This week on Talksicology Jason talks shop with pro skateboarder, Fred Gall. Fred turned pro with skateboarding company Alien Workshop when he was in his teens, and took off, skating professionally on an international scale. Fred says there's not a lot of money in pro skating but there are a lot of people who want to party with you. When it came to partying Fred was already out-pacing his peers, and his drug use only increased after a bad injury for which he was prescribed painkillers. Fred and Jason talk about how for a lot of people, the agony of detox can be a huge hurdle in getting clean. But after losing his mom to an overdose, and becoming a full-time caretaker for his uncle John, Fred was determined to get - and accept - real help. Today, he continues his recovery and is still skating! Fred discusses his current sponsor, Metal Skateboards and his new Thrasher video, “Spiritual Healing.” This episode is for anyone who knows what it means to feel like shit, and keep going anyway. Today we welcome Spclnch back on Delayed, this time with a track from Alien Workshop, the upcoming EP from Russian artist R.Hz, who has been in form lately, with multiple releases throughout 2022. Spectrum, the A1 track, serves as the perfect opener. With a brooding, efficient and enticing intro, the track's percussion and bassline gain traction and become more and more powerful as the track goes by. The track's moodiness and dark, eerie aura make it a perfect piece for any warm-up set puzzle. Spclnch has become a consistently reliable source for minimal-leaning dubby house, breaks and techno, and this EP extends their streak and cements their status even further. We are excited to listen to and support Spclnch and R.Hz's future endeavors. The Alien Workshop EP by R.Hz will be out on spclnch, both on vinyl and digitally, on February 2, 2023. write up by: https://soundcloud.com/sabro96 https://soundcloud.com/r-hz https://www.instagram.com/r.hzdub/ https://soundcloud.com/spclnch https://www.instagram.com/spclnch/ www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_itsdelayed_ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed

Mikey Taylor was a pro skater as he was sponsored by DC Shoe Co, GoPro Cameras, and Alien Workshop while touring the world. He is currently the president of Commune Capital and was a Co-founder of Saint Archer Brewery. Before his heyday, Mikey wasn't always the best skater when he started out. Out of the very small group of skaters he was in, he considered himself the worst. Practicing everyday for over a decade, Mikey Taylor eventually ended going pro.Now how does a pro-athlete go from skating on a professional level to making a company that sold for 7 figures? Mikey Taylor and his partner thought of the idea of creating an alcohol beverage company, Saint Archer Brewery, and promoting it themselves with their personal brands. They didn't know anything about creating a business plan or having an exit strategy, and the beauty of this story is that they took initiative with their idea and executed. Just because they had no previous business experience did not mean that their idea wasn't possible. If you guys want to check out Mikey Taylor, you can find him here:InstagramTik TokTwitterYoutubeFacebookCheck out Get The Bag Life and Hit us up!InstagramTik TokLinkedInTwitterFacebookBlogPinterest

Yaje Popson played at Tompkins Square Park as a little kid before honing his skills there as an adolescent. During his formative years, he developed a spontaneity with his skating that can only be achieved through growing up pushing through traffic. He had already shut down much of the city, and was a step away from riding for Chocolate; when he injured his knee circa 2011. This resulted in a trip to Brazil for surgery.   Yaje traveled through South America during his recovery, and discovered gardening, cooking, and Ayahuasca. Upon returning to New York rejuvenated around 2014, he began filming what would become his part in DANY [2016]. The comeback was spectacular; and he’s put out several parts since. In the process, Yaje has emerged as one of the cornerstones of the current generation of Alien Workshop and the newly-reformed Sovereign Sect.   If the criteria for being considered a legend is being remembered for your craft, Yaje has likely achieved that status already. But beyond the flips and grinds, he has a great story of self discovery and overcoming mental and physical adversity to realize his full potential. Lee Smith takes a deep dive into Yaje’s narrative in Episode 11 of Mission Statement.

Let's be real, skateboarding wasn't always as glamorous as the X-Games, Big Air, and million dollar sponsorships. For most, it was an escape, something that bonded people together, and allowed you to define yourself. Nino Scalia was someone who had little stability growing up. Moving from city to city, there wasn't an opportunity to establish roots, or even have close friends - and if it did happen, it was taken away just as fast. When introduced to skateboarding, Nino instantly found something he could grab on to. As his family finally settled in South Philly, it was just in time for Nino to be a part of what became one of the most influential skateboarding cities in the world. With other greats, like Rob Dyrdek, Josh Kalis, Stevie Williams, and Jason Dill, there was a new age of pioneers to push skateboarding forward. Nino's story takes us through that special era and his days of skating (and getting arrested) at LOVE Park, becoming the Team Manager for the legendary Alien Workshop, and later working with Pharrell in developing the Ice Cream skate team. If you want to get a taste of what this was like, Nino captures it perfectly in the indie-film, Street Dreams. Through all that he's has done, Nino will tell you that he was never ready for any of it. There's no perfect moment, or right time. Just go for it, and if you fall, get back on your board and try again. #MamaWeMadeIt See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
