Hey nerds! Today we have our final author interview for a while, and are ending with a bang with fantasy author Ja-Mel Vinson. Ja-Mel is the author of DREAMER, a fantasy novel with sci-fi elements about the descendent of Joan of Arc who must combat demonic forces. It was incredible to walk through the trope-breaking elements of his novel, particularly of the sci-fi favourite of clones (why are they always "evil"?), how to write authentic diverse characters without having lived their experience and how diversity in fantasy focuses too heavily on discrimination and oppression. Really, we're asking, who is fantasy "escapist" for? Can we ever just have a nice non-racist, non-sexist, non-homophobic (etc..) systems in our fantasy stories? Follow us down this weird, wonderful rabbit hole of magical women, alternative histories, utopic possibilities, and more! Read DREAMER: https://www.amazon.ca/Dreamer-Ja-Mel-... Hey nerds! Today we have our fantastic interview with Tim Frankovich, fantasy author of THE HEART OF FIRE series. We sit down and discuss Tim's unique story, which follows a protagonist who can't communicate beyond a simple a yes or no and the challenges of writing plot around such a character. Then we trickled into other interests...including our favourite topic, Tolkien! Tim explains what he sees as the greatest mistake Peter Jackson made in adapting The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King -- and it might not be what you expect. Hello, beautiful nerds! Today we have for you our excellent fantasy author interview with the wonderful upcoming author, Katie Cherry! Katie is the author of the CRYSTAL DRAGON saga, a coming of age/fantasy adventure involving a planet full of mythical creatures and a strong heroine who is part-human, part-dragon. Katie joined us to discuss writing half-dragon heroines, building characters, and how she went from being a diehard fan of Eragon to writing her own book series. We also discuss how fantasy lends itself to discussing issues like mental health, considering the entire genre is built on underdogs overcoming insurmountable odds! In the era of COVID-19, these stories seem more pertinent than ever. Hope you enjoy this interview! What happens when you align more with the villain than the hero? We are joined by the genius science fiction/fantasy author James Maxey to discuss and celebrate his new release DRAGONSGATE: DEVILS, out today! A prolific writer and veteran Dungeon Master, James took us through how being a D&D Dungeon Master affects plot writing, character development and the ethics of your storytelling. We also discuss dragons and dinosaurs, dragon puppets, comic books, and the idea of a “false goal” to create better characters and plots…which will absolutely ruin every book or movie you watch from now on! James was super inspiring to talk to as he advocates that writers keep the “fundamental simplicity” of a writing career and Daydream, Type, Profit and Repeat (which coincidentally is the title to James' upcoming nonfiction writer's guide)!DRAGONSGATE: DEVILS is out today! An East Texan skeptic who writes fantasy inspired by figures in the Bible, who else but Mr. Ellis would have an amazing insights into humour, faith, and morality? This was such a wholesome and heartfelt episode where we discuss the concepts of defilement and glory, voice and storytelling, provocative book covers, biblical dragons, character arcs and the spiritual concepts of redemption and hope. As nonreligious but spiritual people ourselves, this conversation was gave us strength during these challenging times due to the COVID-19 pandemic and showed us even more how fantasy helps us through times of crisis. In this episode recorded over two years ago, Morgan and Shalini discuss arguably the most epic novel and film of all time, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In asking the question, “Why did Peter Jackson not include the Scouring of the Shire in the movie's many endings?” we guide you through key scenes, why Palantirs are metaphors for handheld technology, Gondor's architecture influences and why there's so many “creature” races in this final instalment of the trilogy. Happy New Year and welcome back to The High Fantasy Podcast! We are entering 2020 in a dignified manner with the first part of our Fantasy Ramblings series, where we just talk absolutely about anything associated with the fantasy genre. "I think we were all Cersei in this episode: in denial in our high towers like 'yeah this is all going to be fine lol!!!!' and then by the end we are just being suffocated by the show's rubble with Jaime, the actors who tried to warn us all along, shushing our ugly crying, telling us it's going to be okay." - Shalini Should Arya have died? Have the actors warned us all along about this season? Could a greater emphasis on Dany's vain saviour complex have made her "madness" not utter bullshit? ⚔️Welcome back to our Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 5 reaction and review! What did y'all think of the episode? People are super polarized about it, but for us as long time viewers and readers of the books, what they've done with a highly character-driven show by making it all about the plot is an absolute waste. Hellooo, folks! Today we are discussing Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and its continuing parallels with the World Wars. Yes yes, we know that Tolkien hated allegory and we respect our beloved author's viewpoint. But there is something...magnetic about looking at Saruman's abilities as a charismatic leader relating to the powers of certain real villains in the early- to mid-twentieth century. Particularly when we look at Peter Jackson's interpretation of the White Wizard. This is one of our "stale dated" conversations recorded in the fall of 2017. We were both sick AF at the time; we nerded out discussing the 2007 historical-graphic novel-film-adpatation "300" (and briefly its sequel, "Rise of an Empire" [2014]).
