This week we went to our guest Sara's home state of Pennsylvania to explore the history and mystery of Pennhurst State School and Hospital. Although it's a, to some uncomfortable, Halloween attraction now, the campus used to house over 3,000 residents with disabilities of all kinds. They were not, however, treated well. Are the spirits people see in the facility now those of patients who never left? We really hope not, and pray that it's all just silly, catcalling ghost hunters making things up and throwing things at each other. Come listen as we scare ourselves and learn more about this Pennsylvania spooky spot! Come follow us on TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter! Visit our website! Send us a heart fart! It is the conclusion of our 3-part series on the history of Pennhurst State School and Hospital and this week Katie did a lot of spooky research that, honestly, scared the crap out of her. We also discuss the ethics of participating in ghost hunts and haunted houses in places like Pennhurst where the history of the location is truly traumatizing for the residents who were subjected to the torture and confinement. We also take a pretty crazy detour back into werewolf porn and Katie confesses perhaps the most embarrassing thing about herself. Make sure you're following us on IG, FB, and Threads @thebarisanklehigh and leave us a 5-star review anywhere you can find us but especially on Apple Podcasts because those written reviews really help other people discover us! Welcome to Part 2 of our 3 part series on the history of Pennhurst State School. Last week we covered the history through Mr. Bill Baldini's expose that showed just how extreme the abuse of children and handicapped people was at the Pennhurst institution. From deliberately degrading patients, causing intense physical pain to exert authority and control, to the legislature denying the medical need for female patients to have bras, the abuse was infected into every ounce of this place. This week, though, Katie tells us the history of all the lawsuits and the federal criminal indictments against Pennhurst workers that finally caused the closure of the school on December 9, 1987, one day before Katie made her grand entrance earthside and really started to wreck havoc. What was Pennhurst State School? Was it a school? A hospital? A mental health treatment facility? Turns out it wasn't really any of those things and instead is better identified as "Pennsylvania's Shame." The Pennhurst State School was borne out of a eugenicist idea that individuals with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities are "other" and should not be permitted to intermingle with "preferred" society. For 80 years, Pennhurst State School was a place where suffering was the norm and no one cared. In 1968, however, a local news reporter named Bill Baldini produced a multi-part expose on the "school" which lead to some immediate reforms but also - and critically - many lawsuits. In part 1 of our 3 part series on Pennhurst, Katie teaches us the history of the institution up to and including Mr. Baldini's report. Reminder! Pennhurst Asylum was never actually an asylum. It was previously Pennhurst State School and Hospital, one of the most notoriously harmful institutions for people with disabilities. Today, it's the site of a haunted Halloween attraction and paranormal tours, despite some strong opposition. What happened there, and how it closed, has shaped disability rights and advocacy today. Sabrina Boyd-Surka visits Pennhurst and talks to disability advocates and historians to get the real story behind these abandoned walls. In 1987, Pennhurst State School & Hospital closed its doors after a documentary and multiple court cases revealed the horrible conditions patients were in. HALLOWEEN SERIES! Welcome to the 3rd episode of this year's Halloween Series! Today we will discuss the atrocities that occurred within the walls of the Pennhurst State Hospital and how what happened there may be contributing to the so-called "hot spot" of paranormal instances occurring there. While the hospital opened in 1908, it wasn't shut down until 1987 when an expose of the facility was finally brought to light to the American people. The expose was disturbing, appalling and people were ANGRY! Learn why by listening to today's episode! In this episode of the True Hauntings Podcast we invite you to look behind the security doors of the Pennhurst State School and Hospital as we discover the many shades of blackness in its corridors and in the cold dark heart of man.Is this place still haunted? The question is why would any spirit wish to stay here unless they are truly lost and hopelessly traumatised because of the living conditions that they had to endure in life at the hands of doctors in this institution. This is a horror story of the treatment of those who were mentally ill and physically disabled in the early 1900's.It is the story of the souls that survived under terrible conditions and how a place of deep trauma has now been reinvented to give a voice to the voiceless. If you want to see what Anne and Renata are up to join them on their social media platforms at Anne and Renata.Follow Anne and Renata:Facebook: @AnneAndRenataInstagram: @AnneAndRenataYouTube: @AnneAndRenataTikTok: @AnneAndRenata#mentalasylum #trauma #humantragedy #pennhurstasylum #hospitalforthefeebleminded #ghosts #hauntedsite #hauntedasylums #hauntings #truehauntings #anneandrenata #torture #doctorfear #apparitions #hauntedsitesUSA #Pennhurst #followanneandrenata Visit www.anneandrenata.com for more spookiness. Another "state school" built with the purpose of "reform," turned very, very ugly. We know we've covered many of these places, if not all of the main ones, but Pennhurst's story had to be told. The Pennhurst State School and Hospital was an institution opened in Pennsylvania in 1908 to house children with epilepsy and intellectual disabilities with the goal of eliminating such genes from the population. The history of Pennhurst is full of controversy, with undisputed reports of unsafe living conditions, abuse, resident, and lack of adequate care or education. Despite the horrific conditions endured by the children and adults who resided at Pennhurst, legal action against the facility contributed to positive social changes, including the right to education for all children. TRIGGER WARNING This episode is talking about the evil and horrors that is the history of Pennhurst School and Hospital. We'll be talking about direct quotes from the staff about how they looked at and treated their patients with mental and physical disabilities throughout the history. We'll cover the evidence from both "Suffer the Little Children" news series from 1968 and the court case in 1977 to discuss only some of the cruelty that occurred here. It's not a fun episode, it has teeth things and and gross details about the way the hospital was operating and leaving their patients in. We felt it was important to cover all cases, especially for people who typically don't get the same space to tell their stories, but we acknowledge that this episode may not be for everyone. If you want to read more about the fact or more of the evidence brought forward against the hospital in the trial you can go through my works cited below.Instagram/Twitter: nope_im_scaredEmail: nopeimscaredpodcast@gmail.comhttps://lancasteronline.com/news/local/experimental-medical-treatments-and-psychological-trauma-a-look-back-at-pennhursts-history-of-horror-the/article_5a8637dc-d1ac-11ea-b6bd-e7c75fc73c29.html#:~:text=Residents%20became%20the%20objects%20of,closed%2C%20entrepreneurs%20purchased%20the%20property. https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/pennsylvania/pa-pennhurst/http://www.preservepennhurst.org/default.aspx?pg=93http://www.preservepennhurst.org/default.aspx?pg=36https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennhurst_State_School_and_Hospitalhttp://www.preservepennhurst.org/default.aspx?pg=35https://weirdnj.com/stories/pennhurst-asylum/

Located in Spring City, Pennsylvania, Pennhurst State School and Hospital has been called a mistake and has brought shame to the state. Many people with disabilities were sent there for specialized care, and many left with tragic memories and pain. The trauma inflicted inside of this place has resulted in many reported hauntings today. Currently, an annual Haunted House is operated inside of Pennhurst, but there is a lot of criticism surrounding how people with disabilities and mental illnesses are portrayed. Check out Pennhurst Memorial and Preservation Alliance at preservepennhurst.org for more information on how to join in on changing the ways that the world views people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This week the MIS Crew discusses haunted places, the tragedy that surrounds them and the supernatural effects they can have on the people who dare to enter them. We focus on two of the most infamous haunted locations, The Pennhurst State School and The Cecil Hotel. The Pennhurst was an institution for the mentally and physically disabled with a long history of over crowding, abuse and death that resulted in the eventual closing of the facility. Since then the Pennhurst has become a hot spot for the supernatural and a widely visited and researched paranormal sight. The Cecil Hotel is a hotel in downtown LA hotel with a dark history of drug abuse, suicide, violence and tragedy. We discuss one of the most infamous and mysterious cases at the Cecil, the case of Elisa Lam. Her tragic story is full of synchronicity and bizarre circumstances that have left many uncertain of what really happened. We dive deep into this mystery and discuss what happened, and who or what influenced this tragic story.
In 1968, Philadelphia journalist Bill Balldini brought light to the horrific conditions at Pennhurst State Hospital. This week we talk discuss the horrible details that involves two asylums. Pennhurst Asylum was kept a secret until a news reporter exposed it for the darkness that it really was. What was supposed to be a community of people working together, soon turned into torture, With kids being kept in cages and adults being chained to cribs, it's clear the intentions behind this asylum were pure evil. Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was supposed to be a place where the mentally ill would go to seek the best help, but this too, would quickly turn bad. What was supposed to house 250 patients soon housed more than 2,000. These buildings have so much evil behind them its no wonder they're haunted. So join us, on this journey into the unknown.Sources for Pennhurst:https://www.buzzfeed.com/unsolvednotes/notes-for-unsolved-pennhurst-asylumhttps://heavy.com/entertainment/2019/10/pennhurst-asylum/https://ghostadventures.fandom.com/wiki/Pennhurst_State_School_and_Hospital_(episode)picture used for promotion and information gathered from:https://the-line-up.com/pennhurst-asylumSources for Trans-Allegheny:https://allthatsinteresting.com/trans-allegheny-lunatic-asylumhttp://trans-alleghenylunaticasylum.com/main/hauntings.htmlpicture used for promotion:https://www.latimes.com/travel/la-tr-shutter21-2010feb21-story.html

State School and Hospital vs. Halderman, 465 U.S. 89 (1984)”. Pennhurst Asylum aka the Pennhurst State School is one of the scariest places in America and maybe the world. Hosts Clark Canez and Jen Curcio traveled 3,000 miles to get locked in overnight at the now-abandoned school. We learned so much about the day-to-day lives of the students and patients. Armed with a motion detector and flashlights, we went off to the tunnels under the Philadelphia building where doctors performed horrific experiments on patients. In the middle of the night, we had a scream when the motion detector went off for no visible reason. As always, you can listen to this episode here, Apple Podcast or Spotify.

Pennhurst State School and Hospital is sometimes referred to as Pennhurst Asylum. This is a location deemed to be one of the most haunted and with its history, there is no wonder. Decades of abuse and experimentation were perpetuated on children who for all intents and purposes were left abandoned to a system with no moral compass. An expose in the 1960s shined some light on the situation, but it would still take twenty years before the location was shut down. Today, it is open again as a haunted attraction and hosts tours. I'm joined on this episode by Tony Merkel of The Confessionals Podcast who lived near Pennhurst. We discuss his fascination with Bigfoot and the paranormal and the history and hauntings of Pennhurst Asylum! 5 Most Insane and Notorious Mental Asylums Ever Metal illness is now a fully accepted phenomenon. But back then, mental illness was considered the work of the devil and often those who suffered ended up suffering an even more horrendous fate than they could imagine. The next five places were supposed to be sanctuaries meant to treat those with mental problems. Instead, they became a place of torture and grief. These are the 5 most insane and notorious mental asylums ever. 5. London’s Bethlem Royal Hospital Founded in 1247, the Bethlem Royal Hospital started as a priory for the New Order of St. Mary of Bethlehem. At first, it was created to serve as an alms collection center for the Crusades and eventually it transitioned into becoming a hospital catering only for the mentally insane. The first "mad folk" patients were admitted around the 15th century. Since it was first founded, it has moved to four different locations but it's horrific reputation has only grown. The first building was a bungalow type structure with 12 "cells" for the patients, a kitchen, an exercise yard and a chapel at the center. 4. Aradale Mental Hospital Considered as one of Australia's largest abandoned asylums, Aradale Mental Hospital, formerly known as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum, was first built in 1864. It's official opening was in 1867. The hospital contained 63 buildings, with each building or ward made to accommodate certain cases including one for "morons," " lunatics," and those who were violent and unstable. The Aradale Hospital operated for 130 years and during that period it's estimated that more than 13,000 people died in the vicinity. It was awfully easy for anyone to be admitted to Aradale. All it took was one signature from anyone that was admitting the person. However, it would take eight signatures if any patient wanted to get out. 3. Athens Lunatic Asylum Known better as "The Ridges," the Athens Lunatic Asylum cranks up the creepy factor to 11. One look at the Gothic structure and you can tell its rich history most likely wasn't pleasant. The building was first built in 1868. Its iconic design follows "the Kirkbride Plan" which was a standard for asylums during the era. By 1874, it officially opened its doors and started taking in patients. Initially, it was a center designed to treat Civil War soldiers who suffered from PTSD. Of course, the disorder was unknown then and generally treated as "insanity." 2. Pennhurst State School and Asylum Once dubbed as the "Shame of Pennsylvania," Pennhurst State School and Asylum epitomized the horrendous state of most asylums in decades past. Originally, Pennhurst wasn't intended to be an asylum but instead as a hospital and state school. The government recognized that a hospital caring for the physically and mentally disabled needed to be built. They catered to patients who had psychological or physical "abnormalities" including those that are blind, deaf, mute or those with imperfect speech. The first time they are admitted, the officials would classify them into categories like "insane" or "imbecile." 1. The Federico Mora Hospital The Federico Mora Hospital in Guatemala is considered one of the most dangerous mental health institutions in the world. When you walk in, the patients often lie motionless on the floor or in their cells – appearing to be heavily sedated. Some are barely clothed while others are naked and covered in their own urine and feces. Patients inside long for human contact and interaction, something they rarely get from any of the staff that is already underpowered as it is. The staff says the patients are only sedated because it's the only way for them to cope. For every two or three nurses, there are over 60-70 patients. 5 Most Insane and Notorious Mental Asylums Ever

Zach McCormick and Adam Bonnett view the paranormal from very different perspectives, literally. Zach's interest in the paranormal began at an early age. As a child, he reveled in hearing stories that made him sleep with his bedroom light on. His interest in the paranormal took hold in his twenties when he began tracking down local urban legends, taking photographs along the way. A few decent pictures later and his photography career began as well. After a few years of legend tripping, he stumbled upon the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. He soon found himself working at TALA and immersed in the paranormal. Zach branched out, picking up gigs at Pennhurst State School and numerous residential investigations. He combined his passion for photography with his love of the paranormal.. A creative person by nature, Zach is also an accomplished musician.Adam Bonnett is a man unlike any other in the paranormal field. Despite being wheelchair bound, Adam has never let his condition hinder him. Adam started working at TALA four years ago, first in the Halloween haunted attraction and later on the ghost hunts. Now an assistant manager, he is as famous at TALA as its resident ghosts! Throughout the years he has experienced a bounty of paranormal phenomenon. Adam's nickname (and his alter-ego) is Glider. Glider, a wheelchair bound ghost, is a character he created and copyrighted to represent him and others who may be in a similar situation, bringing awareness and spreading the message that "if you set your mind to it; there are no limits."
