Elsewhere in the galaxy, Mon Mothma struggles with her crumbling alliances & mental state as her daughter's wedding day (to the son of a powerful & dubious man) fast approaches... Season 2 assembles a powerhouse cast as Cassian Andor (Diego Luna, known for Rogue One and Narcos) deepens his role in the Rebel Alliance. Standing by his side is Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona, celebrated for Triple Frontier and Good Omens) and the ever‑determined Syril Karn (Kyle Soller, from Poldark and Doll & Em). Denise Gough returns as the uncompromising Dedra Meero (Seven Seconds, How to Get Away with Murder), while Genevieve O'Reilly reprises Mon Mothma (Rogue One, Obi‑Wan Kenobi) with her trademark resolve. Guiding the clandestine network is Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård, acclaimed for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Chernobyl), and the irrepressible droid K‑2SO is back under the voice of Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Rogue One). Ben Mendelsohn makes a dramatic return as Director Krennic (Rogue One, Bloodline), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes) is also rumored to return as Kino Loy. Rounding out the ensemble are Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay, known for Game of Thrones and Black Mirror), Brasso (Joplin Sibtain, of Troy: Fall of the City and Spooks), and the quietly powerful Wilmon (Muhannad Bhaier, from Mariah: The Diva, the Demons, the Drama) as the rebellion's unsung heroes. The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) reacting to the breaking news of USC hiring Eric Musselman away from Arkansas to becoming the Trojans' new men's basketball head coach followed by a break down of the Women of Troy's season coming to a conclusion in an Elite Eight loss to UConn following a thrilling Sweet 16 victory over Baylor. Shotgun and Connor break down the good and the bad of the Musselman hire and discuss what it means about the current state of the USC men's basketball program and the trajectory going forward. They also look at the roster Musselman will inherit and where he'll have to make some big additions before the Trojans head into the Big Ten next season. After a short break, the podcasting duo break down the final weekend of play for the Women of Troy, who defeated Baylor 74-70 in the Sweet 16 to advance to their first Elite Eight since 1994. There the Trojans fell to Connecticut 80-73 despite 29 points and 10 rebounds for JuJu Watkins, who was elite except for a fourth-quarter stretch when she couldn't make a shot and UConn couldn't miss that ended up determining the game. When Watkins went cold, there was no one there to pick her up as USC's role players, who had been so good all season fulfilling their roles, weren't able to do so in the biggest matchup of the season. The Triple-Double Podcast comes to a conclusion for the 2023-24 season with Connor and Shotgun discussing the Trojans potential going forward into the offseason. Joined by three fantastic first year students from UT Austin, we continue our discussion of Netflix's miniseries as we get into episodes 4-6. We discuss how this show has updated the tale for this generation of viewers and how it compares to the 2004's Troy. What characters work and don't work for us? Do we want a good or a bad Hector? Are the gods necessary or superfluous? Is what this show needs just more blood? Also witness the exact moment when Colin realizes Aeneas was Dean Thomas in HP. Answers to these and many more await, along with repeated plugs for Shadow & Bone. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week my guest is Mika Watkins, a screenwriter for television and film, whose career is already on a really exciting trajectory. She’s been part of the writers rooms for Black Mirror and the Amazon series Hanna and has written episodes for Sky’s Lucky Man and BBC1 period drama Troy: Fall of a City. She also created, showran and executive produced the 10-part sci-fi Origin for Leftbank and YouTube Premium. Mika is currently writing a range of her own projects including Love Story, a Tokyo-set rom-com for Eleven Films, Joketsu, a series about a 16th century female samurai for Sister Pictures and Amazon and Yakuza for FX, which is being produced by Fargo & Legion’s Noah Hawley. Mika is also currently writing on Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix horror anthology series, 10 After Midnight, and has just wrapped directing a short film that she also wrote for Film4. So there’s plenty to talk about! We go deep into Mika’s writing practice, how she generates ideas and at what stage she actually starts writing. We talk about her experience in writers rooms, as well as what it was like show-running Origin and why she recently turned her hand to directing, but why her heart we always be with writing. Mika’s incredibly intelligent and eloquent and that definitely came across in our chat, it was a real treat to have her on the podcast and to be able to interrogate how and why she writes.
We launch the first of a special, three part miniseries on the Netflix/BBC original on the Trojan War. Joining us is UT Classics professor and archaeologist Dr. Adam Rabinowitz who is currently teaching a class on the stories of the Trojan War. We talk about our initial reactions to episodes 1-3, as well as more broadly on the show's place in the modern TV landscape. Is this series actually about family more than love or war? Is there much more to Helen's character than we might detect on first viewing? Why is an extra hammering bronze? In this episode Dr. Rebecca Futo Kennedy talks about the Netflix mini series titled "Troy: Fall of a City." The show retells the mythical story of the 10 year siege of Troy, which occurred in the 12 or 13th century BC. However though a mere spin on historical fiction and mythology the show drew major controversy and backlash due to it casting black actors and actresses as major figures in the story line from Zeus to Achilles. In this talk Dr. Kennedy goes through the various viewpoints that criticized the show and accused BBC of "Blackwashing" and "Whitewashing" ancient history or more correctly ancient Myths..... From racists to Albanian nationalists we see a simple prejudiced become more complex as we explore the argument of what is and what was "Greek," the peculiar attempt to frame Achilles as not only a real person but as the foundation of particular cultures and etc. We also sympathize with many Greeks who feel that their myths and stories are being ripped away and whitewashed by British actors who represent an Empire of the past with a long history of taking the history of others and representing it in a way that better suits the colonizer. In this episode, we discuss Gladiator (2000), featuring orientalism, unfortunate Freudian weirdness, bad takes on imperialism, and... queer giraffes? Minor correction: at about 31:30, Julia says "Commodus" where she should say "Maximus". Mentioned: The costuming in Troy: Fall of a City, unfortunately. Support us by buying us a coffee! And follow us on Twitter!
The fourth and final episode in our series on Troy: Fall of a City, discussing episodes seven and eight. Thank god. We repeated a number of things we've been saying all the way along in our final notes in this last episode about Fall of a City, but we hopefully have managed to do so in a clear and synthesized way. Thanks for coming on this four-episode journey with us, and we'll be back in two weeks with, at last, some new material! Also, hit us up on Twitter @ClassicallyPod, where we'll be doing a wrap-up thread with some pictures of the absolutely garbage costuming from this show, so that you all can finally see what we've been complaining about. ONE MINOR CORRECTION: At around 55:55 Julia says "Odysseus arranges", which should have been "Achilles arranges". Sorry about that, folks!
In this episode, we discuss Troy: Fall of a City episodes 4, 5, and 6, and how they handled THE ENTIRE PLOT OF THE ILIAD. Yes, in only three episodes of television. Spoilers: it was pretty bad. Feat. translation theory, Julia's continued strong opinions about Achilles, and Allison's favourite piece of pottery!
This episode, Abi and Sarah bring you our interview for Season Two with the wonderful Hardeep Dhindsa (*trumpet fanfare*). In our fascinating chat with Hardeep, we cover issues like the discipline divides in the UK, whiteness and Classics, and why most Classicists are “afraid of post-modernism”. (Honestly, anything this side of the eruption of Vesuvius is all a bit much for us). And we do this, all within an episode that brings you art (just can’t help ourselves), Troy and Troy: Fall of a City, studying in Rome, The Carter’s Apeshit, and Hardeep just generally ticking all of our mythological boxes (we’re looking at you Polyphemus and Sarpedon). The title of this episode was lovingly ripped straight from Hardeep’s own MA thesis (with his kind permission) because we can’t resist a pun.
The second part of our four-part series on Troy: Fall of a City, covering episodes two and three of that show. It's still bad! But at least we don't have any corrections this week.
The first of a four part series on the Netflix original series Troy: Fall of a City, covering episode one of that show. Two small corrections to things we said in this episode: first, women did sometimes give birth lying down. Second, there is some evidence to suggest that the Greeks did know about India as early as the Classical period (roughly the 500s BCE), but Alexander was the first substantial contact between the Mediterranean and India.

Since 2005, David Farr has been pursuing his passion as a screenwriter. As a staff writer on shows like ‘MI-5’ and ‘Outcasts,’ the English writer’s work has entered more of a solo career with the 2011 film version of ‘Hanna,’ which starred Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, with Joe Wright in the director’s chair. Since the theatrical version, Farr penned the series ‘The Night Manager,’ a movie called ‘The Man With the Iron Heart,’ and he has additional credits for ‘McMafia’ and ‘Troy: Fall of a City.’ Now, he’s working on the reboot, televised version of ‘Hanna’ for Amazon. This time, the 8-episode first season stars Esme Creed-Miles, Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos. Essentially, the plot for the film and televised version “follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl raised in the forest, as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is…” In this interview, Farr discusses his love for existential spies, journeys of identity within character, best practices for longevity in television, and why it’s important to always understand the essence of story as a storyteller. The print version of this conversation is also available online at Creative Screenwriting. This time we're talking Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology, God of War (again), and Troy: Fall of a City, and wondering why it's gotta be so hard to keep track of these darn pantheons. And why are the gods so dumb? Also, Alex has the sleep schedule of a kindergartener and Ashley has identified the one time when double-dipping really is the best plan.
It's been a little while since Alex and Ashley found time to chat, so this episode is a little bit of a media round-up. We're talking Infinity War, Troy: Fall of a City, and of course the Met Gala. Also, Ashley had some housing troubles and Alex met some dinosaurs.

Everyone tends to have a strong opinion on Political Correctness so I thought why don't we try and have a chat about that and ask what people think. Can it be a problem in comics and other creative works? I was inspired by a video by Youtuber Metaron. He was talking about the decision to put a black actor in the role of Greek mythical figure Achilles in a BBC series about the fall of Troy and questioning the reasoning for it given that being a blonde haired incarnation of the sun-god Apollo is a huge part of the character. My main issue is that the actor is as bald as an egg! At least give him a blonde wig, I don't care how silly it looks. To be fair Achilles has rarely been portrayed well on the big screen, there was Brad Pitt's petulant version in Troy and an even balder Joe Montana in Helen of Troy! Do we spoil creative works by trying to be too inclusive or not being inclusive enough? This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Wanted dead or dead: Welcome to a much cooler version of the old west… we open on a widescreen panorama shot of a dry, dusty desert scene and a lone cowboy all in black, kicking his toe in the dirt. Welcome to the eighth WATCHING TROY FALL review of TROY: FALL OF A CITY. This is my review of Episode Eight “OFFERING”. I’d love to hear your opinions, of the series, and of my reviews. You can contact me from this website. Jeff
We wend our way through some Greek myths and legends, realising as we go that Chloe half-remembers all these things from childhood with less of the politics and also there are a lot of words and names we've read but never tried to stay out loud. We cover Circe by Madeline Miller, Troy, Fall of a City currently showing the BBC and, as Sarah puts it, "Eric Bana's Troy".
Welcome to the seventh WATCHING TROY FALL review of TROY: FALL OF A CITY. This is my review of Episode Seven “TWELVE DAYS”. A weekly recap of some pointers from Troy, Fall of a City. In the final epsiode I go over what happened during the sack of Troy, why the wooden horse makes sense and how not to exit a wooden horse if you ever find yourself in one. The oldest story from the West is unsurprisingly one of the most famous. Who hasn’t heard of the Trojan Wars, the Trojan horse and how Helen’s face launched a thousand ships? The BBC spent millions on the series Troy: Fall of a City, only to receive mixed reviews. NEON applauds its ambition and then looks at the myth versus the potential historical reality. There is an argument for historical accuracy, resignation that drama sometimes comes first and a debate about could it be that everything you know about that horse is wrong? And how long could a siege go on for?Written & Presented by Jem DuducuProduced by Dan MorelleMusic: Gary Numan - FilmsBe awesome, support us on PatreonSubscribe to the podcast on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. Wall to wall TV this week starting with a far ranging debate on whether remaking Seven Seconds in a foreign language would make it a better show and if we really forgive show runner Veena Sud for The Killing. Troy: Fall of a City sounds like a histocumentary so picture our glee when it opens with a romp in a hayfield, but is it rompy-good or chafey-bad. Last up is This Close, a show in english with full subtitles required; confusing? Let the Bicycrew explain in our first March episode!
