5 Shocking Truths about the Modere Closing and Network Marketing

Special episode and the lessons we can learn from the recent Modere Closing and the future of network marketing.Episode OverviewIn this episode, I dive deep into the recent shocking news of Modere shutdown without any prior notice, leaving thousands of distributors and the entire network marketing community shocked.I share not only the implications of the Modere shutdown but also the essential lessons that network marketers must learn to protect their futures and build resilient businesses.Modere: What Exactly Happened? On Friday, April 11th, 2025, Modere closed without any warning or notification.I was hanging out with my mom who was visiting from NYC when my friend Ian Farrar text me about it.I felt “sick to my stomach,” knowing friends and colleagues who had built significant incomes were suddenly left with no commissions and no clear path forward.Notable leaders like Justin Prince, Marina Simone, and others had previously left, signaling underlying issues.Still, the abrupt closure was entirely unexpectedly, making what happened to Modere even more devastating.Immediate Impact on Leaders and DistributorsI highlighted the stark reality faced by many top earners and everyday distributors in Modere:Incomes ranging from $1,000 per month to $100,000 per month vanished overnight.Unlike previous cases (such as Beachbody or Rodan + Fields shifting models), Modere provided no transition, leaving no “Plan B”.Final product orders were delivered, but beyond fulfilling refunds, everything else ceased abruptly. Is Network Marketing Still Worth It After Modere Shutdown?I addressed this question…Is residual income still viable in network marketing?I emphasize that:Any industry carries risk. Even large corporations like Kodak have vanished over time.I personally still earn network marketing residual incomefrom a business I built over two decades ago, proving that stability can exist but requires both skill and luck.I underscore that Modere's closing doesn't represent the entire industry—many companies continue to thrive.Lessons Learned From Modere1. Entrepreneurship Involves RiskEntrepreneurship, including network marketing, involves ups and downs. Companies may close, and markets fluctuate. I reassure listeners that risk is universal, not exclusive to network marketing.2. Network Marketing Residual Income Requires Smart ChoicesNetwork marketing residual income exists but requires choosing stable companies and products with lasting demand.I share insights from my own success, acknowledging the element of luck but also highlighting the importance of market research and strategic planning.3. Personal Development and GrowthThe true benefit of network marketing isn't solely financial but personal.I share my journey from being a shy, quiet Asian kid from Brooklyn, New York, to someone confidently impacting thousands through speaking and coaching.I describe network marketing as a “personal development university with a pay plan.”Why Personal Branding Yourself is EssentialI stress that the Modere shutdown underscores the critical importance of personal branding:Individuals overly associated with a single company risk losing their identity if the company fails.Leaders who built strong personal brands (such as Tony and Sarah Zolecki, John and Nadia Melton, Michelle Barnes) transitioned smoothly to new ventures due to their personal following.Building your personal brand through consistent value-driven content ensures your community follows you beyond any single company's fate.Characteristics of Network Marketing Companies That LastI draw from my 22 years of industry experience to highlight characteristics common to enduring network marketing companies:Avoiding Hype: Companies built on solid, valuable products rather than short-lived excitement tend to last.Steady Growth Over Rapid Expansion: Companies that grow steadily rather than explosively typically sustain longer.International Expansion: Successful, long-lasting companies eventually expand internationally, maintaining a fresh influx of ambitious leaders.Homegrown Leadership Development: Companies that develop new leaders internally, rather than recruiting high-profile leaders from other companies, achieve lasting growth and resilience.Protecting Your Future After Modere ClosingFocus on Core Business ActivitiesI advise listeners to concentrate on income-producing activities and avoid excessive distractions such as overly focusing on industry news or social media scrolling.Implementation Over InformationThe Modere closing illustrates the importance of action.Instead of just consuming information about industry events, I emphasize the need for practical implementation:Improve customer service and community-building.Offer intangible value (personal support, accountability, recognition) that competitors like Amazon can't replicate.Reinforce your unique value to customers to prevent loss to cheaper alternatives. The Importance of Investing and DiversifyingIn business there's always uncertainty. I emphasize financial responsibility:Invest network marketing income into diverse assets (stocks, real estate, health, family time).Diversify your financial portfolio to buffer against unexpected industry downturns. Why I Still Recommend Network MarketingDespite the Modere closing, I firmly believe in network marketing's value:Provides unmatched business education (selling, marketing, time management).Skills gained are highly transferable, beneficial for careers and businesses beyond network marketing.I passionately recommend network marketing to my children for these invaluable life and business skills.Final Thoughts: Resilience and GrowthI offer powerful encouragement for those affected by Modere's closure:Leaders who built successful businesses can rebuild and often become stronger through adversity.Challenging times amplify personal and leadership growth, setting up future success.Network marketing residual income remains possible but requires adaptability, personal branding, and strategic financial management.Implementation always beats information alone. Take action today, and go positively impact someone's life.

You get an episode you can't afford to miss.In the latest episode of Where Brains Meet Beauty, host Jodi Katz brings together Danessa Myricks, Founder and CEO of Danessa Myricks Beauty, and Anncy Rowe, Chief Commercial Officer of Rodan + Fields, in front of a live studio audience for a conversation that's equal parts inspiring and thought-provoking.As the conversation unfolds, we uncover a shared thread in both women's lives: the innate desire to teach and lead. Danessa takes us back to her childhood, where she organized mock classrooms and dreamt of guiding people up mountains—a metaphor that perfectly captures her lifelong mission to inspire. Anncy reflects on her upbringing as the eldest sibling, where leadership wasn't just a role; it was part of her identity.Anchored by the quarter's theme, "Power Moves: Excellence in Leadership," the discussion dives deep. Anncy shares insights from Sarah Jakes Roberts' book Power Moves: Ignite Your Confidence and Become a Force, discussing how personal power can shift depending on our environment and how crucial it is to activate that power with intention. Danessa opens up about her journey—from feeling powerless to recognizing her strength. Her mantra? Do the things that scare you. It's a challenge she embraced over the past year and one she's carrying forward.Leadership styles and the impact of feedback also take center stage. Danessa reflects on her evolution from leading solely with empathy to understanding the necessity of clear expectations and constructive feedback. Anncy candidly shares her shift from leading through fear to fostering joy and meeting individual needs. Both emphasize the importance of creating safe spaces for honest communication—a key to authentic growth. What makes this episode stand out isn't just the remarkable achievements of these women—it's their vulnerability. They talk about self-doubt, the power of no, and resilience's importance. It's a raw, authentic look at what it means to grow, lead, and own your power. If you're looking for a dose of inspiration, strategies for personal growth, or simply a reminder that even the most successful leaders have moments of uncertainty, this episode is for you.For more updates and exclusive content, connect with us on LinkedIn @BaseBeautyCreativeAgency or @JodiKatz.

Hello, Rainmakers! Today, we had the immense pleasure of hosting Sarah Robbins, a power-packed CEO, an influential voice in the direct selling space, and an incredible mother. Sarah's journey is nothing short of inspiring and empowering. Sarah is the top distributor and earner for Rodan + Fields, a renowned skincare company. From a kindergarten teacher navigating through a struggling economy to leading a successful business, Sarah's journey is a testament to perseverance, determination, and the power of unconventional strategies. Today, we dove deep into her unique business strategies, her journey as a working mom, and her focus on maintaining health and energy. When it comes to building a brand and influence, Sarah's approach is truly remarkable. She uses social media as a powerful tool to empower women, particularly mothers, to believe in their abilities and build their own brand. Sarah emphasizes serving the community before thinking about profit, which is such a powerful and refreshing perspective. According to Sarah, knowing your audience is key, but so is knowing your own superpower. Identifying what you're good at and what people commonly approach you for is a great starting point. Your superpower can serve as a foundation for the value you can offer your audience. When asked about going live on social media, Sarah shares her transformation. She recalls how her initial live videos were overly polished with professional setups. But over time, she started embracing authenticity and imperfection. The primary goal for Sarah during her live sessions is to serve her audience, irrespective of how she appears. She says, "People expect the 'ands' and the 'ums.' Perfectionism equals procrastination." We completely agree with Sarah's focus on service and authenticity. Going live on social media can be a valuable skill in business. It forces you into action, helps you overcome the fear of public speaking, and lets you engage with your audience in real-time. The key takeaway is that 'done is better than perfect.' So Rainmakers, if you have a product or a service to sell on social media this episode is a game-changer! Talk about your superpower, your journey, or something you're passionate about. Everyday Happiness - Finding Harmony and Bliss

Sometimes you need to listen to the quiet voice inside of you.  And sometimes that voice gets so loud you can't ignore it. It's time for a pivot.  I'll explain in today's episode.      Transcript:   Welcome to Everyday Happiness, I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and this is our very last daily podcast episode.  We're delivered 668 episodes in almost two years, never missing a day.  The team has been more incredible than I ever imagined. It takes a group effort and Chelsey, Blessy, Richelle, Jeimy, and Jeff are a 5-star team and make all of the magic happen behind the scenes.      Now, before we get into the why and the way forward.  The podcast episodes will still be live and you can listen to them at any time.  You can search key topics on my website, or start from the beginning on your favorite podcast player.    We started this during covid, at a time when we were all at home. I had created space.  I was obsessed with this new creative outlet.    I heard someone say, “don't be afraid to quit the things that are no longer working for you in your business or your life”.  For me, this was a thoughtful decision because this is working for my business.  But it wasn't working for my life to have a daily podcast.  Instead, the vehicle is changing, it's a pivot to a bi-monthly email instead of a daily podcast. I think it's the happiest email in your inbox.     Scientists sometimes use the term Identity Foreclosure. Meaning, it can be so hard to leave behind something that you think is so closely tied to your identity.  I am a podcast host.  I have a daily micro-podcast.  What I realized through some quiet time with my thoughts and conversations with my bestie, Jenna, was that podcasting is the vehicle.  And the vehicle can pivot.  This vehicle is pivoting to email.    I love happiness.  That isn't changing.  The way I show up for the people that I am blessed to have join the email community is with quality content, inspiration, and a behind the scenes peek into life.     Have you ever felt like you had too many irons in the fire or too many demands on your time? I often say there is a mental bandwidth to saying “yes”.  I am feeling the need to zone in on my kids, my husband, the people I love so deeply, and that feels right - right now. This season will change.  They always do.  Living in my word of the year - CARE, I am choosing to care for my body, my mental bandwidth and the friends and family that I love. I am living my priorities and choosing social connection, which we all know, is the cornerstone to fulfilled happiness.      Let's face it, we are all on this path of life. We are all in a different season. We can be busy and balanced if we are living our priorities. I am still busy.  And, I am living my motto of Intentional Margins.  I have consulting work that brings me incredible purpose, satisfaction and fulfillment.  I am a rep for Rodan + Fields, which brings me great joy to not only have the best skin and hair of my life as I age, but also to help others.     I invite you to join us in our email community. Life is heavy enough, we shouldn't have to search for happiness.  Get the happiest email in your inbox, delivered with a smile only twice a month right now. https://www.katiejefcoat.com/email No spam.  Just happiness.    What I am seeking comfort in, is that I am choosing to put my foot on the break, but I know where the gas is and how to accelerate when the time is right. And that feels good.    I invite you to reflect on how you could use that break pedal in your own life.  What could you say “no” to that would allow you space to flourish?    Until next time, whenever that is, you can always connect with me, in our email community, join at www.katiejefcoat.com, on social @katiejefcoat and remember, kindness is contagious.   I know that our small acts of kindness make an impact and that continues to inspire me to do this work.  I'm cheering for you and I believe in you. Bye for now.    And, let's connect on social at @everydayhappinesswithkatie  and join the community on the hashtags #IntentionalMargins and #everydayhappinesswithkatie on Instagram   Links:  https://onamission.bio/everydayhappiness/

The theme this week on the Retirement Quick Tips Podcast is: How To Spot & Avoid Get-Rich-Quick Schemes Today, I'm closing the week with 5 get-rich-quick schemes according to moneyunder30.com.  New cryptocurrencies. The crypto market is full of scammers, and some have imploded in recent months as the tide went out on the crypto market. If you must buy bitcoin, which I don't recommend, it's best to stay away from any new-fangled cryptocurrency and just stick with the old hats.  Multi-level marketing companies. I might get some hate for this, because multilevel marketing companies (aka MLMs) are so popular. I can name at least 10 people I know personally, probably more, who have been or are currently involved in a MLM. These companies include Mary Kay, Rodan & Fields, Herbalife…the list goes on. “MLMs are notorious for using psychology and manipulation to lure unsuspecting income-seekers into their midst. Then, they squeeze capital out of them on the dangling promise of eventually multiplying their returns.” All of them promise that you'll “become your own boss, get free training, and earn six figures in your first year!” Yet, according to the consumer awareness institute, 99% of people who join a MLM lose money. Third is the lottery, which I talked about yesterday. According to moneyunder30.com, “A mass study on the lottery's net impact on society found that “the percentage of income spent on the lottery is significantly higher for players with low family incomes and low education,” hence the lottery's ignominious nickname: “a tax on the poor.” Phony job listings, which have become more widespread with technology and work from home trends. The scam works something like this: Someone reaches out to you and They either say “no experience necessary” or that you'd be perfect for it, and since they want to fill the role right away, they'll just do the interview via a chat window. Before your start date for your high-salary role, they'll need to add you to payroll and benefits – so you'll need to pass along your W-9, 1099, and/or a scan of your ID.” You can probably guess what happens next, now that they have your identity information.  Illegitimate online business courses…”Bad online courses always seem like good investments upfront. They're taught by people who've “made it” in the industry and who promise to tell you all of their “best money-making secrets.” They're also sold to you at a weirdly high discount (e.g. 97% off) and sometimes, you even have to apply to be in the course. But crappy online courses aren't just dangerous due to high cost and missed expectations – they can teach you the wrong things that actually hinder your progress and take months to unlearn.    That's it for today.
