A weekly podcast featuring addiction and mental health experts discussing real issues and real successes from within the world of recovery!
The Talksicology podcast is truly a game changer in the world of podcasts. It has quickly become a weekly event that I eagerly anticipate, as it provides not only entertainment but also deep emotional fulfillment. This podcast has left a profound impact on me and has become one of the best things to happen to me in recent memory.
One of the best aspects of The Talksicology podcast is its ability to tackle complex issues in a way that is easily digestible for listeners. The hosts, Jason and Joseph, have an incredible talent for breaking down difficult topics surrounding addiction and making them accessible to the audience. Their ability to simplify complex concepts without sacrificing depth is truly commendable. Moreover, their discussions are not only educational but also thought-provoking and eye-opening.
Another aspect that makes this podcast stand out is the entertaining nature of the hosts. Both Jason and Joseph have captivating personalities and bring a level of energy and charisma to each episode that keeps listeners engaged from start to finish. Their chemistry is undeniable, creating an enjoyable dynamic that adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the show. It's rare to find hosts who can educate, entertain, and connect with their audience all at once, but they effortlessly achieve this.
While it's difficult to find any major flaws in The Talksicology podcast, one potential drawback could be the lack of diversity in perspectives presented. While Jason and Joseph are undoubtedly fantastic individuals who provide valuable insights into addiction, it would be beneficial to hear from additional experts or individuals with different experiences related to addiction. This could potentially add more depth to the discussions and offer a broader range of perspectives for listeners to consider.
In conclusion, The Talksicology podcast is an exceptional production that deserves all the praise it receives. It offers a unique blend of education, entertainment, and personal connection that leaves a lasting impact on its audience. With its ability to simplify complex issues surrounding addiction while maintaining engaging conversations, this podcast stands out among its peers. Jason and Joseph are a dynamic duo who have created something truly special, and I eagerly await each new episode. I highly recommend The Talksicology podcast to anyone seeking a transformative and enlightening listening experience.

Jason hosts solo, giving him a chance to share the good news that he bought a house! For Jason, one of the biggest factors in his success story was receiving a scholarship to Recovery Unplugged, through the organization MusiCares, where Shireen Janti handled his case. MusiCares is a nonprofit that works to support the music community by offering help with preventative, emergency, and recovery programs. Shireen spent 18 years with MusiCares, and says the best part of her job was being able to say yes to people who asked for help. Shireen and Jason relate their shared experiences in recovery, and growing up with music industry parents. For Shireen, living in Los Angeles in the 70's and 80's was both an incredible experience, and an incredibly easy place to become an addict. When she finally got clean it was with the help of an organization similar to MusiCares, years later she never imagined she would find herself on the other side of the desk, saving lives. What does it take to finally see that you have a support system? What do we mean by, “you teach people how to treat you?” Check out the whole conversation on episode 70 of Talksicology. #RecoveryUnplugged #MusicCares #MusicCommunity #AddictionRecovery #SupportSystem #RecoveryStories #MusicIndustry #Talksicology #SuccessStory #AddictionPodcast
This week's guest Ricky Byrd is a rock legend who played with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. His music and the music of his peers has been a foundational element of modern rock and roll. Likewise the people who came before us in recovery often have an enormous impact on the way we think about getting clean. One of the main reasons to keep coming to meetings is so you can give back and inspire the newcomers who are just starting their recovery journey. Ricky Byrd knows all about giving back in his recovery. Ricky talks about what it was like to be backstage when his band was touring with Aerosmith, and how even in the world of rock and roll, sobriety brought musicians together. In his 36 years sober, Ricky got certified as a counselor and sober coach, and now does work for AllSober.com, a resource website for anyone who needs to find help. “I recover out loud.” Jason and Joseph talk about how they're giving back to their recovery community, from one-on-one interactions, to political work, and how they could become even more involved in the future. #RecoveryTalks #SobrietyJourney #RockLegend #RecoveryCommunity #Inspiration #GivingBack #RecoveryResources #SobrietySupport #RecoveryOutLoud #SoberLife #CleanandSober
On episode 68 of the Talksicology Podcast Jason and Joseph never miss an opportunity to spread some good news and toot their own horns. Special guests this week are Richie Wall and Jason Amato from the band Nolo! This week on the Talksicology podcast, Jason celebrates a very particular type of sober birthday, “it's been 7 years since I started to listen to people.” This week's guest knows first hand how hard it can be to listen to the people around you, and take those first few steps towards recovery. Michelle Smith is an author, speaker, and founder of Recovery is the New Black, a digital community by and for women in recovery. The life she lives now is far from where she started. After multiple hospitalizations, and losing her job to her addiction, Michelle said she had to try something different, but it took a long time to start healing and listening to the people who wanted to help. Michelle said coming from a family of alcoholic doctors, she knew two things, she wanted to help others, and she had a predisposition to alcoholism. After losing both of her parents, Michelle said she didn't really process her grief until she started getting sober, and now she is better equipped to be present for her own kids. Today Michelle is a beacon of hope for so many women seeking community while getting clean. This week on Talksicology Jason talks shop with pro skateboarder, Fred Gall. Fred turned pro with skateboarding company Alien Workshop when he was in his teens, and took off, skating professionally on an international scale. When it came to partying Fred was already out-pacing his peers, and his drug use only increased after a bad injury for which he was prescribed painkillers. Fred and Jason talk about how for a lot of people, the agony of detox can be a huge hurdle in getting clean. But after losing his mom to an overdose, and becoming a full-time caretaker for his uncle John, Fred was determined to get - and accept - real help. Today, he continues his recovery and is still skating! Fred discusses his current sponsor, Metal Skateboards and his new Thrasher video, “Spiritual Healing.” This episode is for anyone who knows what it means to feel like shit, and keep going anyway. Jason is solo hosting Talksicology this week, as Joseph is busy running three Recovery Unplugged facilities. Even though we miss Joseph, we're glad to have an expert like Jason for our special guest Emily Cohen! Jason and Emily relate about their different experiences with addicted family members, and their very similar experiences with ADHD. Emily has been a therapist and social worker, but says she didn't really find out who she was as a person until she began her recovery journey after years of codependency and PTSD. While both Jason and Emily can talk about their experience with family members who have struggled with addiction, Emily says that sometimes getting sober isn't enough. If you stop doing drugs but don't start working on yourself, you're still going to end up hurting the people around you. So how do you break the cycle? How do you become the version of yourself you haven't even met yet? Finally being in a stable, loving relationship can be a big turning point, but then it's up to you to keep the good going. Tune in to episode 65 of Talksicology for a reality check that will shake you out of your slump, and to hear tips and tricks for how Jason and Emily are working with their ADHD - and over packing for every trip they've ever taken. Jayme talks about her life growing up in a rural village in northwest Ohio, and how even though she wasn't an addict by definition, there are lots of types of escapism, and none of them really help you get to where you want to be. But do we really need to be labeled an addict to get from point A to point B? Jayme, Jason, and Joseph agree: a recovery mindset of constant growth and transformation can be applied to anyone looking to break free from their unhealthy circumstances. Jayme brings up an important theme, which she has also discussed on her own podcast, "Make Time For Your Mind With Coach Jayme,” - What is enough? Have you thought deeply about what “enough” means to you? How do you get yourself off the hamster wheel and start moving forward? Check out Episode 64, "And the Dandelion..." to find out. You know you've come a long way when you're able to ask for help. Jason opens up about asking for help when his mother was trapped in the recent flooding in South Florida, and how his sober community came together to get her out. Joseph says there's a point where you notice your story has become more about your own growth than about the trauma that led you there, and he's glad to realize he is at that point. So, what does healing mean in addiction? Is there a time when learning to drink moderately becomes a next step, or is it better to just stay the course and stay away? What is a freelapse? Bruce says their light comes from trauma, and they draw on the depths of their own struggle to bring that light to others. Bruce first quit hard drugs nine years ago, and is now celebrating 137 days (and counting!) totally sober! Bruce says throughout their life and recovery they've been fortunate to always have someone in their corner. Jason and Joseph talk about their experience with being both sponsors and sponsees at different points throughout their recovery, and how important those connections can be when you're first getting sober. So come listen and connect with us as we bring a little sparkle to this week's Talksicology.
Whether it's a life altering catalyst, or the backdrop to our shopping experience, music permeates every facet of our lives and our emotional experiences. In Episode 56 of the Talksicology Podcast host, Jason Cabello interviews Nathan Green, cofounder of New Level Radio. Nathan talks about his experience working with music in the ambient sense, curating the soundtrack to the modern human experience, both exciting and mundane. Nathan and Jason discuss the importance of music as a connecting force. Often the connection is positive, as Jason illustrates in his recovery story about using music to describe his mood when he was feeling too low to articulate it. But what about music's unique ability to dredge up dark feelings from the inky depths of your subconscious? It turns out sometimes our negative emotions have a lot to teach us too. Jason and Nathan agree that it's never too late to face those feelings, try to turn your day around, and see where you go from there. Today's episode has a special surprise guest who just might be the center point in the Talksicology web of personal connections. Tune your antenna to look for the good in the world, see if Talksicology can be your “positive point” today.
This episode is for anyone who might be nostalgic for the legendary underground raves of the early 2000's - but without the hangover. Special guest Dan Martin aka Dan Doormouse, is a renowned DJ and pioneer in the hardcore techno/breakcore scene - and possibly the godfather of Dubstep?! These days Dan is sober, focusing on running his gym, and just put out a new album! Jason and Dan met while Jason was a different type of host - a professional party host, paid to manage the chaos of the South Florida nightlife. Dan and Jason recall their days partying in the Miami club scene, and how sometimes sobriety can feel both immanent and impossible at the same time.
This episode's guest is Niki DuBois, an advocate, therapist, and eating disorder specialist who works with both adults and adolescents. Niki talks about her time in recovery, not only for substance use, but for an eating disorder as well. Nicky says the overlap between the two issues is significant, “more than 50% of people who struggle with an eating disorder struggle with substance use disorder.” Now Niki uses her personal experience to help her clients navigate recovery with knowledge that she says was simply not available during her time in treatment. Welcome back to the most Ninja Turtle heavy podcast about recovery on the airwaves today. In episode 53 of Talksicology, special guest Tyler Cricchi joins to talk about his journey into sobriety, answering some of the big “then and now” questions since getting clean. For Tyler, finding his perfect treatment match at Recovery Unplugged was a major turning point. Incorporating music into his recovery program was motivating for Tyler, and a way to keep him engaged and invested in treatment. What else can music do? Joseph talks about collecting records and the rare album he just got in the mail all the way from the UK. Jason remembers when he first discovered break-dancing, and how it changed his taste in music forever. Like Tyler, Jason also came to Recovery Unplugged after dozens of attempts to get clean at other recovery centers, but said music does make the difference. Joseph and Tyler talk about their experience representing RU at some events they'd consider pretty “far from recovery.” Tyler answers the real questions newly sober people want to know; What's it like to go to a biker rally early into your recovery? What is a reasonable response to a stranger dousing you in vodka? And most importantly…does acapella f*ck? It was a rough road to where he is today, but now Tyler is happily married, loves music, dirt bikes, and being a dad, and he's glad to share his story to anyone looking for a way forward. ---- Talksicology is Sponsored by Recovery Unplugged. In this episode of Talksicology Joseph and Jason talk about what they thought the future would look like when they were kids. (Spoiler: 2023 is not as much like The Jetsons as you might have hoped.) Musician Ricardo Gonzalez, drummer for Lance Herbstrong, and Chicago Afrobeat Project joins the show to talk about his sobriety and the long road that led him there. Have you ever been so excited to see a band only to leave the concert with no memory of the show at all? Joseph talks about his experience missing out on Tool when he was too drunk to remember he saw them at all, and Ricky says he really missed out on some of the best acts at Lollapalooza by partying backstage. Ricky discusses his childhood, how he was a band-nerd, and an academically gifted kid who turned to drinking and smoking to cope with his mom's cancer diagnosis at a young age. Being a popular kid, running in different social circles made it tough for Ricky's friends to notice when he wasn't around, or wasn't doing well and his addiction persisted into his adulthood. Ricky never lost his musical talent and could still play drums, even when he was too drunk to walk, but the wakeup call came when he was fired from one of his bands for being too drunk to catch flights to their gigs. Today living the new future he created: sober, playing music, practicing yoga, anger management, working as a sous chef, and becoming the best version of himself.

Carrie grew up outside Houston, Texas, in a two-bedroom trailer with her parents and 4 siblings. She recalls a lot of drinking in her family. Her childhood memories start to become clearer around her early teenage years. Carrie had her first drink at age 12. She recalls how it changed her feelings, and she knew she would do it again. She recalls searching for someone to care for her and something else to change how she felt. Carrie later moved to Austin, spent a month using substances, and attempted to end her life a second time. Carrie's sponsor helped her get into treatment, where she completed 28 days. Carrie started to take her recovery seriously when she moved back to Houston. She worked the 12 steps and spent time with other women in recovery. At 5 years sober, Carrie received a bipolar diagnosis and made some drastic life changes. She started eating clean and working out. Today, Carrie participates in bodybuilding competitions. Although she says she still struggles with mental health, it's much better now that she's sober.
