Clairsy opened his Tragic Music Box and took us back to the year Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer got married, 1981. It was also a year where you could go and see The Frames and Dave Warner at the pub and The Police and Johnny Cash at the old Entertainment Centre. Oh...and wait until you hear how much a litre of petrol would have cost you back then. Shocking!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

These included all major state events inside Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle inward State Visits, the late Queen's major UK engagements and the operational media requirements for royal funerals, including that of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. It's no secret that Princess Diana continues to be a symbol of the British royal family for many people. She quickly changed the image of a princess from something haughty and unearthly to someone who is just like us. But even more so, she changed some of the ultimate rules of the monarchy! But which well-established rules did she boldly break? Let's find out! TIMESTAMPS: She chose her engagement ring by herself 1:21 She became the first woman in the royal family to deliver her babies outside the palace 2:11 She had her own opinions on how to raise her children 3:03 She was very open with “regular” people 4:51 She wasn't afraid to reveal her feelings 6:02 She experimented with her looks 7:10 How exactly did all of Princess Diana's actions change the monarchy? 8:10 Preview photo credit: HRH PRINCE CHARLES and LADY DIANA SPENCER - An informal study of Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, whose wedding will take place at St Pauls Cathedral, London, on 29th July 1981 - Date: 26.07.1981. Ref: B39_084926_0026: By Bandphoto/UPPA/Photoshot fot. Photoshot/REPORTER, https://www.eastnews.ru/pictures/pict... Animation is created by Bright Side. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY: - She chose her ring from a catalog! Of course, it didn't make it any less gorgeous, but, as Diana herself noted, it was still far from the most expensive ring out there. Now her jewelry has passed on to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, the wife of her son Prince William. - Princess Diana gave birth to both of her children in a hospital. Now royal mothers-to-be follow in Diana's footsteps, including the Duchess of Cambridge: she gave birth to all 3 of her children in the same hospital where Princess Diana delivered her sons. - She was against long separations, and that's why little William and Harry always traveled with their parents when they were performing their duties. - Pretty much everyone who remembers Princess Diana associates her name with kindness. Of course, she wasn't the only one who visited hospitals and did humanitarian work, but she was the only one who did it with extreme sincerity and openness. So it wasn't long before the public started to call her “The People's Princess.” - In 1995, she secretly gave an interview in which she confessed to having some difficulties in her relationship with her husband. Unfortunately, soon after this interview aired, the couple divorced. - Princess Diana was the icon of her time and one of the biggest fashion icons of all time too! She wasn't afraid to break the strict royal dress code and always managed to look elegant, trendy, and beautiful. - The Queen and her associates learned one important lesson: the existence of the monarchy in the UK depends on public opinion. As a result, the royal family has become way more open. Comparing is an exercise in futility and can actually be very harmful…and yet we all do it. Would we be so inclined to give in to this trap if we really understood God's perspective? Join host Julie Harwick as she explores this topic. *** Welcome to Women World Leaders podcast. I'm your host, Julie Harwick. Thank you for joining me today as we celebrate God's grace in our lives, in this ministry and around the world. In the summer of 1981 I, along with nearly every other female on the planet, was captivated at the prospect of a royal wedding. Charles and Diana fever was spreading with every print publication in the checkout line and every television or radio news broadcast. The elusive prince had finally selected his princess from all the fairest maidens in the land.  Lady Diana Spencer was part of the nobility, but she was a kindergarten teacher for heaven's sake; what could make her more relatable than that? As we watched her walking through the Scottish Highlands with her prince, showing the world her royal engagement ring and answering some of the hundreds of questions being shouted to her by the press, we imagined what it might be like to be her.  Nearly every little girl dreams of being a princess: wearing beautiful gowns and tiaras, dancing the night away at elegant balls, living in incredible luxury, being adored and admired by the people and especially by a charming prince!  Diana Spencer was about to have all  those dreams come true. When she walked down that long aisle of St. Paul's Cathedral with angelic flower girls monitoring her enormously long train, we couldn't help but envy her. Her face didn't show the excitement we felt, but we wrote it off to nerves and shyness. Years later, we discovered that her lack of enthusiasm on her wedding day was due to something much deeper than nerves or shyness. What had appeared to be a dream come true to her adoring public was becoming more and more of a nightmare to the young princess. We could see the distance that was growing between her and her prince, but we couldn't see the depression and sense of betrayal that led to bulimia and five separate suicide attempts. We had never considered what it might be like to have to put on a happy face and make unrelenting royal appearances while being hounded by paparazzi and reporters in the midst of an emotional crisis.  The life that had seemed so idyllic and desirable turned out to be anything but that. How many times have we looked at someone else's life with envy, thinking that, in comparison to the life we're living, they seem to have it all. Our human tendency to compare what we have with others goes way back. In fact, 20% of the 10 commandments God gave to Moses have to do with comparison and envy.  We are cautioned not to covet a neighbor's spouse or possessions. If we already have a spouse or possessions, what would make us want someone else's?  The only possible answer is that we've compared the two and theirs looks better. The ancient Israelites struggled with it and so do we…especially with the advent of social media. Author Srinivas Rao says, “ There's always someone who has more…more fans, followers, traffic, likes, etc.  Social media-fueled comparison is a game in which there is no endpoint. It causes us to lose sight of the fact that we are getting a deliberately,  highly- filtered, one-dimensional view of someone's life.”  A study published by security and research firm Kapersky Labs  surveyed  over 16,000 people and concluded that sites like Facebook, X and Instagram can often leave people feeling upset or “bitter” rather than happy and content.  Contentment is elusive - especially for those who spend a lot of time on social media. Google reports that in a study involving 1500 Facebook users, more than 60 percent felt inadequate or jealous after comparing themselves to others on Facebook. Social media can be a great way to maintain long distance relationships, share important milestones and events with people who want to know and to bring attention to causes or organizations that we want to support. But like anything else, it can easily be misused and wind up hurting us or the people who view our posts. The U.K.'s  “Nursing Times” reported that a mental health patient in an in-patient recovery group confessed, “I've just been admitted to this ward, and I feel awful.  But I go online, and my friends are getting married, one's had a baby, a couple are on holiday…They all look great, and they are all certainly having a better time than me.” It's pretty clear that social media is here to stay, so if it's a problem for us, we either have to avoid it or develop a new perspective.  Developing a new perspective doesn't come easily because comparison is so deeply rooted in created beings.  It goes all the way back to the first sin which was committed by a supernatural being.  In Isaiah 14 we are given the back story on Satan. He was known as the Morning Star, Son of the Dawn, the most beautiful creature in all of God's creation, designed to lead others in the worship of God.  But rather than recognizing the worthiness of God for such worship, he envied God's higher position and desired it for himself, saying, “I will make myself like the Most High.”  When God created humans, Satan took a similar approach to lead them into sin.  He convinced Eve that the reason that God had instructed them not to eat from the tree in the center of the garden was because He knew if they did, they would be like Him, knowing good from evil. That was the reason, but it wasn't because He wanted to hold onto His superiority over them, because He was God and nothing could change that.  But Satan appealed to Eve's desire to have everything God had. If we really think about it, we'd recognize that the root of all sin, pride, is at the heart of our need to compare ourselves to others and ideally come out on top. Just like Eve, we bristle at the thought of someone having something we don't have.  A NerdWallet survey revealed that 3 in 5 Americans, 57%, have felt envious of someone else's financial situation. We can't help but notice people who are able to dress better, drive nicer vehicles and live in better homes. When I lived in a neighborhood and took the dog for a walk, I found myself noticing my neighbors' beautiful landscaping and perfectly maintained homes.  It started me thinking of my own yard that was in desperate need of edging and trimming, the shrubs that were overgrown and the pollen and mildew stains on the windowsills. Their homes looked much better than mine and what had previously brought me great joy and gratitude became a problem and a source of discontent. When we first moved into the house, I recall having the thought, “I can't believe that this is our home!  As a child, I never would have imagined that I could own something like this.”  But when I started comparing what I had with what others had, the awe and thankfulness I had experienced then was replaced by a desire for something better. Our tendencies to compare aren't limited to material possessions either. As women, we notice the appearance of other women. Subconsciously we note if they have better figures, fewer wrinkles, nicer hairstyles.  When we look in a mirror we think of those women and see only our flaws staring back at us. Sometimes it's the gifts and talents of others that make us feel less than. We can't sing or speak or make friends as well as the people around us, so there must be something lacking in us.  We even compare our families, possibly having thoughts like, “ Look how her husband puts his arm around her and opens the car door for her! Sometimes I wonder if mine even realizes I'm here. And her children are so well behaved, and they excel at everything they do. My kids are constantly embarrassing me with their behavior and if there's something they're exceptional in, we haven't found it yet.”  If we're honest, we'd all have to admit to having at least some thoughts like these. Comparing ourselves to others nearly always leads to dissatisfaction and if, by chance, we come out ahead in our comparison, it leads to equally harmful pride.  It's a losing proposition either way, but we keep falling into it…at least I do. Jesus was quick to shut down any comparisons between His disciples. After He asked Peter three times if he loved Him and instructed him to “feed my sheep,” he gave Peter a vision of his future which included being bound and taken places he didn't want to go.  That future didn't sound very appealing to him and perhaps because misery loves company he wanted to know what would happen to John.  In John 21:22 Jesus basically told Peter, “you do you,” saying “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”  It was an important reminder that in order to follow Jesus, Peter needed to keep his eyes fixed on Jesus, not the people around him. The Apostle Paul also had quite a bit to say about comparing. In Galatians 6:4 he writes, “ Let everyone be sure that he is doing his very best, for then he will have the personal satisfaction of work well done and won't need to compare himself with someone else. 5 Each of us must bear some faults and burdens of his own. For none of us is perfect!” Apparently the church at Corinth had been doing a lot of comparing in the area of spiritual gifts which prompted Paul in 1 Corinthians 12 to devote an entire chapter to explaining how no one gift was more important than another.  He compared spiritual gifts to the parts of a human body, noting that all perform different, but very necessary functions. He points out, “ if the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact, God has placed the parts of the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.” “Just as He wanted them to be…” that's a phrase that should stick in our minds when we are tempted to compare ourselves with others.  Even as God gave us the spiritual gifts He desired us to have, has He not also given us our bodies, our minds, our families and everything we have, just as He desired? There is no doubt that God created us as unique and carefully planned individuals…just as He wanted us to be.  In Psalm 139 He reminds us that He knew us even before we were born and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. “How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God,” the psalmist says, adding, “How vast is the sum of them!”  His thoughts about us are precious and beyond imagination. He created each of us to be exactly who we are, like no one else. So comparing ourselves to others is not only pointless, but it reveals our lack of understanding that God, in His infinite wisdom, created us to be exactly who we are. And what He thinks of us, and remember, those thoughts are precious, matters far more than what we or anyone else thinks. If we truly intend to follow Jesus as He has commanded us to, we need to take our eyes off of the people around us that may seem to have something we lack, and fix them on the One Who has everything we need.  Thanks for listening to Women World Leaders podcast!  Join us each week as we explore together God's extravagant love and your courageous purpose.  Visit our website at www.womenworldleaders.com to submit a prayer request, register for an upcoming event, and support the ministry.  From His heart to yours, we are Women World Leaders .  All content is copyrighted by Women World Leaders and cannot be used without written consent.

Everyone is talking about it and SO. ARE. WE. As part of our new regular show-and-tell of our hyperfixations, this month Katie is teaching Garet allllll about the British Royal Family and asks the question that is currently dominating the internet: Where is Kate? Where's Kate Middleton a/k/a Her Royal Highness, Catherine, Princess of Wales. She hasn't been seen in public since Christmas Day, 2023, and since then, we have a royal motorcade heading to a hospital on December 28, 2023, an announcement of some sort of "planned abdominal surgery" that also required cancellation of every Kate appearance scheduled through Easter 2024 that occurred on January 14, and most recently - the photoshop fiasco heard 'round the world on March 10th, we're finally starting to genuinely doubt the safety and security of the Princess of Wales. The first woman to hold the title since the divorce of Lady Diana Spencer and then-Prince Charles (now King Charles) - is the title cursed? Is the engagement ring Kate wore that famously belonged to her dearly departed mother-in-law cursed? Well, it's not featured in that notorious Mothering Sunday photo, that's for damn sure. This week we head to London, and to 1981, as we explore the mysterious disappearance of 8-year-old Vishal Mehrotra. On 29 July in 1981, as the world waited in anticipation for the fairy-tale wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles, the Mehrotra family made their way into central London to join in with the celebrations. Dad Vishambar worked in a tall office building in the City and knew this would be a great vantage point from which to watch the royal procession. Daughter Mamta, son Vishal and nanny Joannita watched in awe as the crowds gathered below and the newly married couple passed by in their glass carriage.  What started as a day of celebration and excitement, ended in despair however, when Vishal disappeared on the way home.  Just what happened to this little boy?

This week I go on a Style journey with Philanthropist, Designer and mother of 5, the wonderful India Hicks. India is the daughter of the celebrated interior designer David Hicks and Lady Pamela Mountbatten, a lady in waiting to the late Queen.  She is a god daughter of the King, was a bridesmaid to Lady Diana Spencer and resides in Harbour Island, the Bahamas with her husband David Flint Wood and their 5 children…   We chat about being a Royal bridesmaid (obviously), what it meant to grow up in the creative world of David Hicks, being inspired by her grandmother Edwina Mountbatten (Countess of Mountbatten of Burma) and the process of choosing a dress for getting married for the first time in her 50s and so much more…     I first met India in the early 90s when the young aristocratic model walked in one of my early shows. Her peripatetic lifestyle is beautifully, and articulately, documented on her Instagram feed @indiahicksstyle.

Kathryn was born in the Himalayas. However, both her parents were English and had the same desire of "going out to India, spreading the Gospel message and serving the poor," explains my guest.Living in Vienna as a young girl, Kathryn remembers her parents taking in refugees who were seeking political asylum and it was normal to have refugees sleeping on their floor regularly. These memories had a profound effect on Kathryn and she was certain that this is how her interests in helping the less fortunate  came to be. Kathryn shares that her mother was not warm and fuzzy but she was from the generation of tough and strong women. Kathryn always felt very loved. Ruby was a teacher and taught her daughter and other children from the Embassy. Ruby was determined that Kathryn would not be spoiled. Kathryn was soon sent to boarding school because her parents were working and traveling regularly."A little pencil in God's hand" is how Mother Teresa would refer to herself. She never wanted credit  or accolades for her work. "She could be a tough cookie," Spink reflects however, "she was difficult to deal with sometimes, because God was so definitely on her side and that could make things tough. Mother Teresa was so determined, nothing could get in her way.""Poverty saddened Mother Teresa the most according to Kathryn,  "I don't think it angered her not in relation to God. Waste most likely angered her the most but never with God."Mother Teresa was always seeing the presence of God in the poor and it helped her persevere.  "Tolerance was deeply ingrained in Mother Theresa" explains Ms. Spink. "Mother Teresa believed that God was at work in every soul, so it wasn't up to her to try and convince others of the 'correct/best religion."My guest remarks "Mother Teresa used to say "come to Calcutta and I'll put you to work".  This is what this demure but mighty  woman believed with her whole body, mind and spirit.Kathryn even shared stories of the similarities between Mother Teresa, whose birth name was Agnes, and her mother Drana. "The family that prays together, stays together" was one of Drana's favorite expressions according to Spink. Caring for the sick was a common thread for the two woman. "It's not always about the physical suffering, but the whole process of being abandoned by people" was one of the toughest things for Mother Teresa to comes to terms with, comments Spink.Mother Teresa founded the order, "The Missionaries of Charities." She wanted to give shelter to  abandoned babies and to help the poorest of the poor. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize and after her death was canonized as Saint Teresa. I could have listened for hours to my guest share her stories of all of these selfless women.Mother Teresa was known as 'Mother' because when a nun/sister is appointed to a superior position within  the church, they are known as 'Mother.'INFORMATION:Kathryn Spink is the author of several books on the work of Mother Teresa and her coworkers, as well as other inspiring contemporary figures, including Brother Roger of Taize, Beede Griffiths, Dominique LaPierre, Prince Charles' and Lady Diana Spencer and more.  My guest is also the chronicler of the “South African Women's Human Rights Organization.” https://www.kathrynspink.com/https://www.harpercollins.com/blogs/authors/kathryn-spink-20167212026170

In 1981, the world watched as Prince Charles married the perfect royal bride: Lady Diana Spencer. Young, beautiful, and stylish, Diana breathed new life into the monarchy. But the fairytale didn't last long. In the years that followed, Diana and Charles's troubled marriage and bitter divorce was a constant in the tabloids, and Diana's death in a car accident in 1997 shook the world. And through it all, Charles gained a reputation as an unfaithful husband to the “people's princess” as he carried on an affair with friend Camilla Parker Bowles. But today, Camilla — once known as the notorious “other woman” — is poised to become Queen Consort when Charles takes the throne. It's a reflection of the changes the monarchy has undergone in the aftermath of the Charles and Diana saga… and the fulfillment of Prince Charles's decades-long quest to have the love of his life accepted by the royal establishment and the British public.

You'd be hard-pressed to find people who believe its lead actor, Will Smith, to be an actual virologist for the U.S. Army. And yet as recently as earlier this week, it behooved one of the “I Am Legend” screenwriters to clarify that the 2007 film is, in fact, a work of fiction: “Oh. My. God,” tweeted Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the adapted screenplay with Mark Protosevich. “It's a movie. I made that up. It's. Not. Diana, Princess of Wales (born Diana Frances Spencer; 1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997) was a member of the British royal family. She was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana's activism and glamour made her an international icon and earned her an enduring popularity as well as an unprecedented public scrutiny, exacerbated by her tumultuous private life. Diana was born into the British nobility and grew up close to the royal family on their Sandringham estate. The youngest daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer and Frances Shand Kydd, she was strongly affected by their divorce in 1967. She did not distinguish herself academically, but was talented in music, dance, and sports. In 1978, she moved to London, where she lived with flatmates and took on various low-paying jobs. Diana came to prominence in 1981 upon her engagement to Prince Charles, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, after a brief courtship. Their wedding took place at St Paul's Cathedral in 1981 and made her Princess of Wales, a role in which she was enthusiastically received by the public. The couple had two sons, the princes William and Harry, who were then second and third in the line of succession to the British throne. Diana's marriage to Charles, however, suffered due to their incompatibility and extramarital affairs. The couple separated in 1992, soon after the breakdown of their relationship became public knowledge. The details of their marital difficulties became increasingly publicised, and the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. As Princess of Wales, Diana undertook royal duties on behalf of the Queen and represented her at functions across the Commonwealth realms. She was celebrated in the media for her unconventional approach to charity work. Her patronages initially centered on children and youth but she later became known for her involvement with AIDS patients and campaign for the removal of landmines. She also raised awareness and advocated ways to help people affected with cancer and mental illness. As princess, Diana was initially noted for her shyness, but her charisma and friendliness endeared her to the public and helped her reputation survive the acrimonious collapse of her marriage. Considered to be very photogenic, she was a leader of fashion in the 1980s and 1990s. Media attention and public mourning were extensive after her death in a car crash in a Paris tunnel in 1997 and subsequent televised funeral. Her legacy has had a deep impact on the royal family and British society. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thehistoryexpress/support
