Grief is something we will all experience, but it's also something that can feel very lonely. Supported by Medibank, ‘We are Lonely' is a podcast that seeks to demystify loneliness and this bonus episode shares participant Charity's experience with grief and loneliness, and how creativity can help with healing and connection. This episode brings together singer songwriter, Alice Skye, Aunty Bea Ballangarry and Charity to talk about grief, and to work on a piece of music as a form of healing. There's no typical, or right, way to grieve. There is also no proper time frame for grief. It's important that you allow yourself to feel what you feel and not try to suppress it. Reaching out and connecting with people, sharing memories, listening to music, meditating, writing about how we feel and taking the time to care for ourselves are all ways through grief. If you are feeling overwhelmed, it's important to reach out for help. Thirteen Yarn is a national crisis support line for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
In our first show back for 2023 we talk about some popular Go Vegan campaigns such as Veganuary that encourage people to try adopting a vegan diet for 30 days and provide email support resources and cookbooks. We discuss whether these campaigns can frame veganism as a diet through the focus on food and miss the broader ethical considerations of animal liberation, or are they a critical first step for vegan curious people who are searching for information and the support that will help them make the transition. i’ve got this week and then one more week on the kcsb programming schedule and then i’ll go back to just doing the podcast. it was very gracious of kcsb.org to allow me and other alumni programmers to come back remotely when the pandemic started but it looks like most folks are going back to in-person at this point. plus, maybe it will encourage me to check out kdvs.org and kdrt.org - the two community stations in davis. i think one of the important things about these stations is that they have limited syndicated programs and focus on locally made content. sooo, goodbye santa barbara, for real this time. love ya forever!DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Sister Mantos “Anoche Me Enamore” Songs in the Key of Destroy Capitalism04:08 Mort Garson “Symphony for a Spider Plant” Mother Earth’s Plantasia06:45 Jes Kramer “The Same” Jes Kramer10:14 Alice Skye “Friends with Feelings” Friends with Feelings14:26 Rat Paws “Bad Arcade” Let’s Cool17:01 Powerplant “Snake Eyes” People In The Sun19:11 Lushloss “Gutter” Asking22:34 Dustin Wong “spring / summer” seasons33:42 Homebody “Slow Design” Human Ecstasy35:18 MANEKA “Salty (feat. This is sick-form, blak-yarn, crip-space, deep-place. Elena (Paredarerme Nation) explores disability justice and its meaning when grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing. A decolonial approach to disability, and the collective networks of rest, care and resistance that underpin it. Also featuring Tabitha Lean and music by E Fishpool and Alice Skye. Image credit: Renay Barker-MulhollandArtist statement: Flowers grow, the world revolves, and we make it through another day. While the sun sets, the diminishing rays ignite our own introspection on the status quo and our part in that. As we take stock of where we are, intertwined is a wealth of knowledge and strength. This is the destination, and now is the journey. This work was created in response to my first outing on Country with my new powered 4wd wheelchair, I was finally able to engage in something so integral to my culture. I came across a giant bush covered in spectacular flowers, and was awestruck by the beauty of it. I finally felt in that moment that I could see what true justice for everyone meant, while noting the solid and intricate branches that grew these magnificent specimens. We've had the world stop, and the looming of the unknown has forced us through space and time to reflect on the kind of world it is we're trying to save. Now is the time to be brave, the revolution is here. Just like that beautiful bush, we needed to make sure every branch supports a magnificent display of us.

Former politician, environmentalist and activist Peter Garrett first came to prominence as the lead singer of the Australian band Midnight Oil, welding socially conscious lyrics with atmospheric vistas of Australia seen from the back of a flatbed truck. After a hiatus of nearly two decades Midnight Oil are back with a new 'mini album' called The Makarrata Project. The album features a cross section of First Nations' musicians including Jessica Mauboy, Alice Skye and Tasman Keith, with the band donating its proceeds to organisations committed to The Uluru Statement from The Heart (2017). This called for greater reconciliation with Australia's Indigenous population, including the establishment of a 'First Nations Voice' enshrined in the Australian Constitution, and the creation of a 'Makarrata Commission' to supervise agreements and communications between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Courtney Barnett is a national treasure. Ever since I started hearing her songs, around 2013, she's been one of my favourite storytellers. A dry wit, with a knack for writing very catchy indie rock songs and reflecting back on the world around her; big and small. That talent has taken her around the world, and for a good part of the last five years, Courtney has been on the road; consistently touring around Australia, the US, and Europe. When coronavirus hit, that all stopped. And CB found herself back in her adopted hometown for the longest spell in quite a while. When I ask her to Take 5, Melbourne is in the midst of a coronavirus spike, the city is back in lockdown and feeling somewhat cut off and left behind from the rest of Australia. That's one of the reasons I asked Courtney to Take 5 with HER Melbourne… the city, the songs, and the stories that have filled her heart since she first moved here. Taylor's new book in her Alice Skye series, DRUIDS STORM is out TODAY and is filled with all the butt-kicking badassery and gritty magical characters you want in an urban fantasy. We had a fun time talking about Taylor's love of mixing European mythology into her modern fantasy stories, swearing and profanity in fantasy lit in general, and why people are so fascinated by the idea of wielding magic (since Taylor's British, we subtly wanted to ask if she got her Hogwarts letter, but alas, she didn't either).
