It's the end of Season 2 - we are taking a break for the rest of the spring and beginning of summer so that the one of us who now owns a farm has a chance to actually make it into something real, and so the other one of us can do wedding planning things that have, notably, been ignored for the past four months. But don't worry - this episode details how we are continuing to cultivate our communities - both in person and online. So make sure you're a member of our Patreon by paying just $5 per month at www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh . You can also find us on every single social media app @thebarisanklehigh and on TikTok @anklehighpod. We love you, and don't worry - we aren't going anywhere, because the bar is ankle high.
If you follow us on social media you know that we were at the Hands Off 2025 protests last weekend which means that this week we're giving you a sweet little highlight reel of some of the exclusive Patreon extended cut episode content. If you are laughing with us or at us during this week's episode, then head over to www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh to join and get this type of hot goss and sweet tea every single week. We love you!
This week, the gals discuss all the farm life update and how they're continuing the economic boycotts while cultivating plants and community in the world around them. Speaking of cultivating community - why aren't you following us on TikTok where Katie goes live every Wednesday at 4pm Eastern? The ladies discuss going to the Hands Off 2025 protest on April 5th and the other plans they have for managing our lives with ADHD and with a tyrannical government...you know, just hot girl shit. Make sure you're following us on Instagram, FB, Threads, Neptune, Bluesky and Youtube @thebarisanklehigh and on TikTok @anklehighpod -- and if you haven't left us a written 5-star review yet, what are you waiting for? Don't you love us?
Have you ever been tempted to eat a cat? Well, neither have we, but that didn't stop Katie from attempted cat maiming the other night and in this week's episode she tells you all about it. We discuss the ongoing saga of starting seeds, starting sourdough, and how we are continuing to resist and fight against the fascist government trying to take over the world, starting here in America first. The best way to fight back against fascism is to support us directly by joining our Patreon at www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh where for just $5 per month you can get ad free, extended, and video episodes delivered directly to your Patreon app every week! Make sure you join from your web browser if you're on an apple product to avoid the App Store surcharge! The second-best way to fight fascists is to follow us on social media platforms! We're on FB, IG, Threads, Blue Sky, and YT @thebarisanklehigh and on TikTok @anklehighpod - where Katie goes live every Wednesday at 4pm Eastern!
Welp, believe it or not spring is a busy time of year for farmers - and since 50% of this podcast is hosted by a humble farmer lady, there was a time management snaffu this past weekend. As a result, and as a consequence of Gene Hackman's suspicious death, we're sharing this Patreon oldie but goodie from Dysfunction Junction - the bonus episode series. We hope you enjoy! Make sure you're following us on all social media sites - BlueSky, IG, FB, Threads, and YouTube @thebarisanklehigh and on TikTok @anklehighpod. We've got merch at bit.ly/anklehighmerch and you can support us directly by joining our Patreon for just $5 per week at www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh where you'll get extended cuts of our video episodes and audio episodes - both of which are ad free! Be sure to share this episode with everyone you know and tag us in your IG stories when you share the listen link - because, after all, the bar is ankle high.
It's Episode 2 of our deep dive into the heartbreaking, tragic, and totally preventable story of Rosemary Kennedy - this week we get into the dark details (or at least...as much detail as we can find from this family that hides everything) about what happened to Rosemary, why it happened to her, and what it means as we look down the barrel of the Secretary of Health and Human Services being Rosemary's nephew who survived a brain worm, heroin, and a dead bear cub in Central Park just to tell us not to be vaccinated...Do we find a light at the end of the tunnel? Unclear - it could just be the oncoming train. Either way, make sure you're following us on all social media sites - BlueSky, IG, FB, Threads, and YouTube @thebarisanklehigh and on TikTok @anklehighpod. We've got merch at bit.ly/anklehighmerch and you can support us directly by joining our Patreon for just $5 per week at www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh where you'll get extended cuts of our video episodes and audio episodes - both of which are ad free! Look, we needed 2 weeks to recover from our illnesses and figure out what our next steps were, and this week we're bringing you a quick recap of the state of artificial intelligence (AI) and the US federal "government" if you can call it that, before reminding you and ourselves that we need to indulge in as much whimsy as we can find these days. So tune in, turn up, and make sure you share this sliver of joy with everyone you know. Don't forget to follow us on IG, FB, YT, BlueSky, and Threads @thebarisanklehigh and on TikTok @anklehighpod - Katie has been going live a few times a week over on TT so if you want the inside scoop to her feral brain waves, that's where you can find it! Hi folks - we are abstaining from releasing a new episode this week in solidarity with the No Kings on Presidents Day Protests. But - instead of listening a new one from us this week, call your federal representatives at 202-224-3121 and let your senators and congressmembers know exactly what matters to you and KEEP calling. It's free to call and you can call every single day. Hold the line, we will see you next week, because the bar is ankle high.
Enjoy this Re-Release of our original Episode 9 - an episode where we plot revenge against a really really old Catholic Bishop. Welcome back folks it's been yet another freaky weeky but don't worry because Garet & Katie have been putting their brains to work to figure out a way to help build community joy with our little anklet gang here - and it's going to start with a new segment we're going to be adding called Don't Learn It From A Trad Wife - where K&G teach you how to do things like homesteading, raising chickens, growing vegetables, making bread from scratch, making your own butter, and other helpful skills that we think a certain sect of society shouldn't be the sole keepers of. And if you're not already, support your local union and back workers' rights groups! Hold the line, we are here with you and we're not going anywhere. If you want to support us directly you can do that by going to www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh and for just $5 a month you can help Katie & Garet continue to fight against fascism and bring joy in our small little ADHD corner of the world. Welcome back to the continuation of our conversation with Jami, The Neurodivergent Nurse. The three of us get into some conversations about the state of public health, including raw milk and whether or not it's controversial to use a haunted wheelchair for a Halloween costume. The current Federal government is making things feel very dark - so hopefully this podcast and our conversation this week gives you a feeling of community and encourages you to build connections with your neighbors. You can follow Jami on all platforms @theneurodivergentnurse and follow us on all platforms - especially BlueSky and YouTube @thebarisanklehigh. If you haven't already - leave us a 5 star review and subscribe to our show everywhere you find us!
We know this is a really terrible week for everyone - even the folks who are currently celebrating. At the time we recorded this week's episode, the new president had not yet been sworn in, but you can hear in our voices we expected a lot of things to happen - some of which already have. But we're here, and we're glad you are, too. So this week, Katie surprised Garet with a guest host - Jami - the Neurodivergent Nurse - to help us find the happiness in the mundane. We talk about how spaghetti and video games mix, haunted wheelchairs, and using AI for things that are actually helpful! You can follow Jami on all platforms @theneurodivergentnurse and follow us on all platforms - especially BlueSky and YouTube @thebarisanklehigh. If you haven't already - leave us a 5 star review and subscribe to our show everywhere you find us!
Welcome back for another exhilarating peek into the life and times of Katie & Garet and...we're hanging on for dear life, folks. But don't worry, after reviewing how we're managing burnout in our personal lives and some developments on the Farm for Patreon, we dive into a recap of the Curious Case of Natalia Grace - the final chapter! We talk about what the final season of this series showed us about the people who are continuing to take advantage of Natalia, the people who are trying to help her and getting frustrated, and how trauma can rewire your brain and make you susceptible to SIGNIFICANT mental health hurdles. Support our show by following us on all social medias - we're on Instagram, Threads and Bluesky @thebarisanklehigh, we're on TikTok and RedNote @anklehighpod and we're also looking into joining Loops and Pixelfed - so stay tuned to our socials for those account handles as they become available. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It's a new year and we're the same freaks we were a few weeks ago, so don't worry! In addition to the Patreon content including a recap of how to induce chicken blood feuds into any family farm dynamic, the ladies dive into New Years' traditions and how they're approaching resolutions in this new season of life where they're both just so dang busy all the time! Katie and Marv from 'Home Alone' discover what they have in common - hint: it has to do with car batteries, and the ladies take some ableists to task for the sort of microaggressions that a lot of high-masking neurodivergent people deal with all the time, usually without even realizing it. Make sure you're following us on Instagram and Threads @thebarisanklehigh and check out our merch at bit.ly/anklehighmerch and don't forget to join our Patreon or get your friends to join by heading over to www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh. We discuss the health - or not so healthy - aspects of reality TV in general and dating shows in particular - including some dives into Sister Wives, Seeking Sister Wife, and of course, Seeking Brother Husband. Welcome to the continuation of the UHC "Adjuster" saga because now we know who Luigi Mangione is and we're not mad about it. We also discuss the case of Brianna Boston, a Florida mom of two who has now been charged with domestic terrorism for saying "delay, deny, depose" over the phone to a case manager at Blue Cross Blue Shield who was denying her claim - she is now facing up to 15 years in federal prison for repeating the words Luigi identified as the cry of the revolution. We start off this week's episode discussing the news that is dominating the headlines and the internet ever since about 9am last Thursday when the CEO of mega-giant US healthcare insurance company United Health Care (UHC) was assassinated by some random guy on a bike. We discuss the difficulties in healthcare and US health insurance as we've discussed many times on this show before heading into a discussion inspired by our great friend The Neurodivergent Nurse and a recent IG post from her discussing a study showing ADHD women are more likely to engage in high-risk behaviors than their male counterparts. We also do a quick ADHD wedding planning check-in - if you have any wedding planning tips - let us know! Don't forget to rate us 5-STARS anywhere you find our podcast and make sure you're subscribed! Season 2 of The Bar is Ankle High - we're back and as tired as ever with this episode where we discuss how things have been going for two ladies with ADHD who are trying to plan a wedding and start a farm business while still maintaining all the other responsibilities and relationships we've had up to this point. Can you believe it?! It is our 100th episode and we are FINALLY getting our ADHD assessed! Not really - but this week Katie and Garet give each other made up ADHD assessments by asking questions that really get to the heart of living with ADHD as grown ass adult women who have bills and families and jobs. Will you be just as surprised as we were at our results? Tune in to find out. MOST IMPORTANTLY -- we have a huge announcement -- we are changing our podcast format to a seasonal format!!! We are taking a seasonal break starting THIS WEEK and will be back at the end of 2024. HOWEVER - our patreon subscribers will still be getting monthly bonus episodes even in the off-season. So join our Patreon now for just $5 per month at www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh . This new podcast format will allow us to do better and more in depth research and keep us from getting burned out and overwhelmed. With Garet returning to full time employment with a full time baby that still requires attention almost all of the time, and Katie's life getting busier and busier, and our unpaid intern still working full time as our editor PLUS he has an actual job that pays him real human dollars to do - we all thought this was the best way to ensure we continue to give you all the best content in the most consistent manner. This week Garet talks to us about over-stimulation. We've discussed sensory processing disorder but what happens to your brain when you're just overwhelmed by the texture of the chair you're sitting on or how hot you are or how many people are talking at the same time? Well, this week we discuss that and how some super aggressive monkeys near Puerto Rico stopped throwing poop at everyone when they got too hot. And if that's not relatable, what is? Overstimulation has physical and emotional implications and we dive into those aspects of it and we discuss ways to combat overstimulation without medication! This week Garet teaches us all about aphantasia and hyperphantasia - words used to describe whether or not you are able to picture something in your mind's eye and to what extent you can picture something. It turns out - not everyone has a TV show running in their brains like Lizzie McGuire and that can make a difference when you're trying to remember important moments in your life - from happy memories like the birth of your child to really terrifying memories that are associated with PTSD. Garet explains this phenomenon to us and we discuss possible connections to increased rates of PTSD, dementia, and Alzheimer's. We've referenced this topic in almost every single one of our episodes - but we've never actually examined the truth behind the common belief that ADHD is over-diagnosed these days. Katie took over the research this week to answer the question - are there ACTUALLY more people with ADHD these days, or is that just something old farts on social media want us to believe? Katie breaks down the studies that actually objectively measured the incidences of ADHD in children since 1997 and if you're late diagnosed like us, the answer will probably not surprise you. We also take a slight detour into the DONE ADHD president and CEO arrests from last week and what that federal indictment for drug trafficking charges can mean for continuing care for folks who used that app and service. If you are struggling to access your medications, please do not attempt to acquire your medication on the black market. Well, if you're in the United States then you know this year, 2024, is yet another election year. The thing is, even though the presidential election this year guarantees to be a dystopian rematch of the 2020 election and subsequent debauchery including everything from Rudy Guiliani's melting head outside an adult sex toy store and Four Seasons Total Landscaping to another breach of the Capitol Buildings, there's also EVERY SINGLE House of Representatives seat up for grabs as well as a good portion of the senate AND of course your local elections. That's a shitload of voting so we brought in our favorite Legislative Director, Sarah Spellman, who you might know on Instagram as @senatorspellman, or you might recognize their voice from their appearance on our Pride Month episodes from last year. This year, Sarah is bringing their expertise in elections to us to explain basic civics and how to pick a candidate - and also the best way to connect with your representatives so they know about the issues that really matter to you. So tune into this extra long episode and make sure you're registered to vote! We're back with another episode of ADHD Would You Rather! Katie & Garet discuss various scenarios, such as cleaning out a closet vs. rebuilding a wardrobe, drinking coffee with missing elements vs. having perpetual coffee breath, waking up sweaty vs. waking up freezing cold, and being misunderstood vs. unable to explain oneself. They also touch on topics like sticky lip gloss vs. chapped lips and the band Phish. The conversation is light-hearted and humorous, with both Katie and Garet sharing their preferences and personal experiences. In this conversation, Garet and Katie discuss various topics, including plastic surgery, jaw reconstruction and it's impact on facial changes as demonstrated by our tweeny hearthrob, Zac Efron. Remember a few weeks ago when Garet was talking about Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder and mentioned something about the use of dopamine to regulate pain levels? Well, that fun fact stuck in Katie's head in a big way so this week Katie teaches us about the connection between dopamine and pain perception - and can you believe it? It's different for folks who were assigned male at birth than it is for folks assigned female a birth! If ONLY we had seen this in every other study we've ever looked into...wait...oh yeah. We also discuss the effects that chronic pain has on the brain and dopamine production and reception and then discuss that gem of a commencement speech by Harrison Butker - because the bar is ankle high. Welcome to yet another topic inspired by Katie's endless scrolling on TikTok before it gets banned - today we're diving headfirst into Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder, a connective tissue disorder that affects joint stability. Although the video Katie sent Garet was discussing hyperextending your joints and how damaging that can be to your body over time, HSD can actually cause problems with your vascular system, intestines (think Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis), skin, and - you guessed it - your brain! We discuss Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and the connection between hypermobility and neurodivergence - so make sure you listen to the whole episode because we also discuss what these new and developing studies could mean for AFAB healthcare in the future. Well, it finally happened - after 90 episodes our winning streak was broken and we lost one of our recordings. It doesn't matter why, all that matters is that it was Garet's fault and we've probably fixed the problem! In the meantime - this week we are giving you one of our Patreon Bonus Episode Deep Cuts with an episode where we discuss living with someone who has ADHD or being the person that someone else has to live with even though we have ADHD. Katie had just moved in with her boyfriend - the first time in five years that she's lived with a romantic partner. Katie shares the adjustments she and PK have had to make recently and Garet shares the things she's learned over the course of her decade-long (and we'll say successful) marriage. Words of Affirmation, Physical Touch, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Gifts...the Five Love Languages that, in 1992, were the subject of Pastor Gary Chapman's book that was used by Christians and non-Christians alike to help their intimate relationships. But are there only five love languages? And how did Chapman come up with this list anyway? This week Katie dives into the Five Love Languages and what they really mean - and then we talk about what the Love Languages of ADHD are. Welcome back to Part 2 of our series on coping with ADHD at work when you're not requesting or using a formal reasonable accommodation. Whether you aren't formally diagnosed or aren't comfortable requesting a formal accommodation, we have work arounds for you to try out. We discuss using quiet fidget items, doodling, paraphrasing and repeating instructions to ensure we understand, and setting and requesting clear deadlines. No matter what you do for work or where you are on your ADHD journey, your struggles are valid and you are still deserving of respect in the workplace. Make sure you're following us on social media and tell us on today's post on IG what workplace hacks you use to manage your own ADHD! This week Garet tells us all about what to do at work if you're NOT comfortable asking for a formal reasonable accommodation from your employer. We discuss things like how we cope with difficulty sitting still in meetings, struggling to keep track of projects and deadlines, dealing with distractions in the office, and managing time and organization. Katie and Garet discuss their experiences with test-taking, time management, and workplace challenges related to ADHD. They share tips for focusing on one task at a time, using background noise to stay engaged, and organizing emails and voicemails, as well as using YouTube tutorials to learn skills and brush up on skills that maybe your boss thinks you're supposed to know but literally only one person on YouTube and Bill Gates know how to do. And no matter what, remember that you are doing a great job and you deserve a little treat for getting through another workday with ADHD. It's HARD! Have you ever heard that ADHDers are great in a crisis? Or perhaps you have noticed that any time the proverbial shit hits the fan, you're able to handle the emergency with poise and aplomb? Well in this week's episode we explore why ADHD brains are maybe BETTER equipped to handle emergencies than our neurotypical counterparts. There's something in the air and we're feeling it too - the pressure to get that Spring Cleaning Itch scratched. It's a lot of pressure - the stores are FULL of cleaning and organizing supplies, aids, tricks, hacks, EVERYTHING. Yet -- we have ADHD so do those really work for us? As promised, we're back to discuss requesting reasonable accommodations for your ADHD at work. It's a topic that we can talk ourselves out of "deserving" but the fact of the matter is - RAs don't have to be permanent and they don't have to be something you even use every day! This week's episode discusses the statutory framework for the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments - but make sure you check with your own state's disability support office to ensure you're getting access to all the services you're entitled to and always always always - when it doubt, check with an employment law attorney. To our international listeners, we hope this episode will help you get ideas on how to navigate the systems in place in your own countries but ultimately - Katie could not handle researching the laws in other countries given her attempt to understand the EU's VAT system. Everyone is talking about it and SO. ARE. WE. As part of our new regular show-and-tell of our hyperfixations, this month Katie is teaching Garet allllll about the British Royal Family and asks the question that is currently dominating the internet: Where is Kate? Where's Kate Middleton a/k/a Her Royal Highness, Catherine, Princess of Wales. She hasn't been seen in public since Christmas Day, 2023, and since then, we have a royal motorcade heading to a hospital on December 28, 2023, an announcement of some sort of "planned abdominal surgery" that also required cancellation of every Kate appearance scheduled through Easter 2024 that occurred on January 14, and most recently - the photoshop fiasco heard 'round the world on March 10th, we're finally starting to genuinely doubt the safety and security of the Princess of Wales. The first woman to hold the title since the divorce of Lady Diana Spencer and then-Prince Charles (now King Charles) - is the title cursed? Is the engagement ring Kate wore that famously belonged to her dearly departed mother-in-law cursed? Well, it's not featured in that notorious Mothering Sunday photo, that's for damn sure. We are concluding our discussion on Attachment Theory today - sort of. Because this is a topic that Garet could research forever and ever, but while we chose to cut this off and give an overview, Katie also shares a tale of how she made the most wildly unhinged off-the-cuff comment to her optometry technician and her recent eye exam that will make you question everything you know about telehealth appointments. Happy Winter Solstice!! This year, instead of Garet being dressed like Krampus, Katie took over the research and teaches us all about the Newgrange Druid World Heritage Site, Mari Lwyd (pronounced Mah-ree Lloyd) a Welsh tradition that is like Krampus but involves more horse skulls than we're comfortable with. Katie also tells Garet about the famous Feast of the Ass which neither of us have heard of but is apparently a real thing...allegedly. Remember - the days start getting longer as of RIGHT NOW! The end is in sight! Enjoy your twinkly lights and do something today to connect with nature and ground yourself - and maybe dress up like a ghost horse and terrorize your neighbors until they bribe you with booze and food - because The Bar is Ankle High. Remember - all our Patreoners are getting ad-free episodes still - so join now at www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh Short on cash but high on love? Leave us a written 5-star review on Apple podcasts and anywhere else you can find us and make sure you're following us on Instagram @thebarisanklehigh Our merch is available too at bit.ly/anklehighmerch Sources: https://druidry.org/druid-way/teaching-and-practice/druid-festivals/winter-solstice-alban-arthan https://youtu.be/P6XAFJ_FdOA https://celticlifeintl.com/celtic-christmas-customs/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mari_Lwyd https://www.newgrange.com/
Here's part 3 of our current venture into the 4th Trimester and what that means for your postpartum body, hormones, brain health, and everything else. We will absolutely be revisiting this topic in the future as Garet becomes our resident hormone expert, but over on Patreon, ALL of our Patreon subscribers have gotten access to an extended cut of this episode which we know is already super long but can you believe it is even longer?! If you want more of this or you want the bonus episodes - head on over and join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/thebarisanklehigh and keep up with us during the week on our Instagram @thebarisanklehigh.
