Ricky Byrd's new song “Transistor Radio Childhood” stopped me in my tracks.
This second part of the monthly new release series probably should have been titled after the final song of the show. Former Blackhearts guitarist Ricky Byrd’s “RnR’s Demise (Has Been Greatly Exaggerated)” certainly matches the philosophy of The Ledge, and the fact that month after month we provide over four hours of newly issued tunes is certainly proof. Again, we have a number of “friends of the show”, including White Rose Motor Oil, New Brutarians, Geoff Palmer, and a whole set of tracks from Rum Bar Records. There’s also the return of The Memories, The Minus 5, and Throwing Muses, along with new bands (at least to us) such as The Roxies, Midlife Crisis, Dead Bars, and Creem Circus (love the name, btw). Also, just a note that due to an upcoming medical procedure there will be now show next week (and possibly the following week). Rock 'N Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Byrd Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Hanging out with Rock'N Roll Hall of Famer, Ricky Byrd, is like going home. Back to the days… when we were both in a daze. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café on Bleecker Street, Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage as lead guitarist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, playing those iconic riffs in the fab MTV Music Video Days... when there were ashtrays on restaurant tables, and MTV played music videos. Just found a great pic of Ricky and Elliot Easton sitting in on our tiny stage in '87ish. All those years ago, and yet how fun to have seen Elliot play live last week with The Immediate Family and Zoom tonight with Ricky. One big difference, both Ricky and I are sober. 36 years for him, and the last many, being of service and giving back with his time, and his music. His current passion, partnering with AllSober.com to aid those struggling with addiction to gain inspiration from their sober heroes. He treated us to his Ain't Gonna Live Like That No More to punctuate the point. Ricky received the Drug-Free Heroes Award, presented by the Foundation For a Drug-Free World, The Faces and Voices 2019 Voice of Recovery Award, and the 2019 Italian American of Distinction Award, presented by Governor Cuomo, for his work in recovery. This Rockboy walks his talk. Old friends, it was an easy breezy walk down memory lane, littered with one-liners, and rim shots. Ricky may be a rocker but he's a Borscht Belt comic at heart. Fabulous stories about touring with Graham Parker, Roger Daltry, and Ian Hunter, the thrill of playing THAT riff from All the Young Dudes, having Simon Kirke of Bad Company behind him hitting those beats, backing Brian Wilson, sitting next to MeatLoaf watching his hero Jeff Beck, both of them weeping. We talked quite a bit about Beck, and Townshend, Eddie Van Halen, John Mayer, Albert King, the old days of the Filmore East, The Academy of Music, the Humble Pie, J Geils Band, and Black Oak Arkansas show we both were at when we were babies. Speaking of the Babys, we talked John Waite, Ricky's old, my new friend, and his hysterical speech whilst being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. Why she didn't much react behind him, and looking past the front row where Paul and Ringo, his raison d'etre for becoming a musician sat with Funk 49s, Joe Walsh. And then, sharing the stage with them - and his great interactions with both Paul and Ringo. Ricky's fan love for his heroes is so relatable and fun to witness. Ricky's Rhapsody in Blues - An Instrumental Tribute to Jeff Beck is spectacular as are his other WIcked Cool released singles, Louanne, Alien, and Glamdenic Blues, and they're available here: https://www.rickybyrd.com We got the story behind each and why he requests we download rather than stream. I did as soon as we got off the interweb. I adore my old friend. I so enjoyed every second and every word of this conversation. It was such a treat to spend time again in his great company. On today's show, guitarist, singer-songwriter and recovery troubadour Ricky Byrd shares personal stories and commentary about rock and roll, fame, addiction, social media and more. Also, Ricky plays a live acoustic version of AIN'T GONNA LIVE LIKE THAT NO MORE. GUEST OVERVIEW: Ricky Byrd is a rock and roll guitar player, singer, songwriter and producer. He is best known for being a former member of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, a band that was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. He is also a recovery troubadour and keynote speaker who uses music and his personal story to inspire people struggling with addiction. He has released four solo albums, the latest being SOBERING TIMES in 2020. He has also performed or collaborated with many famous artists, including Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder. https://www.rickybyrd.com/
New York born, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, guitarist /singer- songwriter Ricky Byrd (inducted in 2015 with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts), has had a career in music, spanning more than 40 years. He spent over a decade as a member of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts where he contributed music and background vocals to two platinum albums, I Love Rock 'n Roll and Up Your Alley, the gold certified Album, and four others for the band. Although best known for his time spent with The Blackhearts, Ricky has also recorded and played with Roger Daltrey, and toured with Ian Hunter and Southside Johnny. He has shared the stage with music royalty including Paul McCartney, Ringo, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Dion, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Page, Graham Nash, and Elvis Costello…to name just a few. While the lead guitarist is grateful for all his many musical achievements, Ricky often says one of his greatest gifts came about in 1987 when he started his journey in recovery. He's been clean and sober ever since, doing whatever he can to help others recover. It's his passion and what he's most proud of. Ricky began combining music with recovery in 2012, when he co-wrote a song with his friend, Richie Supa. The two wound up writing what is now considered a recovery classic “Broken Is A Place.” He wrote a second song, and then a third, and he didn't stop until the seeds of his 2017 Clean Getaway album were planted. Today, when he's not performing shows, he visits treatment facilities with his guitar and performs for residents. He also does a great deal of public speaking to help as many people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction as he can. Ricky has a new single out now – "Louanne" his first in many years that is unrelated to recovery . Ricky says, “My last 2 records “Clean Getaway” and “Sobering Times” had lyrics that spoke to the issues of addiction and recovery. With this new batch of tunes that I'm releasing as singles, I was consciously staying away from that subject matter. 'Louanne' started with the riff and chords, as do most of the songs I write. Then I start to mumble words and fool with a melody. As I was going through the usual process I blurted out “Louanne.. if anybody could you can.” Then came the line“Why don't you go on and get yourself right .. Louanne.” I knew at that point where I was headed! So I guess you can say lyrically Louanne is a song of encouragement for someone struggling with something, and the music is being driven by a nasty RnR riff.” Ricky Byrd joins us this week as our special guest to share his amazing story.
On this edition of Clean and Sober Radio, host Gary Hendler and cohost Mark Sigmund's guest is friend of the show, Ricky Byrd. Ricky was the lead guitarist and backup vocalist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. He has shared the stage with the greatest musicians such as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Steven Van Zandt and many many others. Ricky was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. But his biggest accomplishment is his 36 years of sobriety and all that he gives back.
This week's guest Ricky Byrd is a rock legend who played with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. His music and the music of his peers has been a foundational element of modern rock and roll. Likewise the people who came before us in recovery often have an enormous impact on the way we think about getting clean. One of the main reasons to keep coming to meetings is so you can give back and inspire the newcomers who are just starting their recovery journey. Ricky Byrd knows all about giving back in his recovery. Ricky talks about what it was like to be backstage when his band was touring with Aerosmith, and how even in the world of rock and roll, sobriety brought musicians together. In his 36 years sober, Ricky got certified as a counselor and sober coach, and now does work for AllSober.com, a resource website for anyone who needs to find help. “I recover out loud.” Jason and Joseph talk about how they're giving back to their recovery community, from one-on-one interactions, to political work, and how they could become even more involved in the future. #RecoveryTalks #SobrietyJourney #RockLegend #RecoveryCommunity #Inspiration #GivingBack #RecoveryResources #SobrietySupport #RecoveryOutLoud #SoberLife #CleanandSober
On this edition of Clean and Sober Radio host Gary Hendler and cohost Mark Sigmund planned to talk to long time friend of the show Ricky Byrd, former lead guitarist and vocalist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Unfortunately severe weather on the east coast flooded Ricky's basement and understandably he had other things to deal with on a Friday afternoon. Not to be discouraged, Gary and Mark carry on with an open discussion about coping with addiction, recovery and in this case, adversity, in sobriety. Gary and Mark provide a wonderful hour of comfort and compassion for anyone needing a boost in their journey of sobriety.
We talk to Ricky Byrd - Guitarist, Singer Songwriter and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. Perhaps best known for his time as guitarist for Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Ricky's career also includes touring and recording with the legends such as Roger Daltrey and Ian Hunter as well as sharing the stage with a Who's Who of rock royalty. As a solo artist Ricky has become a Recovery Troubadour with a catalogue of music that not only entertains but offers knowledge and support to those going through addiction. Today he continues to release brand new music with that ever loving Rock n Roll spirit which shines through in this conversation, touching on times in 70s New York, recording in Abbey Road Studios and much more.Presented in association with Affinity Photo - The hottest photo editing software on iPad, Mac & PChttps://affinity.serif.com/photoIntro Music by Johnny Monacohttps://www.johnnymonaco.com/ Incidental Music by Night Fires Please visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://patreon.com/stvpod

Ricky Byrd is a rock and roll guitar player, singer, songwriter, and music producer. For more than a decade, he was a member of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, where he contributed background vocals and music to many albums, including two platinum albums and one gold album. His most famous song might be “I Love Rock 'n Roll,” which was released in 1981. For many years, Ricky lived what might be the “typical” musician lifestyle. He drank, used drugs, and partied hard as he toured around the world alongside other famous musicians like Paul McCartney, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, and Stevie Wonder. But Ricky made a decision to get sober over 30 years ago. Since then, he's created a lot of new music that focuses on recovery and hope. He often performs at benefit shows to raise money for drug and alcohol treatment facilities. He's become a certified recovery coach and drug and alcohol counselor. He frequently leads recovery music groups at treatment facilities around the United States. Some of the things he talks about are how his denial and desire to punish himself kept his substance abuse going, the one thing that inspired him to get help, and how he now helps other people who are struggling with addiction.

How I adore Liberty DeVitto, and would even if he wasn't one of the greatest drummers of all time––Billy Joel's, iconic partner in music for 30 years. I've known Lib for 30-something years and every time I see him it's better than the last. Like fine wine, except neither of us is having any––unlike how it was when we met. We talk about that - his climb to stadium rock, the magnums of red, throwing up on his shoes––before Billy, Mitch Ryder, Vanilla Fudge, meeting Billy, Stevie Nicks, Only the Good Die Young, what Lib brought to it, love and their marriages, and marriages, and marriages, Richie Cannata, Russell Javors, Doug Stegmeyer, The Billy Joel Band, how Billy gave up an enormous opportunity out of love, loyalty and respect for them, and how it fell apart after 30 years of stellar music, fame & friendship. Sobriety, perhaps contributing to Lib's demise. We talked about the silence between them in the years that followed, Lib's resurrection, NYC Hit Squad with Ricky Byrd, The Lords of 52nd Street with the original BJ band, his bestselling memoir, https://amzn.to/2CP8qrg, an upcoming book about Santa https://amzn.to/3dS13li, and, his girls, girls, girls. Wife, daughters, and a new baby granddaughter, that is. The reconciliation with Billy, the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Band— playing and getting inducted into the Long Island off-shoot, and being featured in the rock doc, Hired Gun. Life is grand, better than ever. Lib is happy and grateful. And so much damn fun! Couldn't adore him more. Sitting down with Lib is like going home and being with family. The one you dig. There's no question that Ricky Byrd's had an amazing music career. Touring with Joan Jet and the Blackhearts and giving a hilarious induction speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to recount a few stories from this show, but if you had told me he had a rich love for comedy and it's history woven into all of it I may not have believed you. Thankfully I had the pleasure of having him on Dystopia to talk everything from his incredible career to hanging out and watching the best comics to ever take the stage and shoot from the hip when he was touring. We discuss favorite tv shows, rock legends he's shared the stage with, his early influences, comedy and comedians, and we drop names you'll definitely have to Google if you want to follow along. Most of all we have fun doing it. Enjoy!

WTOP Entertainment Editor Jason Fraley chats with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Ricky Byrd of Joan Jett & The Blackhearts about the Rock & Roll for Children online auction to benefit The Children's Inn at NIH.
This week, we are speaking with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Ricky Byrd (2015 inductee with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts) (and guitarist/singer-songwriter). Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups. Byrd’s mission is to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway (2017) at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them. In our conversation, Ricky shares his own recovery journey and how he went from being exposed to marijauna and alcohol at the age of 13 to now leading men and women on their personal recovery journeys. One of the biggest lessons Ricky learned early on is the power of listening to other people’s stories and being honest with his own thoughts and feelings. Topics Discussed: Recognizing how addiction leads to compulsive, obsessive actions The importance of having a Recovery Toolbox and Positive Coping Skills How community helps us stay accountable in Recovery Meditation as a form of listening and being present in the moment Why Recovery is about listening others and being honest with ourselves Learn More about Ricky Byrd: Website: https://rickybyrd.com Kayos Productions: https://www.kayosproductions.com/ricky-byrd Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Contact Positive Recovery Centers:If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment. I like the comedy with my Rock 'n Roll. Hall of Fame'r Ricky Byrd, delivers brilliantly on both counts. Great stories of his heroes in both worlds. Watching them as a kid on Ed Sullivan, to sharing jokes and cokes at The Pines Hotel coffee shop with Freddie Roman, Dick Capri, and Mal Z Lawrence, to sharing a stage with Stevie Wonder, Joe Walsh, Billie Joe Armstrong, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr, all at the same time. Full circle. I met Ricky Byrd back in the daze… when we were both in a daze… I was booking the Rock’ N Roll Café on Bleecker Street. Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage lead guitarist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, playing those iconic riffs in the great MTV Music Video Days. Ricky has recorded, toured, and/or has performed with Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny, Mavis Staples, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, Paul Shaffer, Smokey Robinson, and so many others, but we got stories about the above mentioned. As we did about Don Rickles, Frank Gorshen, Ron Wood, Keith Richards, Peter O'Toole, My Favorite Year, Hurricane Sandy, Robert Plant, getting sober, recovery, recovery music groups, recovery coaching, and counseling, creating and making music which supports the cause, and, rocks like hell. Following his solo albums, Lifer and Clean Getaway, his Sobering Times just dropped wide and has already garnered two hits on Little Steven's Underground Garage and one Coolest Song in The World. To get a signed copy of the CD and some Byrd swag and for all things Ricky https://www.rickybyrd.com/ In 2017, he received the Drug-Free Heroes Award, the Faces, and Voices 2019 Voice of Recovery Award, and the 2019 Italian American of Distinction Award, presented by Governor Cuomo. So very proud of this rockin' pal. Basically an old Borscht Belt Jew at heart, this RockBoy is all about making music, helping people get sober, reading Dorothy Parker, laughing at Phil Rosenthal, and Entenmann's chocolate anything. As a sober woman in recovery, Ricky’s plight, his passion, his stories, and his hair, are close to my heart. We now party like it’s 1869. My kinda fun. Sobering Times is an honest and intimate reflection of recovery delivered through his signature brand of Rock ‘N’ Roll. As Goldmine Magazine states “...The Faces and The Rolling Stones with a dash of Otis...It rocks like a b*tch. His vocals are the best of his career...early indications make it seem likely that this will be his career statement.” Following the path he carved with his 2017 album Clean Getaway, Sobering Times (produced by Ricky Byrd and Bob Stander) continues his mission to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. On Sobering Times, Byrd is joined by an all-star cast of musicians: Bob Stander (bass guitar, percussion), Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (keyboards/ accordion/background vocals), Steve Holley (of Wings / Ian Hunter / Joe Cocker, contributed drums to most of the album), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel, drums), Rich Pagano (The Fab Faux, session drummer), Thommy Price (Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Mink DeVille, drums) and Christine “The Beehive Queen” Ohlman (vocalist, Saturday Night Live band). Additionally, he collaborated with Richie Supa (“I Come Back Stronger”) and Willie Nile, who duets with Byrd on “Recover Me”, in addition to Emily Duff, who co-wrote “Ain’t Gonna Live Like That.” Fittingly, he also recorded a cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down”. Byrd chose the Sobering Times release date of September 25 as it’s also the 33rd anniversary of the day he started his sober journey. Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them. He dedicates Sobering Times to all of those who struggle with addiction, as well as the recovery warriors who help those who are struggling, those that support a clean and sober lifestyle, and of course, those that still love loud and proud Rock ‘N’ Roll. “As far as third acts go, I couldn't be more grateful for mine,” says Byrd. “I get to use the undeniable power of R'n'R to spread the recovery message to those that are struggling....pretty... pretty... pretty good.”
Ricky Byrd, formerly of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, returns with Sobering Times, his latest in a series of records that reflect on addiction recovery. Byrd spoke with Kyle Meredith about playing to recovery music groups and how the conversation and stigma has changed since becoming sober in the late '80s. The singer-songwriter also discusses making a fun record with a message, his penchant for rough & tumble music, and the possibility of continuing the theme on future albums. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ricky Byrd over Zoom video! On September 25, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer (2015 inductee with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts) and guitarist/singer-songwriter Ricky Byrd presents Sobering Times (Kayos Records).Sobering Times is an honest and intimate reflection of recovery delivered through his signature brand of Rock ‘N’ Roll. As Goldmine Magazine states “...The Faces and The Rolling Stones with a dash of Otis...It rocks like a b*tch. His vocals are the best of his career...early indications make it seem likely that this will be his career statement.”Following the path he carved with his 2017 album Clean Getaway, Sobering Times (produced by Ricky Byrd and Bob Stander) continues his mission to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. On Sobering Times, Byrd is joined by an all-star cast of musicians: Bob Stander (bass guitar, percussion), Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (keyboards/ accordion/background vocals), Steve Holley (of Wings / Ian Hunter / Joe Cocker, contributed drums to most of the album), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel, drums), Rich Pagano (The Fab Faux, session drummer), Thommy Price (Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Mink DeVille, drums) and Christine “The Beehive Queen” Ohlman (vocalist, Saturday Night Live band).Additionally, he collaborated with Richie Supa (“I Come Back Stronger”) and Willie Nile, who duets with Byrd on “Recover Me”, in addition to Emily Duff, who co-wrote “Ain’t Gonna Live Like That.” Fittingly, he also recorded a cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down”.Byrd chose the Sobering Times release date of September 25 as it’s also the 33rd anniversary of the day he started his sober journey. Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them.He dedicates Sobering Times to all of those who struggle with addiction, as well as the recovery warriors who help those who are struggling, those that support a clean and sober lifestyle, and of course, those that still love loud and proud Rock ‘N’ Roll. “As far as third acts go, I couldn't be more grateful for mine,” says Byrd. “I get to use the undeniable power of R'n'R to spread the recovery message to those that are struggling....pretty... pretty... pretty good.”“I Wanna Sing About How Lucky I AmYou’re Looking At One Grateful ManI Should Be Long GoneYet Here I StandHear My Song”Quittin’ Time (Again)TogetherHear My SongTiredI Come Back StrongerStarlit NightRecover Me (feat. For an hour + I forgot there's a pandemic and that I haven't heard live music in 5 months. Liberty Devitto filled the air and my heart with rock 'n roll. One of the greatest drummers of all time, Billy Joel's, Liberty Devitto, now bestselling author of LIBERTY, Life, Billy & the Pursuit of Happiness (https://amzn.to/2CP8qrg ) sat down and banged it out with me. We talked Billy, of course, the reconicliation, the angry years, the beginning, 30 yrs of crazy fun and brilliant creativity, to growing up and cooling down. We talked his whacky, wild, family of origin, his beautiful successful daughters, and his baby, at 3, a Beatles aficionado ... Vanilla Fudge, touring with Mitch Ryder as a teen, arenas, stadiums, Steve Winwood, The Lords of 52nd Street, Richie Cannata, Russell Javors, NYC Hit Squad and Clean Getaway with Ricky Byrd, Little Kids Rock, writing a bestseller and now playing Drive-ins, the new not normal concert venues. Affable, entertaining, warm and real, I love this man, and can't wait to see him and hear him play again. Passion drives music…the deeper the passion, the larger the ripple effect. Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer Ricky Byrd founder of the non-profit Clean Getaway has released Clean Getaway (Recovery Troubadour Records), a collection of 12 songs evoking the intricacies and emotions behind addiction and recovery. The album is available via CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, and all other online stores, with a portion of the sales going to the Clean Getaway .Ricky Byrd has devoted himself to spreading the message of hope and possibilities through Rock and Roll. The mission of the Clean Getaway non-profit is to bring awareness, education, prevention and addiction resources to those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction through the healing power of music. It does this through Concert Events, Music Outreach Sessions and Early Education and Prevention programs. However, as far as Ricky is concerned, Recovery is the special guest here. “An important part of this journey is giving back and spreading the message,” he says. “I do my best talking through music…as a recovery troubadour.”

The lifestyle of the music industry has proven deadly for so many people over the years. Wikipedia lists the names of over 100 pop artists who have lost their lives to overdose since the 60s. Greg’s guest today knows the story all too well having been the lead guitarist for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts during their hey-day. Ricky Byrd was living the life of a rock star until he almost lost his life and decided it was time to get clean. Today, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inductee Ricky Byrd has been clean and sober for thirty one years. Over the last few years Ricky realized he could combine his music and recovery to create songs that are useful to people struggling with addiction. The result is Clean Getaway, both the name of a 501(c)(3) non-profit Ricky founded to reach addicts through the connective power of music, AND a brand new album of songs related to his experience with addiction and recovery. Ricky talks with Greg about his brush with death, recovery and using his platform to give back and help others find sobriety.
Amazing conversation with the always entertaining Jim Beaver, who talked current events, growing up in Texas unfocused, doing a load of theatre, and then the life changer... there were two... and a lot of stories. Jim speaks of his heroes, and why they are, and, the one who fell from grace for lack of grace. What it took to get "there," what he thinks it takes... precious takeaways applicable to pretty much everything ... read, study, never be the reason something goes south, never hold up the action (post-show he added, preparedness. Be ready.) We talked Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Justified, Supernatural, Tom Hanks, John Wayne, Norman Jewison. What's next... a new play at Theatre West, a comedic western, The Night Forlorn, Or, Waitin' On Godsford. Coming in March. Spending time with Jim is always time well spent. There were shout-outs to Birthday Boy Rick Smolke, Ricky Byrd's new CD Clean Getaway, intended to help kids stay sober, with The Coolest Song of the week on Little Steven's Underground Garage. PODCAST - S2 E02 - Ricky Byrd by Road To Recovery
I met Ricky Byrd back in the daze… when we were both in a daze… I was booking the Rock’ N Roll Café on Bleecker Street. Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage with Joan Jett ~ Blackheart lead guitarist, playing those iconic riffs in the great MTV Music Video Days. Ricky Ricky has recorded, toured and/or has performed with Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Billy Squier, Darlene Love, Ronnie Spector, Brian Wilson, Steve Miller, Graham Nash, Don Felder, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zant, Mick Taylor, Dion, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Bramlett, Billie Joe Armstrong, Bill Medley, Paul Shaffer, Smokey Robinson and many others. Two years ago Ricky was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. An honor which befalls the very best, and the very few. More importantly, 29 years ago, he got sober. For the past 9 years, using music to help others follow in kind has been his life’s passion, and now, his work. Ricky Byrd’s Clean Getaway, a non-profit he started, provides concert events, music outreach sessions, and early education and prevention programs, to raise awareness about the disease of addiction and to provide resources for those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. More info here: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/rickybyrd As a sober woman in recovery, Ricky’s plight and his passion are close to my heart. We now party like it’s 1869. Basically an old Borscht Belt Jew at heart, this RockBoy is all about rock, bling and egg creams. We talk rock, rock stars, getting high, and getting straight. A lotta laughin' was goin' on... You've heard Ricky Byrd's iconic guitar intro to the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts hit "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" a million times. You've also heard his work with artists like Ian Hunter, Roger Daltrey and Southside Johnny. And you've probably heard his songs as cut by other artists, too. But you've never heard Byrd like this before. After a long career he's recently released his first-ever solo album, the appropriately-titled Lifer, on which he not only played guitar, he wrote and sang the songs, too. The result is a pure slice of good-time rock and roll, shot through with blues and R&B that harkens back to Byrd's own childhood idols. Byrd joins us on Long Live Rock to discuss his new album -- and the state of rock and roll in general.
