Today's True Weird Stuff - Another Icepick To The Brain Rosemary Kennedy was part of the powerful and highly esteemed Kennedy Family. Rosemary was born with intellectual disabilities at a time when children with special needs were highly stigmatized. When she was 23 years old, Rosemary's father ordered her to have a lobotomy. The procedure left her permanently incapacitated, and her family would keep her mostly hidden from the public for the rest of her life. (NOTE: This was originally released as episode #29. We're re-releasing it with a newly added Post Mortem discussion).
It's Episode 2 of our deep dive into the heartbreaking, tragic, and totally preventable story of Rosemary Kennedy - this week we get into the dark details (or at least...as much detail as we can find from this family that hides everything) about what happened to Rosemary, why it happened to her, and what it means as we look down the barrel of the Secretary of Health and Human Services being Rosemary's nephew who survived a brain worm, heroin, and a dead bear cub in Central Park just to tell us not to be vaccinated...Do we find a light at the end of the tunnel? Unclear - it could just be the oncoming train. Warning there is video/images of lobotomies that show blood For over a decade, lobotomies were seen as a miracle cure to mental illness; a simple, cheap, and effective way to reduce overcrowding in mental institutions. Tens of thousands of men, women, and even children received the procedure. Even when it fell out of favor in the late 1950s, Dr. Walter Freeman did everything in his power to keep it going. He performed thousands of lobotomies across the country, which included the sister of JFK, Rosemary Kennedy.
Britain's new government is caught in a series of scandals about freebies, cronyism and ‘cash for access'. And now we have allegations surrounding the recent Taylor Swift concerts in London which might - or might not - be responsible for the downfall of a key Downing street aide. Phil wonders whether any of this really matters, and what it tells us about the state of politics today - and the power of scandal! Then this week's guest Maureen Callahan joins Phil to reveal some of the jaw-dropping stories in her groundbreaking new book on the Kennedys, Ask Not. Portraying the men in the Kennedy family as a series of domineering and abusive sexual predators, Maureen brings to life the often terrible experiences of the women in their lives - and tries to give dignity and agency to some of the victims, women like Mary Jo Kopechne and White House intern Mimi Beardsley. In 1949, St. Coletta of Wisconsin, a non-profit organization in Jefferson providing residential services for people with disabilities, accepted a new resident. This resident had a unique history, however, and the facility would need to implement very specific arrangements. Her name was Rosemary Kennedy, the 30-year-old sister of the current senator from Massachussettes, and future President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. Rosemary's life to that point was one of both privelage and hardships, as physical and intellectual disabilities led to her being bounced around between numerous group homes and boarding schools, as the Kennedy family's ambitions left them unabe to adhere to her needs at home. In 1941, a horrific failed lobotomy performed on her when she was only 23 complicated her situation even more, leading her parents to send their daughter away, and her siblings wondering what had happened to her. Scott and Mickey discuss this heartwrenching story, and Wisconsin's connection to the most influential American family in history. In the opening banter we discuss one of the oldest cold cases in the state finally being solved, and which haunted cemetery in the state is also "one of the most beautiful." Lula Deans Little Library of Banned Books by Kirstein Millar Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she's actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she's challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she's sure the town's readers need. What Lula doesn't know is that a local troublemaker has stolen her wholesome books, removed their dust jackets, and restocked Lula's library with banned books: literary classics, gay romances, Black history, witchy spell books, Judy Blume novels, and more. One by one, neighbors who borrow books from Lula Dean's library find their lives changed in unexpected ways. Finally, one of Lula Dean's enemies discovers the library and decides to turn the tables on her, just as Lula and Beverly are running against each other to replace the town's disgraced mayor. That's when all the townspeople who've been borrowing from Lula's library begin to reveal themselves. That's when the showdown that's been brewing between Beverly and Lula will roil the whole town...and change it forever. Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed by Maureen Callahan For decades, the Kennedy name has been synonymous with wealth, power, and—above all else—integrity. But this carefully constructed veneer hides a dark truth: the Kennedy men's legacy of physical and psychological abuse of women, part of a tradition of toxic masculinity that spans generations and has ruined untold lives. Through scandal after scandal, the family and their defenders have managed to keep this shameful story out of the spotlight. Now, in Ask Not, bestselling journalist Maureen Callahan reveals the Kennedys' hidden history of abuse and exploitation, laying bare their rampant misogyny and restoring women to the center of the dynasty's story: from Jacqueline Onassis and Marilyn Monroe to Carolyn Bessette, Mary Richardson, Rosemary Kennedy, and many others whose names aren't nearly as well known – but rightfully should be. Drawing on years of fierce reportage and written in electric prose, Ask Not is a long-overdue reckoning with this fabled American family, showing how the Kennedy myth and their raw political power has enabled the clan's many predators while also silencing generations of traumatized women and girls. At long last, Callahan also redirects the spotlight to the women in the Kennedys' orbit, paying homage to those who freed themselves—and giving voice to the countless others who could not do the same. Washington, novembre 1941. American neurologist Walter Jackson Freeman had refined Moniz's procedure and developed a non-surgical procedure that could be performed in a doctor's office, which he called a transorbital lobotomy. Freeman's procedure involved inserting a medical instrument similar to an icepick into the patient's orbital socket to sever the neural connections, without requiring surgery, hospital stays, and long recovery times. Touted as a quick, easy, and painless solution to everything from general malaise and occasional depression to schizophrenia and aggressive behavior, the procedure a go-to solution for the very complex psychological problems that have affected countless people for centuries. Unfortunately, while the procedure was effective for a small number of those who received a lobotomy, it was used indiscriminately, often without consideration for the increasingly disastrous outcomes.Today we talk about the tragic and disastrous lobotomy on Rosemary Kennedy and thousands more that occured after it. TW/CW: Graphic depictions of lobotomies, poor treatment of epileptics, the intellectually disabled and people with mental health issues, suicide and suicidal ideationDr. Walter Jackson Freeman II saw the suffering in the asylums in the 1920's and wanted to do something to help. But in his hubris and pursuit of a cure for mental illness, he didn't count the lives damaged and lost due to his (even at the time) highly controversial treatment: the frontal lobotomy. Ever the showman, he did these on the road and in front of audiences with an icepick he'd taken from his own kitchen. One of his most famous patients, Rosemary Kennedy, was left horribly disabled by this killer cure. Featured on the cover of People Magazine is Rosemary Kennedy's tragic story about being lobotomized at 23 and being sent away to live the rest of her years at a convent. Rosemary's story is interwoven with Elizabeth Koehler-Pentacoff's own personal story in the new book The Missing Kennedy. A New York Times bestselling author, Elizabeth is the niece of the nun who took care of Rosemary Kennedy for 35 years. The inspiration behind The Special Olympics and The Best Buddies program, Rosemary led a very meaningful life because of how her family responded to her misfortune. Revealing a very personal look into Rosie's tragic yet inspiring life, Elizabeth, who couldn't imagine a "Rosie-less world", is available to share the impact Rosemary had on her life and the life of so many others.

It's encouraging when a man starts the conversation advocating for the rights and freedoms of women. Hosts Rose and Hannah, both female empowerment activists, interview Nihal who firmly believes that women should have equal rights to men in all areas of private and public life, including education, employment, and political participation. He donates money to a family in India to send a girl to school. Hannah puts women's advocacy into context and offers methods to speak up and support women. She launched her own charitable organization, Hannah's Project, which is dedicated to the empowerment, education, and equality of women through education and literacy. Rose was inspired by many courageous women including Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Tarana Burke, and Masha Amini and offers a background on the movements formed around their advocacy.. Sharanya joins the conversation with a tribute to literary pioneers in feminism, Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. She also sheds light on the horrific lobotomies that were performed on “hysterical” women, such as Rosemary Kennedy. Women and men are equals. It is the responsibility of every person in every nation to eradicate the patriarchy and embrace equality for all. “There's something so special about a woman who dominates in a man's world. (Photo Amy Ní Fhearraigh by Kip Carroll) Rosemary Kennedy has often been referred to as the "missing Kennedy". She was the sister of former US President John F. Kennedy and despite been part of one of the most famous families in American politics, very little was known about Rosemary. Until recently. Her story has been brought to life by the Irish National Opera in Least Like the Other – Searching for Rosemary Kennedy at the Royal Opera House. Director Netia Jones and soprano Amy Ní Fhearraigh join Jessica Creighton to discuss the production and its themes. The First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, told CNN news that it is the women in Ukraine who are bearing the brunt of the war, caring for their children and older relatives, and keeping things going. Someone who knows this only too well is Wendy Warrington, an NHS nurse and midwife who has been going out to give medical help and support to women and children in Ukraine since March last year. She joins Jessica to talk about the situations that she sees every day, and how women really are at the heart of it all. The Queen of Reinvention, Madonna, has announced her first ever greatest hits tour to mark 40 years since her breakout single, Holiday. She'll be playing 35 dates around the world. Performing hits from her 1983 self-titled debut album to 2019's Madame X. Jess dicusses her influence with Fiona Sturges, Arts writer for The Guardian and the Financial Times. Yesterday serial rapist David Carrick was formally dismissed by the Metropolitan Police. He pleaded guilty to 24 rapes and multiple sexual offences. Sir Mark Rowley, the Met Commissioner, has apologised to his victims for the force's failings. The force is currently investigating 1,000 sexual and domestic abuse claims involving about 800 of its officers. For survivors hearing about these cases in the news can be very difficult. Jess speaks to Nicola Brookes who was groomed by a police officer. The independent office of Police conduct said he “knowingly targeted and exploited” her. During the Covid 19 lockdown, the writer Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett decided - like many of us - to get a pet. She acquired Mackerel, a kitten, whose antics over one year helped her examine her desire and fears about becoming a mother and inspired her to write her latest book ‘The Year of the Cat'. Jessica Creighton asks Rhiannon about cat ladies and the extraordinary cat characters of her childhood, and the deeper themes of her book - anxiety and recovery from trauma, family love and why she used to say, “I'm not sure I want children.” Presented by Jessica Creighton Producer: Louise Corley Editor: Beverley Purcell
The Kennedy family is often referred to as "America's Royal Family", complete with their own stories of deaths, murders, infidelity, and cover-ups. But one tragic part of the Kennedy family history didn't come to light until nearly 50 years after the fact: the lobotomization of Rosemary, JFK's sister.
