I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.   American Conservative University Podcast (ACU) is not an official representative for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Elder Uchtdorf speaks about joy! We all feel sadness and happiness, anger and love. He reminds us that through the gospel, we can feel lasting joy and gives three ways to find joy in this life - draw near unto God, look for it, and serve others. He ends with an invitation to do those things. “Life is not an endless sequence of emotional highs. “For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things.” And if God Himself weeps, as the scriptures affirm He does, then of course you and I will weep as well. Feeling sad is not a sign of failure. In this life, at least, joy and sorrow are inseparable companions. Like all of you, I have felt my share of disappointment, sorrow, sadness, and remorse.” “The gospel of Jesus Christ is truly the “good news of great joy”! It is a message of matchless hope! A message of yoke-bearing and burden-lifting. Of light-gathering. Of heavenly favor, higher understanding, holier covenants, eternal security, and everlasting glory!” An invitation: “During the coming days, weeks, and months, may I invite you to: Spend time in a sincere, full-hearted effort to draw near to God. Seek diligently for everyday moments of hope, peace, and joy. Bring joy to others around you.” If you'd like to be part of the conversation: Email: genconfconvos@gmail.com Facebook: General Conference Conversations Instagram: @generalconferenceconversations You can also watch this podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoiavmFctfCBB68kWaKVy0g

Just before he left home for college, eighteen year old Henry Eyring, the future world renowned LDS scientist, was invited by his father, Edward Eyring, to sit down for some fatherly counsel. After sharing his firm conviction that Joseph Smith was a true prophet whom God used to restore his church, Edward said to his son, “Now, there are a lot of other matters which are much less clear to me. But in this Church you don't have to believe anything that isn't true.” In this Church you don't have to believe anything that isn't true. Hmm. This echoes President Dieter F. Uchtdorf's teaching when he declared, “Latter-day Saints are not asked to blindly accept everything they hear. We are encouraged to think and discover truth for ourselves. We are expected to ponder, to search, to evaluate, and thereby to come to a personal knowledge of the truth.”  So, how do we do this when it comes to theological or doctrinal truth? How can we confidently determine what is and what is not reliable doctrine so we can decide what to believe?  In this episode of Church History Matters we dive into this very question and explore three vital questions to ask when evaluating all doctrinal truth claims. In the next two episodes Valerie will share with you her findings following hundreds of intense hours working with members of the LDS church in faith and trust crisis this past year since she opened up her first growth, processing, and support groups as a trauma therapist serving her own faith community.   These observations might be of particular interest as they come exactly 10 years following the creation of an exhaustive report (linked in full below) created for (then President) Dieter F. Uchtdorf as a way to help LDS general authorities better understand the nature of the suffering of so many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in faith and trust crises.   Valerie's analysis in this episode and Friday's episodes covers the following (among other things): The current main causes of LDS faith and trust crisis  The emergence of some issues in 2023 that were less prominent in 2013 What people in faith and trust crisis generally are experiencing from a psychological perspective The relational suffering of those in LDS faith and trust crisis due to the standard rhetoric about “those who doubt”  The psychological interventions that Valerie uses to help people heal from the trauma of faith and trust crisis  How people look and feel as they heal from this experience both in relationship to themselves, others, and the LDS church  Valerie feels a deep personal commitment to help each person who comes to this platform.  Thank you for trusting this platform as you work through this challenging but ultimately rewarding experience of spiritual growth!   Faith Crisis Report: https://faenrandir.github.io/a_careful_examination/documents/faith_crisis_study/Faith_Crisis_R28e.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0HEjV8dDVB9J1__x6ISIgHBRFw5TL06l-mr38edrjdAqbVZbp7Ox2ZvuU&fs=e&s=cl&fs=e&s=cl ————————————————————————————————————————————- All Friday episodes of Latter Day Struggles can be accessed through a paid subscription ($9.99/month) by following this link directly below.  Thank you for supporting Valerie's professional commitment to your LDS Faith expansion journey. "Our hearts were drawn to the call of a prophet this April 2023 conference weekend. He reminded us that the easiest way to identify a follower of Christ is how compassionately that person treats other people. He told us that charity is the principal characteristic of a true follower of Christ, how charity defines a peacemaker. He promised us that if we would follow his counsel, we would arise as a spiritually strong woman of Christ. And then he told us the best is yet to come for those who spend their lives building up others. The prophet invited us to examine our discipleship, to make adjustments so that our behavior would be representative of a true follower of Jesus Christ. To live and interact with others in a higher, holier way. “I invite you to remember Jesus Christ. Pray to have the courage and wisdom to say or do what He would.” For the next six months, we plan to accept this invitation. In April and May, we will learn to UNDERSTAND HIS LOVE as we study the life and attributes of the PEACE GIVER. In June and July, we will study how to FEEL HIS LOVE as we find ways to experience PERSONAL PEACE. In August and September, we will discover how to SHARE HIS LOVE as we learn how to become PEACEMAKERS.Love gives second chances. Love asks, How can I help? Love is the welcoming in. Love doesn't stand higher, but meets people where they are. Love is never too good for someone. Love is full of grace. Love does not call attention to self. Love has an understanding heart. Love assumes the best. Love will not stand for injustice, helps carry the burden, creates trust, has high hopes and expectations. Love doesn't leave when things get tough.Love never fails. We look forward to spending the next six months with you!"

In the weeks since General Conference, I have spent much time in prayer and self-reflection, especially concerning President Nelson's counsel to avoid contention. In light of my work in sharing my faith online, I have been asking, “Is it I? Am I contributing to the contention President Nelson warned us to avoid?” My pondering has led me to the scriptures to study the life of the Savior, with particular attention to how He responded to criticism, mockery, and attempted provocation. What I discovered changed how I view contention, particularly as it relates to teaching and standing for truth. It might change how you view it as well. Listen in for all the details. Happy Thanksgiving to each and everyone of you! Thank you for listening to this podcast. I thought it would be wonderful to hear from young adults about their views on gratitude and living in a spirit of gratitude. Join me today as I have a conversation with nine of my nieces and nephews about their lives, and how they show gratitude to others. Also, how they feel gratitude in their hearts.  "But some might say, “What do I have to be grateful for when my world is falling apart?” Perhaps focusing on what we are grateful for is the wrong approach. It is difficult to develop a spirit of gratitude if our thankfulness is only proportional to the number of blessings we can count. True, it is important to frequently “count our blessings”—and anyone who has tried this knows there are many—but I don't believe the Lord expects us to be less thankful in times of trial than in times of abundance and ease. In fact, most of the scriptural references do not speak of gratitude for things but rather suggest an overall spirit or attitude of gratitude. It is easy to be grateful for things when life seems to be going our way. But what then of those times when what we wish for seems to be far out of reach? Could I suggest that we see gratitude as a disposition, a way of life that stands independent of our current situation? In other words, I'm suggesting that instead of being thankful for things, we focus on being thankful in our circumstances—whatever they may be." The theme of distraction keeps popping up for me, and specifically how distraction can keep us from doing the most important things. So today we're talking about some of the ways to combat this, how to identify it in your life, and where you'll find the best solution that's exactly meant for you.   Time Stamps: [00:24] - Corrine explains why “distraction” is this episode's theme. It started with reading a book. [03:23] - Satan wants you to waste your time. [05:54] - Corrine keeps feeling nudges about writing a book. How does she plan to pursue it? [08:20] - Neil says this lesson did not leave his mind when thinking of how people spend time. [11:20] - “Favorable conditions never come.” [13:29] - There's a difference between “people who surf” and surfers. [15:41] - God will bring the miracles you need. [18:20] - Sometimes there does need to be a sacrifice or a trade off. The situation depends on how you prioritize your efforts. [19:50] - Neil thinks about how faith and personal agency relates to opportunities. [21:58] - When the distractions are drowning out the true purpose, it's time to simplify your plan. [24:28] - Corrine reminds everyone to not get distracted by an obsession with accomplishment. You still need to live a full life. [27:23] - Why is it so easy to waste time? [29:27] - How can your identity be a distraction? [32:16] - Corrine explores legacy and how people live out their purpose on Earth. [34:49] - You don't need to use your time perfectly, but small adjustments can help you use it more effectively. [37:14] - Corrine and Neil refocus on the core reason Satan wants you. [39:27] - If you're not sure what to do with your time, ask Heavenly Father.   Supporting Resources: “The Infinite Atonement” Book by Tad R. Explore these important themes, topics, and questions: The themes of exiles & returns found throughout the scripturesWhat it means to weep for joyHow do we distract ourselves by the stories we are telling ourselves? The process of returning to God and the challenges that go along with that—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Invitation: Don't get distracted. Keep going. Know that your Heavenly Father is there to help you keep going!—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Quotes & Links: Link to Come, Follow Me Through the Old Testament Book:https://www.seagullbook.com/real-talk-real-life-scripture-journal-old-testament.htmlElder Dale Renlund said, “When we get off the path, God is saddened because He knows that this eventually, but invariably, leads to diminished happiness and forfeited blessings. In the scriptures, getting off the path is referred to as sin, and the resultant decrease in happiness and forfeited blessings is called punishment. In this sense, God is not punishing us; punishment is a consequence of our own choices, not His.” (“Choose You This Day,” General Conference, October 2018)Elder Watkins Quote: Elder Watkins prayed, “for the surrounding community that they will see and know that this temple is a blessing to them.” Elder Watkins asked for a blessing, stating that “ancestors of those who are not . . . members . . . in this area will have an increased influence upon their families here on earth.”  “As the temple foundation is poured, and the walls are placed, and the roof is formed, let us all revitalize our foundational faith in apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ being our chief cornerstone,” prayed Elder Watkins. Elder Uchtdorf Quote: “As the work continued, Nehemiah's enemies became more desperate. Four times they entreated him to leave the safety of the city and meet with them under the pretense of resolving the conflict, but Nehemiah knew that their intent was to do him harm. Each time they approached him, he responded with the same answer: “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down.” What a remarkable response! With that clear and unchanging purpose of heart and mind, with that great resolve, the walls of Jerusalem rose until they were rebuilt in an astonishing 52 days. (see v. 15) Nehemiah refused to allow distractions to prevent him from doing what the Lord wanted him to do.” [2009–A:59, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, We Are Doing a Great Work and Cannot Come Down]—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Real Talk is presented by Seagull Book and hosted by Ganel-Lyn Condie and John Fossum.

What was the symbolism of that? What is “The Jericho Principle?"—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Invitation: Rejoice in the knowledge that you have already been saved.—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Quotes & Links: Link to Come, Follow Me Through the Old Testament Book:https://www.seagullbook.com/come-follow-me-through-the-old-testament.html Gospel Library Quote about Joshua: “This book is named after Joshua because he was the principal figure in it and not because he was the author.Old Testament prophet and leader, and the successor of Moses. He was born in Egypt before the children of Israel escaped (Num. 14:26–31). He and Caleb were among the twelve spies sent to Canaan. They alone gave a good report of the land (Num. 13:8, 16–33; 14:1–10). He died at the age of 110 (Josh. 24:29). Joshua was a great example of a devout prophet-warrior.” (Gospel Library, Guide to the Scriptures, “Joshua”)President Uchtdorf Quote: “We are, therefore, not ignorant of the challenges of the world, nor are we unaware of the difficulties of our times. But this does not mean that we should burden ourselves or others with constant fear. Rather than dwelling on the immensity of our challenges, would it not be better to focus on the infinite greatness, goodness, and absolute power of our God, trusting Him and preparing with a joyful heart for the return of Jesus the Christ? As His covenant people, we need not be paralyzed by fear because bad things might happen. Instead, we can move forward with faith, courage, determination, and trust in God as we approach the challenges and opportunities ahead” [2017–A:104, Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Perfect Love Casteth Out Fear]Sister Michelle Craig Quote: “Jesus Christ sees people deeply. He sees individuals, their needs, and who they can become. Where others saw fishermen, sinners, or publicans, Jesus saw disciples; where others saw a man possessed by devils, Jesus looked past the outward distress, acknowledged the man, and healed him.” (2020–O:15, Michelle D. Craig, Eyes to See)Elder Marlin K. Jensen Quote:  “Remembering enables us to see God's hand in our past, just as prophecy and faith assure us of God's hand in our future” (“Remember and Perish Not,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2007, 38).
