This is pure bonus content- A weird little side story that happens during Sarah and Abraham's time. It doesn't have much spiritual value, and really not a whole lot to redeem it. It's just kind of interesting. Content warning: discussion of rape and consent.
Oh Hagar. Her story made me SO MAD at first, but then I calmed down and realized that it is one of the most inspiring, faith affirming stories I've read so far. God is with us ALWAYS. He HEARS and He SEES us where we are. Ultimately, Hagar's story is the same of all of ours: a constant reaching towards a God who sees and hears, no matter where we are. The song featured in this episode is Rescue by Lauren Daigle. This episode pairs with the Come Follow Me lesson for February 7-13 AND February 14-20. About the portrait: As I studied the story of Hagar, I was bothered by the idea that she may not have given her consent when she conceived Ishmael. Yes, I know it was a "cultural thing" but just because it's culturally accepted doesn't make it right or mean that she wasn't hurt. So I wanted to give her the chance to voice her opinion, to say "NO". As a result, her hands are held up in a "stop" gesture. But as I studied her story and saw the way that God worked with her, I saw a different image. I saw her reaching towards the stars reflected in the well- reaching towards all God has promised her. I think it works both ways! This episode is dedicated to our dear sweet dog, Captain Kirk, who passed away this week. This episode is all about Sarah (also known as Sarai). Who was she? What was she like? What kind of life did she lead? How was she a perfect help meet for Abraham? We discuss all this and more in this month's episode. This episode pairs with the Come Follow Me lesson for February 7-13 AND February 14-20. About the portrait: I had a hard time coming up with Sarah's hands for this portrait. I knew I wanted to portray her in the mountains by the Dead Sea. Mountains because she metaphorically climbed mountain after mountain in her life. I liked the idea of the Dead Sea at night because the night sky (representing the power of God to give life) would be reflected in something that was dead (the Dead Sea). So I had my background, but how would I create Sarah in this space? I asked my husband what he thought I should do. He said he thought I should paint God placing a baby into Sarah's arms. While that didn't make the final cut, it did give me an idea. I thought about the idea of God telling Abraham to look into the sky and count the stars because that's how many descendants he would have. He made that promise not only to Abraham, but also to Sarah because it would be through her that Abraham's heir would be born. So I chose to place her aging hands, cupped towards the night sky, with stars falling from heaven into them. A little whimsical perhaps, but it made me happy. Awww, this is our last scripture reading assignment together!
This week we talk about how to judge righteously, the light of Christ and I interview a very brave lady: my friend Brianne! She tells us some things she's pondered as she read Moroni 8 and about the miracles she's witnessed in her son's life. For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
This week Moroni teaches us about various priesthood ordinances. I talk about Gratitude, and how I've been thinking about the Greatness and Goodness of God (specifically the talk, "The Greatness and Goodness of God by Dale G. Renlund from the April 2020 General Conference) and how that popped up in the reading assignment this week. Also, I announce the upcoming retirement (or hiatus???) of The Savior Said. For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
This week we get to talk about one of my FAVORITE stories of the Book of Mormon- Moroni's "weakness in writing". I love what it teaches us about approaching the Lord with humility in our weakness and how He can make weak things become strong. I talk about the importance of faith and hope, and what I learned about hope and my family this week. For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
Do you hear that? It's the sound of waves crashing, wind blowing....and mixtapes playing! That's right, it's a mixtape episode! Since we're traveling with the Jaredites to the promised land, I thought it was appropriate that we listen to some inspirational tunes about water. Songs featured in this mixtape: Into The Sea (It's Gonna Be Ok) by Tasha Layton Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) Lyric Video by Hillsong UNITED Wade in the Water by The Petersens Master the Tempest Is Raging by Ruben Alves Walking on Water by NEEDTOBREATHE For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
We've made it to the book of Ether! Why do we not call the Brother of Jared by his actual name? How does the Lord show compassion towards us (like He did to the Brother of Jared)? How did the Brother of Jared make the stones? Why did the Lord say "never before have I shown myself"? All this and more on this week's episode. For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
This week I really wondered about Mormon and Moroni's mental health. I mean, I've been wondering about it for awhile, but this week I really started looking at the way trauma impacted Moroni's writing style. We talk about why Moroni is one of my favorite scriptural writers, why bad things happen to good people, and why gold plates aren't a weird writing material in the ancient world. This episode is kind of research paper-y so if you want to see the quotes etc for yourself, you can find them in my blog at http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/2020/10/s2-e42-nov-2-8-i-speak-unto-you-as-if.html For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
As I've read the assigned reading this week, I keep thinking "Poor Mormon!" What did he see? What did his son see? The wickedness of the people he lived among had to be mindboggling. Yet through it all he loved them and loved the Lord. In this episode I try to find ways we can do that in our own lives. For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
It's Bonus Content time! The Parowan, Utah Stake was so kind to invite me to take part in their Family History Discovery Day. And because it was virtual, I could attend even though I'm in Alabama! This presentation is meant to be viewed in video format, and you can find that at: https://youtu.be/0N7LNwaTHIc If you just want to hear the audio, listen on :) For the Google Slides presentation I reference, you can find that at: https://tinyurl.com/yyedy6mf Note: This presentation was specifically made in a generic fashion. so if your stake wants to use it at their Family History Discovery Day, they are welcome to do so! All I ask is an email to TheSaviorSaid@gmail.com to let me know it's being used :)
What's in a name? Apparently a lot! Then we explore the church culture X-files around the three disciples! And can you believe the people of Christ were happy for a record breaking ~200 years? What happened to break that streak? All that and more in this week's episode. Why did Jesus give the crowd the sacrament for a second time? Why did He mix Isaiah and Micah? How can we feel like we belong? Find information about the chiasmus I talk about at https://knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/why-did-jesus-mix-together-micah-and-isaiah *Please note: I made a major "oopsy!" Jesus Christ had a limited amount of time to spend with the Nephites. What were His priorities? What does that teach us about what our priorities should be? How did He teach them to minister? And what did they learn about prayer? We talk about all this and more! This week it's a faceoff between Matthew 5 and 3 Nephi 12! Well, not really. But we can learn some things by examining the differences between the various sermons and the versions of the Lord's Prayer. Also, we learn that perfection is pending! Find the KnowWhy from Book Of Mormon Central about the Sermon at the Temple here: https://knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/why-did-jesus-deliver-a-version-of-the-sermon-on-the-mount-at-the-temple-in-bountiful Copy of my Perfection Pending talk: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PPIMnOSC3-OIb9FTYxaWTvrzglTYtBus/view?usp=sharing For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
Fires, tornadoes, and floods...OH MY! This week the Nephites experience the calamities that occurred on the Earth after Christ was crucified. After going through some of my own struggles, I realized that the destruction could be a good metaphor for some of the stuff we face in this life. And that made me think of ART! Specifically one of my favorite sculptors, Auguste Rodin and one of my favorite painters, Robyn from Art By Geek Girl! Rodin was unavailable (he died in 1917), but Robyn was willing to be an interviewee for this week's episode. We talk about the contrast between light and dark in art and in life and how Christ truly is the Light of the World. You can find Robyn's artwork at https://www.artbygeekgirl.com/ , https://www.facebook.com/Artbygeekgirl/, or https://www.instagram.com/geekgirlph/ Also the painting she talks about in this episode (I Know That My Redeemer Lives) is the cover art for this episode! This is a super mini episode. This week was nuts, the kids returned (virtually) to school, and then...I got a migraine. So please give me a little grace this week, this episode is basically a short little testimony about the Savior. Also migraines apparently take my ability to use punctuation, so this episode is a 5 minute run-on sentence. Sorry about that. Again, grace. Lots and lots of grace please! It's Christmas time! In August! Well, I guess it's not *really* Christmas time, that won't happen for another 5 years. At least that's what Samuel the Lamanite tells us. We talk about that, how I LOVE the way that Samuel teaches about repentance, and why having a specifically 5 year (and a 400 year) prophecy is interesting. Book of Mormon Central articles: Why Did Samuel Say the Wealth of Some Nephites Would Become “Slippery”? https://knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/why-did-samuel-say-the-wealth-of-some-nephites-would-become-slippery Why Did Samuel Make Such Chronologically Precise Prophecies? https://knowhy.bookofmormoncentral.org/knowhy/why-did-samuel-make-such-chronologically-precise-prophecies For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
What kind of Prophet was Nephi? How does understanding Nephi's teachings as a Prophet help us appreciate our current Prophet, President Nelson? And is ponderizing even a word??? (My spell check says no.) But that doesn't mean ponderizing can't have a HUGE impact on our lives! We talk about all of this and more in this week's episode. If you would like to see my chart of Nephi & President Nelson's teachings, you can find it at https://tinyurl.com/NephiPresNelson For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
I got quote-y in this episode! I loved the scripture assignment from this week because I saw how much Helaman's society is reflected in our own modern day society. I thought it would be interesting to pair some modern day scripture (quotes from General Authorities) with some of the ancient scripture from this week's reading. Enjoy! You can find all of the quotes I use at thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
WHO'S READY FOR A MIXTAPE??? It's been months since our last mixtape, and I thought a mixtape might be a great way to get your amped up for the Army of Helaman! This week we dive into the "War Chapters" of the Book of Mormon. I wanted to do a scholarly reading and go into the different characters, the battles, the tactics, the strategies...but life had other plans. This has been a difficult week anxiety-wise as I start to look at going back to school in the middle of a pandemic hotspot. It has made focusing and really "studying" my scriptures difficult. However I found that "feasting on the words of Christ" sometimes means not studying the culture, the word usage, and all the other scholarly information on the text we're reading, but instead it means taking the scriptures that mean something to you and etching them on your heart. Clinging to them in the middle of the war you're fighting. Using them as your umbrella in the storm. So that's what I did this week. I learned several lessons from Captain Moroni, but I distilled the concepts I'm focusing on into 3 P's. I will be: Prayerful, Peaceful, and Prepared just like Captain Moroni. This week I had a TON of stuff going on in my life and I didn't have time to record an episode... YIKES! However, because Alma is talking to his son Corianton about sexual purity, I thought it might be a good time to revisit the law of chastity like we did last year when we were in 1 Corinthians. I went back and listened to the episode from Season 1 and honestly, I think it's better than anything I could put together now! So this is a re-release of episode 33 from Season 1. LISTENER ADVISORY: This episode is geared towards adults trying to help youth stay sexually pure. As a result, some content may not be appropriate to listen to in a family setting. Description of Episode from Season 1: Because Paul talks about sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians, I decided it was time to talk a little bit about chastity. I'm talking from my experience of working with thousands of teens in my profession, as a mother of a teenage boy, and just as someone who cares about kids. I talk about the stuff I think we need to be addressing with our kids besides "don't have sex until you're married". Things like consent, sex and technology, using respectful language, and sexual harassment. These are my own personal opinions and not meant to be any sort of official anything. Just some thoughts I had that I thought others might find helpful. This week's assignment felt like a warm honey gold summer afternoon! I loved it and I hope you love it too. We discuss conversion, chiasmus (pronounced Key Az Mus), and how Shiblon suffered from middle child syndrome. Also, I ask YOU the question: As you read Alma 37:6–7, ponder and record ways you've seen this principle at work in your life. What are some small and simple things the Lord uses to bless you and accomplish His work? If you want to send your answer in either as a recording (check your phone for a voice recorder app) or written format, just email it to thesaviorsaid@gmail.com or comment/message my Facebook or Instagram page. Your answers may be used in an upcoming episode of The Savior Said! LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE! Or maybe it's "Let's get ready to be HUMBLE!"
This is the week of Korihor! We talk about some of the faults in his philosophy, how the armor of God helped Alma as he questioned him, and you get to hear MY FAVORITE scripture of the entire Book of Mormon! What weapons of rebellion are you willing to bury to come closer to your Heavenly Father? What can the story of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis teach us? And was Ammon really boasting? Speed warning! I was so excited about the stories this week (Ammon! Abish!) and I had SO MUCH I wanted to tell you, that I kind of become a motor mouth in this episode. If you need it to slow down, adjust the speed on your podcast player. Sorry! As I mentioned, we get to talk about Ammon and Abish this week! Two of my FAVORITE BofM characters EVER!!! We talk about the different ways that Ammon and Abish found to serve the Lord, how He was able to use them as instruments in His hand, and lessons we can apply to our own lives. Also, Ammon looks like Mattew McConaughey
Waterworks ahead! Sorry guys, I pretty much cry my way through this episode. The burning of the women and children in Ammonihah just destroyed me this week! We talk about that, what we can learn about Alma's partnership with Amulek, and how we can heal through Christ. The song featured in this episode is One Day by Cochran & Co. For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
"God's work will not fail." With that simple statement, our Come Follow Me manual lays out the elemental truth of this week's lesson. Alma will encounter several who try to destroy his efforts, but we see how the Lord helps him and even gives him the tools he needs to succeed. The song featured in this episode is "You Already Know" by J.J. Heller. This week we really focus on our Savior and I LOVE IT! We talk about Alma's 50 questions, Alma's teaching styles, and one of my favorite aspects of the Atonement. Also, there's a really awesome interview with Stefanie Colvin from LDS Real People, Real Lives Podcast. She tells us about her conversion and her thoughts on Alma. What do Lady Gaga, Alexander Hamilton, and King Mosiah all have in common? They are all quoted on this episode of The Savior Said! This week we talk about the political philosophies of King Mosiah, how we can make our communities better by being kind, sneaky Nehor and his incorrect doctrine, and how cool I think it is that we have a lay ministry. In case you haven't heard by now, I skipped this week's episode because I was struggling amidst some negative feedback I'd received recently. And a big THANK YOU to all those who rallied around me. I love you! But I couldn't just skip this week's assignment because one verse from this week wouldn't let me go! So I had to do a mini-episode to get it out of my system. This week I was fixated on Mosiah 21:33 where it says, “And it came to pass that king Limhi and many of his people were desirous to be baptized; but there was none in the land that had authority from God. And Ammon declined doing this thing, considering himself an unworthy servant.” How was he unworthy??? That thought led me on so many rabbit trails. From how the Book of Mormon is translated (and how our culture impacts our reading) to what does unworthy really mean (maybe he just didn't have the Priesthood?) to how we sometimes let self doubt talk us into feeling "unworthy" when we really ARE worthy. And yes, that IS Thor's hammer on the episode cover. My fellow comic book nerds will get why Mjolnir is on the cover of an episode about worthiness
Was Abinadi old or young? Where did he come from? How can we be like him? How are we standing up for truth in different ways- like coaching volleyball? How did God support Abinadi during this trial- what was the immediate goodness for Abinadi? We discuss all this and more in this week's episode! This week we meet King Limhi who introduces us to King Zeniff and his historical account of Limhi's people. But what do Limhi's people have to do with us? And everything we're going through? Well, there's a lot we can learn by examining their situation. For more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
This week is King Benjamin's speech, Part 2! We talk about King B's 3 step process for salvation, how to have a mighty change of heart, and how the Harry Potter houses helped me learn about names. King Benjamin had a problem. How do I spread my words to all of my people? Even the ones far away, the ones that can't hear me? Luckily, the Lord inspired King Benjamin to find solutions to his problem. Just like the Lord has inspired prophets of all ages! We talk about the ways the Lord's prophets have overcome obstacles to spreading their message in the past, what servant leadership looks like, and how to serve in the middle of COVID 19 quarantine. Guys. I'm struggling so hard to find peace right now. With the news media screaming at me to panic, with toilet paper shortages every where I go, with scholarly articles and data championing social distancing...I just feel kind of distant from everything, including my Savior. I thought maybe some of you might be feeling the same way and might need a mixtape about finding peace in our Savior too! So here it is, my "PEACE: An Easter mixtape", my early Easter gift to you. I was so inspired by Enos this week! His prayer and the concept of "sacred groves" really got me thinking and it dovetails into the personal preparation I'm doing for the 2020 April General Conference. I'll share some of my thoughts, but you're also going to hear some amazing messages by Angie Killian the author of the song My Own Sacred Grove. I'll share her song as well- please pay attention to the gorgeous message that we can receive revelation and find our own relationship with our Heavenly Father no matter where we are. A special thank you to Angie for sharing her words and talent with the world. You can learn more about Angie and her songs at https://www.angiekillian.com/ or find her on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Put on your gardening gloves and get ready to play in the dirt! Just kidding, we're talking about allegorical dirt! Goodbye Nephi (sad face), hello Jacob (happy face)! We jump right into the book of Jacob and learn about magnifying our callings (the official ones and unofficial ones), how immorality is impacting our kids, and how to *not* council the Lord....still working on that one! or more fun, visit: http://www.facebook.com/thesaviorsaid https://www.instagram.com/thesaviorsaid/ http://thesaviorsaid.blogspot.com/
This was an incredibly hard episode to record and an even harder one to put out there. Please be kind. This week we discuss how Nephi teaches us to follow Christ, the 4th Article of Faith + enduring to the end, and also mental illness. How does the adversary tempt YOU? What does the Book of Mormon mean to YOU? How has the Holy Ghost testified of Jesus Christ to YOU? This week the Gospel gets personal as we talk about how a Marvelous Work and A Wonder has taken place in each of our lives, in just the way we need it to. The song featured in this episode is "I Know" by Big Daddy Weave. Have you ever been swimming in the ocean and you get that feeling of being tossed around in the waves? Like you come up for air and then another wave pulls you under? That's how I felt reading this week's assignment! For me, there were little pockets of understanding amidst large amounts of undecipherable paragraphs. The little pockets were so beautiful though, including one of my fav chapters of the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 25. Okay, so I didn't *love* all of the chapters this week. I explain why, and point out some stuff I do love in the reading. We've reached 2 Nephi! This week we talk about the law of opposition, Adam and Eve in the Garden, Nephi's a poet, and the curse of the Lamanites. The Come Follow Me print manual is different from the online version of the manual for the section 2 Nephi 5:20-21 "What was the curse that came upon the Lamanites". I recommend that you read the online version as the most up to date commentary on this section. I recommend Spotify or Podbean for the best The Savior Said listening experience.
