Which 20th-century Scrooge had the following to say about the celebration of Christmas? ‘It gives on the whole much more pain than pleasure… Anyone can force you to give him a present by sending you a quite unprovoked present of his own. It's almost blackmail… Can it really be my duty to buy and receive masses of junk every winter just to help the shopkeepers?' Step forward C.S. Lewis, beloved Christian apologist and children's author, whose splenetic denunciation of ‘the whole dreary business' of Christmas and mean-spirited comments about carol singers are hard to reconcile with his reputation for benevolence. To make sense of the author's views, Damian Thompson is joined by the renowned theologian and C.S. Lewis expert Prof Alister McGrath for a Christmas episode of Holy Smoke. They talk about the influence Lewis had on McGrath's own conversion, the significance of the nativity and the question of whether the Gospel accounts of Jesus's birth are apocryphal. Produced by Patrick Gibbons.

The original KILLJOY was a surprise hit when it debuted in the early 2000s, so it seemed a foregone conclusion that the killer clown would be a new staple in the Full Moon repertoire. But as we see this week, the franchise almost died after the second entry, and was only able to return after a complete reimagining in the early 2010s. We're discussing the next two entries in the KILLJOY saga this week, and we're once again tagging in podcasting great Stevie Webb to offer his expertise in all things murderous harlequin. If you're feeling sad this week then what better way to lift the blues than by listening in to your Happy Hosts, Paul L and Geoff C as they cast their swirly eyes over the sinister goings-on in the dark streets of Terra Alpha in the iconic 7th Doctor story, The Happiness Patrol. Is it a satire? Is it a dig at the Thatcher government? Is it a Kafkaesque exploration of Jungian archetypes with a bunch of sweets?Or is it just a totally bonkers script brought to life by a production team having a lot of fun behind the cameras? One thing is for sure, once you've seen The Happiness Patrol, you won't forget it!So stop being a Killjoy, switch up your brightest smile (don't forget the dimples!) and join us for a commentary that is sure to liven up the rainiest of rainy days!Remember: Happiness WILL prevail!!Send us a text and let us know what you think of our podcast!Support the show Subscribe to Who Corner to Corner on your podcast app to make sure you don't miss an episode! Anika and Liz visit a fabulous resort, where we get to sit by the pool and relax while nothing bad happens and no one is weirdly stalked by their ex-girlfriend. We're discussing Star Trek: Lower Decks episode "The Best Exotic Nanite Hotel", and spoilers, we aren't fans! The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel did not deserve this "My shoulders went up around my ears and stayed there for the entire episode." Jennifer is abusive, and it's weird how the show (and the fandom!) seems to consider this zany and delightful This is not a great season for Tendi's characterisation so far It feels like Mariner and Tendi's arcs ended in season 4 and the show doesn't quite know what to do with them now But also, less than week to the US election and Lower Decks is like, "How about an episode where a Black woman on the cusp of becoming a leader is mistreated and everyone cheers?" Guys. An Apocalypse Now parody? Groundbreaking. Anika: "I apologise to people who liked this episode." Liz: "I don't." How much has season 5 been affected by the industrial unrest across the entertainment industry? There are so many barriers to making good television at the best of times! Also, Liz talks about season 5 of Babylon 5 (sorry, Anika)

Our continuing look at the amazing albums of '84...well...continues. Celebrating its 40th (!!) anniversary is the classic self-titled W.A.S.P. debut. We do a deep dive into the record going into how we discovered it, our fave tracks and the impact it had in multiple subgenres. And of course all the panties it bunched along the way. Where does this amazing album rank with you? I n our "News, Views and Tunes", we discover a sequel to the "Records Collecting Dust" documentary and check out the late, great Killjoy's (Necrophagia) vinyl collection. Musically, we crank some Minor Threat, Cobra The Impaler, Split Dogs, Show N Tell, Death Tyrant and introduce Germany's Snow White Blood in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!

This is a segment of episode 357 of Last Born In The Wilderness, “The Ambiguous Utopia: Fiction, History, & Hope In A Dying World w/ Margaret Killjoy.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/margaret-killjoy-2 Learn more about Margaret's work: https://linktr.ee/margaretkilljoy Fiction, as Margaret Killjoy points to in this interview, isn't good at providing blueprints, it's about finding the aspiration of what to look forward to; fiction is better at asking questions than providing answers. A good piece of creative storytelling can make the reader feel what it's like to live in the “ambiguous utopia” of LeGuin's The Dispossessed or Killjoy's A Country of Ghosts, and take us to a place that may be difficult for us to imagine existing otherwise, as much as we may long for it. Such a creative exercise can help us see what subtle and complex problems may arise in such a situation, hence the ambiguity of the “ambiguous utopia.” Margaret Killjoy is a transfeminine author born and raised in Maryland who was spent her adult life traveling with no fixed home. A 2015 graduate of Clarion West, Margaret's short fiction has been published by Tor.com, Strange Horizons, Vice's Terraform, and Fireside Fiction, amongst others. She is the author of We Won't Be Here Tomorrow, The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion, and The Barrow Will Send What it May.
