This week's episode of then & now is part of a series co-sponsored by the L.A. History Collaborative, in which we explore the impact of the catastrophic wildfires that affected Los Angeles in early 2025. We are joined by Amy Green, Principal of Silverlake Conservation and one of Los Angeles' most seasoned historical conservators. She discusses her efforts to preserve intricately crafted tiles from the early 20th century that have been salvaged from homes in Altadena impacted by the fires as well as the importance of these tiles to the historical context of Altadena and Southern California more broadly. In the aftermath of the extensive destruction caused by the Eaton Fire, historic Batchelder tiles—recognized as one of Los Angeles' most significant contributions to the American Arts and Crafts movement—have been discovered, sometimes as the only markers of where homes once stood. To preserve these pieces of history, Amy, along with the volunteer organization Save the Tiles, endeavors to protect this essential aspect of cultural heritage. Salvaging these architectural fragments not only preserves elements of the affected homes but also serves as a connection between what has been lost and the future that lies ahead. Amy calls attention to the fact that, in the midst of profound devastation, there emerges a remarkable display of kindness. Amy Green is a Principal of Silverlake Conservation and has a broad range of experience in the conservation of a variety of materials, including ceramics, glass, metal, stone, concrete, and modern materials. Amy came to the field of conservation as a ceramic artist with a strong working knowledge of clay and glaze chemistry, and she has gravitated towards the treatment of historic tile and architectural terra cotta. Amy has a certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Southern California, a Master's of Art in Tile Conservation from Antioch University, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan.Further ReadingLos Angeles Times, ‘The only thing still left.' “During the pandemic, a lot of companies underwent digital transformations…At the same time that that was happening, sustainability was really catching wind, particularly in places like Europe.… (I)f you are a non-manufacturing company, your largest source of operational emissions is probably your IT. So…CIOs now have these mandates trickling down from their CEO or whomever that they need to reduce their energy consumption and their emissions. And they're saying, how do I do that while also meeting these business imperatives?” Monica Batchelder on Electric Ladies Podcast Information technologies have a huge carbon footprint, about 1.5% of total global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which equals about all of what the UK emits. It's about all the electricity those units use, including in their manufacturing process. But, they also reduce the impact of other systems and are critical to our lifestyles, economy and business goals. How we reduce the impact of IT? Listen to Monica Batchelder, Chief Sustainability Officer of HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprises) in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson to find out. You'll hear: How the pandemic accelerated IT carbon management programs. What “radical collaboration” is and how HPE is using it to help startups access technologies The challenges CIOs are facing today to both reduce IT's carbon footprint while it's also the backbone of the system for reducing the impact of the rest of the organization. Addressing the conflict minerals challenge, global standards and frameworks, and much more Plus, insightful career advice …. “Leadership isn't a title. It's not about having decision making power. It's not about being around the table in the boardroom. If you have the right idea, it is a pragmatic idea, you have built trust in that your peers know that if you bring them an idea, it is going to be thought through and it is going to be sound, and it might be transformative, (then) you will get the buy-in, you need to make change happen… It's about building trust with stakeholders from the start to get your ideas across. And that's how you can create the change you want.” Monica Batchelder on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: Michele Mueller, Michele Mueller, Manager of Connected, Automated and Electrification at the Michigan Department of Transportation Vanessa Chan, Ph.D, Chief Commercialization Officer of the Department of Energy on transforming our energy systems (and the Inflation Reduction Act funding) Joan Michelson on “Doing Sustainability” with Gary Baker, on the balancing act between carbon impact and business and social goals Katie McGInty, Chief Sustainability Officer of Johnson Controls, on how to reduce the carbon impact of buildings Heather Boushey, Member of the National Council of Economic Advisors in the White House and Chief Economist of the Invest in America Cabinet Subscribe to our newsletter to receive our podcasts, blog, events and special coaching offers.. Ann Batchelder is the author of Craving Spring: A mother's quest, a daughter's depression, and the Greek myth that brought them together. She served as Editor of Fiberarts Magazine and was a guest curator for the Asheville Art Museum. Ann has kept a mindfulness practice since 2004, is the mother of two adult children, and lives with her husband in Asheville, N.C. This is Ann's first appearance on The Only One In The Room. Ann talks to Laura about how her journaling led to her memoir, and discovering how deep her daughter's depression really was. This leads her to talk about the eating disorder that her daughter developed, which led to a drug addiction as well. It wasn't until her daughter invited her to therapy that she realized her daughter was addicted to heroin. After going to Al-Anon, discovering the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone, and her daughter getting arrested, Ann finally got the courage to begin her healing process, which led to her daughter's healing as well. This included really learning how to sit with her feelings and to not submit to kneejerk reactions. Before they wrap, Ann shares how her daughter is doing today, and talks a little more about the Greek myth that helped her heal her relationship with her daughter. When Ann's world was turned upside down by her daughter's addiction and mental health struggles, she was thrown into a journey that no guidebook on parenting could prepare her for. Her heart-rending tale of seeking therapy and rehabilitation for her daughter and confronting the heavy cloak of self-blame unfolds in this episode with raw honesty. Ann Batchelder served as Editor of FIBERARTS Magazine, was guest curator for the Asheville Art Museum, worked as an account executive at a Manhattan advertising agency, and was Director of Special Events for the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Ann earned an MSW in psychotherapy. Her book Craving Spring -a mother's quest, a daughter's depression, and the Greek myth that brought them togetherTaking a page from the timeless Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone, we weave through the intricate dance of holding on and letting go that every parent must learn. Ann's experience opens a window into storytelling's transformative power in healing and self-discovery, challenging the conventional wisdom of 'how-to' parenting in favour of a journey to self-trust. The conversation also serves as a salient reminder that breaking through the silence on mental health can foster a community rich in compassion and support, one story at a time.As we wrap up the conversation, Anne's insights into navigating the intricacies of mother-daughter communication shine a light on the potential of listening and responding with intention. The wisdom she imparts on guiding children into adulthood, coupled with her journey chronicled in "Craving Spring," offers a touchstone for those grappling with similar tribulations. This episode isn't just a sharing of experiences; it's an invitation to embrace the collective strength of vulnerability and remember that you are not alone in the face of adversity.Ann is the mother of two adult children and lives with her husband in Asheville, NC. Hopestream for parenting kids through drug use and addiction
When Ann Batchelder discovered her daughter's suicidal thoughts, bulimia and substance misuse, she desperately sought wisdom in the places many of us do: therapy, 12-step programs, and Buddhist teachings. But the ancient Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone gave her the greatest solace and understanding of parenting a wayward child. As Ann “did the work” to preserve mindfulness and realism about what she could control, she also began writing about her family's experiences. Now, a decade after it began, her book is complete. Craving Spring: A Mother's Quest, a Daughter's Depression, and the Greek Myth that Brought Them Together is not just a memoir but a universal call for the renewal of families strained by the burden of substance use, mental health, and eating disorders. In this episode, we discuss:the power of Demeter and Persephone's story for mothers (and all parents) of children struggling with substanceswhy it's so difficult for parents to accept that they are going through trauma as wellfinding the focus and willingness to care for our own well-being in chaotic timesthe burden Ann was unknowingly placing on her daughter and how she changed herselfhow the immense growth and change (of both Ann and her daughter) during recovery has led to a richer, more fulfilling relationshipThe podcast is now part of a nonprofit called Hopestream Community: www.hopestreamcommunity.orgLearn about The Stream, our private online community for moms, at www.hopestreamcommunity.org/the-stream/Find us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload my free e-book, HINDSIGHT: Three Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Misusing Drugs: www.brendazane.com/hindsightJoin my email list: www.brendazane.com/email
Abigail Batchelder, PhD, MPH is an Assistant Director of Behavioral Medicine Program for Stigma and Substance Use Research and Assistant Professor in Psychology, Harvard Medical School, as well as the Director of the Substance Use Scientific Working Group, at Harvard University's Center for AIDS Research. What grabbed my attention of the research article, The shame spiral of addiction: Negative self-conscious emotion and substance use, was the succinct conclusion of, "Shame and guilt are barriers to reducing stimulant use, and expanded efforts are needed to mitigate the deleterious effects of these self-conscious emotions in recovery from a stimulant use disorder." This is what so many of us learn in the Recovery process and, as relayed in the podcast, is cited so many times in our 12 Step mantras: reduce the shame to increase your progress towards healing. I listen to Abby and have hope that the system we've built to react to substance use disorders can instead shift towards addressing the root cause of so many addiction challenges we face in our world today: mental health. We've all heard the term “data literacy” by now. Although there is general consensus regarding the importance of knowing how to read, write, and communicate with data, some folks may take issue with the term itself. Wendy Batchelder, CDO at Salesforce, wants to reframe the conversation and focus on how people can leverage data to do their jobs better.Wendy is a technology executive who has spent her career tackling business problems with technical solutions and transforming diverse team members into leaders. In her current role at Salesforce, Wendy is helping the right people access the right data at the right time — with the right controls. In this episode, Satyen and Wendy discuss the problems with data literacy training, the power of answering “so what?” questions, and the value of advocating for DEI in tech.--------“You have to drop the jargon and get down to what are you trying to explain? If you're trying to help people to use more data for decision making, then just introduce the data. Don't sit down and say, ‘We're gonna talk about data literacy,' because everyone's eyes gloss over and you lose their interest and their attention. It just doesn't give you a lot of respect. Part of our job as data experts is to help people to use data better and that's the conversation that should be had. But, the second you say things like data literacy, the tone of the conversation totally shifts.” – Wendy Batchelder--------Time Stamps:*(06:41): Data strategy at Salesforce*(26:37): Keeping up with connectivity*(28:40): Data literacy denial*(35:22): DE&I in data*(47:18): Satyen's Takeaways--------SponsorThis podcast is presented by Alation.Learn more:* Subscribe to the newsletter: https://www.alation.com/podcast/* Alation's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/company/alation/* Satyen's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ssangani/--------LinksFollow Wendy on LinkedInRead Wendy's book Data Governance Handbook

So many of us feel drawn to writing a memoir as a way to process through a difficult event. Writing is one of the most powerful ways to examine and reshape our internal narratives, and it can be a path to healing, as well as an act of service to others. Today's guest wrote her memoir for just those very reasons. Ann Batchelder is an ordinary mom with a career in arts administration and communications. When her teenage daughter became depressed, Ann's world seemed to fall apart. As she desperately tried to understand her child's bulimia and later drug addiction, Ann turned to writing to cope with her emotions. Her debut memoir, Craving Spring, is about her journey as a traumatized mother and how the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone helped her to rebuild her relationship with her daughter—and with herself. Ann is a passionate advocate for recognizing women's wisdom and reducing the stigma around depression and addiction. In this episode, you'll learn:How Ann found peace, acceptance, and trust in her child's difficult journey. How to navigate privacy issues when you're writing a story that involves—or even centers—another person. What the publishing process is like for a debut author without a platform. How Ann stayed sane while doing all of the marketing and promotion for her book—and how much she budgeted for it.The powerful ways narrative can help us make sense of our lives and the incredible value of writing your story—even if you don't plan to publish it.For more, check out:annbatchelder.commaggielangrick.comwonderwell.pressAnd follow:instagram.com/annbatchelderinstagram.com/maggielangrickinstagram.com/wonderwellpressinstagram.com/selfishgiftpodcastJoin Wonderwell's "Influencer to Author" virtual publishing workshop featuring Laura on June 15-16 and finally get your book out into the world! Rhia Batchelder is an ICF-certified life coach, mentor, writer, and corporate speaker specializing in helping professionals thrive in their careers by increasing confidence, conquering limiting beliefs, preventing burnout, and prioritizing fulfillment. Prior to starting her own coaching business, Rhia practiced law at the highest levels in New York City and then in Denver, CO, where she now resides. Although she amassed all the impressive credentials she needed to be successful, she had not prioritized taking care of herself, addressing the beliefs that were holding her back, or finding work environments that met her needs. She shifted gears and began to focus on self-care and building self-worth. These realizations and the growth they sparked inspired her to start Rebuild with Rhia to support other professionals in balancing their ambition with the desire to live happy, fulfilling lives. Both employers and employees can learn to create healthy work environments that boost employee retention, innovation, growth, and productivity. In this episode, we discuss: - Starting out as a big firm lawyer in a big city and deciding to “be around more trees”. - It is not wrong to want to align your work with your values and look for freedom and autonomy in your career. - Finding ways to get rid of the things you hate to do in your life. - Addressing burnout without losing yourself in the process.
