SNL. NFL. MLS. 313. You know you've got a good brand on your hands when all it takes is three letters or numbers to evoke an image or a moment that millions of people around the world recognize. But whether it's a super quotable comedy sketch, an unforgettable moment in football (both American and European), or the birthplace of the car and Motown, it can be all too easy to take powerful branding for granted after it becomes so ingrained in our daily lives. But that doesn't detract from just how much time and work goes into building, cultivating, and sometimes revitalizing these brands to the point that they become their industry's standard-bearer. And more importantly, it doesn't take away from the role of strong relationships—old and new—in defining these brands and businesses. In this week's episode, host Anne Green catches up with old friend and former colleague Howard Handler, President of 313 Presents. Howard provides an engaging overview of his journey from growing up in Detroit to playing key roles in major brands across industries, including Quaker Oats, Lorne Michael's Broadway Video, the NFL, and Virgin Mobile USA. Now back in his hometown, Howard is dedicated to nurturing Detroit's dynamic entertainment scene through 313 Presents—further illustrating his commitment to fusing narratives and relationships to build community and ensure the brand continues to captivate audiences and consumers. We also discuss: The challenges and opportunities of adapting to a new industryWhy the ability to sell your brand and tell your story is crucial in opening new doors and career opportunitiesLeading businesses as well as brandsThe city of Detroit as an example of brand revitalizationLessons that businesses of all sizes can learn from disruptive approaches like those of VirginThe joy of maintaining relationships across the arc of your career

On this episode of "A Page in History,” WWE, Madonna's Kiss, Chris Farley, and more! Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for a scoop hotter than an NBC Page wearing their polyester pants in late summer! Our next guest may have shared a smooch with Madonna long before she made headlines at the MTV Video Music Awards! Then he'll talk about his memorable experience watching the royal purple one Prince rehearse before his live television appearance. And most of you know that weathermen and women report in front of a green screen; our next guest spiced things up a notch when the "R" in Green screen took on a whole new meaning. She may have driven off a cliff, but that's not before our guest could give her flowers, you'll hear the sweet story about his connection to Susan Sarandon. He also had the experience of partying with the director of the world's most dangerous band, Paul Shaffer; plus, he did the same with America's larger-than-life comedian, Chris Farley! And contrary to most of America, he has some kind words for OJ Simpson, but not for Bob Costas! If you're a fan of NBC NFL football, you'll want to hear this story! And speaking of sports, Dick Ebersol was the force behind the iconic sports programming on NBC, plus he was the man behind the idea for Saturday Night Live, with a man that powerful, you better watch out for his wrath! You'll hear some scathing stories! And you'll hear how our next guest used to run his tours in a very unconventional way! And how he developed many lifelong friendships! He worked for WWE, Lorne Michael's Broadway Video, UEG, and ElevenO2. We are excited to have this guest share his insights into his Page life and beyond; please enjoy this engaging conversation with Doug LeBow!

The Classic Film: Alison's Birthday (1981) "A young girl is subjected to a reign of terror so that her soul can be transferred to the body of an old crone” (IMDb.com). Alison's Birthday is an Australian mash-up of concepts from other, better movies, but don't miss the charming forest for the trees. The Modern Film: Book of Monsters (2018) "Sophie's 18th birthday becomes a bloodbath when monsters descend upon her house and start to devour the party guests” (Epic Pictures). Chris & Kelsey awaken a 47-year-old, bitter, undead prom queen and kill their sisters to take their families! The Classic Film: Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II (1987) "Thirty years after her accidental death at her 1957 senior prom, the tortured spirit of prom queen Mary Lou Maloney returns to seek revenge” (IMDb.com). Prom Night II was not originally intended to be a sequel to the classic, slasher original—and it basically still isn't. It's a little bit boring sometimes, but it's also bizarre and deranged in some of the best ways. For a good time, call Mary Lou. The Modern Film: Killer Prom (2020) "After losing her mother in an accident, a teenager and her father welcome a distant cousin into their home. Chris & Kelsey give off good vibes and talk in a very positive manner about plants—but are sure not to feed them! The Classic Film: Little Shop of Horrors (1986) "A nerdy florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed” (IMDb.com). Little Shop of Horrors is wonderful and joyous and great and shut up if you don't like it. The Modern Film: The Happening (2008) "A science teacher, his wife, and a young girl struggle to survive a plague that causes those infected to commit suicide” (IMDb.com). The Happening is famously maligned as confirmation that M. Night Shyamalan's promising star had faded. Chris & Kelsey spend the last show of the year looking for someone to kiss at midnight. The Classic Film: Angel Heart (1987) "A private investigator is hired by a man who calls himself Louis Cyphre to track down a singer named Johnny Favorite. But the investigation takes an unexpected and somber turn” (IMDb.com). Mickey Rourke gets really melodramatic in probably one of his best roles opposite a Robert De Niro the likes of which you've likely never seen before. Angel Heart doesn't really stick the landing, but it's a beautiful and troubling movie. The Modern Film: Midnight Kiss (2019) "Midnight Kiss follows a group of longtime gay best friends and their straight female bestie as they head to a beautiful desert home to celebrate New Year's Eve. One of their annual traditions is to play a game called Midnight Kiss... [but] the group faces another challenge when a sadistic killer wants in on the game” (IMDb.com). The Classic Film: Madman (1981) "A legendary psychopathic murderer stalks a summer camp” (IMDb.com). In a movie that probably thinks it's more serious than it is, this killer—functionally a combination of Jason and Candyman—probably could have been replaced by Bigfoot and been more interesting. The Modern Film: Fear Street: Part Two - 1978 (2021) "Shadyside, 1978. School's out for summer and the activities at Camp Nightwing are about to begin. The Classic Film: Pitch Black (2000) "A commercial transport ship and its crew are marooned on a planet full of bloodthirsty creatures that only come out to feast at night. But then they learn that a month-long eclipse is about to occur” (IMDb.com). Pitch Black tries real hard to balance between horror, sci-fi, and action, but it mostly just succeeds in being badass. The Modern Film: The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) "The wanted criminal Richard Bruno Riddick (Vin Diesel) arrives on a planet called Helion Prime and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey discuss rear-window ethics and sing Rihanna a little too much. The Classic Film: Rear Window (1954) "A wheelchair-bound photographer spies on his neighbors from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder” (IMDb.com). We're back to the Hitchcock classics with one of the holy trinity (according to Chris), a suspenseful thriller that asks, "Will she change for him?" The Modern Film: Disturbia (2007) "A teen living under house arrest becomes convinced his neighbor is a serial killer” (IMDb.com). Over his long career, cinematographer Dan Stoloff feels he's always learning as a DP. Every job, even if it seems small, is an opportunity to meet people and build relationships. Dan's latest project, The Boys season two on Amazon Prime, plays with the idea that superheroes in that world are actually just corrupt and possibly psychotic people with special powers, who behave in ways that are anything but super. They have celebrity, play politics, and use publicists and the media to manipulate their image. A small group of people- “The Boys” in the show's title- band together to expose the superheroes and the corporation they work for. Dan likes that the show stays relatable and not to fantastical. When he came on board for the second season of The Boys, Dan knew he wanted to change the look as the story moves forward. The first season presented a slick, neatly packaged corporate world for the superheroes which was shot with a Steadicam, while the grittier world of the regular guys who are trying to expose and take down the supers was done handheld. For the second season, the two worlds have started to clash and unravel, so Dan gave everything a more ragged look. He decided to adhere more closely to the graphic novel of The Boys, sometimes using black silhouettes and contrasts such as subtractive lighting, positioning the actors against a dark background. Dan also enjoyed that season two presented a variety of scenes to shoot with different cameras, equipment, lighting scenarios and lenses, such as a big-budget hero movie, newscasts, an awards show, a country farmhouse and a gritty basement. In Dan's early career, he moved from Boston to New York, after having shot several claymation films. He began shooting comedy projects for Broadway Video, Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michael's production company, and got a call to shoot The State, a 1990's MTV sketch comedy show shot on 16mm. But Dan hadn't considered television as a serious place for artistic expression until The Sopranos opened his eyes to the possibilities of a quality series. By then, the mid-budget independent features that Dan had worked on started to dry up, and he began seeking out jobs on television series. After landing his first television series, Memphis Beat, Dan found he likes the precision, continuity, and security of TV. He went on to DP the show Fairly Legal and then worked for nearly five seasons as the cinematographer of the USA show Suits. On Suits, Dan learned a lot about shooting through multiple levels of glass, playing with reflections and bouncing outdoor light to make it look more natural even within an office building or conference room. Prior to The Boys, Dan shot season six of The Americans on FX. In season six, more of The Americans takes place in Russia, and some of the street scenes and exteriors were actually shot there, though most of the interiors were shot on a soundstage. Dan wanted to differentiate between the two countries, keeping the colors to a green and cyan palette for Russia so that it felt cold, while in contrast the American scenes were shot in full, rich color. Joel Friedman left Madison Avenue in NYC to go from Ad man to Executive Producer and writer in Hollywood. Along the way he learned that being authentic matters, being found while being not being authentic will always bite you back (he is authentic but not so some who have auditioned for him), and why he wants to produce something with "legs." On this episode Joel shares with me how he has embraced the changing world and face of TV, what drives him, and how to get your message out there while staying true to yourself. Hint, it really isn't that hard as it is made out to be. Joel also talks about finding the story in all he does. Joel Friedman is an Executive Producer who has show run, developed written scripted and unscripted series. He has partnered with and developed series for companies such as Mark Burnett, Bunim Murray, Fremantle, Next, Spike, NBC, Bravo, Broadway Video and Kenan Thompson of SNL as well as for other networks and production companies

The Modern Film: ParaNorman (2012) "A misunderstood boy takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse” (IMDb.com). Don't be like seemingly everyone in 2012 and sleep on this beautifully-animated family horror movie with a heart. Audio Sources: "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" produced by Nickelodeon Network, et al. Chris & Kelsey will show you a killer hillbilly! The Classic Film: Idle Hands (1999) "A teenage slacker's right hand becomes possessed with murderous intent” (IMDb.com). A beloved teenage comedy-horror, Idle Hands didn't age very well, but it's still way better than the critics gave it credit for. At least the actors are. The Modern Film: Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) "Affable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students” (IMDb.com). A genuinely funny send-up of hillbilly-horror tropes, Tucker and Dale vs Evil should be seen if you missed it the first time around. We're playing the new horror game, Man of Medan, right now and will be sharing the video as soon as we can! Keep an eye out! CW: Alcoholism, Child Abuse, Spousal Abuse, Filicide, Suicide It’s our 100th episode on Pod Sematary! And a Double Feature! Chris & Kelsey watch one of the greatest horror movies of all time based on one of the greatest books written by one of the greatest horror authors of all time! And then we see the 4 1/2 hour miniseries adaptation that the King likes better! The "Original": The Shining (1980) "A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future” (IMDb.com). Stanley Kubrick made what is, in Chris' opinion, his best film with The Shining, but how many points does it lose for being a notoriously bad adaptation? The "Remake": Stephen King's The Shining (1997) "A recovering alcoholic must wrestle with demons within and without when he and his family move into a haunted hotel as caretakers” (IMDb.com). ABC's miniseries is much more faithful to the book, having been written by the man himself, but does its accuracy hurt its potential as good television? Get more at podsematary.com! It’s Shark Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey celebrate their nation’s Independence Day by trekking to the beach to become shark food instead of doing the sensible thing and staying indoors at all times! But it’s okay: they’re fighters! The Classic Film: Jaws (1975) "When a [great white] shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it's up to the local [police chief], a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.” (IMDb.com). I mean… it’s Jaws. This is one of Chris’ favorite movies of all time, so watch it for him, won’t you? The Modern Film: The Shallows (2016) “A mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills” (Sony Pictures Entertainment). The Shallows is more survival-thriller than the adventure-drama of Jaws, so it avoids becoming just another Spielberg wannabe. Come to this one for the beautiful landscapes and the badass silliness of the scenarios instead of quality storytelling and you may be pleasantly surprised. Get more at podsematary.com! CW: Suicide, Torture, Graphic Discussion of Rape and Murder It’s the end of another school year on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey are getting intellectual with two horror movies about school that you have to read! The Classic Film: Thesis [Tesis] (1996) "While doing a thesis about violence, Ángela finds a snuff video where a girl is tortured [to] death. Soon she discovers that the girl was a former student in her [college]" (IMDb.com). This 90s foreign classic comes to us from Spain and asks the important question: "Should filmmakers strive to give audiences what they want when what they want is violence?" The Modern Film: Kill Me Please [Mate-me Por Favor] (2015) "Barra da Tijuca, West Side Zone of Rio de Janeiro. A wave of murders plague the area. What starts off as a morbid curiosity for the local youth slowly begins to spoil away at their lives. Among them is Bia, a fifteen-year-old girl. After an encounter with death, she will do anything to make sure she's alive" (IMDb.com). This Brazilian/Argentine festival darling has a lot to say about growing up as a young woman in the modern day. But is its dreamlike beauty and emotional metaphor enough to make up for a lack of… anything else? Get more at podsematary.com! Guests are invited to stay the night in this haunted abode in exchange for $10,000! Are the ghosts (and scary, floating maids) coming for you next? Then it's on to the remake from 40 years later, *1999's* House on Haunted Hill! CW: Rape, Suicide, Miscarriage It's all haunted dolls on this week of Pod Sematary! First up is the 1989 Full Moon classic, Puppetmaster! Or is it Puppet Master? THE Puppetmaster? Oh, don't worry, we solve this one definitively. This movie is a poorly-paced and edited mess, but we love it. Let us tell you why. Then on to the SEO Nightmare itself: 2016's The Boy. It's a movie full of great ideas that don't taste great together, plus fake jump scares and a failing visual motif about being watched. Find out what makes Chris ask, "Is Brahms possessed by a worm from Hell?" You know what, maybe just watch House of the Devil instead. Plus: --We decide once and for all if American Psycho counts as a horror movie --Kelsey tells us how she really feels about Cannibal Holocaust --We discuss if one can ever truly be friends with people who like Torture Porn. --And so many Ruperts! Critics and audiences agree, NY-based writer and stand-up comedian Michael Che is a star on the rise and a shooting star at that. This year he has already been named as one of Rolling Stone’s 50 Funniest People in 2013. Michael Che makes his Edinburgh Festival debut this year with his hour long show ‘Michael Che – Cartoon Violence’. His comedy uses humour to identify humanity in the most controversial actions. Whether it is a story about his friend “Homeless Dave,” or tackling relationship issues and why “like” is better than “love”: “People kill their loved ones all the time. Nobody ever kills people they like, though. Nobody’s watching you sleep through your bedroom window because you’re ‘pretty cool.’” Che’s act also digs deeper than the seemingly common topics he addresses by providing keen, yet jovial insight into larger issues like race relations, gay marriage and world hunger. A native of lower Manhattan, Che applies street culture to world issues with a delivery that The New York Times describes as "a reflective, laid-back stage presence with jokes that draw as much from his city upbringing…as from blunt, insightful points that bring the abstract into focus.” In March this year, Che was brought on as a writer for two instalments of NBC’s iconic Saturday Night Live. His romantic comedy parody “She’s Got a D!%k,” starring that week’s host Justin Timberlake, was a highlight of the March 9th episode. Che appears weekly on Vh1’s Best Week Ever and was featured on John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show on Comedy Central, Money from Strangers on MTV and as a recurring contestant on IFC's comedy game show Bunk. This year, he will be featured at The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Comedy Central’s South Beach Comedy Festival, The Moontower Comedy Festival, and Bonnaroo. At the end of last year Che made his Late Night television debut performing stand-up on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman. Also in 2012, he created, wrote and starred in the original web series “The Realest Candidate” on Broadway Video’s YouTube channel, The Above Average Network. Che was crowned the winner of the New York’s Funniest Stand-Up competition at the 2012 New York Comedy Festival, and both Time-Out NY and Comedy Central have listed him as one of their "Comics To Watch." He headlines comedy clubs and colleges nationally and internationally. - Sara Shulman is the Founder and Editor of Comedy Blogedy, TEDxUCL speaker on 'The Power of Funny', former Head of Comedy at UCLU Rare FM and produces the Humour Me Comedy Podcast. On today's episode we talk to two of the three creators of the insane webseries Teen Wheels. Dan Klein is currently a writer for the Onion and their Get Out of My Face videos and used to write on Sportsdome. He's also ¼ of Pangaea 3000, one of the best sketch groups in the city. Kelly Hudson is a editor at College Humor and previously worked at Broadway Video, ONN and Vice. She's also a UCB performer and can be found acting for the house sketch team Beige and writing for their video group Scraps. Teen Wheels is one of our favorite webseries, and Dan and Kelly walk us through how it was made, and along the way we talk about the meaninglessness of our lives! Plus! Come see Beginnings live at UCB East on 3/11 at 6pm. We'll be talking to How Was Your Week's Julie Klausner and The Daily Show's Elliott Kalan! Certified Laffs™!
