enjoy. Before we get into the show I just wanted to highlight the event sponsors that help make this race happen. Starting with the Ultra-Marathon level sponsors we have Ion Bank, and Showcase Realty, Inc. Moving to the Marathon level we have Michael Friedman Orthodontics. Next up at the Half Marathon level, we have my personal favorite - Strongtown Fitness, as well as Aquarion Water Company, the Law Offices of Dana D'Angelo LLC, Homes by Heather, Moore O'Brien & Fonti Law Firm, Rich & John's Complete Chimney Service, and Woodbury Fitness on Main. Moving to the 10k level we have Connecticut Home Navigator, Gager, Bower & Scalzo LLP, Kenneth Lynch & Sons Inc., Manzi Insurance & Real Estate, Senich Law Firm LLC, Stone Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Gary Westerman, and Woodbury Brewing Company. Finally at the 5k level we have Ken's Hardware Inc., the Savings Bank of Danbury, and the Southbury Printing Centre. Thank you all. https://flandersnaturecenter.org/5k/

And we're back - we've had a few episodes that were recorded towards the end of last year and this week's episode is one that was originally recorded around the new year's Holiday. This episode is a sit-down conversation with Dr. Hayden-William Courtland. We have had the pleasure of knowing Hayden since sometime around 2015. He's from New York City and has family in the Southbury area so he's been a regular visitor throughout the years. He has a plethora of coaching certifications and academic credentials which I do my best to list off while trying to introduce him on the show and feel like I still fell short. He is a certified Starting Strength Coach, has achieved his CrossFit L-3 certification and he has recently stepped into the world of gym ownership and is the new owner of Solace New York, also known as CrossFit Solace. I have to thank him for taking the time to talk with me and hope you all enjoy. @dr.courtland @scienceforfitness @solacenewyork

And we're back - this week's episode is a sit-down conversation with our Coach Kelly who recently completed her Precision Nutrition certification. Kelly is my sister-in-law and Mikey's wife so it's safe to say she has been a part of the Strongtown community since the beginning - if you're interested in hearing more about what brought her and Mikey together they were originally featured on Episode 28 back in April of 2020. She is an incredibly knowledgeable Coach and I have always admired her dedication and determination…you can follow her nutrition coaching on Instagram @symmetrynutrition. In this episode, we talk about her experience getting certified and the upcoming “Look Good + Feel Good Challenge” that will be kicking off this month. I'm very grateful that Kelly has taken the reins and decided to offer this to the gym and am excited to see how it works for people. The challenge officially begins Saturday, April 16th and in order to set the teams and have everyone complete the initial intake form the deadline to register is Saturday, April 9th. If you're interested in the challenge you can register through the member's app under “pre-orders” or you can let Mikey or myself know when you see us in the gym. I have to thank her for taking the time to sit down and talk with me and I hope you all enjoy. https://www.instagram.com/symmetrynutrition/

We're back and working through the archive of episodes that were previously recorded and never published. I believe this show was actually recorded sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving since there are a few references to the haunted hayride. In this show, Mikey and I get a chance to sit down with Donnie of DNR Laboratories aka DNR Labs. Donnie has been a member of Strongtown since the beginning. He is genuinely one of the most interesting people I have had the pleasure of meeting and his breadth of knowledge never fails to impress me. Anyone who knows Donnie knows that he's always on the go, he's always willing to help and he also seems to know just about everyone. He has been the MC at our Battle for the Bell competition multiple times and he's genuinely the reason our gym sounds as good as it does. We were a little tight on time during the recording so the conversation focuses on his personal background and what brought him to start DNR Labs. We'll be getting him back on here in the future to discuss some of his hobbies which include flying planes, sky-diving, volunteer fire fighting, and creating a stand-alone radio network. I have to thank him for giving up his time to talk with us and if anyone is looking to follow him there are links to his company's info in the show notes below and you can find him on instagram @donnie_dimmer. Patty's is a NY Style Deli that is located right off exit 16 on I-84 in Southbury which also happens to be right down the hill from the gym, so we have known them since we opened in 2011. They have been one of Southbury's hidden gems for close to 35 years now. Nora has grown up in the business - both her and her sister Becky are General Mangers, her father Gani is the owner, and her grandmother on her mother's side was the original Patty, whose silhouette is featured on their logo. As of this last December Patty's recently opened up their 2nd location on Route 25 in Newtown, so whether you're in Southbury or Newtown you're not far from a Patty's Pantry. Hey everyone, there was an issue with the initial upload of episode 066 for Great Minds Coffee Roasters, when the episode was originally published it cuts short right before the 37-minute mark. I did try to reupload the corrected file so if you listened to an episode that was 60 minutes with an outro then you heard the whole thing and you've already heard this. If you listened to an episode that cuts out between the 36 and 37 minute mark then this picks up where the last episode left off. If anyone knows me they know I love coffee - so I was super excited when I discovered that there was a local roaster in the Watertown / Oakville area. They opened up Great Minds Coffee Roasters in November of 2019 and they had about 4 months of normal business before getting hit with the covid curveball. Chris was first exposed to roasting back in college and had worked his way up to head roaster at Capitol City Roasters throughout his college years. Emily's family had owned small businesses and moving back to CT inspired them to explore potential options for businesses and side projects they could do. They have an amazing story and I fully vouch for the quality of their coffee after enjoying the Guatemala mix this past week. I’m hoping to mix in these type of episodes with our member interviews and sit-downs with local business owners to add a bit of variety to the show. The plan is to call these conversations a “Sidebar” episode. I know Mikey and I have had a few of these in the past but plan is that this will be the first official Strongtown Talks Sidebar episode. This week’s episode is a sit down with a couple that has been with us since the beginning - The Guerreras. Rob + MaryBeth both began their Strongtown story back in 2013 and have been a staple of our community ever since. From competing in the early days of Battle for the Bell, to helping out at the Lift for a Purpose Weightlifting meet they have seen the gym grow through the years and have a unique perspective. We talk about how they first met, what first brought them to the gym, and discuss some of their more memorable experiences. We are lucky to have them as part of our community and I have to thank them for giving up their time to chat with me and be on the show. IG @mbguerrera | @cambo__72

This week’s episode is a sit-down conversation with Rich Schnitzel. Rich was one of our first guests on this podcast and he was first featured on episode number 4. If you’re curious about his story and interested in hearing how the podcast has improved over the past couple years then I would highly recommend going back and listening to the episode. Rich has been a member at Strongtown for a few years now. While I enjoy talking to him as a member of our community he is also an entrepreneur and business owner himself so selfishly I always enjoy talking shop and hearing his perspective on things. Outside of the gym he helps companies & businesses with automation and you can reach him at both richardschnitzel.com and bowtiebots.com. One of the key takeaways that I personally got from our conversation was the understanding that this past year created challenges, which developed adaptations, which can then have a positive long term impact on the business. I have to thank him for taking the time to sit down and talk with me and hope you all enjoy the show. http://richardschnitzel.com/ http://bowtiebots.com/ IG @richschnitzel

The new year is bringing new podcast goals for Strongtown Talks - we’ve been able to line up a bunch of guests that I’m excited to get on the show and over the past couple of weeks I’ve been able to record a bunch of episodes. Much like the gym & fitness - the goal is consistency so you can start looking forward to a new episode each week. To kick off the 1st episode of the new year we’re sitting down with a 5+ year member - Scott Chinitz. Scott has been a member at Strongtown since 2015 and he’s someone who up until this past year has had a commute that has been completely unconducive towards maintaining any type of gym routine or life outside of work. Despite having to commute back and forth to NYC he has always been able to find time for the gym and even though we were shut down for literally a quarter of the year, he was able to attend the gym more in 2020 than any other year. Outside of the gym he is an avid soccer player and golfer and one of the key takeaways that I got after sitting down with him was the power of consistency and the impact of marginal gains. I have to thank him for taking the time to sit down and talk with me and hope you all enjoy the show. IG @schnitz | Email: scott.chinitz@yahoo.com

In this episode, number 46, Mikey and I get a chance to sit down and discuss his artistic achievements and the new gym protocols put out by the state. Up until recently, CT was one of the few states in the New England area that permitted people to workout in gyms without a mask. Assuming equipment was spaced out appropriately and cleaned after each use. That all changed this past Friday when the state came out with an amendment to their Phase 2.1 Protocols, which required gyms to lower their capacity from 50% down to 25% and also mandated masks be worn at all times within the facility. We are lucky that we have enough space where the changes to the capacity doesn’t impact what we’ve been doing. The mask mandate on the other hand unfortunately does. Mikey and I talk through this new challenge, and I hope you all enjoy.

This episode was recorded back in early September with Mikey. At the time California and a good portion of the West Coast was being consumed by wildfires. For those that don’t already know - before Mikey, myself and the rest of the Gallagher clan settled in CT we spent a little more than a year living in Cali. We talk about this period of time and some of our more memorable experiences. Mikey also recently got a haircut so that needed to be discussed which also turned into some conversations about local breweries and general local banter.

And we’re back...it’s been a little more than a month and half since our last episode, I’m calling it a mid-season break. Don’t judge me. On this episode I get a chance to sit down with the one and only Rachel McGovern. Rachel has been a staple of the Strongtown community since 2012 so she has seen the gym through pretty much all of our different iterations. She is one of the most consistent people in the gym and has never been one to shy away from hard work. She’s a mother of 2 amazing kids and in her life outside the gym she currently works as a scientist. Spoiler alert - I learn what “bench science” is. We talk about her background, her life before Strongtown, what first brought her to the gym as well as what she’s currently working. I do need to note that I should have scheduled more time around the recording, we ended up bumping into the morning class starting to arrive so it does end a bit abruptly towards the end. I have to thank Rachel for taking the time to talk with me and hope you all enjoy.

We have a slightly different type of episode for this week . Instead of talking about current events and things happening around the gym we’re going back in time like Bill and Ted to the summer of 1996. This was a summer where Bernie decided that Mike and I didn’t do nearly enough biking or bonding together and what we really needed was a 2-week camping/biking expedition between Vermont and Canada. In hindsight this was an amazing experience and it also happens to be when Mikey got hit by a car.

Mikey and I recorded this episode on Saturday June 6th, the state had just recently announced that gyms will be allowed to reopen for indoor classes a few days earlier than originally planned which is great news. We’re excited to get back into the gym and we review the phases that we’ve created that will allow us to comply with the state and run a class that we are comfortable with. After this episode was recorded there was a series of events and interactions involving the founder of CrossFit. Between the quarantine and the tension in society being at an all-time high it has caused a tremendous amount of upheaval through the greater CrossFit community. In some ways, it was a ‘perfect storm’ of an event. I was going to try to address things during this intro piece and it really deserves to be the focus of an episode which will be next week’s show. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone back in the gym this week!

Welcome to June! This week’s Strongtown Talk is a sit down with Mikey, myself, and Matty Mauro. Matty was brought on the show as a guest and also as a bit of a technical expert to help make sure last week’s recording issues don’t become a regular occurrence. Matty has a background in audio production and recording...he has been a part of the Strongtown community since 2013’ish and prior to moving up to this area of the state he owned and operated a music production studio for 7 years. We get a chance to talk about what first brought him to CrossFit, becoming a new parent, and bit about quarantined life. A quick note - since I had Matty for the recording we recorded the show in 2 parts using slightly different equipment and setups. There is a brief intermission about 60% through the show as we switched gear. I owe him a huge thank you for both taking the time to share his story and for helping me get a better handle on the recording process.

Rich has been on a few of the earlier shows and this was Sara’s first time. A couple of quick notes: 1 - I screwed something up during the recording so my voice is even more muffled and mumbly than usual. Rich and Sara sound great so I tried to cut out as much of myself as possible. 2 - Sara works for an undisclosed retailer who was recently the victim of some looting and vandalism. The story you are about to hear is true, the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

I want to give a quick shout out to Melissa Reed from CrossFit 203 and Reed Fitness & Physical Therapy, for helping LuAnn get back into a workout routine. Melissa recently published a “Postpartum Return to Fitness Guidebook” (link below) which LuAnn has found to be a tremendous resource. Enjoy the show...
