In the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the terror organization that has governed Gaza since 2007, there is a very big divide between Jews living in the land of Israel and those of us in the Diaspora. While Jews worldwide may empathize with their Israeli brethren and rally and pray for their cause, the ones in Israel are on the front lines. What is happening in the Land? What is the pulse of the people? In this very special podcast, I speak with Blake Cohen, dear friend of mine, who traveled to Israel to pitch in and to volunteer and to help. He shares with us the incredible people he met, the amazing stories he heard, and important lessons he learned during his week in Israel. Mastering long-term recovery is one of the most fulfilling and exciting accomplishments one can achieve. It is the culmination of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Long-term recovery is not just about abstinence from drugs or alcohol, but it is also about developing a new way of living. It is about creating a life that is fulfilling, purposeful, and joyful. One of the keys to mastering long-term recovery is developing a strong support system. This includes family, friends, peers, mentors, and healthcare professionals. Having a network of people who understand and support us on our journey can make all the difference. They can provide encouragement, guidance, and accountability when we need it most. Another essential aspect of mastering long-term recovery is creating a positive lifestyle. This may involve adopting healthy habits such as exercise, healthy eating, meditation, or therapy. It also involves finding activities that bring us joy and fulfillment such as hobbies or volunteering. By creating a positive lifestyle, we can reduce stress and anxiety and improve our overall well-being. Today on our panel, we have Blake Cohen published author, substance use disorder professional, personal growth and recovery coach and co-founder of Next level recovery associates. In Blake's words: As was the case for me, so many people who are affected by substance use disorders feel lost in their disease. The disease became my identity so finding sobriety meant I was stripped of that and had to start over. This is the greatest gift recovery offers us. We are given the opportunity to start over and finally become the person that is aligned with our core values. Recovery gave me my identity and taught me that I can be accepted for exactly who I am. Blake Cohen is the National Outreach Manager for Recovery Unplugged, a substance abuse and mental health treatment center based in South Florida. This wasn't always the case.Years ago, Blake was on the other side of addiction, dealing with his own demons. He learned that the root cause of addiction has nothing to do with the substances themselves. Lack of connection with others is the real culprit, and it's made worse by schools, social media, and parenting.Thankfully, a history of addiction doesn't define a person's future. Blake turned his life around, and discovered the formula for Confidence in the process:Be Brave + Put Yourself Out There + Help Others = ConfidenceBlake is the author of 'I Love You More: Short Stories of Addiction, Recovery, and Loss from the Family's Perspective.' Tom’s friend Blake Cohen is here to today to talk about his work, his recovery, and his upcoming book, “I Love You More” which is coming out in June. Tom and Blake have gotten to know each other while being part of a program where they go to schools and talk to students about addiction including everything from vaping to heroin. Blake is the National Outreach Manager at Recovery Unplugged which is a recovery program that includes music as part of the program. Blake and Tom have a lot in common and in this episode, they discuss addiction, recovery, and Blake’s story. Blake also talks about why he wrote his book and what the purpose and format is. They both discuss their passion for helping addicts find a way to recovery in a positive life changing way that only gets better over time. Show Notes [03:03] Blake had a great childhood. Sometimes he thinks he's an example of a person who could never develop an addiction. [03:41] He grew up in Boca Raton, Florida. His brother did struggle with addiction. [04:39] When opiates were introduced in Blake's life, he immediately got hooked. He had surgery on his wrist and got a prescription for pain pills when he was 15. [05:30] He loved the way he felt and took the whole bottle in one night. [06:01] He told his mom that he was in a lot of pain and got more pills. [06:44] When he was older he snorted oxycodone. It turned out his neighbor was a dealer. [07:42] Things evolved and Blake got arrested and went to some treatment centers. [08:13] His family held an intervention and sent him to treatment, and he got sober. [09:02] He majored in Psychology at UCF. He then switched to FAU. [10:06] Geographical change doesn't make everything okay. [11:38] Blake's Mom had back pain, and there were pills around. [13:30] Blake got sober at 25. [16:46] When his family found out everything that Blake was doing, he knew it was time to get sober. [18:15] Blake has always enjoyed writing. He believes in visualization and writing a book was one of the schools. [19:06] Blake's book is for the families of the addicts and for people to learn what it is like to go through addiction. There are three short stories that go into recovery, continued use, and overdose and death. [20:01] The book is called, "I Love You More" and it jumps from the different perspectives of people involved. [20:45] It's an easy to read book that brings perspective and has questions at the end that can be tied into a treatment center. [21:08] In his book, the stories are fictional but the emotions are very real. He interviewed people who have been through these situations. [21:22] This book is a powerful tool that can be used by treatment centers. [23:30] Blake currently works for Recovery Unplugged. It's a really special program that has music infused throughout the program. [23:58] He is the National Outreach Manager and he connects Recovery Unplugged with the community. [25:02] Prior to this he worked as a director of admissions at another recovery program. This is The Do It For Yourself Podcast. Each week I sit down with someone who is doing it for themselves and chasing a dream they just couldn’t suppress. This is often speakers, entrepreneurs, or athletes. They all share one thing in common, they are overcoming challenges and never giving up. Someone who is Doing It For Themselves is not selfish in their pursuit, they are simply chasing a dream or working towards a goal because it is something THEY want to do. They are not forging down a path because society or someone is telling them it’s what they should be doing. My guest this week is Blake Cohen. Blake is living in recovery and also working at a recovery facility called Recovery Unplugged. Blake's story began when he was in high school with friends when he was first exposed to alcohol at a party. After his first experience, he felt as though he "fit in" which was something that he was longing for. Blake found that through all his experiences with substances and alcohol he was finding something that he was longing for, attention and being liked. Blake just wanted to fit in and be liked and he felt like the substances were the only way to do that. Later on down the road, Blake began to chase the "high". He was still using marijuana but he wanted to find that feeling from when he first started smoking and he wasn't getting that from marijuana anymore. Blake began to experiment with painkillers. It just so happened that the person he was getting these painkillers from lived right next door to him. This made it even easier for him to get his hands on the substances he was seeking. This lead to the point where Blake was using every day and he began to feel sick when he stopped using. He didn't realize that he could become addicted this quick, but he felt it. Low and behold his drug dealer neighbor moved away and he actually stopped using at this point. Blake moved back home so that he could finish school and he woke up one morning really craving the pills and so he called around to find the pills where he was now. This was the point where Blake's addiction really took off and he had all of the "typical" behaviors of an addict. He learned how to crack safes, he was stealing, anything he could to keep the sickness away when he wasn't using. Blake had it in his head that he couldn't be an addict because when his drug dealer moved away he stopped so he could stop whenever he wanted. Blake was stealing from anyone and everyone he could just to get high. Blake was arrested and in treatment once and while he was on drug court and being tested he was "clean" from the pills but he was still using alcohol. He made it through drug court and went right back to the pills. Blake knew at this point he could not stop unless someone stepped in to help him. This happened when his dad, brother, and girlfriend had an intervention. They came to his house with a drug test and he lit the test up with so many different drugs in his system. After this intervention, Blake's family sent him away to treatment. He was in treatment for two weeks and that is when his family really figured out what he was doing and what was going on. Blake thought that they were acting just for his good, but he received a phone call from his dad that was his real wake up call. This was Blake's rock bottom and it devastated him but it was what he needed to hear to take this treatment seriously. Blake ended up staying in treatment for a total of 90 days in Minnesota. He then returned home and stayed in some form of treatment for the rest of that year. Blake's now working for a facility in the substance abuse field and he has been doing this for 5 years now. Blake's degree in is mental health but he found his love through watching people go through their recovery process and watching the changes that people have made. Blake's goal now is to bring this disease to light. He wants people to learn about this disease and help people understand that this is not their loved one who is doing these things. Blake feels as though that sharing his story and bringing this to light will help normalize this disease. He wants to show people that there can be change and this isn't a death sentence. I really enjoyed this conversation with Blake and I hope you do as well. Blake's Instagram Recovery Unplugged Do It For Yourself Instagram Support the show here
