Dr. Mayers continues to hold a position as voluntary faculty/instructor in clinical medicine at Columbia University's Center for Family and Community Medicine. She is a licensed physician in New York State and is board certified with the American Board of Family Medicine. Get to know Cristy Garza-Mayers, MD, PhD. Dr. Garza-Mayers is an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and a pediatric dermatologist at Mass General Brigham with an interest in vitiligo. In addition to her work on PeDRA's Early Investigator Committee, she also serves as a mentor through the PeDRA Mentorship Program and has received funding for her research projects through two grant programs. In recent years, there has been an increased effort to expand diversity and representation in space exploration. History was made when Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastatia Mayers became the first Caribbean women to travel to space. Schahaff, originally from the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, won a coveted seat on a Virgin Galactic spaceflight through a fundraising competition organized by Space for Humanity. She chose to bring her 18-year-old daughter Anastatia, who is currently studying philosophy and physics at Aberdeen University in the UK. The mother-daughter pair blasted off on an epic journey to the edge of space aboard Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo Unity. During several minutes of weightlessness, they marveled at breathtaking views of Earth against the blackness of space. Their groundbreaking flight inspired people across the Caribbean and proved that the dream of space travel is attainable for women from diverse backgrounds. Schahaff and Mayers showed the world that the future of space exploration lies in the hands of empowered women who dare to dream big. I always want people to open Dazed and… see things that they can recognise and see things that's aspirational… And I think that's key to a lot of people's success, just being able to reflect a reality,” he says. Miller believes the industries that hindered creatives of colour in the past need to change if they want to remain relevant. “These systems and infrastructures… have to adapt to what we're [industry creatives of colour] doing because this is what's happening right now. For them to be relevant or seem to be functioning, they have to [provide] support in these things that are happening in their city,” says Miller. In this episode we chat with the Mayers, a family of two non-native speakers of Spanish raising their two children bilingual in Spanish and English using an unconventional method. Instead of the more common, one parent-one language method, they would speak in Spanish Monday through Friday and English on the weekends as an entire family. We discuss the benefits of this method such as familial cohesion, cross-linguistic skill transfer, and space for a break from the minority language. It just goes to show, there's no one right way to raise bilingual children!

Noah Mayers has been working in education for over 20 years. He was a teaching artist for 8 years in both public and charter schools, then worked as a woodshop teacher at a private school for a year for before launching Brooklyn Apple Academy in New York City in 2010. Located in the Park Slope neighborhood, Brooklyn Apple is a self-directed learning center for homeschoolers and unschoolers.
